@Desire fixed
@Desire we can set an arbitrary amount in between those. There's rarely a situation where its needed, and going to a month and year is actually pretty rare
and usually if someone escalates that far, we don't really want them.
Also, don't forget the 10 year suspension, on special request.

Hello everyone, if I am unsure if my question was a good fit for the SE site it was asked in (also a higher rep user commented that it's a better fit for another SE site), what should I do ? Should I re-ask my question in the SE site the high rep user recommended or flag my question for a mod to help me decide ? If so, what do I flag for ?

user315433
It's complicated. The higher rep user could be wrong, too.

user315433
If you read the /tour pages of both sites, and find the other is indeed better, and nobody answered your question on site 1 yet, then delete it and post on site 2.

Hmm, I think my question is better suited for site 1, though.

user315433
Then keep it there. One comment doesn't mean you have to go elsewhere.

Q: What did Karl Marx mean by "the movement of this antithesis"?

HsMjstyMstdnIn a lecture about ancient and modern cities, a quote came up on the slides from Karl Marx's Capital where he writes "The foundation of every division of labor that is well developed, and brought about by the exchange of commodities, is the separation between town and country. It may be said ...

12:43 AM
This is how I read it, at least.

user202362
@HsMjstyMstdn My personal thought is, town represents manufacturing and it's where a lot exchanges taking place. Country represents farming. The movement of antithesis symbolizes the urbanization of civilizations as economy progresses.

@HsMjstyMstdn my mindset here is if he has enough reputation to vote to put on hold or migrate, and feels enough to do so, it matters
He hasn't

@ShadowWizard No, but iirc you can't alias 2 columns exactly the same
but maybe...
I'll try that

@ShadowWizard Yeah I saw
nice

But keep in mind it's terribly inefficient, if you have lots of records it will crash the query.

7:27 AM
@Magisch alternatively you can use 'site://users/' + cast(users.id as nvarchar) + '|'+ users.displayname as [handcrafted user link] if you need a magic link but want to have different columnname. This method also tends to be more friendly for the query engine but you need to join with the users table yourself.

@rene I'm already INNER JOIN ' ing the users table twice so np there

awesome

well twice and then twice again in the subquery

@ShadowWizard I don't have such situation. I've the freedom to choose whatever plugin or script as I wish. All they want is result. If I can improve it more than the UX team designed, they will accept it
Wtf

@redhand not talking about plugin or script. Talking about over-doing a feature (e.g. client asked for a simple table, I put a table with paging and sorting) and the boss reject this since it will be more complicated to maintain and might cause the client to ask for more.

John Snow (15 March 1813 – 16 June 1858) was an English physician and a leader in the adoption of anaesthesia and medical hygiene. He is considered one of the fathers of modern epidemiology, in part because of his work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in Soho, London, in 1854. His findings inspired fundamental changes in the water and waste systems of London, which led to similar changes in other cities, and a significant improvement in general public health around the world. == Early life and education == Snow was born on 15 March 1813 in York, England, the first of nine children born...

The Boy Who Cried Wolf is one of Aesop's Fables, numbered 210 in the Perry Index. From it is derived the English idiom "to cry wolf", defined as "to give a false alarm" in Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable and glossed by the Oxford English Dictionary as meaning to make false claims, with the result that subsequent true claims are disbelieved. == The fable == The tale concerns a shepherd boy who repeatedly tricks nearby villagers into thinking wolves are attacking his flock. When a wolf actually does appear and the boy again calls for help, the villagers believe that it is another false alarm...

Q: Singular of "dice"

David MulderAfter a discussion on the topic I found out that the oxford dictionary describes that Historically, dice is the plural of die, but in modern standard English dice is both the singular and the plural: 'throw the dice' could mean a reference to either one or more than one dice. and dice. ...

A: Singular of "dice"

chapkaI have never heard of "dice" being used as a singular instead of die. As a collective noun which could include one, sure: Go on and roll the dice. How many dice do I roll? Just one. But as a straight, unambiguous singular? Roll one dice or even worse Roll a dice sounds off to me...

Never used "die" for singular form or dice and don't think I ever will.
Just sounds wrong.

Shog only responds when he pleases :p

@Magisch more or less ;p

@Shog is Spam Ram "brutally simple" as @Journeyman claims? Or too complicated to allow messing around with it, as I claim? :)

@ShadowWizard in a sense, smokey compliments spamram rather than replaces it.

12:45 PM
I think it's a feedback loop

@JourneymanGeek reminds me of a sad sentence a dev once said, something like "Community User is only a record in the database"

there's no real point, if either of us is right, to actually duct tape the two together

we make sure spam gets flag deleted quick and spamram just ip blocks anything that is

@ShadowWizard arn't we all?

@JourneymanGeek I'm more than one record!

smokey's continued existance hinges on charcoal's

@ShadowWizard I'm actually semi convinced its a few super loud ones

@Magisch yup but they're the core of SE...
@JourneymanGeek loud what? Lost context...

user315433
@Magisch If people stop caring, SE will still have its salary calculator, so at least there's that.

12:50 PM
@ShadowWizard Idealisticly maybe. I'm willing to bet the 99,99% bring in most of the revenue.

I'm convinced the loudest and worst of the complaints is from a handful of users ;p

I must say the salary calculator is pretty useless for me
It doesn't account for the +/- 60% discrepancy between rural / city
I could be making 3 times what I do now in berlin and would be worse off

@Magisch but without the core 0.01%, those 99.99% will become less and less over time, since no new answers will be posted.

@ShadowWizard Sure, but keeping the balance between revenue and keeping the core users coming is a balance
So if you can increase revenue while not sufficiently pissing off people that they'll leave that's a win
In other words you being annoyed means nothing if you keep coming

Guess only time will tell... :)

Q: Psiphon source code

Bogo nameSince the psiphon is an open-source, is there any site that has a source code of psiphon? Because I want to compile it with android studio. Thanks for those who'll answer.

don't have any other choice

12:55 PM
@Magisch it's more than that... I don't like changes but usually getting used to changes. I got used to the envelope being removed and replaced with something less functional. I got used to the new-old top bar. I got used to the SO new top bar. But not that hybrid top bar they now have for the rest of the network. It's just... not that. It's not good.
It's like sitting on uncomfortable chair and not being able to replace it.
So at some point, back will start to ache.

@ShadowWizard oddly my current (and only) big issue with the new top bar is the mystery meat navigation and the new achievements icon

@JourneymanGeek meat navigation?

As for icons, still no idea which is what. I just click randomly. lol

12:58 PM
But that's not the big issue, just part of the one issue: top bar is now bad and unusable.

you can hover over them for tooltops tho

@JourneymanGeek so "meat navigation" is standard term for such icons??? lol never heard that.
I mean... why?!

@ShadowWizard mystery meat navigation

They move cheese and we click meat

hehe
Mystery meat navigation (also known as MMN) is a disparaging term coined in 1998 by Vincent Flanders, author and designer of the website Web Pages That Suck, to describe a web page where the destination of the link is not visible until the user points their cursor at it. Such interfaces lack a user-centered design, emphasizing aesthetic appearance, white space, and the concealment of relevant information over basic practicality and functionality. The epithet "mystery meat" refers to the meat products often served in American public school cafeterias whose forms have been so thoroughly reprocessed...
