12:48 AM
My mum just told me that she doesn't know what the keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste are

1:04 AM
@YiJiang I don't assume most people know that.

@RebeccaChernoff Good ol' Reno 911
@YiJiang Hopefully you didn't beat her with a giant Ctrl + C

1:52 AM
Is pissed.

Hm?

Apple automatic reference counting.
It's confusing.
iOS 5 doesn't make me call release manually anymore.
So why does that make me unhappy?
I am confused. How does this work on older versions of the OS?

Well, I assume that it doesn't work if your target is less than iOS5?

No. That's what I thought.
You can target the older OS. It's a compiler setting. I assume that the compiler generates the memory commands for me.
@TimStone does that make any sense?

Ah.

2:02 AM
Does that make sense?
I just want to make sure that I wrapped my head around this correctly.

Yeah, but I'm not entirely convinced that it would generate more efficient code in all cases.

I didn't say it's more efficient. I just said that it's there.

No, they did :P

Well I am a bit edgy but I am about to give it a spin.
Let's see how badly this works...
@jcoldebrand - I mean things like code blocks that usually require 2 finger.

what do you call this in english?
degrade?

2:08 AM
Gradient?

@TimStone thank you!!!
I was killing me

No problem. :)

3:02 AM
So am I completely wrong here?

A: SQL Query to check rate limit

mootinatorI suspect this would be horribly slow, but for an arbitrary historical max hour, something like this might work (downvote me if I'm way off, I'm not a MySQL person): SELECT base.user, base.time COUNT(later.time) FROM messages base INNER JOIN messages later ON later.time BETWEEN base.time AND DAT...

The very first chatbot to ever visit the Stack Exchange network is now live!!!
You can head on over to the Ask Ubuntu General Room to say hi.
Simply @reply him and he will echo back what you say.
@RebeccaChernoff: How's that for cool?

sadly, it isn't. though I might actually call the other one useful. and it wasn't.
heh

What other one?

whatever that frickin' kitten one was

@RebeccaChernoff Whoah... I never did anything with a kitten.
You must have me mixed up with someone else.

I never said you did...I said there was another chatbot.

3:35 AM
There was...?
Aw.... :(
What became of it?

Well, the owner actually found a job :P

...and this one will be very useful when it's done.
It will perform user lookups, question searches, etc.

Hopefully? Honestly? I'll go with: diaf. q:

shakes fist at mountains of irrelevant documentation
What kind of server setup returns a 404 when your server can't be bothered to load the page? sighs

3:41 AM
Not mine, thank you very much :p
Times like this make me wish I had a less aggravating job, heh.

My userscript which automatically starred oy was like a chatbot.

I'll give you +1 for that.
Ah, nifty, my new toy is on its way.

I've made a few... stealthy edits to the question

Maybe they're talking about the logo? O_o

4:46 AM
Good Morning

5:01 AM
@YiJiang I smell a troll.

ios 5 released or not?

Note to self: when you procrastinate long enough, your OS vendor will release 1500 new APIs, some of which will break your half finished work.

i heard 200 new features added in ios 5

@ManjotSingh not yet. If you talk about it here, you will be banned, because it is not public yet.

Anything is possible, when you procrastinate enough. ;)

5:02 AM
@Moshe i'll not talk about it
WWDC

Although I will say that the current release notes were more than enough to convince me to keep it off of my phone for now.
Feature X, broke , use the old way. Feature Y, half implemented on some devices only.
I like both volume buttons to work, thank you.
Ok. Been a long day. Gnight!

