No :P
I should have known about the second 's' actually, I used to have a Sony Ericcson
Ericsson*
On an unrelated note, do you happen to have dyslexia or dysgraphia?
But for some reason I thought this Jon had only one 's'
@user1271772 for insisting to use a wrong name like Shog09 when you know it's wrong, I'd say. But I do find it funny. :)
@AndrasDeak I might, but never professionally diagnosed
00:01
Well, anyone might.
@user1271772 never too late.... :)
It's like playing the violin: you never know until you try.
Riding bikes?
Never tried violin. Played piano and trumpet for years
@user1271772 with a band? Like @jadarnel27?
00:02
I love riding bikes. Once did Barcelona to Valencia in 4 days
@ShadowWizard bands, orchestras, jazz combos, military marches,
@user1271772 nice! How long ago?
Marching band vs piano is the best combo
I was in over 250 ensembles between 1999 and 2005, but slowed down my trumpet playing heavily since then
@user1271772 oh, so you were in the Canadian army?
Air Force
00:03
Would love to see/hear you playing a trumpet, @user. :D
the trumteppe
@user1271772 pilot?
@ShadowWizard I did pilot training, flew planes too, but it's not my job right now
I'm not a pilot, or in any military, anymore
@user1271772 I see. So what you do these days?

I hope you use intent specifications and implicit none
@user1271772 freelancing then? How many children?
@user1271772 My main interests are CS and education, though I also have aviation and filmmaking as interests. I maintain a log of flights I take, which I hand to pilots to complete.
@AndrasDeak nah that's @Peter
@ShadowWizard 1 son with first girl, 2 daughters with second girl.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Keeping a log of flights is extremely important, for example to maintain your license you need to log a minimum number of hours per year
00:22
@user1271772 Nice so it totals to same amount I have. ;)
@user1271772 I'm aware of that.
But this is a different type of log.
@ShadowWizard You have 3, but only 2 in the picture? 3rd one is baby?
@user1271772 correct. In February she will be 2 y/o. She was with her mother outside the bus.
I see, Catija's said her son is 2
Yup. Ben.
00:25
February which day? My brother was born on 17 February
same day as michael jordan and (I believe) paris hilton
@user1271772 nice! Ella was born one day after him. ;)
18 February!
@user1271772 wow you know lots of trivia!
@user1271772 yup
I played as Jordan in MS-DOS game when I was a kid.
He was awesome. Along with Larry Bird, Magic Jonson etc.
@Shadow Out of curiosity, how common is the kibbutz system in Israel?
Windows 3.1 ?
00:28
@ShadowWizard Heh, I've been playing Doom in an emulator for a little while
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog it failed. But still exists. So I'd say not common anymore.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog heh I played it naturally (without emulator) for years.
@user1271772 never had. Skipped right to Windows 98. (from DOS)
@ShadowWizard Which sound card did you have?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Sound Blaster, I think.
@ShadowWizard What really ?? wowww
@ShadowWizard Did you ever play Space Quest III?
00:30
@user1271772 yup
oh well
good night
98 was a great system though.. Still was in use at one of the places I worked, until 2012
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Space Quest yes, few, not 100% sure III was one of them. Why?
@AndrasDeak night! 🌙
Heh, I went to the local Sears stores that are closing, and they still use old IBM machines at their checkout stands.
@user1271772 yup. Same as XP. (in its greatness and persistence to survive long after discontinued)
00:32
@ShadowWizard You should replay one of those games in an emulator, with Roland MT-32 sound. You'll be astounded at what it can do!

^^^ That is me. I saw some uncertainty in here, so clarifying.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog whoa, nice!
Thanks, Monica. And +1 of course
Because we had this RF card-reader to let people in and out of the building, but the software to control whose cards are allowed in and out, was for Windows 98, so we had a Windows 98 machine until 2012 when we got a new card-reading system. Yes XP i still sometimes see at airports
Have you seen Tim's new lukewarm blog post?
00:33
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog might give it a try! :)
@AndrasDeak thanks. I also tweeted it, 'cause that's how you get things seen. :-)
a.k.a. ~ "mistakes are occasionally made"
@user1271772 @Shadow The store directory machines at my local Sears still used Windows 98
@MonicaCellio hehe
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Which OS for those IBM machines?
00:34
@user1271772 It had a text-based UI, so MS-DOS
@AndrasDeak I have. It's good to see the revised theory of moderation. Most of the things I asked for in my original Medium post (and later on MSE) remain unaddressed, so I assume that's done at this point.
@user1271772 At Austin Airport half of the old "directory" screens have been converted into game machines which run popular mobile games
@MonicaCellio know it is you. Cheers!
2:35 here. Time for bed. Cya!
Dreamwidth is where my real blog is. I used Medium on the first post because (a) SE folks hang out there and (b) image one-boxing.
@MonicaCellio: I have not read it yet, but I opened it in a different tab
00:36
@ShadowWizard good time zone.
sorry, I think I misunderstood
@MonicaCellio "that's done" as in "not going to happen", right?
@AndrasDeak right. I think SE is done responding to this situation and that they aren't going to address the other things.

