@JourneymanGeek If I may ask, how's the partner search going?

Stalled.
@JourneymanGeek We're holding off on purchasing our next India tickets until we get word from my cousin, who is also at the same stage of the process
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard Mostly because I'm learning the language :) שלום

Why do I still have the empty space on the left? Is it only me?
@Rick no, it's by-design, regardless of left nav is enabled or not.
Wait, but I didn't have that yesterday morning
@Somewhat I am pretty sure that I didn't have that empty space till yesterday night.
I'm not entirely sure about that. While SE is now using responsive design (the left nav bar will be entirely hidden when the browser size is small enough), I still believe there's a max width for the post.
The vertical line is certainly a bug as Sonic has reported and mentioned it to you

Q: Can the vertical line please be removed (again)?

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogThe same issue as Why was a vertical line added on the left for users who collapse the left navigation? Can it please be removed? has arisen again. The bug was initially fixed, but it seems to have regressed. I'm posting again because SE generally prefers we file new bug reports if a...

but I believe the extra space will be still there
I could be wrong though
04:32
@Somewhat oh, it seems it's indeed the extra line makes me feel I suddenly have extra space.
Removing the vertical line now it looks as usual if I remember correctly
04:49
@Somewhat Can I please see a screenshot of meta.stackexchange.com/questions/314844/…, a deleted answer on my question?

If anyone cares Seasoned Advice is getting spammed by a group of people trying to market their food based website.
user384163
hello and GN
@bruglesco SpamRam and Charcoal should take care of it
@bruglesco link us here or in Charcoal HQ if you see any post that is not yet deleted.
06:07
@rene looks like they're linkless spam for something called "living foodz". A filter for the term "living foodz website" would probably naively handle a lot of it, especially since there's no web link
@JourneymanGeek Looks like Smokey's already looking for it

@JourneymanGeek well, spam is supposed to be dead instead of living. Most food is, except some squids that are served in Asia, IIRC.
living spam... might be a new SCP finding...
The night of the living spam?
Sometimes you process the meat. Tonight the meat processes you....
@Somewhat like the conscious video that would parasitize you when watched

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog you're not missing much
@Somewhat hehe the spammer will feel very unwelcome!

@RobertColumbia nice! So you קורא a lot? ;) Also why? Just for fun or planning moving to Israel?

Any idea that Stack Overflow should be a better place must be severely punished. We love our falling apart dystopia!
What kind of punishment are you proposing?
Eternal Summer of September Love?
@Somewhat I really need to start looking up what that even means.
I've seen it referenced a few times now
@Tinkeringbell it's a meta-meta meme
100 hours of community work (answering SO questions)
09:49
@JohnDvorak How would you time that :P Does that only go for posted answers, or also for attempts?
bad portmanteau of Summer of Love and Eternal September :/
@JohnDvorak Also, do I get a reduced sentence if I switch to IPS?
@Tinkeringbell 1000 hours of comment flag queue on IPS
./thread
@Magisch I think I've already spent as much :P
Comments on IPS are actually pretty easy, due to the strict comment policy ;)
'You get removed, and you get removed, and you get removed!'
Select one: 1) your comment get remove, or 2) you get suspended
09:53
You'll be assigned an armed government official to watch you sit at a computer. Limited idling is begrudgingly tolerated, but any pee break will reset your sentence unless you take a cellphone with you and send at least one question to your desktop for answering.
@JohnDvorak Poor official. He'll be getting wet feet.
eugh
@JohnDvorak (I think I've read similar punishment before...)

Or maybe tie them to their chair in front of their computer and have random sites open on some random interval where about half the sites will blast sound at max volume. And all of them should play dubstep. Bonus points if multiple sites playing sound open at the same time, any such site drags the browser to a halt. Reminds me of something.

How do those poor lost souls that ask programming questions on Meta Stack Exchange end up there?
11:52
11
Q: Why do users often ask blatantly off-topic questions here on Meta?

ɪʙᴜɢFor quite some time, newer users seem to ask a lot of blatantly off-topic questions here on Meta. They are mostly programming questions that should have been closed asked on Stack Overflow, along with some other questions that would fit into Super User or Server Fault, and a few others that have ...

Jason C was on Law.SE (or, at least its meta)... I guess he won't return to the Tavern..? Or already forgotten about its existence...
Can't Stack Overflow just officially recommend Quora or Reddit or whatever for people who just want an answer and don't care much for rules? Seems like that would solve a lot of our problems.
Many people seem to have no idea there are a bunch of other places on the internet they can get answers, so they don't need to keep trying to force their way into a place they don't want to be and that doesn't want them.

1 hour later…
13:00
@Dukeling it wouldn't solve anything. Because guess what ... we're pretty good at answering. Something which a lot of other sites lack. So you send them there, and they come back anyway. If they didn't come from there in the first place. And furthermore, "just want an answer" probably describes >90% of the users.
@Bart Maybe, but maybe not. Won't know unless we try...
Never gonna happen though
recommended to Yahoo! Answers instead
@Bart never say never
Never!

