@Magisch that person turned out to be a troll?
If this is the blog post we've been waiting for for weeks then I'm quite disappointed. There's no admission of fault beyond a part-of-a-sentence and there's no actionable change announced going forward
@Bart which person?
ah well
@user1271772 yes
@AndrasDeak the original Twitter post poster of tweets
17:02
@Magisch This is the blog post that addresses SE's relationship with its moderators in general. It's also required reading for new hires, IIRC. It's not meant to be an incident post-mortem.
@ArtOfCode Do we just not get an incident post mortem then?
Or is that still in the works?
Uh oh, people in the tavern calling rights activists trolls :PPP
@Magisch shrug
@AndrasDeak Didn't, I just linked to a blog post
@Tinkeringbell: can you at least convert this to a comment then? I removed your picture and username so that people wouldn't know it was you, but that really should have been a comment. You know why you had to write so many exclamation marks? It's because answers have to be a certain number of characters minimum and adding more exclamation marks was the only way you could get around that obstacle. Circumventing the system isn't what we want to encourage is it?

Q: Why does Meta allow posts that are not questions?

user1271772I have searched to see if there was any post about this but the only thing I could find was this answer explaining what Meta is, and it still suggests that Meta is supposed to be used for asking questions, not advertising new features or announcing new community managers. For example, how is thi...