Mods will have a new way to escalate things that need to be dealt with promptly, so if a mod sees something like those tweets in the future we have an escalation path. The absence of such a path didn't affect the twitterpocalypse, though; that was employees jumping in before site mods even knew something was happening.
@MonicaCellio where it helps - I do think the Twitter thing is a raging dumpster fire they are taking too long to put out
Also I need to check what's out escalation path if an employee is a problem on meta... Which may help here
@JourneymanGeek yeah, there have been times when I as a mod have wanted that and been stuck.
Well - least from the brief for the MSE mod role (job? :p) it seems essential
00:47
Yes. You need that.
@MonicaCellio gotcha
Annoyingly I am away from a PC :p
That makes you an NPC
So not much use till the weekend
@Catija Out of curiosity, what is the company-internal policy regarding discussing the aforementioned incident? Is it even allowed?
00:54
@MonicaCellio I also need to talk to tink and Chris about logistics and best practices, accessibility... Flaile
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog waaaait what incident?
The one referred to in the messages above.
That's my cue. Night.
The Twitter dumpster fire?
@JourneymanGeek Yep
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Top secret. I'm not allowed to talk about whether talking about it is allowed... I'm not even allowed to know that it's top secret or tell people about it. This chat message will self-destruct in 6-8.
01:22
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog might be worth applying some common sense here
We got into this mess because someone did what they felt was the right thing to do without checking
To an extent a unified public voice is essential
It's not really about the incident anyway. It's about rebuilding trust and communication for the next time
@Catija kinda reminds me of an army joke...
I was the second to suggest that SE wasn't listening or responding before the incident. (@Shadow was the first).
morning...
I could tell you but... I don't know what's happening either
looks like I have many thing to catch up since the lag attack last night...
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog there's a lot of internal discussion tho
01:27
and MORE BLUE NAMES
@andmyself There's an important item waiting in the SEEN
@andmyself hiiiiiii
@JourneymanGeek It was pointed out in Monica's Medium post that a lot of internal discussion means nothing for the public.
that said... afk, preparing for going to the work, don't wanna late just because I chose to catch up first >_<
Rob
Rob
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Perhaps you mean in the tavern? Otherwise that's surely not the case. People have had complaints (whether unfounded or not), for years.
01:29
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog true but it's also an essential first level of communication
@Rob Not necessarily.
Rob
Rob
Well, I'm not sure how long you've been around on the network, but people have had complaints since the inception of the site
I'm not quite sure why it matters who was first or second or 265th. Credit isn't what matters. Change happening that is good for the network is what matters. Be happy for everyone, don't worry about attributing the credit... or blame (for those who think we shouldn't be letting two dogs and a parrot moderate MSE).
3
I think that @SonictheAnonymousHedgehog was one of the early ones
Also, clear signal to anyone interested in moderating MSE... we only consider users who are animals. Humans and gravatars need not apply. ;)
user194636
01:38
I think you mean Scenic The Eponymous Hodgepodge
@PaulWhite What does that mean?
user194636
It means misspelling user names for comedic effect is a thing
@Catija lol. Keeping quiet about it was hard
01:56
@Catija Am I an animal?
@Catija or blame :p
now that I'm at the office... started catching up
02:14
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Anthropomorphized animal... bit of a grey area.
@PaulWhite I don't understand how you mis-spelled the name though, what I did was just click "reply" and it automatically spelled his name the way that it is entered into their SQL database
isn't irony sweet
Actually when I click reply it says "7385381", which doesn't become the username until AFTER i click send, so how am I supposed to change it to "Scenic" ?
I mean, what number did you have to change 7385381 to in order to go from Sonic to Scenic, and how do I figure out that number?
@Catija I'd say 265th is pretty important.
user194636
@ArtOfCode lol
02:22
@Alex 256th is even more important :)
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer, messaging number in answer, pattern-matching email in answer (271): How to use AirPods as a hearing aid? by john peter on apple.SE
@ArtOfCode Ah, yes. Lots of important stuff:
256 (two hundred [and] fifty-six) is the natural number following 255 and preceding 257. == In mathematics == 256 is a composite number, with the factorization 256 = 28, which makes it a power of two. 256 is 4 raised to the 4th power, so in tetration notation 256 is 24. 256 is a perfect square (162). 256 is the only 3-digit number that is zenzizenzizenzic. It is 2 to the 8th power or ( ( 2 2 ) 2 ) ...
