Speaking of Bollywood stars, one of our tenants look like a Bollywood star - he must be a good catch in India - being hot & working in IT for an tech giant. But then again for some reasons, we tend to end up with more than our fair share of handsome tenants. There was this carpenter years ago & according to a few people, he was exceptionally hot. And then there is this guy working in a school & another ex-tenant, when I took fiji air flight, some stewards look like older version of him ...

user202362
But they are/were all in married/in stable relationships. Probably because all of our properties are 3 bedroom/2 bedroom + study houses/villas, and people who choose those kind of properties tend to be families. Working parents with kids are likely to be the good tenants.

12:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think in this case he could have used up his votes for different persons :-)

In the unlikely event of WWIII, I will get a boat and camp out on Albatross Island ... imagine surrounding yourself with those cute, fluffy birdies a few months out of a year ...

Yay, however in the case of WWⅢ, it may be more than a few months out of a year you'll be stuck there.

1:32 AM
@peterh could. Didn't.

user202362
1:55 AM
@bjb568 that's the whole point - if it's safe enough for baby birds, it should be safe enough for me ... fluffy albatross chicks are just bonus ...

A: What precautions should I take when hiking among herds of elk?

BarbaraI have Elk where I live. I have been riding my bike to work early in the morning. I have wondered what I should do if I come across one while riding. Suggestions please.

user315433
Ride the elk instead?

user202362
I saw elk & I call them deer, I spotted albatross and I thought they were seagulls. I must admit my profound ignorance ...

Area 51 now has sites with "3k days in beta"

user315433
However it's rounded to nearest integer, not rounded down as SE tends to do with time intervals elsewhere. Those sites went over 2500 days in beta recently.

user315433
In a few days, Board & Card Games will become the first site to spend 7 years in beta stage.

also ... what's with the increasing amount of socks?

@Telkitty Well, it's getting colder in the northern hemisphere, so I'm guessing people are pulling them out of storage to keep their feet warm.

Increasing numbers?
I assume she means sock puppets ;p

user202362
you are saying people use socks to protect themselves? who would have thought >_<

@Telkitty I had aibobot so I could check things as a low rep user, now I just do bounties so I can check things as a low rep user again sooooon....

anyone here using genuine windows you purchased yourself?

I think the staff is all at some retreat in the wilderness somewhere.
@redhand I... have a Mac with windows in bootcamp... which I haven't used in forever... but I got the download when my husband worked for a company who paid for him to be an MSDN member, so it was free.
Does that count?

Nopes. I am just curious if someone really paying the amount to get a windows genuine copy. I am using win 10, which I got as a free upgrade because of my laptop's manufacturer(microsoft provided free upgrade to windows 10 for selected models from selected makes).
I didn't see a single person around me who buy a windows copy. All of us download it from either TPB or a trial version and then activate it by some other ways

I'm sure my work does... I think most of their users are businesses... plus, you're asking a loaded crowd... lots of MSDN people and people willing to go other ways around to getting it... the average Microsoft user probably paid for it when buying their computer...
Plus, they sort of are getting pushed into giving the OS upgrades for free because Apple does... except that Apple gets money from hardware and Windows mostly doesn't.

user202362
As a rule of thumb - it's easier to make money from other businesses than individual users.

user202362
Business generally buy genuine software because they don't want to get sued

5:36 AM
Windows almost failed in hardware business. Apple have a rule. People need a mac thing to run mac os. but windows doesn't have such a thing

Google doesn't either but they seem to be managing just fine.

user202362
tabacco companies generate billions of dollars of profits by selling cancerogenic products - that's life

Huh? I don't see how that relates to anything we were just talking about.

They are getting some good response on pixel phones.
plus their new ear phone support real time translation only on pixel phones
That's slightly related to what apple doing

user202362
@Catija just another way of saying whether succeeding in hardware business has a lot to do with succeeding as a business

5:44 AM
Sure. Android was problematic because they couldn't force the manufacturers to allow updates to the software... by having their own hardware, they were able to release their software updates to more users, sooner, which I'm guessing caused the users of non-Google phones to complain when they couldn't get OS updates.

user202362
This year, OpenSignal counted more than 24,000 unique Android devices—both smartphones and tablets—on which its app has been installed. That is six times as many as in 2012.Aug 5, 2015

user202362
it's impossible to have 1 update version fit all

Which is likely why they're getting into the hardware game at all.... they want to do what Apple does... only have to support 4-6 versions of the software.

user202362
Personally I am suspicious that pixel will do too well - pixel tries to compete with iphone and high end of samsung, both apple and samsung have way more experience in phone manufacturing than google

user202362
it will be windows phone again

5:51 AM
I think Google has more money to throw at it, though...

user202362
you think google has way more money to throw into smart phone market than microsoft?

user202362
I have an early version of windows phone, it's not too bad

I think Google is willing to allocate more money to it than Windows is.

user202362
Company like microsoft or google will not throw gigantic amount of money into a product that does not generate certain amount of profit. So that means, unless pixel can capture at least 5% of the smart phone market in the next 2 years, it will end up like windows phone ...

user202362
Ask yourself: will myself buy a pixel phone?

