My bias against new users is very much conscious: I filter out their questions.

seriously though, I am more concerned with tech progress than any other issues at the moment - only the dumbest animals would create weapon that could wipe the whole specie out before devicing a way of escaping

Here's a quandry
Is serial downvoting the responsibility of the downvotee to deal with or is it like serial upvoting as in that it's a "flag it when you see it" kind of situation

@Magisch ideally the former for both.

@Desire also, judging from the comments and upvotes storm, I'm not the first to think this is bad UX, so wonder why I'm the first to complain? There are many other long time members there who aren't exactly shy.
@Desire think it's according to privacy settings, i.e. public content won't be hidden. Or would it?

@ShadowWizard most people who would know where to complain are experienced users and they wouldn't see that

most people who will see that are anonymous users who know nothing about Meta

12:14 PM
da

nyet?

@JourneymanGeek more than one comment mentioned users who log in daily.

@ShadowWizard on the other hand, they wouldn't look or bother most of the time

@Mithrandir bah, reminds me of army service. Think 90% of the words I heard were this word. lol :D
(the rest were curse words in Russian ;))

Russian is the Hokkien of the IDF? ;p

12:17 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol no, just happened to serve with many who came from Russia, so spoke Russian among themselves. Nothing official. :)

@ShadowWizard hokkien's the language most cuss words is in ;p

(and they mainly ranted how hard the service is)
@JourneymanGeek lol

Malay's the language ceremonial commands are given in. English is the langage of business.

user315433
It's complicated. I think that trying to look at "too many" LinkedIn profiles while being logged out results in them hiding everything on the page behind login banner. Going to the same profile from a different IP shows its public part.

12:18 PM
@ShadowWizard yeah, there are a lot of Russians here

Worse than SO then... hate such tricks
@Mithrandir yup

TBH, I think its just one of those things they'll look at once they're aware of it

user315433
Facebook used to have super-obnoxious login banner fixed in the middle of page, but now it appears to be much smaller and is not fixed anymore.

@SmokeDetector "Twitter" was my first thought when reading the title.

I just googled "stack overflow login/mainpage ugly", but nothing appear. At least there wasn't anyone who complained about this outside SE/SO...
(surprisingly? shockingly?)
or I just failed in searching ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean with that?
Also not flag serial upvoting?

Cause it's pretty hard to spot from public data imo

magisch has a pretty good way ;)

:p let's have that conversation (again?) :p

12:33 PM
re meta.stackexchange.com/questions/302151/…, I think I'll raise a CM ticket

@JourneymanGeek You think I'm shooting blind mostly, eh :p

@Magisch and that the benefit is not that great on the longer term

wtf? Tiangong is heading towards earth. Scientists says that about 100KG of particles will hit earth. abc.net.au/news/2017-10-16/…

@JourneymanGeek Do you think letting serial voting slip isn't that important?

Now, even if your system works, there's some information we can see (and even more that the CM team can see) so if its really effective, its really got to be tied into the existing tooling.
Also, even if we found it, we'd still need a CM to, well, do the needful.

12:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek Problem with that is that I'm a) not a moderator and b) not an employee

@Magisch yup.

and neither of those has a shot of changing anytime soon

as a mod, with vague voting trends, its relatively hard
Some other mods are really good at it, granted...

I'm pretty sure that @JNat is of the opinion that @Magisch's query is fairly accurate and is sick of dealing with them :P
also, JNat is apparently offering everyone a diamond

@Mithrandir see "in which case, it needs to be integrated into the system they're using now"

user315433
@Magisch Those are fake internet points. Doesn't matter if they are fake fake internet points.

@Magisch not really sure if he is what?

I can't actually accurately find out what of my flags is actual true positive and what is false positive but the mods won't decline it because it's a good-faith flag
@JourneymanGeek If anyone is of the opinion that what I'm doing is particularly helpful

@Magisch and vote invalidations are probably the most complicated thing for us

So I have to rely on that nobody has told me to cut it yet

12:47 PM
@Success it is more probable that the forgotten one will just jump down from that spacestation instead of waiting a rocket that will never be....

@JourneymanGeek You know, I was gonna ask on SU meta if I should do it there as well
But cody made a good case for keeping serial voting stuff out of meta as much as possible

@Magisch Its worth remembering I'm hugely skeptical of a lot of the unofficial botty stuff....

@JourneymanGeek What I'm doing is not a bot
It's me running a data.SE query once a week and then sifting through the results. By hand.

@Magisch or any other magical unofficial queries ;p

Point is
I obviously still need to consult the SU moderators beforehand

12:49 PM
(point here is I'm grumpy and skeptical and oldschool)

How do I do this without meta

Another mod might like this better, and I'd just let them handle it.
there's a SU mod chatroom for general use
and I can leave a "guys look at this" message somewhere they can find it

Was there any occurence where serial upvoting was really dangerous (as in abusing privilege), or they just want their imaginary point only..?

I'll hit the chatroom then
And wait a couple of days to give everyone a chance to chime in
@Success People use it to get out of post bans, to be able to post comments, to apply for jobs and use their rep as some form of qualification, some universities have assignments to get a certain amount of rep

I'll say this: I've spent a large chunk of my day looking at one of your three flags.

12:52 PM

 Ask a Super User Moderator

For moderation, spam, troublesome users and related issues you...
@Mithrandir the large chunk of the day bit...

I tend to have that effect on people
I try to help but end up costing a bunch of people a lot of time instead often times

@JourneymanGeek because it's not one user upvoting another user in this case, it's the case of the tag voting
which I'm currently assembling proof for in the Lit mod room so you can't see :p

@Mithrandir just curious, how many upvotes in the tag? was it done in only 1 day?

@Success I'm not done looking yet, but at least 20 votes in 2 minutes

I could think of badge hunting (daily vote), but probably that's not the case

12:59 PM
@JourneymanGeek I posted in the room you linked
feel free to add anything if you want

@Magisch I've left a message basically saying "I'm skeptical, but if someone wants to take a look and feed back, go ahead"

Eventually I want to expand this to all the big SE sites
I'll have to adjust the sensitivity on the query to the site traffic though since I'm using a real hacky way to bypass the absence of timestamps on votes

1:13 PM
whew It took me half an hour just to assemble all of that into one place
(that=proof that this one user voted for the tag)

Suspensions usually progress 1 week -> 1 month -> 1 year. I thought a while back that "1 quarter" was missing in between. Maybe it was added as a standard option? Here is a 1-quarter suspension.

I was wondering where I encountered that user before but then I found the meta post.
I guess special users deserve special treatment?
I would say Shog9 is mild ...

7:38 PM
@Desire Mods can override the time however they like. I've given people single day suspensions to cool off... If I want to give a 42 day suspension or an 90 day that's my call... The system defaults to those numbers but you don't have to go with them. Remember, though... we usually give warnings in addition, so it's generally not going to be just three events that get you a one-year ban.

user315433

@Desire Huh, when I read that, I thought they were complaining that the moderator was removed from the site.

Writing proper English sentences is not everyone's first nature ....
I may hope that has a laughable mistake ...