@Alex Gotta love mathematical definitions. "2 comes after 1 and before 3"
Indeed.
@PaulWhite, what is the algorithm for converting 7385381 from Sonic to Scenic? Are there even enough digits to change Sonic to whatever we want?
I can understand that 7385381 is enough digits to store all usernames on the network because there's fewer than ten million of us, but in order to mis-assign each of the 10 million users into completely different usernames chosen randomly from the dictionary, would require more digits I think.
@ArtOfCode do you know the algorithm he's using?
02:29
sure, hang on
@ArtOfCode Thank you ArtOfCode
$\text{C} = 2^8 \sqrt{\frac{\lceil\text{MD5}(M)_2\rceil}{\lfloor\text{MD5}(T)_2\rfloor}}$
That's just latex
@ArtOfCode what you have given me is a Gaussian integration
oops no that's something else
@user1271772 that's a message id not a user ID
02:39
256 x square root of (ceiling of MD5(M)_binary / floor of MD5(T)_binary) ?
@ArtOfCode you've got to say what M and T are, and what the function MD5 is, then I can figure it out
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Blacklisted website in answer (92): Magento 2 : Social Login via Rest Api by Say Truth on magento.SE
Rob
Rob
@user1271772 M and T depend on whether or not the characters in the username are restricted to the ASCII character set or not.
Okay but what are they?
Rob
Rob
Half the fun is figuring out those numbers yourself
For example, in the case where the username only has ASCII characters... like yours and mine, then what do the M and T mean?
@Rob The problem is I don't believe it's true, there's not enough numbers
7385439 has 7 digits, that can go up to 9999999, allso known as 10 million.
10 million is enough to store all possible usernames on the network, but not enough to store all possible mis-spellings of the usernames. For example that guy changed Sonic to Scenic, and I am tempted to conclude that he did it manually.
Rob
Rob
02:46
If you think he did it manually, what made you think there was an algorithm involved in the first place?
And, I'm sure we can create new numbers to suit our needs, we'll never run out
Well you'll have to add digits, that's all
Rob
Rob
Well, it looks like you've almost cracked it. Just need to figure out M. Once you've got that, T is pretty trivial
but the mapping has to be stored in the SQL... you need to decode @ArtOfCode's algorithm to figure out how to map, for example, Sonic, to Scenic. If I just changed the number myself I might change Sonic to something else.
@Rob What about the function MD5 ?
which takes M and T as input parameters?
Rob
Rob
Google will explain that better than I. I'm not a mathematician
The only bit you're missing, I think, is that the number isn't a store of the full misspelling - it only stores a diff between the correct spelling and the misspelling, which is why you don't need as many numbers. IIRC, there's some invisible ASCII character used to indicate whether it's a user or a diff.
02:50
So it's a hash function devised by Rivest, the 'R' in RSA, how am I supposed to figure that out?
@ArtOfCode so the default is the correct spelling of course
:7385452 if I change the 3 to a 2 I get ....
what happened?
It doesn't work if you change it !!
You're probably missing the invisible ASCII control character
Can't recall which one it is off the top of my head
Is there a Meta question about it?
My last two Meta questions got downvoted heavily so I'm not going to try that again
@user1271772 it's always worth looking at why they were downvoted...
@JourneymanGeek I did, I came here and asked you about it... that's how I first met you. The second time, I talked about it here earlier today. Basically, they don't like questions that try to improve the site or complain about something that the user thinks can be improved. However I guess I could ask about the invisible ASCII character, although I haven't ever seen a question like that on Meta before
@JourneymanGeek Also, many of the downvotes came because I came here and complained about it. The more I complained about it that day, the more downvotes I got throughout the day, as more and more people saw it.
@JourneymanGeek, I was first reluctant to make changes because I thought that it would be no use to a -20 question, but reading it now (several months after learning more about Meta) I made 2 changes which I think make it look less like a complaint and more like a meta question. Can you take a look ? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/312302/…
It's actually funny that a few weeks later, that same guy Robert Garisto asked the same question about whether or not mods should be permanent, and he got 39 upvotes for it... it was marked as a duplicate of my question with -20
03:09
@user1271772 So... if you really want people to know that you're talking about the CM, Robert Cartaino, you should probably pick a misspelling that's a little closer to his actual name. I only know that's who you mean because you've done it before...
The spelling is that much different?
Oh it's an entirely new name
I remember Robert Garisto
The guy from twitter?
No. Robert doesn't use Twitter as far as I'm aware.
nor is he a theoretical physicist for that matter
Rob