5:58 AM
But Google is encouraging it by offering really good prices on cell service. I've never used one of the Pixels but I know people who do really like them.

user202362
trust me, windows did probably even more, such as rolling out new OS version ...

user202362
I also had a windows phone app on their store at one stage

Previously google want other to manufacture phone for them with name Nexus
then it is changed to Android one
Now google released pixel themself
Mi have an android one device with very low cost. around 15K INR
which is around $250
also the Nokia 6 costs the same here
So, the cost for a pixel is high when comparing with such phones
Amazon India have great deals on the diwali festive sales

@redhand both nexus and pixel are made by other companies
however nexus was co-branded, pixel isn't. Nexus was kinda cheaper, while pixel is a full blown flagship.
android ones, yeah, somewhat like nexus, though I think hardware's all done by the partner, and google does the software, and there's no google branding.

8:51 AM
To me, the point of Nexus was to bootstrap really good flagship phones. Likewise with the low and middle end stuff and Android One.

@JourneymanGeek like windows phone, which is made by nokia

And others. Yes.

Do all sites other than Chat and Area 51 now use the new top bar?
meta.stackexchange.com/q/301845/222298 "We released the new top bar for all users across all communities. The only exceptions are stackexchange.com, Area 51, and chat. They will be coming a little later."

@b_jonas yes

Thanks.

@b_jonas more or less. Makes sense - those three are on different codebases.

Can mod read the source (read: the markdown) of someone's about me?
Because I'm using <!-- --> (HTML comment tag) trick to write something on my "about me"
Not rude/abusive, just a reminder to do something on the site

user202362
I find your question tricky ... surely you can get reminded somewhere else

2:16 PM
Moderators can go to preferences pages of users and update them - useful in cases of abusive about me or profile picture. That requires access to the markdown of the about me. There is usually no reason for a moderator to go to a specific users' preferences page, @Success
And as @Telkitty - there are better tools for that.

@Oded thanks ;)

goes and looks at the markdown of Success's preference page

user202362
if I only knew where the preference page was ...

??? on your profile page, settings tab, left hand menu item that is called... preferences?

2:42 PM
@Oded Animuson once sent me a mod message that he changed something from my about me section. I wondered how he changed but later I came to know that mod's have access to it
@JourneymanGeek Yes. For A One phones, Google provide the software and they provide confirmed upgrade to 2 or 3 new releases. Which most of the other phones failed to promise

3:04 PM
@b_jonas why do you ask? Noticed any bug?

@ShadowWizard that's.... pretty bad
@Success woof?
@redhand as a mod, with great power comes great responsibility ;p

@ShadowWizard I really feel you're playing a cheap trick to get Santa to give you a bigger monitor ;)

@JourneymanGeek yeah consider yourself lucky for not needing SO as a visitor....

@Success we totally have better things to do.
@ShadowWizard I'm mostly elsewhere anyway

@JourneymanGeek yeah, here! :D

3:12 PM
@ShadowWizard lol. Currently SU and MSE's my main sites, yeah

@rene but Santa still got over two months until arrival... way too soon..

I keep an eye on pets (via their in chat bot) and cooking sometimes too

If anything, it's a trick to get a Visitor Hat preview.

:D

@JourneymanGeek keep an eye over a site via chat bot? Meaning looking for spam?

3:14 PM
@ShadowWizard actual posts
;p

How you do that using a chat bot?

@ShadowWizard It looks really business-oriented now, with "SO Business Solutions" link just below the signup form, and SO Jobs ad just below "Ask question" button

I have MSE, SF and SU opened in tabs too

@Success yup, SO became a business, not Q&A site.
Business first, business second, Q&A somewhere below. Minor.
Lucky for SO, there is no alternative yet.

@ShadowWizard message feeds and rss I think
not a chat bot chat bot

3:16 PM
lol

But there's always this to bypass those... "interesting" design

small joys, seeing Peter Mortensen edit something in a question you answered (and its not you).
;p
(mark works for SE these days, one of their SRE folks)

3:51 PM
@JourneymanGeek He's not a mod

I tend to equate SE staffs as mods because they can do everything what a mod can...
Or.... I actually don't know who are you referring to in your last comment

They can do more than what a mod can do
They can create new mods and remove existing ones too
is it a brother of unicorn?

@ShadowWizard This was going on for a while, but the trend intensified since Joe Quora became a PM.

@ShadowWizard Nope, no bug.

@redhand One was manually reported on Charcoal and then Smokey reported again.

@Desire Quora has minimalistic view, no such huge banners, actually on login banner at all, just the expected login button. Wish SO will be the same.

Hm indeed. Search results from Quora do look better.

Well. Not to say that account acquisition for Jobs is the only thing driving the SO interface, but it apparently is more powerful than anything else.

Facebook and LinkedIn hide much of the content from anonymous users, but perhaps for social networks this is expected.
