Turn off upnp, and any other services you don't need and you're good

I never turn off my router outside of restarting it
Or PC for that matter, but thats because I misuse my pc as server

12:58 AM
Yup

1:21 AM
@Derpy I don't think it's really a problem.
If the router is insecure, then even 10 minutes is bad.
Doesn't matter how long it's connected.
The major issue with leaving it on 24/7 is that it uses power.
Not much power, but still power. Can be an issue for off-grid folk.

1:39 AM
@forest if you're off grid though, the equation is completely different
and you actually want a traditional landline over VOIP

Unless you use satellite internet or something.
Power-wise, even a router running 24/7 can be a problem.
Unless you use micro-hydro or have a really big solar array.

IIRC satillite internet still needed a dialup uplink?

Depends on the kind. Some do, some don't. It's usually more expensive if you need it to support uplink, but portable satellite internet modems are not uncommon.

and considering the speeds and... relative slowness, you could probably skip the router cause its too damned slow

Speed (bandwidth) is actually not bad either. Latency is nasty though.

I think this one is spam (seed or mild attempt), no?
didn't spot it at first sight until I read the last sentence

but yes

> I have no idea!
I read that as "I have no ideal"
When your question is so bad that a non-programmer notices it's crap, I guess you have a dangerous case of ideal deficiency
Hey guys do you call November "autumn" or "winter"? (speaking of the northern semisphere) — iBug yesterday
I usually call November November, but that's just me
Nice, Ed is mod again

@Mithrandir I'm kinda planning a question disaster....

@Derpy ?

Thinking to post a question asking if the rumors about Terra being a big part of the real reasons the original Teen Titans animated show cancellation have some actual proof.
knowing Stack, that could end very well... or more probably very badly.

Eh, I think it should be fine

... yep, unless an actual fan of the series come by.
the "unresolved Terra plot" is one of the aspect of that show that usually ends up in lots and lots of salt.

9:17 AM
A fan of the original Teen Titans?

9:43 AM
@forest you know, the last animated show they made, the one that was cancelled after season 5

I dunno that one. I only ever watched the original.

A: Suggestions for Winter Bash 2019

animusonIn the spirit of my comment on the question, let me throw out a few random ideas that might get the thought cauldron churning a bit and maybe we can push some renewed excitement into this end-of-the-year fun: Let users team up The leaderboards are, frankly, lame. Leaderboards for contest-style ...

Give your vote for the HAT GATCHA MACHINE
It could be our last hope to finally end the cycle of reused boring hat triggers and move to something more intriguing:

That just makes me want to be a contrarian and downvote it.

@forest quick reminder: you get damaged too.

Yeah that's why I didn't lol

Unless you want "Get Necromancer badge" for the fifth or sixth time next year :P

Q: Can Beast Boy turn into other humans?

Wad CheberThis question could apply to any superhero who can turn into animals, although the only ones who come to mind are Beast Boy and the chick from the Wonder Twins. To avoid making the question too broad, I will focus on Beast Boy. He can turn into animals. People are animals. So can he turn into...

I wonder if I should mention that there is actually an official reference to this question in the show.
Considering that Bizzaro's Boy Beast is a "dog with the ability to turn into any boy in the world"...

The 2018 Winter Bash festivities have come to an end. It was a fun season, especially with the addition of the sweater mini-game. As is our custom, we’ll recap a bit here on some of the stats for the hats as well as post some of the many outrageously attractive avatars we found across the network.

This year we saw a 5-way tie for most hats earned during Winter Bash! However, the question still remains… did they earn all of the possible hats? Congratulations to these winners!

This year also featured a few secret hats which were awarded multiple times.  Many of you were able to find th …

11:40 AM
@Feeds doens't even mention what were the actual undiscovered triggers for some of the secret hats.
The tinfoil-hat theory that the hats were indeed bugged and awarded incorrectly at times intensifies :P
@andmyself while the animated canvas are good in their own way and probably require a lot of work, I still prefer some static-but-cute picture.

Rob
Animated cute image is sometimes better, like Taylor Swift.

So... any meta post asking to preserve the Knit Bash script, just like StackEgg?