5:18 AM
awesome work

5:42 AM
morning

good morning

good morning

if app is crashing on one device but work fine on other devices will android market accept the android app

the market yes but it will most likely get bad reviews

it crashing on wildfire but works fine on all other devices
i am still there in memory management
now time to upload an app to market

5:50 AM
@ManjotSingh then its specific to one device, that will not create bad impresion

well it won't crash only on Wildfire, it will crash on a multitude of other devices as well then

i was also getting confuse how to test on all other devices
as i am having one device
it is impossible to test on all existing android mobiles

if it is due to memory being too low on that particular device then there something you should know, there are other devices with way less memory
quite a lot of devices actually

all devices have different screen size and different resolutions
how should i take a general approach that it will support all existing android devices
like mini Xperia have small screen size and Wildfire has large screen

don't hardcode dimensions, use relative dimensions and widgets

5:56 AM
all layouts are relative layout

but there is a whole article about that on the developer site

ya i read
the thing is how to test on all devices

I don't believe that you read the documentation on that otherwise you would've read the section How to Test Your Application on Multiple Screens and wouldn't have to ask.

ya this is on simulator
but how to test the memory case
i did it with different layouts

you can set the RAM used for the emulator instances

6:03 AM
i am having 98Mb RAM but heap memory is only 2.8Mb
so cant we increase this heap memory to some extent
can device have 1Mb RAM?

2 mins ago, by Octavian Damiean
you can set the RAM used for the emulator instances

SD card memory is similar to RAM

can you tell me how to set RAM used for the emulator instances?

You don't like to read documentation do you?

6:08 AM
i started 3 weeks before i can not read all things at a time
it will take some time

well yes but you can of course read what you need

i read which is in need

no one said that you should read every article one by one (even though I think it is a good idea)

ya i read about audio,video,images,camera,JSON streaming,Layouts,How to behave on SO
i think i am not as fast as others
i started from the scratch
many up and downs i face while developing hope you can understand :)

6:45 AM
Maybe you could have used your time on chat to read, excuses excuses.

7:01 AM
Bless me tavern for I have sinned. I have committed atrocities with CSS and copied / pasted JQuery example code from blogs.

That's what happens when you ask a (#*$&(*#&$(#*& C programmer to build an order form :)

@ManjotSingh Using complete words, with a bit of capitalization would go really far.
Even blind people manage to use the shift key :)

7:30 AM
@TimPost ok i'll take care of it:)

@ManjotSingh I see a great contributor in you yet :) Just ask for help if you need it.
@ManjotSingh (preferably with sentences that use I instead of i)

thanks
I'll take care of it :)

is a valid tag, @TimPost?

@Sathya that screams meta tag to me

211 questions with

7:35 AM
@Sathya thats like on SO. Well, DUH, umm ..

:641731 ok, will post a question on Meta SO.

@Sathya Didn't realize it WAS on SO , I have a bit of a lag, didn't see your edit

@TimPost hi dude, how are you

@TimPost R you working on Java?

@ManjotSingh I mostly work with C, occasionally PHP, LISP or Python
@Damodar Doing well, you?

7:41 AM
Okay

@ManjotSingh I'm a systems programmer, 99% of my time is spent with C

@TimPost me awesome dude.. After a long time i see you online

@TimPost I worked on embedded C

all guys are muti-language-programmers great to meet you guys

@ManjotSingh I work a lot with virtualization (Xen mostly) .. so I'm confined to an 8MB ceiling (combined) for the tools I write.
@ManjotSingh I also work ( side projects for extra money ) on Kiosks and similar things

7:44 AM
Great
I dont have much time to work extra for money.

@TimPost side projects... where can approah for side projects for extra money

@Damodar Honestly, the best way? Blog your adventures solving interesting problems, side jobs will find you.

@TimPost ohhh okey.....

@Damodar If you do something incredibly neat with a beagle board, blog it, make a short video, etc
@Damodar Next you will find people saying "We're making (xyz device) and have this problem .. can you help?"

hmm beagle board, I'm playing with the idea to buy one of those

7:46 AM
@TimPost i almost work on java technologies

@TimPost so how is it related with Kiosks

@OctavianDamiean My only complaint is that it's hard to receive them internationally. I think listing as 'microcontroller' on the package is problematic

heh yea :)
@ManjotSingh well almost 100%

@OctavianDamiean if it said "Computer part" it would sail through.