@Rob I did not deliberately mis-spell his name. I remember Robert Garisto. I did not re-read the screenshot today.
Screenshot was taken months ago
Rob
Rob
Not really buying that.. considering you continue to misspell the names of the same people immediately after being corrected
From now on I will call him Robert Cartaino
user168476
@user1271772 the thing is you constantly misspell names which is frustrating and makes it hard to know who you mean. So you gotta realize that it is frustrating to people and makes it hard to communicate with you
After finishing the catch-up... I'm confused with the following convo until now ._.
user168476
03:14
Intentional or not, we keep trying to help and you just keep making excuses
@andmyself which one?
@Ash Other people did it too.
@user1271772 no one expects perfection. That said we do expect you to make an effort. I corrected you about this the other day
I can't spell his name either. I look it up each time
@JourneymanGeek can you take a look at my two recent edits here? chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7385467#7385467
@JourneymanGeek Or just "Area 51 Overlord"...
user168476
@user1271772 that feels very "if someone jumped off a bridge" to me
03:16
Does it make it look less like a complaint and more like a meta question?
I spelled it correctly when I typed it but rechecked before I actually hit send... and I work with him. :/
user168476
(like sure maybe they did, but your misspellings have been a problem multiple times lately and you seem very resistant to change and correction)
@Catija You have to be very careful for that
@user1271772 I guess no
user194636
Good to see the joke still running
03:18
@JourneymanGeek That's a response to my response to Catija?
The core issue is it gives no improvement over the current mod pro tem process
@user1271772 No. I just take getting people's names correct seriously.
@JourneymanGeek Maybe it doesn't, but how is a new Meta user supposed to know that?
We shouldn't suggest change for change's sake
Shog9 (without 0), Jeff Atwood (not Art, nor ArtOfCode), Glorfindel (aka. Gorfinkel), Robert Cartaino (Garisto doesn't seem to participate on SE)
03:19
I never got ArtOfCode wrong
You got Atwood wrong :p
Because Art is a word
At ... is a word too :/
Other people said Gorfinkel before,
@andmyself wow good point, I never thought of that
Rob
Rob
Making excuses as to why you made the mistakes doesn't really give me any confidence that you're going to try to spell them correctly in the future
03:20
I wasn't thinking about these things when spelling their names, I sometimes get it right too
So take a moment to think. It helps
@Rob There's many times when I did mis-spell them correctly
spell* them correctly not mis-spell
@JourneymanGeek okay but what about my question, -20 votes?
Robert C, asked the same thing a little while later and got 39 upvotes for it
@user1271772 it is meta. People disagree. It's not an improvement
only 2 people upvoted the duplication vote
Robert was asking for input on how we are doing things
Now your question would be more effective if it focused on a solution to a problem
03:23
Wording is important. Now, where's that Shog9's answer on how meta posts get upvoted (one of them is the "presentation")...
user194636
I had an upvote on meta once. It was a good day.
user194636
Probably a mis-click.
You guys are so mean, I'm already on the ground and you keep kicking? Why 3 more downvotes in the last 3 minutes? I edited the question to remove any part that sounded like a complaint and I came here to ask feedback on whether or not those were good improvements, because @JourneymanGeek asked me to think about why I was getting downvotes.
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported answer (94): Minecraft Windows 10 Edition world importing by user221526 on gaming.SE
So anyway, that's why I don't ask quesitons on meta anymore, you make a joke out of it and downvote for fun
03:29
"You guys"? I didn't even open your meta posts.
And it's amusing that you suspect us on this chat room who downvoted your posts
@user1271772 it also helps both ways to be aware of how people see you.
I gave you some feedback too
@andmyself The question is several months old. It has been stagnant for months. I have not got downvotes on it for months. We start talking about it here because Journeyman asked me to think about why I got downvoted, and suddenly there's 3 new downvotes. What is amusing about that?
@JourneymanGeek : I guess so, but what about the edits I made to the post today, do those not make the question look less like a complaint?
See, you're missing the point
You are trying to propose a solution ... What?
@JourneymanGeek What does this sentence mean?
@user1271772 The question got bumped after the edit, so it's on the main spotlight of active questions list. Everyone who's on MSE but not on this chat room could also read and downvote it...
suspecting/blaming us on the Tavern who downvoted is... not productive at all...
03:40
@user1271772 literally what are you trying to fix by cycling pro tem mods?
@andmyself : whether or not it's productive is debatable, and I don't want to waste time debating with you. However, I thought that after a certain number of downvotes it's not visible anymore? it's actually written in one of the comments to one of the answers. GLorfinder said "Ask a new question, no one's going to see this now. Ask a new question"
Glorfindel.
Takes long time, but typing it slowly you get all the letters right
Other just @ Glorfindel then remove the @
@JourneymanGeek Can we talk about it later? I've spend the whole day on this chat room except for that meeting I went to (which I was late to !)