12:03 PM
So, quick pool to see if I am too much paranoid or just someone who actually cares...
Suppose you are given access to a SharePoint farm hosted on Azure, to be used for some development.
Then you discover that the domain controller VM is badly infected (and obviously no one has any idea on how or when the infection came...).
You find...
- multiple cryptocurrency miners
- some backdoor trojans, including some that required multiple disinfections to completely remove (would return after restart)
- compromised registry, including policies to restrict user access and some autorun script that would download and execute some random powershell script from a remote rogue server.
- rogue dns entries.
Would you:
a) trash the farm and create a new farm to use for future development.
b) trust that after 5 different antivirus, some rootkit removal tool, hijackthis custom scan and fix and so on... now the machine is probably clean and can be safely used so that you don't have to pay the time/resource cost to create a new one

If impact for devs is manageable I would opt for a.
I mean: if 100 devs rely on that dev instance and they are put behind schedule several days due to the nuke, then b might be cheaper business-wise
That is a call only management can make, assuming they are capable ...

Just a one "infection" huh. You'd wonder when the zombie virus comes along

@rene assume you would be the only one needing that machine.

@Derpy go for option a then
and make sure that your rebuild is never vulnerable to the same havoc

12:25 PM
@rene oh, don't worry, I wasn't trying to get a suggestion: IMHO b) shouldn't be even considered (really? risking developing a solution for a customer on a maybe-compromised machine?). I just wanted to confirm that I am not mad for having tried to dissuade people for going on with B)

@Derpy I've made some pretty crappy decisions from an engineering POV in projects where there was the best choice and a sub-par one where I still opted to go for sub-par in the short-term to buy time to have a manageable route to reach the best option. No fun.

This is the first time I see a so-what random price fluctuation on per-chapter of a manga... chapter 1 is 135¥, 2 is 90¥, 3 is 90¥, 4 is 135¥ ...
weird...

12:40 PM
4 is manga: Endgame. Not out yet so there's the unreleased bonus
1 is for people who want to forget the fact that half the anime characters turned into dust and it was all fun and games so there's the nostalgia bonus

You're such an motivator ...

That's what you get for free service pollinator
Or pollen-ator, if we're referring to the plant?
Bloody language

1:20 PM
@rene yonked your comment as an answer for that draggable text box question

Shame on you as I was looking for a proper duplicate ...

I'm fine with it being closed. I'm not in it for the rep XD

Looking through these old questions about resizing will give balpha a headache ... again.

I'm fine with that too XD

searching for resize returns lots of WinterBash questions ...

the balpha is sneakier than thou ;)

well, it turned out I couldn't find a duplicate. Now let me write an answer .... oh wait ...

kewl! ...

@rene it's not actually working there; it's just rendering it as a code inline element

Oh ... disappointment ...

Well, hey, at least someone is thinking about it...

That is true.

3:59 PM
@rene actually, that looks terribly wrong
the ``` is supposed to go on its own line

4:23 PM
@EKons oh, yeah. Well, they are working on it, which is a good thing. #TestingInProduction

actually, the part before the newline after the opening ``` should be a Google Prettify option

I'd like someone to unprotect a question, I posted on the Meta site's 2018 stuff away and it's my first post so it's protected.

@Necromancer it isn't protected at the moment or I must be looking at the wrong thing
oh, a mod already got it
They have a script running to catch these early @Necromancer see: meta.stackexchange.com/posts/321399/timeline

:) Every five minutes.
Works like a charm

Now that you are here, do you have a minute for a quick test?

Only if I can do it from mobile

@Tinkeringbell can you join me in the sandbox room: here

8:35 PM
Sure!

Sure!

Sure!

9:03 PM
Cool, thanks @rene. They should probably include that info on the content panel that explains the protection feature.

@Necromancer Ehhh. It's off when I'm asleep ;)

heh unsupervised userscript chaos

9:20 PM
@EKons I've supervised that script for two days. It should be capable of not setting my PC on fire for a few hours ;)

9:51 PM
It will mine a few bitcoins while it wait for the next time it needs to unprotect that question ...

10:10 PM
I almost have enough saved up to buy an apartment and move out

hopefully not to Greece...

10:26 PM
If I wanted to go to Greece or Turkey I could've moved out years ago :P

Hahaha. If it comes to that, this one really likes her cage XD

@Tinkeringbell getting mad :p

Pfft. That's nothing!

parrots are so expressive
the potential for funnery is endless

It's part of why I like being a parrot online ;)