I worked with microcontrollers :)

7:48 AM
@TimPost do java also have side jobs?

But, we now have a local vendor finally.

I think there is one in Germany so it wouldn't be such a big problem to get one

@Damodar every language does. Even LISP. I got an e-mail from someone last week wanting to develop an entire site using steel bank lisp. Once I stopped laughing and farting, I politely declined.
7

@TimPost :O

@TimPost why you politely declined?

7:50 AM
because it is insane :p

@Damodar Sometimes I get mail from people stuck on something with GNU M4. It usually takes five minutes to sort out, and I get $20.

@TimPost oh for 5min 20$

@OctavianDamiean is correct. It's not just insane, its freaking psychotic.

great

thats great
it means in your currnecy 1000bucks

7:51 AM
@Damodar bucks*

hopefully not bugs :D
especially not that many

bugs lol
rofl

sorry dudes , every time resolving bugs . so habited that

@Damodar If you have data that can only be efficiently sorted using a very expressive language like LISP, the site isn't your problem.

@TimPost what is LISP language. I never heard about that

7:53 AM
@Damodar At that point you need to put on a T shirt that says "Abort, Retry, Fail?" and really think about the problem.

@TimPost ha ha ha

Lisp (or LISP) is a family of computer programming languages with a long history and a distinctive, fully parenthesized syntax. Originally specified in 1958, Lisp is the second-oldest high-level programming language in widespread use today; only Fortran is older (by one year). Like Fortran, Lisp has changed a great deal since its early days, and a number of dialects have existed over its history. Today, the most widely known general-purpose Lisp dialects are Common Lisp, Scheme, and Clojure. Lisp was originally created as a practical mathematical notation for computer programs, influenc...

@Damodar Or, you could try turning it off and on a few hundred times.

@TimPost there are T-Shirts with that caption here

Speaking of captions, my "I (heart) Sed" coffee mug met an unfortunate demise today. Gotta think of something funnier.

7:55 AM
@TimPost :)

grep C8 H10 N4 O2

I'm not knocking LISP or Scheme. I have mixed feelings about M4, but it works well enough once you get used to it. The point is, why dig up a stone age axe when you have so many modern tools at your disposal?

@TimPost i heard , payments some times will not reach us

@Damodar Just use an escrow service.

m4 is a general purpose macro processor designed by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie. m4 is an extension of an earlier macro processor m3, written by Ritchie for the AP-3 minicomputer. Use All UNIXes make the m4 macro processor available, and POSIX has standardized it. Most users requires m4 simply as a dependancy of GNU autoconf, used by "configure" scripts, although the language can, and is, used stand-alone. A macro processor (or a preprocessor) operates as a text-replacement tool. End-users often employ it to re-use text templates, typically in programming applications, but also...

7:57 AM
@OctavianDamiean its the unix command rite
@TimPost what is that escrow service

yes, in that case I'm grepping for the caffeine formula ;)

@OctavianDamiean you are greping chemistry formula

@Damodar You mean "right" , which is synonymous with correct. "rite" indicates some kind of ceremony in a religion.
Gotta love English :)

@TimPost oh sorry dude, iam hardly avoiding short forms, some times missing

it was meant as some kind joke. Something @TimPost can put on his next mug :p

8:00 AM
@Damodar Escrow is where your client has agreed to a price and deposited the funds in an account where he or she can't withdraw

@TimPost oh that cool for transcations

@Damodar When you complete the project, the client releases the escrow. If there is a dispute, an arbitrator is involved.

@TimPost ok.. this could help us from fake clients

@Damodar This gives you the security of knowing that the person has the money to actually pay you. However, beware of unreasonable clients.
@Damodar most freelance sites provide an escrow service.

@TimPost sure, but how can we identify them?

