@Rob eh. It's worth remembering until recently the folks who did that were staff.
Realtime-questions feels like an odd tag
So does realtime
They both feel metataggy

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ @Mithrandir y'all are amateurs in snatching comment flags compared to me...

Rob
1:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Maybe it's 'overtagging' (metataggy?) but my point is that the synonymization is incorrect and leads to the wrong tag. If everyone is happy the way it is it's less work to not make a request that isn't going to be popular. I'm happy with Tinkerbell's answer that one would have to sort through the history, I won't be doing that on my cellphone. I'm satisfied with the response and have a tag I can use, good enough. Thanks for your input.

2:48 AM
I was just appointed owner of some room.
What does that mean? The FAQ isn't very helpful.

A: A guide to moderating chat

TarynWhat tools are available to room owners? Room owners are users that have some elevated permissions in a chatroom. Typically, they will be the first line of defense when it comes to inappropriate content or behavior in a room. Users will look to the room owners to guide the room. The room owners...

Ah thanks.
So I have become a god.
And just randomly too.

Rob
3:49 AM
@forest Here's your room: Forest and Ciro, any others you create will be listed there too.

@Rob Nah not that one, I was just appointed owner of a site room.
in The Side Channel on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 4 hours ago, by Feeds
forest has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)

Rob
Hmmm, don't know why it doesn't show up there; and I didn't spot anything in that guide listed above explaining that.

Maybe because it's on chat.stackexchange.com and not chat.meta.stackexchange.com

Rob
I suspect it means this:
"Automatic appointment of room owners

If a reasonably active room has no owner, or none of the owners have been in the room for a certain time, a new owner may be automatically appointed, to ensure that there's somebody who can administrate.

But there are moderators there already. O_o
I mean I'm not complaining, but still.

Rob
3:56 AM
If the Moderators have been participating it's odd that they weren't chosen first, but like you say: "lucky you".

Mods aren't owners.
Well... they can be, but they don't need to be.

ah

Rob
As for your 'calculator discussion' I can see how if the light was on (and all was well for the calculator) and then the light was turned off (draining it's power) and just before it was to fail the light was flicked back on - the calculator might go astray. Computers can do that when there's a brief interruption.

Yeah. If you could control the input power with enough precision, you could do some very interesting glitching (up to arbitrary code execution).
But that assumes you can cut power at very precise timing, e.g. in the middle of an individual clock cycle (which aren't very fast in calculators, but still).

Rob
The calculator would boot wrong if it's booting was interrupted.

4:06 AM
I think most low-power photovoltaic calculators don't even boot.
(I mean, the processor naturally needs to synchronize individual subsystems and bring them into a stable and defined state, but that takes on the order of nanoseconds).

Rob
Not "boot" like a computer, but they have a brain that needs to start - to process keys, store whole numbers when an operator is pressed (+,-,÷,*), and generate the segments to represent each number on the display.

Oh you mean at runtime.
I remember a long time ago I had an old calculator, and when the battery ran down, it would occasionally return downright incorrect answers...

Rob
It's a one trick pony. Far simpler than a Cellphone's brain, like the 'LTE brain' (microcode).

Yep, though I wouldn't be surprised if modern calculators just used common mass-produced ICs like an 8051 or something.

Rob
It's a bunch of logic blocks on a tiny chip that does the calculator function. Previously (decades ago) calculators were huge, only did a few things (no √ or π) and cost over $200. Now they are reasonably fully featured and sometimes available at the dollar store (for $2).

that's to say I was the most active user at that time, and the ROs were too idle ;p

Did... data.SE not update yet?

@Mithrandir why should it? It's on Monday
(as far as I remember)

I thought it was Sundays.

oh yup
> The data is updated early every Sunday morning around 3:00 UTC. The last update was 3 hours ago
Let's see with a query...

I'm getting old data.

Oh wow Experts Exchange is still a thing.
I just saw a search result for it.

8:26 AM
@Mithrandir true. Query to test it. /cc @balpha can you please kick SEDE to update its data please? It says it was updated 3 hours ago, but it didn't. Thanks!
@forest why not?
They have good content, just behind a pay wall.

I thought it went out of business ages ago.

Probably enough people pay them.

huh
They're like a Quora paywall you can't get around just by adding a ? to the URL.

Medium's paywall... can be easily bypassed by simply opening it in an incognito tab.

I didn't even know Medium had a paywall (probably since I use Tor).

8:30 AM
well, it depends

@forest think only after you read several articles
Anyway...

ah

You meant this? ^ @forest

there are different types of stories, and there's one type that you need to pay for after reading 5 free ones

Nah not that long ago, I must have just misremembered.
Or maybe they were just so bad that I assumed they were gone.

