@AndrewT. No such command 'ahem'.
oops, morning
hmm
@AndrewT. what did your message say before it was deleted? was it a smokedetector command?
I ask because it might have triggered an error
want make sure everything's working and I didn't do anything wrong
Dec 6 at 20:23, by angussidney
By the way everyone, sorry if Smokey acts a little weirdly/differently over the next few days, we’ve just done a massive refactor of our chat system and we’ve encountered a few bugs that we weren’t anticipating.
this: !!/ *blabla*', ... then edited to !!/*blabla*', ...
ahhh
ok that explains the error perfectly
thank you
you just caught a bug
unwittingly
12:15 AM
I don't know whether to be happy or not :O
user315433
Bugs these days... are kind of small. Smokey had a much better one once.

The /users API method does not have an option to return users sorted by Id... ?
user315433
One would think that sorting by "creation" should have that effect, but... on Meta it goes 128546, 129592, -1, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...
user315433
Why do George Claghorn and Jeff Hardy predate Jeff Atwood and even Community itself?
Early devs?
The real founders of SO?
2:04 AM
Odd, though... despite their account age, their user ID is really high.
Maybe someone messed with it?
@CrazyIvan their SO account also has the same date creation, though Jeff beat them on SO by 1 year

Hey could I get some re-open votes for stackoverflow.com/questions/47696585/… ; looks like a gold badge user made a mistake
@AndrewT. so I think it's MSO/MSE separation shenanigans

Do they have audits outside of SO?
huh what how did a user with no posts get 293 rep

@Joshua Some edits, but its puppet-master also posted an answer once. It got self-deleted eventually but reputation was kept because the post was around long enough for reputation to "freeze in".
user315433
And yes, I voted to reopen.
user315433
Smokey also has an opinion on duplicates....
user315433
page parameter of the API is 1-based, boo.
@Joshua I'll vote to reopen because the dupe is bad, but I'm considering stackoverflow.com/a/477578/2821954 as an alternative (not specific to Android, but I see good tips, though no Java code)

@SmokeDetector What's with the title, is there now a block for URL-only titles?
@CrazyIvan: I have no idea how SmokeDetector could tell but that's spam.
user315433
No, there is no block, unless someone pushed it on Sunday afternoon (unlikely); URL-only titles showed up about 10 hours ago. This is just a spammer being overcautious.

@Joshua The page metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/97027 explains how the post was detected.

For example, the domain newmusclesupplements.com was linked in 176 prior posts, all of them spam. That's just one of several reasons.

@CrazyIvan or seeing what gets through
@JourneymanGeek But if they shouldn't be doing that many reviews... the limit shouldn't be set so high?
@Catija Well, some people might be able to? ;p
But he clearly.... is having issues
I don't know much about review audits as none of the sites I use have them... but I do feel like I hear about them being... faulty from time to time? I'm sure you're a better judge, though.
@Catija they are seriously annoying, but pretty hard to fail with some degree of caution
3:40 AM
Do you know it's an audit when it's given to you?
The two times I failed, I ploughed through several hundred reviews
errr
kinda?
Some are plain dumb
there's also sometimes tells
or you go look at the question and its a deleted answer ;p
Rob
Rob
Suggested edits audits are ridiculously easy to spot
Low quality posts are usually pretty easy to spot. A long, seemingly well written post with zero points from an anonymous user?
Rob
Rob
Almost guaranteed to be an audit expecting 'looks ok'
A barely coherent question, with 5 upvotes? Gonna be a closed/deleted question
ya
the proper landmines are very rare
Rob
Rob
3:44 AM
It does get frustrating, for me at least, when voting on borderline questions
In that case I feel you don't really have a choice, it could go either way. So open the link and vote accordingly
yup
Opening the link/trying to improve is kinda the "secret" to never failing a review audit ;p
Does kinda pull you off the queue tho
Rob
Rob
Yeah
I'm sure there's a userscript that detects audits anyway
Haven't really bothered looking for one though
The landmines I've been getting are where the wrong action ended up being taken.
what does it mean "kinda pull you off the queue"
Rob
Rob
Breaks the flow of reviewing
yup
Means you go off the review queue, to the post, and go sniff out what's happening
3:48 AM
If the number of failed audits I get on deleted questions is up I'm going to start petitioning for a "flag this audit" too. Audits should be blatantly obvious what the right answer is.
Rob
Rob
@Joshua I'm pretty sure most audits can be invalidated by your vote outside the queue
If it's a terrible question with upvotes and no downvotes, it might be used as an audit as a 'good question'
Downvote it, and it'll no longer be used
@Rob: If the question or answer is deleted it won't work.
Rob
Rob
Yeah, that gets more tricky
@Joshua that its not there is a sign its an audit ;p
or not
@Joshua feedback on review audits have been suggested
probably not happening.
That's a good point; I should just hit skip whenever the target doesn't exist
3:50 AM
or when you're not sure ;p
I've been at 100% that audit was wrong for every audit I fail for the past year.
(due more to my liberal use of the skip function when I don't know what the answer is than any particular skil--I'm only likely to fail a really bad audit)
Rob
Rob
It'd be nice if audits were pulled only from moderator actions
The community in general is not always the best compass for the correct action
Made worse by automatic comments on posts that other reviewers see and blindly agree with..
I've contested moderator actions before. I've even won one.
Rob
Rob
Sure; everyone makes mistakes. But it's far more likely that a moderator made the correct call than a random member of the community
@Catija If you're curious, this is what suggested edit audits look like: stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/17379318
But an audit ban because it looks like a moderator blew it is going to get personal. :(
Rob
Rob
3:55 AM
You have to get multiple failures to get a ban
> Our system has identified this edit as possible spam; please review carefully
hah
I've gotten review banned
As a mod
I was ... embarassed ;p
lol
let me guess; you unbanned yourself
not that I have a problem with that
3:56 AM
Actually no!
So are they actual edit suggestions from the past or do they have a script that makes them up?
I felt that was unethical!
I brought it up on public chat and another mod did
@Catija they have a markov chain that makes it up
its amusingly bad
Well, I don't see a benefit to upgrading that for channels, so I think you'll be stuck with it for a while ;)
I gave up on suggested edits due to what I think is an ADA bug
Rob
Rob
That said, I've actually seen suggested edits like that which were legitimate proposals
Legitimate in that it wasn't an audit; not that it was someone being sincere with their proposal
3:58 AM
actually no. someone else asked for it to be lifted.
lololol
I've definitely seen some pretty crappy suggested edits... especially on ELL.
let's just say a banned mod is probably a worse problem than a mod that makes review mistakes
on the other hand if the mod is bad we'd know about it due to the flames in chat and meta
in Root Access on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Oct 3 '15 at 2:48, by Journeyman Geek
heh. One sign you're doing too many reviews. You recognise the exact same question getting posted as an audit.
lololol
That also happens
But I think I was doing like 200 reviews or so a day
I wonder if they've had issues with mods being bad at review in the past... seems like they should exempt mods from them...
wait there's a badge for it
4:01 AM
@Catija I consider review bans a chance to sit down and do something else ;p
You know what we need... hat participation badges... It'd be like an annual "I love hats" badge to show that you were around for Winter Bash... it could even be multi-tiered... 1, 5, 20 hats or something (per site).
@Joshua which is part of the problem ;p
We have badges to encourage people to review
oh I thought that meant there's a badge for getting a question for review and audit
then people abuse review to get badges, so we have limits and audits to catch people who abuse review...
Review badges are hard anywhere other than SO, I bet.
4:03 AM
@Catija curious how spam (or audit) is generated? try Flack Overstow!