When I was new I "just wanted an answer" around 200 times before I ever considered answering
Guess the only alternative is then to create a competitor that works exactly the same Stack Overflow, have it overtake Stack Overflow in popularity, try this experiment, and then use the results to show the team that it actually works. Hold on, I just need 6-8 weeks.
There you go. That's your weekend project.
I "just wanted an answer" one single time. Something with Oracle database misbehaving. Posted on asp101 or aspfree (not sure how it was called back then, at 2001), and the rest is history.
Maybe 2000
Forget this website; we're making a competitor site without CoC where people ask/answer for monetized tokens. — Joe Coder Jul 29 at 6:30
I've tried to ask questions on the Unity3D forums, and what is supposed to be their version of a Q&A ... what a hellscape.
13:19
I got hooked to that forum, became one of the top users, moderator, and had Circle of Wizards in their Lounge. :D
A pre-den den?
13:49
Most people start off just wanting an answer, but the question is who's willing to put in some effort to get a better answer, and who isn't.
And also who wants to ask a question that just won't get an answer here (because it's off topic).
14:02
@Somewhat Mail the professor, make it a sob-story, and get an extension :)
Now... how to write a sob-story might be a good question for writing? :P
Smells like spam.

Some @Facebook facts Facebook accepts a caps lock on version of your password. If you mistypes your username/ email, there is a system to auto correct it. You can still use emails that removed from your account to login.
inb4 it autocorrects your password
#convenient
password auto correction is a missing feature
I'd like to see that feature in fb
I was already miffed when site I wanted to log into today said "we have no account with that email address"
next is "reversed password",
when your password is abcdef, all of these log you in: abcdef, ABCDEF, fedcba, FEDCBA :)
15:40
@ɪʙᴜɢ few years ago, someone made a whatsapp message and it spread like fire. The post says, when you have an issue at an ATM counter (for example, a theft is threatening you to take money), put the card and enter pin in reverse order. It'll alert to nearest police station. lol
lot's of people believed it's true
they don't even think what if the pin is 1221
@OptimusPrime i sorta thought it originated from China?
don't know
did you got that msg?
yep, Chinese version
@Bart may be a temporary issue or your account has been deleted
@ɪʙᴜɢ same here. Malayalam version
technology made it easy
@Bart Either use a one-mail-for-all, or find a provider that supports (infinite/enough) mail aliases, then register a spree of [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
15:44
@ɪʙᴜɢ For that, I'm using hackerone and bugcrowd
@OptimusPrime ... Malayalam, the language of palindromemordnilap?
[email protected] and username+anything+bugcrowdninja.com
same for password, base+site, e.g. mypasswordstackoverflow, mypasswordgithub, mypasswordgoogle
@ɪʙᴜɢ the word itself is palindrome
got your password
;p
@OptimusPrime Of course, I use a variant: stackmypasswordoverflow, gitmypasswordhub, goomypasswordgle :)
15:47
I don't trust password managers. So I've a printed list of all of my usernames, email addresses and passwords. Kept it in my locker
There was an even smarter move. Background, in China PII leaking is a severe issue and your PII is sold "everywhere", this creates a lot of spam SMS and spam phone calls
@OptimusPrime I have them stored digitally, encrypted with an asymmetric key, then I store the private key physically and upload that encrypted text everywhere.
Kevin B, the name that reminds me of a==1&&a==2&&a==3
i just remember each and every unique password flawlessly
good memory for you
hmm.. i thought this was room17, then when i clicked it realized i wasn't in the room i thought i was
15:51
My current password policy is base + variation, so I may have iBug, iBag, iBog, uBig, iBung, iVug, !Bug, etc.
very easy to mess yourself up before a hacker hacks them
I usually won't manually use them. Use nodejs to create a wordlist and apply it to burp intruder with 20 threads per second
that's inefficient when the base is 10+ chars long
We lost EJP? S/he had considerable network knowledge and I, for one, am bitterly disappointed:( EJP was worth more than tens of thousands of Sunday-Night-Special homework-dump burner accounts. — Martin James yesterday
that's true. But the fact is that, I won't bruteforce often
for an average internet user, burp intruder plus social engineering might work
15:57
yup
hope the attacker won't get an ip ban
he'll get an ip bang
rate in facebook is true but the same in google is a lie
some smart guys have used their birthdays in passwords, but that turned out to be a trick because what the password actually contained was "20890231", 100 years after their actual birth year, plus an invalid date :)
some people use their mobile number as password
@ɪʙᴜɢ when using proxy, that kind of problems may occur
the scripts won't get loaded
yep, I use VPN all the time because you know China hellbanned it all
16:03
in UAE, you can't use vpn. lol
@OptimusPrime not "the script didn't load", but "loading the reCAPTCHA script required reCAPTCHA"
in China though, it's not explicitly (written in law) forbidden but "factually" and "forcibly" forbidden.
and that's why you see a lot of nested horizontal rules, every rule denotes a layer of reCAPTCHA that failed to load
one question. Do you like the communist ruling in China?
absolutely, completely, unconditionally against them