But he's not been here since that day last week when he was showing us his code
03:41
@ArtOfCode or that
Alright, I'll leave it to cool down myself first
@andmyself you have to cool down?
Better than wasting time debating with me
@andmyself thanks
@andmyself well I'm sorry for blaming this core group of people, I really thought it could only be the people here because GLorfindel told me that once it's downvoted so heavily, it doesn't show up anymore, so I thought only the people here would see it. But now I know that so I'm less likely to blame the people here in the future. So it was productive, although I don't like the way it was taught to me.
user194636
@user1271772 It doesn't show up on the home page, but it does on the Questions tab, e.g. when sorted by Active. Easy to check. Anyway: one of the risks of editing or posting a link in a chat room is that people who haven't seen your post before will see it, assess it, and vote accordingly.
03:47
@user1271772 Blame never helps, nor does accusing people
@andmyself, well actually, I just checked .... my post does NOT show up for me. Neither does anything with a lot of negative. Last post was Monica's
I've always found it's productive to consider what I can do better and what the effect I have on others is.
Ok I got 17 new downvotes can someone upvote it please?

...I doubt that. I'd prefer to hear @user1271772's answer themselves.
@user1271772 I think there's a bit of a imperitive tone you might have missed. This is something we really would like you to do, as part of this community. It shows respect for others, which is a very good thing
how's everyone's day going?
Alright. Tho I have no idea what I'm actually doing

Just had a lunch, and lazy to do my work~
@heather hasn't started yet and already really weird
@Mithrandir ... i think you'll need to expand on that =)
I just woke up after having an extremely vivid apocalyptic dream that went into extreme detail about radiation and the splitting of atoms. I don't usually have dreams like that.
*shrugs* And no, I haven't really been doing any research on the subject or anything.
...anyway, now I need to get up. Back later.
huh. i once had a really weird, vivid dream where i explained graph theory to my dad. i don't know very much about graph theory at all, but in the five minutes i remembered it when i woke up, i was like, "huh, that made sense...wait, what was my explanation again?"
@Mithrandir see you =)
Erm ...
@heather sounds like my video game dreams
06:13
Ah, regarding dream, I had a dream this morning, reminding me to wake up and go to the office.
Sounds nightmarish
sounds so, I didn't even realize it was a dream, I thought I already woke up...
lucid dream is the best dream

i tend to have really vivid dreams, in full color and with most of my senses and everything, though i also tend to have some knowledge it's a dream, making them semi-controllable, which gets really interesting sometimes.

Q: Does RPG Stack Exchange want to opt out from Hot Network Questions?

doppelgreenerWhat's this? The Hot Network Questions (HNQ) list is that list of random questions from random sites you'll see in the bottom of the sidebar on most site pages. It displays questions that have attracted significant attention measured by an abstract “hotness” score based on how rapidly the questio...

@andmyself actually that's the community acting in it's own best interests
yep, and looks like it's possible to request for opt-out(?)
@andmyself Pick out a question with a badly-phrased title that meets the criteria for HNQ, take a screenshot about it, and tweet it. The request will be handled by SE in 6-8 minutes.

And actually seems prudent
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog bleh.
That's now how it should work. That's not how any of it should work
An essential part of rewriting the social contract is to make sure that dosen't happen without community input
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog while I sometime enjoy "Twutter Driven Development joke", I really hate every time that particular case is brought back.
@JourneymanGeek What do you think about having a closehammer now?
unrelated, but 'lost soul' is a 1-click task then ;)
It's sad that we'll no longer see that misspelling of [cv-pls] here anymore