long cat is long
@CrazyIvan Also, Tumbleweed...
4:14 AM
@CrazyIvan for now at least ;p
@Catija almost like yearling?
I'm kinda convinced there should be a badge for 10x yearling badges
(or even site swag, should it exist)
@JourneymanGeek Not really... Yearling is sort of flawed... if I earn 500 rep on a site, I'll get yearling for the next five years... but hats requires that you participate during that specific event.
It would almost be more like the "followed a proposal in A51" badge... if you didn't do it then, you can't ever get it.
@Catija yearling badges though kinda represent contributions to the site.
@Catija which is kinda meh
There's no other memory of having participated in Winter Bash... no way to commemorate how you did. A badge with three levels would do that for you.
Look at John's owl!
4:19 AM
Well, the only memory of having participated in Winter Bash is to photoshop the hat to your current display pic
user315433
Publicist is an interesting badge on meta sites: meta.stackoverflow.com/help/badges/61/publicist
user315433
Yearling is by far the most common on meta.so, despite the site being relatively young. I don't know if its 200 rep requirement refers to invisible meta rep, or main site rep...
Main rep, pretty sure.
I don't think they track "invisible" meta rep?
user315433
For Mortarboard and similar (Epic, Legendary), invisible meta rep is used. Why not for Yearling?
hah, ya
which confused the hell out of me
user315433

I don't like Warlords of Documentation: A Proposed Expansion of Stack Overflow being closed. There are tons of proposals that are made and are not implemented, or are reverted, or modified, or whatever.

hm
I don't have the rep on SO. Also... what can be added to it?
user315433
Maybe nothing, everyone moved on. But we don't close old discussions and proposals because of that.

It's not locked; just preventing new answers, which seems to be the correct course of action here

A: How to safely store a defective (bulging) lithium-ion battery

Journeyman Geek I had this happen, and I had to store it till I had time to drop by a designated ewaste centre which specifically accepted lithium ion batteries. (This is important. Throwing potentially inflammable materials in regular trash is bad. Only you can stop fires) There's likely no need to panic if ...

That is the kind of posts you expect from LifeHacks.

@JourneymanGeek isn't that the whole reason to go to LifeHacks?

A: How do I clean my computer using isopropyl alcohol?

Journeyman GeekIf you're using high purity isopropyl alcohol, the advantages are that it is non conductive (being a non polar solvent), is not terribly reactive with the things you'd normally find in a computer, and generally dries fast. Water is a polar solvent, so you don't want to be using it in computers in...

> (No, do not do this. isopropy alcohol is highly inflammable - it will evaporate into something that can be ignited at low temperature (13-15 degrees), and will catch fire at around 400 degrees C, and we do not want to be responsible for house fires. BAD BAD IDEA.) And since this is kinda being mentioned in the comments (Its potentially explosive under the right conditions - I do not recommend trying to blow up plastic water jugs unless you're a trained professional and/or a chemistry teacher).