8:33 AM
@forest big programming forum that went down was DevShed
I was very active on aspfree which was part of it, when it went down I joined SO.
ohhh looks like they still keep it up after all those years, but it's 100% dead. Visit at your own risk, its SSL expired long ago.
lol I'm still listed as mod, with all others who didn't even visit for years...

> Error code: MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_ADDITIONAL_POLICY_CONSTRAINT_FAILED
And yeah it did expire in 2018 October.

yeah it's not secure

Not too long ago.
But it does show that they aren't keeping the site maintained.

It also might redirect you to other site, so careful.

Which site?

8:38 AM
dunno, something for sale.

I just see a lot of threads with the last post being 2014 or 2012.
Oh some threads are sorta recent.

Maybe they tried to sell the domain and failed, so brought it back... not sure.

Well, 2017 recent.

@forest only "thanks" posts.

> There are currently 117 users browsing this forum. (0 members & 117 guests)
That's actually kind of sad.

8:40 AM
It is
Like I said, it's dead beyond any doubt or repair.
I was surprised it's still up to be honest. lol

Come... abandon this ghost town and join Stack... we don't have cookies, but who cares...

And it all happened when the site owner sold it to some big internet company.

Sometimes it's worse seeing a site that's dead and abandoned, but still have the servers chugging on... I mean, seeing an old site on a web archive is like going to a graveyard, but this? This is like watching something that wants to die but can't.

The big company put ads all over the place and stopped maintaining the site or listening to what the members said.
Within few months they were left with no active users.

ouch

8:42 AM
@forest zombie, yeah

@forest and a good chunk of them are tavernites? ;p

Their newest member was May 2018. A warm welcome to them. :(

The big company made some last try to save it, appointed some "super mods" with admin power, but it was too late.

@ShadowWizard I have no idea how to do that, but I can leave a note internally

Was it dying before it was sold to that company?

8:44 AM
@balpha oh. Only @Nick can? He's not pingable here, so I went with the "second best" I know. :P

@forest @Journeyman there is a sub forum which reminds me of the Tavern: forums.aspfree.com/asp-free-lounge-32

@ShadowWizard I could probably find out how to do it, but frankly that's not how I want to spend my Sunday morning 😁

Have fun browsing that.... :D
@balpha lol sure... thanks for stopping by! :)

the cert is SHUNNED

Oh... and single WAG thread with 34,130 replies: forums.aspfree.com/asp-free-lounge-32/… Now that is history!! :P
@JourneymanGeek ouch. So the server was hacked?

@ShadowWizard naw
basically everyone decided to stop trusting symantec certs

@ShadowWizard Hello former you from 2005. :P

Oh you did Folding@home. cool.
I still do that with my little cluster when it's not fuzzing. :P

@balpha I see SEDE is now updated. Thanks!

@forest lol well I was active until 2012 or so.
@JourneymanGeek oh. why??

Symantec, DigiNotar, WoSign, StartCom... RIP crappy CAs.

@forest yeah, with three computers 24/7

Still? Nice.

@forest no, the project itself closed down long ago

@JourneymanGeek oh. Thanks!

No it didn't, it still exists and is very active (folding@home that is).

My last post was at June 18th, 2014, 03:11 AM
@balpha wait, so it means the update simply took 3+ hours?
@forest really?? hmm... might take a look though now can have it run only on one computer.

Yeah I don't think it ever closed down. I still use it to keep warm in the winter. :P
Because why waste all that valuable energy with a space heater?
It's all gonna turn into heat one way or another.

8:57 AM
@TimPost how many swag boxes you have? The contest is nearing 200 answers. Also, if you have less boxes than answers, what will decide the winners? Score, or submission date?

Ugh the review queues icon is so glitchy.
It keeps lighting up red telling me there's something there.
I click it? Nothing.
Refresh the page and it vanishes. 10 minutes later, bright red. Rinse and repeat.

@forest heh. Why not mining bitcoins like everyone are doing?

I can make more money by fuzzing software than mining bitcoins. :P

@forest it's just not live.

Plus I don't have a GPU cluster, just CPU (a few crappy GPUs).
Whenever I need GPU stuff (like for password cracking), I just get a friend to help.

9:01 AM
@forest and presumably more useful

Much more useful.
I can't really fuzz on GPUs so that's why I have no GPU cluster.
Though I do know someone who fuzzes with Intel Phi...
But they also make their own highly-focused fuzzer.
The lack of an MMU on GPUs really makes it hard to even emulate fuzzing. :(

heh. MMUs aside, sounds like you'd love to get your paws on a renderfarm lol

@forest got paws?! :P

How many GPUs does a renderfarm even have?
Most I've ever used was a small rack of 2U servers (16 GPUs each).
Which was pretty damn fast.