17:03
By one of the least controversial members of all of SE
@Magisch I mean Bart
or was their question regarding the post you linked?
@AndrasDeak I'm not, the post that was linked is
@user1271772 The rules on non-question-questions are different. That answer is fine.
> In mid-October somebody who turned out to be a troll complained on Twitter about two such questions
oooh OK, sorry, language problems
17:05
If what Monica's writing about TL discussions is true then this is even worse then I thought
Why would it not be true?
if SE wanted things to leak into the public they'd have posted something publicly themselves
No reason to assume it isn't, but she doesn't present proof either, which I understand is because it would violate the moderator agreement
lol, first paragraph of Tim's new post links to the welcome wagon blog post. This should be good
@ArtOfCode : a lot of people were disappointed with it. Also, dozens of other people had their answers deleted. Also, maybe it's fine, but is cheating to get around the character limit really an "exemplar" of good behavior that we want to use in role models? One day someone's going to get angry and say "why was a mod allowed to do it". What harm is there in converting it to a comment?
> This means teaching people to learn to embrace mistakes as an opportunity for growth and improvement.
17:08
@user1271772 "a lot of people were disappointed with it" [citation needed] "dozens of other people had their answers deleted" [citation needed]
What I mean in the last comment is that, maybe it's fine for regular users, but (in my opinion, and maybe only mine) mods shouldn't do that
There are 9 deleted answers there. 2 deleted as spam. 3 deleted by 20k delete votes. 4 owner-deleted. No mod-deletions.
@ArtOfCode no citations are needed here. But I can tell you privately the names of the people that were disappointed, and you can look yourself for the deleted answers (this was actually shown in an answer)
@TimPost you're perfectly right in that ^. Your lack of embracing the newest mistake stinks.
@user1271772 by "disappointed with it", do you mean Tinkeringbell's answer or Catija's appointment?
17:10
(am I doing it right?)
No, not Catijya's appointment! Just the answer!
@ArtOfCode: many of the answers that were deleted, were similar to, or better than Tinkerbell's
@user1271772 I have one of the deleted answers there. I deleted it myself
so people were disappointed with that answer but not the 17 other answers that say congratulations?
That's not a regular post. Answers to it aren't regular answers.
In the grand scheme of things, it's not going to affect anything.
@ArtOfCode No I'm not saying that people were disappointed in one answer and not the other answers. I don't know how you thought this would be the case, or that I was talking about the appointment.
user392547
Do we need to care so much about fake internet points on a site where you talk about places to get fake internet points?
user392547
17:14
(when I heard that phrase first, it sounded much cleaner)
@user1271772 "disappointed with it" kinda implies one thing
@ArtOfCode ArtOfCode, what do you want?
Nice house in the countryside somewhere?
Indoor heated swimming pool?
ArtOfCode, ArtOfCode, wherefore Art thou OfCode
Okay, my comment (with the link to the Meta question) was aggressive, and I can see that you're upset about that and want to defend the person that wrote the answer.
17:17
@ArtOfCode Nice, and helipad for my personal person drone.
I'll just fly to the shops :)
Oooh, helipad, hadn't thought of that
@ArtOfCode just the pad, not the copter?
I guess part of my aggression came from the fact that my question had so many downvotes even though I think it was a completely legit question, that a guy like me would not have known the answer to without just "knowing" that non-questions are okay.
Scratch that, why not go for a whole private airfield
Basement car garage... dreams
17:19
@scohe001 Oh, the whole works :)
in before batcave
The question started by showing that I looked for an answer, and gave two links to other places that I found which didn't contain the answer
@Henders Basement? Nah, ground floor level, floor to ceiling glass walls so I can show off the nice cars in it :)
@user1271772 I can't speak for others, but the reason I'm tempted to dv is because of the tone of the question. It sounds like you're condemning the whole practice as hearsay and suggesting that we should stop doing this. If the tone of the question had been more neutral, I feel like it would've been received a lot better
@ArtOfCode but, but, but in a basement, you get a cool car lift.
17:21
@user1271772 could... you possibly double check your spelling of names in the future?
@scohe001 Thank you. How can I make it more neutral?
@Henders hm... maybe it has to be first floor then
@Henders Sure, display some above ground but...
@Mithrandir which one, ArtOfCode or Tinkerbell?
17:22
Tinkeringbell, and right above that you added an extra "y" in Catija's name
also Andreas once
it's hard to get every name wrong, A for effort
@Mithrandir extra
@user1271772 Instead of "Why are we doing this?" with an implied "we need to stop this, it's dumb," the question could've been worded as "Are answers like this acceptable?" or "Should I flag answers like this?"
@scohe001 : I am very new here. A question with this much research effort, that hasn't been asked despite the forum being 8 years old, would have got a lot of upvotes on the main SE's that I go to
it's not a forum
17:23
@scohe001 Okay, I'm starting to learn that after spending more time here, but that question was asked almost 2 months ago
@user1271772 probably would've gotten upvotes here too. We just just prefer objectively asked questions on the SE sites
@user1271772 ahh I didn't notice the timestamp. You know for your next one then! :)
@scohe001 : I understand it a little better now that people here get very angry when users complain about something. But actually I think that this question objective and neutral in every sentence, depending on how you look at it. You need to assume bad faith to think what you're thinking. If you assume good faith, it's just a guy asking why things are a certain way.
one might also argue that a fairly new question with a bunch of upvotes suggests that yes, these posts are welcome
@scohe001 : What I have learned, is actually, "do not ask questions on Meta, because they will erroneously be close-voted with a 'hammer' immediately, and then later that will be reversed when people realize that it wasn't actually a 'dupe', and they will get tonnes of downvotes no matter what, unless people know your name from heavy participation in the past"
the word you're looking for is "elitist"
17:27
@scohe001 I also learned that people race each other to close vote, and they have apps that make that even quicker (and include a downvote even if you just wanted to use other features of the app, not the downvote part)
that is probably not true
It is a very unwelcoming place for a new user like me... as they say "meta is murder" ... I don't know why it's okay to be so unwelcoming ... but that's the way it is... and what I've learned is just not to ask things on meta
@AndrasDeak elitist for what?
@user1271772 nobody here is getting angry. Downvotes are not a way to show anger. They're a rating system. Complaints usually don't belong here since we prefer facts, so those get downvotes. There's a lot that's been said about what a downvote means (and written better than I could), but they're definitely not expressing anger toward you.
@AndrasDeak what is probably not true? I can give you examples of people racing each other to close vote, and examples of an app that allows you to make the process easier
@user1271772 I'd like an example to an app that casts a downvote for your close vote
17:30
@user1271772 as far as your facts, some of them are objectively wrong: "Why should someone get 1460 (292*5) points for "asking" it? ... We then have people getting 530 (53*10) points just for saying congratulations"
Also "racing each other" is a very bad-faith assumption. They merely want things to get closed. At least what I've seen.
@scohe001 That's what they always say, and I've read those things, and agree with parts of those written pieces. It still doesn't feel good to get 19 downvotes every time. (this combined with the instantaneous closure of the question without waiting for 5 votes, and everything else, can be quite furstrating).
Guys I have to go. 7 minutes late for a meeting
@AndrasDeak : There is one called "lost souls"
have fun
If you mean this it seems to be meant for blatantly off-topic questions, which do need a downvote and a close vote.
@scohe001 These are wrong if you take into consideration the 200 point/day limit, but I did not know about that limit when I asked the quesiton.
@AndrasDeak You're right we can talk more later.
17:32
@user1271772 that's what the edit button's for! :)
@scohe001 I'm not sure what the point is now, it's already got one more dv than it had 10 minutes ago!
@scohe001 it's not going to get more upvotes!
Guys I have to go, late for the 12:30pm meeting. Also missed lunch now. Got too addicted to this chat
@user1271772 because neither @rene nor myself are mods elsewhere on SE. They wanted users with mod experience already.
@ShadowWizard Oh I see .... but you have 100k points
rep is largely irrelevant
@ShadowWizard, okay I guess mod experience is pretty important because some people talked about a "learning curve" ... however I think you would be able to learn all those things very quickly (and probably already know most of the stuff anyway, since you already know all the meta questions and answers)
17:35
Yup
@user1271772 I don't have time to give a proper explanation now, but SE is all about curation of good content. You edit because you're trying to make a better question. And it'll get recognized by the community! When you edit, your post will go to the top of the active list so the edit will be seen. If your question is actually improved it will get views that can lead to upvotes!
@ShadowWizard: But anyway, I was just surprised that they didn't pick @ShadowWizard and @rene. However come to think of it... it seems like a VERY time-consuming job, so maybe not everyone wants that position anyway.
There's another guy with 130k rep who didn't get appointed either, I think his name is Shog09 or something like that. He came here to this chat room a couple times.
lol
I find it harder and harder to believe that you're legit
@scohe001 : I don't think that happens when you're at -19 right? Because then it becomes invisible?
@AndrasDeak Me?
42 mins ago, by ArtOfCode
Rep is not a good indicator of who makes a good mod
17:39
Guys I really have to go...
Will talk next time maybe
@user1271772 1.) Shog9. 2.) Shog is a Stack Exchange employee. 3.) 300k+ rep. 4.) Rep is not how mods are appointed.
Can't really say i could see any way people could be unhappy with the appointments
Sure there were probably 100+ qualified people but they needed 3 so any good choice is a good choice still
someone is always unhappy on meta