8:03 AM
@Damodar That's a bit of an art. The first clue is a serious heightened sense of urgency. For instance, "I NEED THIS DONE IN TWELVE HOURS!"

@TimPost ya before i used to use one site , oDesk

@Damodar The second clue is a client who obviously can't do it themselves, but seems to be sure regarding how long it should take.

@TimPost ok

@Damodar E.g. "This should take no more than 2 1/2 hours to complete"
Avoid those people like the plague.

@TimPost ok

8:05 AM
@Damodar The next is the "If you do this for me in this time, I'll give you TONS of work" .. never happens.

@TimPost ya they showing us ICE Cream with such offers, i will not believe those. I feel he is unkown before he provide work to me , i feel same even if he give me some work ... long back before my marriage i registered to oDesk its a freelancer site

When dealing with freelance work, get a clear scope, solidify it, specify in your bid how much changes to the scope will cost per hour and stick strictly to your agreement.
Your client is almost never your friend, in fact, you should not be working for friends, that's a great way to lose them.

but i never get any oppertunity fo work, had twice interview with clients thats it.. after i got married , i left that, as there is no time to work on side business.
@TimPost you are right, if we feel as friends, then we need to compromise

@Damodar The trick is to be very selective. Only accept work from people who understand your schedule. After a year, you have about 10 people feeding you jobs consistently, which usually take a few hours or less.
I still have a client who subscribed to my BBS in the early 90's.

@TimPost ok i will keep in mind all your suggestion, those are very valuable to people who are interested to work as part time at home
thats great
@TimPost also do you know about bloging dude, can we earn money by blogging

8:15 AM
Can I ask a 10k'er to get a screenshot of a deleted question? I posted some comments on it yesterday evening and I'm fairly sure it's been deleted. Was on M.SO asking why a user had been banned...unless it turned into a commentwar, then don't worry.

@tombull89 what particularly you are asking?

Members with 10k rep and mods can see deleted questions. I was asking for a screenshot to see any comments made after mine.

@tombull89 the OP deleted it 15 minutes after asking -- no real activity except for the few comments

@balpha what is ment by OP?

Q: Stack Overflow Glossary - Dictionary of Commonly-Used Terms

Adam DavisWhat are the common phrases, words, abbreviations that are used on Stack Overflow, Server Fault, Super User, and Meta Stack Overflow? This is meant to be a very quick overview, not an in-depth tutorial. When considering whether a term ought to be included, please use this test: New user com...

@balpha thanks, that'll do.

@balpha i saw here , many saying OP very often, for day atleast 5 to 6 timesd

yeah, it's a pretty common acronym (and it predates Stack Overflow; I'm pretty sure it's from way back in the usenet day)

now you know what they meant ;)

How to develop Blackberry app on mac without having real device ?

didn't we go through this already?

ya
there should some jack to develop BB app on mac without having a real device

with the outcome that your boss either lets you run a windows VM instance or provides you with a real device

I mean I need simulator of BB on mac
He is not allowing me to run window VM on mac and not providing me a real device
There must be some simulator for mac I think so

8:41 AM
then he won't get his application done anytime soon and lose a customer

Q: iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry emulator for Windows

metal gear solidIs there any iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry emulator for Windows? Freeware.

if the official BB site states that there is no simulator for Mac then there is none

He put a burden on my shoulder

@ManjotSingh yea but who is going to lose the customer, is it you or him?
its him.

but for survival I have to bring some solution for it
I have made app for iPhone and Android
left with Blackberry so I am finding some solution
I followed this link but failed to have simulator

8:46 AM
hmm, orphaned answers bug - didn't expect that.

yes i have seen this

of course there is a solution. Start developing an emulator for Mac.

lol
is it possible to make an emulator of BB on mac without authentication of the Blackberry

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.

