@JonEricson honestly a meta post saying that would - probably - maybe - might make no difference - but is worth a try. Don't delete the comment. It's authentic. The teams are people too (or so it is rumoured)

6:46 AM
@Dukeling sure! They should blink and flash in different color every second.
Considering the latest design changes (adding underlines to all links, adding borders around stuff when clicking on it) I won't be surprised if it really happens... o_p
@YvetteColomb hmm? TL;DR? Sounds like some drama I've missed?

7:06 AM
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I wouldn't say that you missed it.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard more many broader things like the redesigns and new user sticker and so on

@TravisJ you log my page hits on SE? ;)
(or anywhere?! :))
@JourneymanGeek but Jon isn't involved (directly) in those...

I read them like a diary every day before I go to bed.

:D

7:10 AM
weasel words

considering if to be offended that @Travis thinks the pages I read are so boring :P

Boring? I need something to think about while I fall asleep :P

My daughter always look for things to be offended from... e.g. this morning she woke up and I filled a bottle of water for her. Then she got angry because turns out my wife made her brother a bottle of water too (he got up before her) and... she put more water for him! What a scandal. :D

@TravisJ I think about my life...

@TravisJ oh. So now I'm honored. :P

7:14 AM
:)
@Somewhat Lately, to be honest, I can't even get any thinking in. I sleep within like a minute of laying down.

Since I sleep less than four hours these days, I kind of fall asleep before hitting bed.... ;)

Just lucky to even make it to the pillow lol

I almost always need more than 30 minutes before I can fully shut down my brain/not thinking anything... otherwise, I will think further and cancel sleeping :/

@Somewhat That happens to me when I am getting like 9 hours of sleep per night. It's nice. But lately I have been lucky to get 6 or 7 hours of sleep.

@TravisJ lol yeah.. I don't ever bother taking my share of the blanket from my wife who naturally wraps herself with the whole blanket.... I just fall like a rock and sleep. We have a ceiling fan during night... oh... maybe that's why I sneeze a lot. :D

7:20 AM
#epiphany!

@Somewhat worse even than Windows with its updates..... :P

I was at an event last Saturday and they had a picture booth, not even joking, it was down for like 20 minutes because Windows update kicked in at some point.

@TravisJ huh? You work for PayPal? You pp-randy?

it's kind of ironical(?) that I have to suggest my brain "not to think anything" to sleep quickly.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard No I am taking that, and implementing a custom version of it into some software.

7:22 AM
Why is this 404??
Bug?
If no profile, how he got a card?

so it's like, I'm thinking "don't think" inside my head while on the bed...

@TravisJ rofl
@Somewhat count sheeps... my daughter do it for years now with success. ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard His username is randstraw (github.com/randstraw)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard I tried that, and this happened

7:25 AM
@TravisJ huh, so GH got a bug! The small avatar got a wrong link:
Do they have meta?
@Somewhat lol

Guess it only works for children then... :D

@Somewhat lol that's hilarious

In olden times when I slept a lot I had some tricks... will try recalling @some of them and share.
well, some tricks can't be shared here, but I'm pretty sure I had a trick which I can share here safely. :P

Can a a mod tell me why my comment under this answer was deleted? According to meta, there's no other way to check that.

@BartekBanachewicz not a mod but these days any comment with even tiny hint of being unwelcome is deleted.
Do you remember what was the comment?
Anyway @Andy and @YvetteColomb are both SO mods so they can tell for sure why your comment was deleted.

8:41 AM
@BartekBanachewicz Well, if it's no longer needed, then it's understandably deleted, so what did you comment?

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard yep, I said that the answer is dangerous
@Somewhat ^
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard sure, but it shouldn't happen silently and without me knowing about it

now, that's peculiar. I mean, if saying "dangerous" is unwelcome or even rude, then I don't know what else to do...

@BartekBanachewicz well, the answer author probably didn't like it, flagged, and moderator deleted the comment. I won't go into it now, just letting you know it's the likely reason.

