I don't really have an issue with small, useless tags being nuked after a chat discussion. Anything with more than 20 questions with the tag being properly used probably needs a post, though...
(sorry, stepped away) my issue with that is there's no discussion of it. No chance for someone to disagree, if anyone can just freely go out there and burninate a new tag that hasn't been used often because they feel it is unnecessary. That's a lot of power in 1 person without any checks, doing something that isn't easily undone. Unnecessary tags isn't a problem that warrants swift action, it's usually not a real problem, just a minor annoyance.

There's no reason we can't just go through the same process as any other burnination with them.
Personally i'm more annoyed by the front page being filled with interesting posts that end up being years old than i am with an irrelevant tag on said old post
@KevinB 1) The unnecessary part maybe got too much of an emphasis. The tags were vague or meta or SOME form of bad, other than not having been used for months, and 2) Well yeah, I guess the pace could use some adjusting. Front page floods are never fun
As an example, block-user was recently cleared out, but because there's no discussion on it, who knows what it was replaced with so we can look back at those questions to see whether or not it was warranted

Not really, no. We need some way for people to be able to see what's going on without expending too much effort, otherwise we're opening ourselves up to a lot of abuse.
There's no longer a "block-users" tag to point users who are looking to block other users to. This is a case where two burninations occurred that affected not only the question most likely to come up in a search for blocking users, but also the dupe target when "ignore" was burninated. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/268882/let-us-block-users I don't think that's helpful. @rene I understand that now, too. E. g., it would have been best to write two new MSE questions - one about forum and one about forums (do we need them?). Then move on from there, like one about merging them, another two about burninating each one of them, and so on.
I'm very much not willing to spend a lot of time on this
so I figured the two alternatives were: 1. pick reasonable-looking tags and restore reasonable-looking questions in them, or 2. make the folks who removed them do #1