8:48 AM
you understand what I am asking or not

40 secs ago, by Octavian Damiean
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking.
that means no

BlackBerry Torch 9800 is available in India at the cost of BlackBerry Torch 9800 Price in India: - Rs. 35,000/-(Indian Rupees) INR.
can't we run emulator virtually

I'm still all puzzled.
How would you run an emulator otherwise?

that only I am thinking
I dont think that is possible

Can we develop BB app on Curve having 5.0 OS on Mac

32 mins ago, by Octavian Damiean
if the official BB site states that there is no simulator for Mac then there is none

@Sathya Curve is a real device not a simulator

I don't see how the OS is relevant then.

this is the Blackberry Curve
My boss saying he can provide me this phone

9:17 AM
so, use your normal dev tools and deploy it on the phone.

It is not showing in my dev tool(eclipse beta version)
I am wondering if it is possible then i can start with BB development

doesn't look like your device is supported us.blackberry.com//developers/javaappdev/macdebug.jsp
I'm not an expert though

My boss is ready to provide me BB Curve having OS 5.0
is it possible to upgrade OS 5.0 to 6.0

no idea

Torch 9800,Style 9670,Bold 9780,Generic
these are the device but the issue is with OS also

9:25 AM
@ManjotSingh I think you're best contacting BlackBerry Support asking about dev kits, they will be a bigger help. This is, after all, a Meta.StackOverflow room, rather than a StackOverflow one.

> This initial beta focuses on Java® development for BlackBerry® 6 with tethered device debugging.
I think version 5 is out of discussion

I'll search again may get something

nods tombull is absolutely right

@tombull89 I'll try that then

2 hours later…

Jeff is having fun :p

what does it mean?

it's the regexes that remove the salutations from the posts

"hola"...really?

"howdy"

@tombull89 that was in one of the comments mentioned

A: Should 'Hi', 'thanks' and taglines and salutations be removed from posts?

Jeff AtwoodWe now automatically remove salutations from posts as they are entered. I got really tired of performing this edit over and over, so anything matching the form of … ^ # begins at start of body \s* # possible spaces ( hi(?![a-z])| # any of these greeting words he...

well I'm glad he did that after I hit 2k on SO :p
@SankarGanesh you don't have c:\program files in Ubuntu.
but, to answer - check for terminal from the first menu

@Sathya that's why i m asking how to run this command in Ubanutu what to type in terminal window

but, to answer - check for terminal from the first menu

@Sathya i know i have to use terminal but wha to do to exceute keytool

12:38 PM
@SankarGanesh just type in the command.

keytool -list -alias santest -keystore "/path/to/keystore"

@LoïcWolff ok no need to set where is keytool , am i right

what @LoïcWolff just typed.
if it's in the path, it'll run

@LoïcWolff cool typing mistake,lol

Can we install Ubuntu on Mac OS X

Yes.

Do you mean dual boot with OSX or on a Mac?

how?
I mean at a time Can we run both ?

12:47 PM
...
dual boot means when you start your computer up you have the choice of two operating systems, in this case Ubuntu and Mac OS X.
not at the same time, no. It requires a reboot.

VMware will help for this ?

At the same time, you would have to run Ubuntu on a virtual machine
yes, VMware Fusion for example

Or VirtualBox.

or Virtual Box if you're looking for a free solution

they all are trial version I want full freeware version
what in case I want to run window also

12:50 PM
VirtualBox is free.

can it be possible to run three OS at a time?

using virtual machine, yes.

how?

well, go to virtual box website, install virtual box for mac, mount ubuntu iso and install like any other OS

A virtual machine is, in very basic terms, an OS Emulator.

12:53 PM
pretty straightforward, everything is well explained and graphical
no dark magic command lines

Between SuperUser and VirtualBox forums it's fairly quick to get running.

ok
means is it legal to use VirtualBox

yes

yes, VirtualBox is freeware.

ok
where do I get Ubuntu OS cd?
either I have to buy or will it be free?

12:57 PM
it's free

okk