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard "I don't like that comment" shouldn't be a valid reason, that's why I'm asking

SE is switching to focusing on people these days, and put their personal feelings as first priority. Other things like content or content quality are secondary to this.
That's the dry facts. ^
@BartekBanachewicz it wasn't. It is these days.
Welcome to the Welcome Wagon era!

8:55 AM
So welcoming

Anyway... if you really think an answer is really dangerous and should be deleted, don't comment. Flag it and explain in detail to the moderator.

Ha ha. Your welcome.
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard err, really? I'd expect "flag shouldn't be used to judge technical accuracy"?

@BartekBanachewicz Just that? ;) Or was there more to it? It seems there's another comment that explains what's wrong and an alternative to fix it... Did your comment add anything to that?

I'm not going to play a guessing game
My comment disappeared. I want to know why, and if it was moderated, what was the reason, so that I can complain if I disagree.

@BartekBanachewicz Nah, just wanted to point out that the immediate jump to unwelcoming in this chatroom might have been a little overkill.

9:04 AM
I obviously think my comment was fine, I wouldn't leave it if I thought otherwise

@Somewhat it's beyond technical accuracy. If following an answer can lead to IRL danger or bad stuff to happen, it justifies deletion, IMO.
e.g. answer with code that appears innocent, but actually contains some hidden, nasty, virus.

in this case it's a horrendous security malpractice

That if followed can lead to security breach? This one is in the gray zone.

actually, I might miss something, because our mod wrote this
+1 for query select ... where user=? and pass=?Bohemian ♦ Feb 21 '13 at 6:59
when the answer never used this approach...

@Somewhat I have no idea how anyone could have upvoted it, and with this specific reason specifically

9:09 AM
He might have been sarcastic. Back then he wasn't a mod.

well, anyone who doesn't know or care about SQLi would upvote it as long as it "works"

He didn't actually downvote, though
@Somewhat there's still the issue of unhashed passwords

@Somewhat more like doesn't know or care about basic security measures.

also if you "don't know of care about SQLi" you shouldn't be touching user auth

unfortunately, students doing their assignments might care less...

9:12 AM
I can't shake the feeling that you're trying to find excuses

That's real life.

the answer would be fine with a disclaimer to NEVER actually implement it
instead, it starts with this:
> Implement the below code:

Would editing the answer be fair there?

@Bart I wouldn't edit an answer to change the original intent by 180 degrees

Just as the answer shouldn't be deleted solely on grounds of technical accuracy, neither should a comment.

9:20 AM
Doesn't SO have a meta somewhere on how to handle that kind of answers?

I'd rather edit it as "Technically you could do X, which would resolve the issue you're having. But keep in mind that for reason Y that's really bad practice and you shouldn't do that ..." blablabla @BartekBanachewicz. I.e. don't destroy the answer, just clarify.

Could a comment be deleted on the grounds of being dangerously wrong? I believe an answer can be.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, it says, leave a comment and downvote.
@JohnDvorak - I haven't seen a dangerously wrong answer deleted, because it needs to remain as a signpost of -infinity to others not to use it.

@TravisJ It's missing a 'write your own, better one' step, but that seems about right ;).

@Tinkeringbell True, ideally.
Anyway, I just realized I wasted like 4 days building a paypal api integration that should have been a braintree ("a paypal service") api integration. So I am going to sleep =/

> This solution showcases two extremely bad practices: concatenating dirty strings allowing SQL injection, and assuming that passwords are stored verbatim in the database. As is, it's actively harmful. –

user310756
compared to

user310756
> This will work but it is dangerous as it allows easy SQL injection. You should be using PreparedStatement instead of concating select script on your own. So: connection.prepareStatement("select * from user_table where username = ? and password = ?"); p.setString(1, "Tom") ...

his comment is about SQL injection + unhashed password, especially for unhashed password which isn't mentioned on other comments?

user310756
> Remember that hashing is not encryption. You should store hashed passwords. JASYPT have the right idea, i.e. salt + iterate your hash

@YvetteColomb that's under the Q

user310756
9:32 AM
@BartekBanachewicz here

also would my comment be fine if it said "two extremely bad practices: concatenating dirty strings allowing SQL injection (already mentioned by others), and... "
@YvetteColomb oh sorry, there's also that one

@YvetteColomb hehe lol :D

anyway, that's under a different answer

user310756
I think take out the extreme and bold. That's my ten cents

user310756
yeh I know it's under a diff answer, my point is, it's been covered.

