@Tinkeringbell Did you create some script to continuously unprotect the featured post?
Ah, bad. The API doesn't offer protection/unprotection.

@ɪBᴜɢ Shadow the Wizard did with a bare JS function
yesterday, by Shadow Wizard
window.setInterval(function() {

}, 1000*60*5);

It's interesting to observed there were at least 3 very new users stumbled upon the Tavern :)
and left silently because they haven't had enough rep to talk on the chat room...

lol
they should try and get 20 rep. Chat is fun

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ week end

@JNat thanks! You saw the other pings?

@ShadowWizard Oh, lemme rephrase: "Stop having fun IRL Charcoal"

Not everyone are having fun IRL ;)

9:08 AM
I'm having s/un/inals/ IRL :)

Suninals? Sounds refreshing. I just prefer tea though

I prefer $(cat /dev/urandom) better :)

I'd be careful talking about kitties in this room
The cat content has been mostly replaced by dog content

So $(cat /dev/dog) or something similar?

> it's Friday afternoon in the US, and my guess is most folks asking PHP questions right now are feeling a bit desperate and exhausted.
It is not the time of day that matters ...

@ɪBᴜɢ Not a script. See the reply from andmyself ;) Just running a bit of code in the console.

I have this sentence here SE staff ... is not hired ... , nor are they hired and I have the feeling "they" is not correct (as I assume staff is singular) or "is" is not correct but I can't figure out how to better word that sentence. Does it need fixing and if yes, how?

@rene SE staffs are not hired
I'm fine with SE staff are since "staff" can be a collective noun.

Okay

@ɪBᴜɢ urinals?! :D

@rene better now

Q: Does "staff" take a plural verb?

MysterionWhich one of these two statements is correct? Our staff do ... Our staff does ... And is staffs ever correct?

@rene TL;DR; it's a classic case of "there is/are milk and cheese on the table". Regardless of the regional uses, if you're treating staff as different people, i.e. different items, then use an "are". If it's a group of people, it should be an "is".

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ isn't that just what I said? (collective noun)

Well that's a label applied to thingies with a groupish meaning, so . . . no? I dunno
I don't think all collective nouns can be treated like that
I'm far away from my linguistic peak. Right now I can only talk about fungi reproduction.

10:12 AM
anyway, it is helpful. Thanks to all for chiming in.

@rene Yes but did you know that certain zygospores can survive being in space for 40000 years?
Let's see plants do that.
Back to the book

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it doesn't matter. They still wouldn't have reached another solor system by that time. They are still doomed just as we all are ...

A: Area 51 - Where's Stack Overflow?

GlorfindelSince I can't find a duplicate: Area 51 was created after the trilogy (Stack Overflow, Super User and Server Fault) split. Also, this site, Meta Stack Exchange existed back then as Meta Stack Overflow. The first site to launch from Area 51 was Web Applications (it's at the bottom of this page wi...

@Glorfindel that is not a bad time. And the area is pleasant as well (no need to pass it quick)

Yeah, it's really nice there. Almost as nice as the woods where I live (Ermelo) :)

Nice. That's less time than we just spent on grocery shopping :P

so Dutchy...

@andmyself Try 'Mom needed an extra bike to carry stuff as we didn't have a car, and then spent 75% of the two hours we were away outside the store chatting with people'.

Question: Is this answer spam?

Not after AJ's edit
Poster's only other contribution is an unclear tumbleweed on SO

My question is about the first revision, that's why I linked to it.

My answer is, "not sure, but it doesn't matter now anyways"
You could ask in Charcoal, hoping for more eyeballs

Well, if a mod decided to salvage it, then...

I'm asking because I wonder if I should flag a pst like this as spam, when I see it
I'm not asking about what happened later, although spam should not be edited.

4:57 PM
A mod flag is always safe
@AnneDaunted I'd amend that - spam shouldn't be edited unless you can turn it into a valid post without changing the poster's intent

Unless the answer is not plagiarized, then you have 2 problems...