9:22 AM
none
for some reason they still favour lots of x86 cores when I was working at one

@rene - Did you notice my discussion earlier with @Tinkeringbell and @JourneymanGeek, along with @andmyself about the "realtime" tag being synonymized with "live-refresh" instead of "realtime-questions" ? - chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7474499#7474499 - currently resolved as leave it.

@ShadowWizard lol why is the first thing people think of "pedophile network"?
People need to set their threat models straight.

@forest most scary, especially for people with children.

Still less likely than their kid being hit by a car or shot by a burglar.
Also I think the reddit OP has some kind of paranoid psychosis lol
Judging by the kinds of reactions he perceived.
I mean I live around people who would freak out if an ESSID appeared called "FBI van", and the worst thing they do is collect guns cuz muh small gubment.

lol
If I was a secret government agency I'd set my ESSID to something like iROAD (which is apparently used by construction monitoring equipment) or something like that
NOT ISD VAN

I'd set it to FBI van just because no one would actually suspect it.
I mean if I saw an ESSID like that I'd laugh it off.
But if I saw a hidden ESSID or some anomalies on an SDR, I'd be creeped out. Or if some other ESSID was set to match my own... (I don't use WiFi though).
> I almost called CPS until I saw it was potentially corrupted
lol yeah def schizophrenia

9:56 AM
:(

Rob
He should have changed it to PedoNetwork and all would have been well, by his thinking. Or buy the cheapest WiFi possible and bury it in the wall/ceiling hardwired to the hallway lighting, change the SSID to "Creepy Neighbors" and move out. 😄

I once saw an ESSID called "click here for child porn".
It was an open ESSID. I wonder if anyone actually connected to it.
And another called something like "connect to get a virus".

@forest I'm sure many did :D
(just for science, of course! lol)

lol probably
I tried but it was too far out of range.

More likely honeypot by n00b police officer though.

@forest Abandon all hope.

@forest not randomly. The single RO of that room wasn't active for long time, and you were the most active user in the room hence the system picked you. Same happened to @JourneymanGeek at some point. :)

Oh huh

10:11 AM
I suspect mods aren't eligible to become RO automatically, otherwise Ella Rose would have become RO instead: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/784/…

That makes sense.
Though it's odd since mods are active.

But their duty isn't to be room owners in chat.

The most obvious thing to do, then, is to de-RO forest and to appoint the mods as ROs...
;)

@ShadowWizard You know in infosec, I see paranoid schizophrenia all the time.
It's just plain ubiquitous.

10:14 AM
I'm in an email with someone who is sure that the government has infected his USB drive and it automatically is spreading to his computer when he plugged it in, and then his router and phone etc. And obviously the backdoor is communicating using strange protocols and survives even re-formatting and the like.
He's absolutely convinced that he's being targeted despite the fact that there is virtually no govt malware which is so advanced that it can spread like this (we're talking about dozens of 0days here), yet so obvious that a novice notices it.

@forest Part of your job? Or someone you met online unrelated to work?

Nah this is some guy who contacted me over SE.
I basically told him that he'd have to find evidence (I told him how, pcap logs and firmware dumping with an SPI programmer or JTAG) for anyone to look at it.
No one is going to do detailed analysis of his hardware on a hunch.
Now, if he does give me pcap logs and firmware images that show indications of compromise, I'll certainly put him in contact with the right people.
But I don't think that's gonna happen.
I even saw someone who was absolutely sure his phone was hacked by his friend who therefore must know exactly what he is searching online at that very second, because his friend sent him a text message with something like "you still use adobe? XD". Apparently he made a connection that the "X" in the emoticon "XD" stood for "XXX", implying that his friend knew he was looking at porn at that moment.
Some incredible delusions.

@ShadowWizard In theory mods shouldn't be ROs

10:47 AM
In practice here I didn't bother. On SU apparently it's unthinkable

11:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek yup
@forest rofl!! Now that's a good one. XD

11:52 AM
@Rob I didn't. Am I screwing something up?

@rene you always do! :D

Thanks for the support and confirmation!
I think that will be my 2019 theme: screw up more

\o/

12:11 PM
@rene maybe similar comment you post of OT questions can fit there too?
Clearly they thought MSE is programming site, or SuperUser-ish site...

@ShadowWizard I was too lazy to test if what they state for Chrome can even work / exists.
@ShadowWizard hmm, not sure. Technically it attempts to answer a question so we can't NAA flag it.