9:34 AM
excuse me?

user310756
@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard slap

I think we agree that a comment under a different answer down deep is much different to a comment under the accepted answer on the top, relating to this answer specifically.
@YvetteColomb Also this is an extremely bad practice. I can hardly think of a more obvious and blatant, and yet so common security flaw.

user310756
@BartekBanachewicz I'm suggesting that once you start bolding things in comments, it can become extremely annoying to potential flaggers. Either way I don't care, I'm trying to give you a heads up on what's likely to be flagged.

fair enough
again, I don't really construct my comments trying to hide from flaggers
that's not what the flags should be about. And making comment deletion hidden and rampant flagging free isn't helping
but eh.

Hmm... are you insinuating that once a comment trips up any 15+ rep viewer, it's free kill for mods?

user310756
9:37 AM
there's also issues, people learning programming often are just being asked to validate input. They are not implementing it in a real website. It leads to a range of questions that don't always encompass best practices. At some point I've learnt to walk away.

@JohnDvorak that's basically it

user310756
@JohnDvorak nope and if this turns into a meta post of endless pings about my opinion I'm not replying.

user310756
I didn't delete the comment. I'm explaining what irritates people

yeah, but it's not just "irritated people". A mod has approved that flag.

I'm asking about the general atmosphere in TL + CEO's throne room

user310756
9:38 AM
the thing that irritates me is when people make mountains over molehills. Mods have lives also. We're doing our best

The system has IMHO failed.

user310756
@JohnDvorak nope

@YvetteColomb And high rep users are here to help.

user310756
there's is no general atmosphere. Mods try to stop themselves from being burnt out.

@JohnDvorak no need for 15+ rep, post author can flag with 1 rep as well.

9:39 AM
And I never really understood the thick lines in some permissions between mods and high rep users

oh, this wheel of blame thing is brilliant

user310756
@BartekBanachewicz yep but the mods cop it on meta. Hence my defensiveness. I honestly have some pressing things to do. I popped in to answer the pings.

9:46 AM
well, this could be fixed if the room was unfrozen I suppose

Why not just a new room?

because then the duplicate room police will arrest me

As Master of Duplicates I can reassure you, that it won't happen. ;)

@ShadowtheWelcomingWizard @BartekBanachewicz not a SO mod but I think that valid not welcoming flags would come with an eventual reminder to knock it off.

So Smokey is down because Metasmoke is down? That's not good... better fix it so that even without that site Smokey will still report spam, even if it won't be logged.
(probably adding bunch of try..catch to the code.)

@OptimusPrime I think that second bee should be dead too.
If the skin they pierce is sufficiently thick, a bee can only sting one as their stinger rips out and get's stuck... I think piercing another bee (bee's have exoskeletons) fits that criteria too :)

@Tinkeringbell The second be should be suspended for violating be nice policy

@OptimusPrime Really? I was told to assume good intentions, this looks like an accident.

@SmokeDetector lol 'I made a video of how to rip off YouTube videos and posted it on YouTube, why did they suspend my account?'

Maybe worth a warning, not a suspension :P

6:17 PM
@Tinkeringbell That flower might be rene :)

@MartinJames Oh.. Killing @rene is definitely not nice. That's a suspension and a lawyer :P

@Tinkeringbell Not necessarily. When bees sting other chitinous insects, the exoskeleton they penetrate shatters a bit rather then cleanly pierces, allowing the little hooks to be removed again.

@Magisch Really? Nice fact :)
I'll take your word for it, since you sting too :P

at least that's what someone told me
I'm not an insectologist