If a post is plagiarized but not otherwise spam, it's mod flag territory

@JohnDvorak It's even safer to not flag at all

5:13 PM
Worst that can happen is a declined flag ...

Rob
5:59 PM
^ Worst is a valid flag that is lost to a subsequent edit, with the reward for your efforts being declined (or not helpful), then seeing if you can protest that it was valid when the help was offered. More than double the work, waiting leaves an uncertain amount of time to wait.

6:16 PM
True. Btw., the post in question has been deleted.

@rene Oh but my halpful flagz ratio :(

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ better than my accept ratio!

6:44 PM
Accept ra... I feel old now.
Actually, the worst that can happen is that you get suspended for casting invalid flags. Caused an uproar a couple of weeks ago.

@ShadowWizard FYI I've set up a similar script which runs from a browser in my server, so it does not depend on me keeping a browser window open in my laptop. It's a user script that will be ready for the next contest as well.

7:00 PM
wondering if reducing the timeout to 5 seconds is acceptable...

@Glorfindel Does that mean I can close my browser? :P

@Tinkeringbell you'll still need it for your other duties :)

@Glorfindel Hahaha ;) I have to windows open, I'm going to close the one that has the console running then ;)

Hello, MSE chat, I'm a new user and just answered the "stuff-a-away" question. It's now protected. Can someone please un-protect it?

@Kevin Hi Kevin! It's already unprotected again. @Glorfindel that script you wrote is working like a charm ;)

@Tinkeringbell Thank you!

@Tinkeringbell thanks. Let's run it for day or so and then edit the notice at the bottom of the Meta post.

Sounds good to me :)

Prior to writing on Meta to request a 'tag split' I thought I'd ask here. On Stack Exchange main we have https://stackexchange.com/questions?tab=realtime which streams all the questions in real-time. But when I search on Meta for the tag [realtime] it gets changed to [real-time] which is then
synonymized to the tag live-refresh which is for something entirely different.

@Rob Apparently there's
though the tag excerpt and wiki might need to be updated to include more features from there (HNQ, Real-time, Today's Featured Site, Filtered Questions, All Sites, etc.)

Rob
@andmyself - That is closer but it's for 'my-sites' filter - mine is: https://stackexchange.com/filters/329781/my-sites - so that's not the correct tag, but thanks for the suggestion.

there's also ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Rob
The 'filter features' are too numerous and the feed too specific to overlap them IMO - but that's why we are discussing this.
Those two tags you mentioned might be synonymous, though I don't know that's a good idea. My request to split "realtime" ought not to re-synonimize it with either of those. IMO.
Ah ha - It has been mis-synonimized - it ought to be synonymous with https://meta.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/realtime-questions.

10:01 PM
I mean, the is not only about filtered questions, thus the excerpt should be updated... but good to know you found the tag you want

Rob
Do you agree that is 100% exact?
I can suggest tag wiki edits but have no button to alter synonyms.

Not sure about synonymizing...
But the wiki could be updated...

Rob
@Tinkeringbell - Do you agree with my request to alter the synonymization of the tag "realtime" with the tag "live-refresh" and instead make "realtime" a synonym of the tag "realtime-questions" ? -- See also brief discussion above.
brb

10:20 PM
I'm... not entirely sure. realtime can be used pretty reasonably for both, I guess. So I'm hoping someone put some thought into this before and there's some historical reason (questions tagged realtime were mostly about live-refresh?) they're synonymized this way... I think this is perhaps definitely one that goes in a question on main

Rob
OK, if I'm the only one whom thinks so I'll simply use the "realtime-questions" tag when searching instead of "realtime" - Thanks. I won't write a request on Meta.
The synonymization could be a result of the 'Mad Retagger' (not mentioning any names). :)

@Rob If it helps... I don't think so ;) And I don't really know if 'you're the only one whom thinks so'... I just think differently, that's why it's probably useful to ask more people ;)

Rob
Maybe some more people will come to chat in the hours to come and shed some light, maybe it could be revisited. I have my answer. Thank you both.
To me it seems like a mis-synonimization.