one of the only demons that survived through late 1980s and early 1990s
16:10
great
not great, the demon is still alive and penetrating its venomous tentacles into every deepest corners of the Chinese's everyday life
They're torturing tibet. right?
yes, as well as uyghurs in Xinjiang
they tried to take Arunachal Pradesh from India. But the current indian govt is dare enough to prevent them
previous govt really su**ed
they built hundends of "re-educational camps" (official name) and inside they do the same as what Nazi did in concentration camps
16:18
When terrorist entered into PoK, killed 2 soldiers, chopped their heads and taken it with them to pakistan, that govt didn't do anything
@OptimusPrime not familiar with territories under dispute with adjacent countries, so I'd not comment on that
But the current govt, asked army to attack back. Surgical strikes on myanmar and Pak
@ɪʙᴜɢ afaik, china doesn't have such a problem.
But we have such problems
@OptimusPrime govt vs terrorism?
terrorist attacks
then... just pray for the govt to be able to win them
16:22
Mumbai attack, pathankot attack, etc
it's not continouse. But happen suddenly
yeah, tough and intractable to defend against
terrorist from myanmar attacked once and killed few soldiers. Army went to myanmar by crossing the border, killed hundreds of terrorists and destroyed their camp. Myanmar govt knew about this after everything
same happened with pakisthan
that somehow reminded me of Turkey people's attacking Dutch consulate, which was some big news across the world
N Africa, middle-east and SE Asia are severely afflicted areas of terrorism
yeah
worst thing is, kerala govt support terrorists
police, once caught few of them with weapons. When police enters that building under construction, the terrorists were practice how to kill people by using dummy bodies
There have been a few small calls for the U.S. government to label India as a "state sponsor of terrorism", but I disagree with those
16:27
regional govt ≠ state
Home minister, who control police dept, then said they're practicing yoga
practicing... wtf?
because they're muslims and muslims are vote banks for their party
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Are you sure? I think they're talking about pakistan.
US call pakistan so and have issues with them. That't why pak, currently deal with china
@OptimusPrime There are much louder calls to label Pakistan as such, but also a few small calls to label India too
The current central govt always took critical actions against terrorism
But previous govt failed to do so
16:31
@OptimusPrime that's some indication to the fact that some middle east countries enforce that Shia and Sunny govern the state(s) alternately is a good move
@ɪʙᴜɢ muslims together vote for a party, as said from mosque
so, political parties try to satisfy them to get huge amount of votes
@ɪʙᴜɢ in india, shiya support hindus.
and that's partially why China govt has been a coward towards muslims
repeatedly switching to Google search
@ɪʙᴜɢ for what?
I know little about whatever in S. Asia and SE. Asia.
@ɪʙᴜɢ afaik, there are good muslims who respect all other religious, as well as bad people who say islam is the only religion and rest of all should be killed
@ɪʙᴜɢ ;p
16:37
yes, all kinds of people exist
I saw lot of such people in real life
There are even worst things
I have schoolmates who believe in Islam, and they're good ones to get along with
At the time of freedom struggle, british removed all powers of khaleefa in turkey and muslims in india created an organizations to fight against it. Then, in kerala, they killed hundreds of hindus for nothing
then they're no different than extremism
The Malabar rebellion (also known as the Moplah rebellion and Māppila Lahaḷa in Malayalam) was an armed uprising in 1921 against British authority and Hindus in the Malabar region of Southern India by Mappilas and the culmination of a series of Mappila revolts that recurred throughout the 19th century and early 20th century. The 1921 rebellion began as a reaction against a heavy-handed crackdown on the Khilafat Movement, a campaign in defense of the Ottoman Caliphate, by the British authorities in the Eranad and Valluvanad taluks of Malabar. In the initial stages, a number of minor clashes took...

@ɪʙᴜɢ I've moved two message that are close to or crossing a line where you dismiss a group of people. I rather not have that here in this room. A similar warning to watch tone and subject goes to @OptimusPrime. I don't want to silence a different view of events but as soon as it doesn't look like there isn't room or consideration for a different take on things I get very uncomfortable.
If you still feel it needs to be discussed, please find a different venue.

DBA @ SO?
yep, she truncate table comments; these days
is that why they appointed a new CM?
@rene wouldnt it be simpler to just run that as a job every 10 minutes?
10 minutes is a long gap
@OptimusPrime I don't think so
19:21
For a job that deletes all comments indiscriminately, no frequency is frequent enough.
accidentally truncate table posts;

Is there a rep-limit for the no-edit of self-deleted posts as explained here?
no
and IIRC it's self-deleted questions

It would make sense for the spam scenario but not so when you are up a but in the rep ....
I asked because it looks like a bit of hindrance if you're trying to work-out from a Q-ban with deleted questions: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/373481/…
21:16
What do you guys think of this proposed edit to the banning FAQ? (I want feedback before it's put into place.)