Hi everyone! I'm just quickly hopping in to say thanks for all the congratulations :) I have a knack for getting diamonds when I'm out with people, it seems :P I'll be back tomorrow!
@Tinkeringbell oooh nice blue name ;) congrats
that should balance all that red in your avatar
Further meta tags: 4) used 4 times, 5) used 5 times, 6) used 5 times.
@Derpy >:-) Good find! ;-)
And on that note I'm off to a meeting. Happy almost Turkey Day all, if that's your thing.
19:10
@AndrasDeak I also wondered, still do. But not many options. Hard to believe it's all an act? lol

Huh. 1 month.
So it sipped into main site? I assume a comment on the announcement. Meh.
probably none of our business
19:14
We're cooking up a booster pack (Stack Exchange theme) for Cards Against Humanity
You.. what?
No idea if we'll actually get it anywhere close to printing or making, but we're exploring the idea of having some kind of card game
Anyway.... so far off topic question evaded all three new mods. ;)
they're all out partying
nah, only one
19:16
@TimPost awesome, @Derpy will be thrilled. :)
For other card games, you have to pay a fee (franchise fee) in order to print a booster pack (e.g MTG or Pokemon) even if you don't charge for it, but Cards Against Humanity doesn't have that problem
@Mithrandir is Chris even active on MSE? I don't really remember seeing him close off topic questions. The third is probably asleep... or working. :)
Yes, ChrisF is most definitely active on Meta.SE
@TimPost hopefully it will make sense soon when the game is out. ;)
it's late at night and the dog isn't chatting so I assume he's not working nights tonight ;)
19:18
You can also raise money through Kick Starter for the game, no? @TimPost
@ShadowWizard I don't think we'd want to raise money for it, but if we got a booster pack out we might make a community project out of maintaining / growing it that some designers could work on (raising talent, not money, I suppose)
I'm sure the idea of having SO merch has been raised a lot of times. Is it never done because it's too much of a hassle? Logistics and tax-wise? Or some other reason?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog had a really good idea of cards when we asked for swag ideas for items that people would be likely to use and appreciate daily.
@AndrasDeak there was actual Shop once.
ah, I didn't know that
19:21
It was closed exactly for what you said.
OK, thanks
@AndrasDeak We tried it, and it was popular quickly, but we were just in a bad place to support it and our warehouse just didn't have the capabilities we needed to automate everything.
@TimPost if the Cards Against Humanity idea ends up being too much work, a regular 52 playing card deck that's SE themed would be really cool

Q: What happened to the Stack Exchange Store?