If we only would have moderators that could help us here ...
@ShadowWizard does that fix the issue?

@rene I never had issue, ask @forest :)
(or the OP of that question :))

Okay @forest please see ^

Rob
12:20 PM
@rene I don't know that the blame falls on you, just wondering if you wanted to chime in ... It could be fixed or left as is. There seems some disagreement as to whether or not anything is wrong, or what is wrong. Easiest to leave it, but didn't want to leave you (or anyone else whom has whatever opinion) out of the discussion. I thought of you because I know you like perusing the tags.

@Rob with only 15 questions for , think it's indeed not worth any effort.
If there were, say, 50+, then it was worth some deeper discussion via new MSE question, etc. IMO. :)

I certainly agree that the synonyms would not have been my 1st choice. would have been nice for that specific feature. What remains is wiki clean-up at best.

hmm... I have a feeling I created that tag, so I'm to blame. lol
!!/blame

@ShadowWizard It's and myself's fault.

Rob
If you want to search for Q&A's that only involve the realtime feed it's nice to not have them cluttered by everything else, thus the tag; synonymizing it with another unrelated tag presents a high amount of noise to sift through. This is a case of "less is more (useful)".
We could run the Wheel of Blame to see whom done it:
Ah ha, try again.

12:29 PM
@Rob it is not that many questions that are about it: meta.stackexchange.com/search?q=realtime+tab+is%3Aq

Rob
Agreed, that's the beauty of it. If that's all you want then nothing else comes up.

@SmokeDetector ...

Rob
The live-refresh is something entirely different - mashing them all together would only return hits that are unwanted by one or another searcher - someone whom wanted both (no such thing) could easily use both tags in their search.

The problem I see is that is ambigious. So it is more that before the stuff was synomized it would have been more appropriate to clean-up questions first. Maybe the synomizer assumed that questions with and would be used to distinguish topics about the real-time tab. Having it merged makes it certainly harder if you want to answer questions about the realtime tab only.

MEE
Maybe for the question feed?
and for the other usecase

12:38 PM
@MEE that could also apply to the tags feeds on proper SE sites, no? The term feed is one I would personally try to avoid

Rob
Yes, and that's the problem. The "realtime tab" gets synonymized to real-time which then goes to live-refresh, which is:
Vote Count Updates
New Answer Notifications
Post Edit Notifications
New Comment Notifications
New Activity Notifications (seen in most question lists)
Nothing to do with the feed of live questions.

MEE
@rene what about ?

... okay, that's wordy

@MEE smells too much of the user activity?

Rob
If anything "realtime-tab" seems an obvious choice.

12:40 PM
I can live with that
And then just tag those questions that are about that

MEE
@Rob yeah that is ok

and leave the current synonym chain as is

Rob
It disambiguates from anyother realtime categories. Not sure what other thing someone would think it meant. The current realtime-questions is equally obvious but certainly much longer.
Leaving the 'realtime chain' in it's current state saves people having to figure out what changed or why.
We should wait for Geek, Tink, and the other one (to save searching to see whom it is).

Chris

Thanks.

The other question, mentioned by Tinkerbell, (and someone else?, on Meta a few days ago), is should we write a Meta to give this question proper exposure instead of doing "behind the scenes skullduggery in the chat room".

Yes, well. We're trusted to add a tag. When it comes to screwing the front-page we need to be careful / mindful of those that don't care about the zillion of old posts being bumped.
Where zillion should be read as 6 to 8 ...

Rob

So ..., if a new tag was created and described as " This tag is for Q&A's about the realtime question feed located on the main Stack Exchange website, located here: https://stackexchange.com/questions?tab=realtime" and that tag is synonymized with the current then nothing would be stepped on, wrecked, squatted, etc. ???

@Rob maybe, but note that tag wiki excerpt can't have links/markdown.

Rob
1:18 PM
OK, no working link; but we could have the link be just text (and not be clickable).
There's a Meta Q, add links/markdown to Tag Wiki.
Having the link in textual form makes it clear exactly what is meant.

1. verb
- to put off repeatedly
- to keep postponing something supposed to be done

He's not really petty. He's a star of a multi-million dollar franchise.
The Fast and the Furious (colloquial: Fast & Furious) is an American media franchise based on a series of action films that is largely concerned with illegal street racing, heists and espionage, and includes material in various other media that depicts characters and situations from the films. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the series was established with the 2001 film titled The Fast and the Furious; this was followed by seven sequels, two short films that tie into the series, and as of May 2017, it has become Universal's biggest franchise of all time, currently the eighth-highest-grossing...
