@JourneymanGeek ;) I guess I could convert it to one at some point with some heuristics, but it seems pretty straightforward as a problem to me. Maybe they were already aware of this?

12:33 AM
@TravisJ errrr
tbh, the impact of it feels like a marketing side thing, and I trust them a lot less than our SREs and Devs (SORRY!)

Does SE even have control of how Google serves that info?

@Catija I think there's some structured data thing going on - but but.... ya, that needs an actual insider to answer ;p

I don't know what "structured data things" are... but... yeah.

also... is there a tl;du (too long; didn't understand) for the latest blog?
ergh, HQ2 = 2nd headquarter? I don't think I'd guess that in the first place

@HTTP datascientists + amazon is trying to start a new HQ and is shopping around for the best tax breaks place to set it up in.
tbh, its better than the clickbaity shit we got for a while.

It's still clickbaity for me, because I thought it's related to affiliated ads... because... Amazon!

naw its all abooout

What about a fairy tale about kingdom of amazon ... you know the kind where it's divided into two: half, mainly tall muscular, strong women living in a kingdom existed in a sub dimension. Those are known in the mythology as Amazon warriors. The other half lives on earth, they are mainly skinny geeky men who can program, who also works for Amazon. Earth Amazon mascot is a gigantic sales person ...

they quite literally don't talk about affliate ads. Much

@Ano It's not just adding the text, it's also adding translations for all sites. And maintaining it when the rules change.

Ano
@FTP Other than a few lapses, I basically paused SE for three years before beginning larger sprees of anonymous editing
@Rob Transifex + there aren't that many localized sites; it's unlikely to change in the future
@Shog9 Just a curious question: you once said back in 2011 that you'd be launching the German SO site in a few weeks. What was your attitude toward localization then, and what stopped you then?

Rob
3:53 AM
I'm not talking about implementing translations.. but the translations themselves. It's still work for a somewhat debatable improvement. If you try it, and it doesn't work, you then know it's not possible.
SE already uses a translation framework: Moonspeak

@Ano I can't, no. It's hard-coded, and I have neither permission to commit nor permission to build.
pretty sure Raymond Chen once wrote a blog post about how many dozens of people were involved in making some trivial change to Notepad. It's not nearly that bad here, but... it's still more than "one"

one to review it
one to implement the change

Have you eaten as Swad on North Lamar?

Ano
@Catija Indeed I have

Your thoughts? I've heard it's good... and I've enjoyed it... but I'm not an expert.

What's the closest thing in South India to good Texas brisket?

4:16 AM
I really like their paratha.

Ano
@Catija It's better than any South Indian food I've tasted in San Diego, and is only beaten by some higher-end restaurants up in OC/LA

Wow, that's high praise, I would think?
@Shog9 Isn't beef sort of difficult to come by as food in India?

Ano
@Catija The Indian diaspora is not as big in SD as it is in Orange County, LA, or the Bay Area

@Catija beats me. hence the question

Well, it's not huge here at all... I know that there are pockets but I don't think it's that big?

Sound travels slower in water. Check to make sure your house hasn't flooded

Ano
@Shog9 How can I check for floods if my house is 1100+ miles away?!

user315433
~1500 m/s in water vs 330 in air.

@Ano I think there's a temple behind the Half Price books on Lamar? I'm not sure what it is but I see women dressed up in sari there some days and they have lots of people directing traffic.

user315433
Not flooded.

4:21 AM
I'm wrong anyway. It travels faster?

Ano
@Shog9 Yes. I was waiting for you to search that but @FTP gave it away.

user315433
Yes, denser medium helps.

> This means that the sound wave travels over four times faster than it would in air, but it takes a lot of energy to start the vibration.

Ano
@Catija Near Fry's Electronics? (Side note: I've gone up there and never seen any such traffic.)

@Ano No, the one at Koenig.

Ano

user315433
Light travels slower in water, OTOH. Something something two types of waves.

@Shog9 Your statement would have been correct if we were referring to the visible notification

Rob
@FTP Indeed. And the 'optical boom' looks amazing: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6b/Cerenkov_Effect.jpg

@Ano So if ftp's speed is correct, that tone should've taken about an hour and a half to get to you from your house then. How long did it really take?

@Shog9 less than ten minutes...

Ano
4:26 AM
@Shog9 Actually, it's much faster since sound and I have to travel in a solid object to get between those places.

Sounds about right then
status-byde

Ano
@Shog9 Do you use the swipe feature of your keyboard?

I have enough trouble just trying to hit the letters with my fat thumbs

Ano
4:28 AM
It's supported in the Google and Samsung keyboards, and the former comes with stock Android and can be installed in iOS
@Shog9 Swipe keyboard will fix that

Oh, I have the feature, I just don't use it

Ano
@Shog9 Use it. It will save you a lot of time in typing.

What's the swipe for square braces?

@Shog9 Too many swipes with a hammer?

Ano
@Shog9 It's only really useful for words

4:30 AM
Too bad. Faster square braces would save time
Gotta press and hold on t and y for now

I'd edit it for you but...

I'm over it

Ano
And if you're on a phablet, you can collapse the keyboard to one side and make it smaller

Welcome to March!

@JourneymanGeek - The structured data stuff, may also be rich data as a side note, is controlled by a dev by marking up either the page in the head element, or the elements with certain data attributes.

(no, I have no idea why the handset went from slightly odd to perfect)
@TravisJ Oh, @Catija is the one who asked
I don't know exactly what it is but I know enough to fake it ;p
and I still think that's a thing for main meta

To be honest, making a post about it would take quite a bit of research that I was hoping to avoid in the hopes that whoever is in charge would realize that using that utility was causing a smaller set of search results to be served through Google.

6:34 AM
Its meta. get the basic stuff started and people will start chipping in in the comments ._.

Hi, my name is Travis, and I am a perfectionist.
It either all or nothing.

Someone at the company has to have access to the Google Search Console for stackoverflow.com
They would be the most informed person with regards to this topic.

@TravisJ they probably do!

It is actually so bad that when I google I have to also type in stackoverflow.com
(horribly inconvenient in case anyone was wondering)

6:37 AM
but there's $variable number of developers in 3-5 different product lines who sometimes work cross project + I think their number crunchy people would be involved and...

#thecrew

(I mean, I've seen folks from ads and careers poke into meta, and vaguely remember them fixing some QA related stuff)

(If I had to wager a guess, I would blame ask Kevin Montrose)
I could also be wrong (psh, because that happens), and showing only one result in Google could somehow be beneficial to the efficiency if it was always navigated through. Although, the problem with Stack Overflow is that your answer is totally there, or there, or there, it is in one of these questions I just can't seem to remember... ah! There it is.

and if google does it right, you just stop there

user202362
@TravisJ beer and cupcakes don't go together, meh think ...

6:49 AM
waaat
Yeah, but that doesn't happen when broad terms are used, which is a majority of the time. Often, when you are sure there are related solutions to a problem you aren't exactly sure how to approach, casting a wide net is a good idea. That approach is stifled by the current search results. It isn't really Stack Overflow's fault, it is google's fault for only including one result when there should be many, solely because it shows the marked up data in a little navigation system.
Or, to meme it...
One does not simply onebox Stack Overflow.