Michael PryorThere used to be a place where you could buy Stack Exchange branded gear, what happened to it?

thanks x 2
19:22
np np
@scohe001 I thought so too, so it's something we're looking into.
But anyway, we might re-start something like the store once we get swag self-serve, which we're going to do the first half of next year I think.
We'll be able to just give you a one-time use code where you can put in your size or name or color choice or whatever, and it just gets sent to you - we don't have to do any processing on our end.
Cool, cool. That's actually something that a lot of people would be looking forward to. Though I suspect it wouldn't even make a dent in terms of income
@TimPost Shipping with drones? ;)
Current system? Get ready for this, there are certain features in it that only work in IE7 (it's a third-party interface).
i.e. it doesn't work
19:24
I think the many memes post is a good place to start for inspiration.
the heck
@Catija 3d-printed plastic S-es! (Yeah, I just went there again)
Also, I've been begging for an SE store for years.
@Catija ironically you no longer need it ;)
I mean for the CAG booster but swag maybe, too.
19:26
CAG?
oh, cards against humanity
So the idea of a 'store' is likely to come back at some point, but it just might be a place in your profile that only you see when you're eligible to get something that an employee triggers, which is like DREAM COME TRUE for us.
@TimPost so...still "carrot on a stick" strategy. I.e. not a store :P
@Mithrandir ugh. I seem to miss something here, but all good... Chris is a good mod and I assume he'll be more active behind the scenes now, closing, deleting and handling flags. :)
@AndrasDeak I'm not actually sure how the swag thing works internally. They sent me a welcome pack when I was hired and a cute onesie for Gus. And some other fun stuff but I haven't tried to acquire things otherwise.
As for a place where you can just buy it? Well maybe for shirts or something because people like to give them as gifts, but the really cool stuff needs to be harder to get to maintain the rarity.
19:27
...like hats
Shirts are problematic for me because of sizes...
Hats aren't real. :D
Oh, unless you mean the mod hats, not winterbash. lol
I have a hat! It's just... fraying... badly. But it's definitely real.
@TimPost yeah, sure. But a buttload of that "10M programmers helped" would get a kick out of something menial like a shirt
@Mithrandir you can request a re-issue
19:28
Speaking of hats, I kinda want the mod hat in a different cut. Once someone mentioned how shallow it is, I find it doesn't stay on well.
oh thanks, i'll think about that
We used to have two kinds.
@Catija ɪᴛ'ꜱ ɴᴏᴛ ꜱʜᴀʟʟᴏᴡ.
there, it's fixed now ;)
@ShadowWizard my Winter Bash hat was real.
I'm all for SE issued beanies for moderators. Beanies fit almost everyone.
19:30
@Catija and yummy! :)
They had this cool beanie with a bluetooth control panel on it but I couldn't get past the need to charge my hat. Maybe I'm just old.
it must be great when your home is hacked by your hat
that must be what "black hat" refers to
As long as it's a beanie hat and not a Beanie Baby.
"hang on, I can telnet to her hat and totally p0wn her watch from there." -- things we'll eventually hear in movies.
@TimPost make your pillow a wireless charger and wear your hat to sleep. Problem solved? :p
19:33
@TimPost @Shog9 can any of you please reset SomethingBadHappened profile on main MSE? Something there is crashing the Chrome tab. Thanks!

...would there be any interest in making SE more usable for keyboard-only users...?
because I have some things that could use some improvement but I'm not sure if that's a standard accessibility thing
(Chat in particular is really annoying, but there are a few things that are tripping me up on the main sites as well.)
@Mithrandir You still haven't got a mouse yet? :/
I'm not a keyboard fanatic myself but there are a bunch of bug reports so I think there could be some traction
it's an internal problem, I like need to replace a driver or something
19:53
@Mithrandir Aaahh. You still haven't found the correct driver to update/download yet? :/ :P
I can right click and move the trackpad around, but I can't tap the trackpad or use the left clicker. Plugging in an external mouse doesn't help.
I'm not entirely sure how to look for it :P
windows?
Also, this has been an interesting experience
@Andras - Ubuntu, on a 10-year-old HP laptop that originally came with Windows Vista, with a hard drive swapped from an 8-year-old Dell laptop that originally came with Windows something
@Mithrandir personally I'm more inclined to vote for features that assist accesibility for users with disabilities, like this request for example: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315687/…
oh sure, but since this is something affecting me personally right now, I happen to be thinking about it
19:56
If you can write a request to address both your problem and the one I linked to ... bonus points ...
@Mithrandir I take it it's not as simple as fixing your synaptics.conf?
I had a "can't click on touchpad" issue which I could fix that way
*shrugs* this isn't my domain of expertise
this stuff isn't as simple as riding up a staircase on a bicycle
@Mithrandir hold on a second
19:58
that's my synaptics.conf complete with some garbage and comments ^
you can try backing up what you have now and replacing it with something similar, seeing if that helps
(I'd expect an external mouse to work though)
what if the bicycle was built specifically for riding up a staircase
I have GoPro footage that riding up a staircase is possible, depending of course on the staircase

Q: How do I reduce the risk of pinch flat punctures while riding up stairs on my hardtail?

MithrandirI've got a Specialized Pitch, size 27.5". I do a lot of urban MTBing and tricking. I know how to ride up stairs - up to four stairs at the moment, working on getting more - you lean back, get the front wheel up the first three or so, then lean forwards and pedal, keeping the weight off the back ...

XY problem!
*raises eyebrow*
the obvious solution is to not ride your bike up the stairs
20:02
right
just hop up them
easy
I've been working on that too
it's not that easy
and no, not riding up the stairs is not an option
arbitrary constraints, downvote
@KevinB This is one of those things that looks super easy, and then you try it, and you wonder how anybody manages it.
just bring a ramp with you
been considering that too actually
I've been trying to figure out how to build a mini kicker
20:04
@Mithrandir Sounds fun...
I'm just envisioning a bike transformer, with ramps on the side.
"DEPLOY RAMP!" shotguns ramp in front of bike, with bits of people everywhere
eventual goal: do a backflip
Welp, I got a good answer badge before the latest MSO dumpster fire got deleted.

No. Just trying to edit in chat and having it re-post instead of editing.

@AndrasDeak yeah. It's only a problem on mobile.
21:17
@rene As to this, I'm not sure. I can understand why it might have been declined. It does kinda look like some of the "help me fix my site" questions I've seen.
I'd also love an active transcipt, multiple message moves, edited message icons, list of all users, room info pages outside the room, links that open in new tabs, ... ... (sorry, I don't actually have a list, I had to think :D)
@Catija okay, fair enough. Thanks for checking.
Since the OP deleted it, I'm sorta worried they might undelete in future... particularly since doing so doesn't bump the post.
(Assuming they don't edit it)
@Catija reminds me of the old song: 99 bugs on the wall. take one down, patch it around, 392 bugs on the wall
@Catija IIRC they re-asked that same question.

21:23
@rene Ah, yes. But without the link.
true that
Why does that Evan question have so many downvotes? Because Evan?
well, probably yes.
What question?
MSE
21:36
Also because of the link to the ToS that seems only be related for that it has a similar legal construct
On my first reading I found it a suggestive question.
My comments didn't help to prevent downvotes, tbh
Just... why would anyone even ask that?
I guess they finally listened to me. I was among the first to make the claim that MSE needs mods, and I proposed that if they're insistent on only making current staff mods, they should incentivize other unrelated staff from different branches of the company to moderate during their spare time.
it seemed suggestive. i didn't like that it seemed suggestive. -> dv
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog but they didn't incentivize other unrelated staff from different branches of the company to moderate during their spare time, did they? They appointed community mods
@AndrasDeak turns out they weren't insistent, in that case
21:40
so now whom they listen to is twitter and Sonic

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Trust me, you weren't among the first. This suggestion has been going on since before I became a mod.

@ArtOfCode I was among the first to bring it up in the modern era.
oh right of course silly me

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Appointed mods are not for life.
@AndrasDeak done
> This isn't a pro-tem appointment, this is an office that they'll hold until they don't want it anymore or lose the capacity to continue.
Why does that post say that, then?
@Magisch much obliged
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog they will lose capacity to continue sooner or later
Your edit doesn't differentiate and most appointed mods aren't for life.
