I think you're confusing it with Elon Musk's new product

@JourneymanGeek no. I can give you the link. may be later. TL is watching me. can't youtube now

also, the backside is more expensive to fix than the front.

@JourneymanGeek but it is scratch resistant. I think it can prevent accidental damages too.

tfw you have a stored procedure with a cursor within a cursor within 2 parallel cursors within a cursor within a cursor

ChrisF

Oded's nightmare

He'll suspend you, just for that reason alone ...

The only cursor I know is..... whoops it won't appear in screenshot

@rene to be fair it did cut the 3000 some line stored procedure down to 970 lines
and it also runs three times as fast now
I refactored it today

9:22 AM
@Magisch nice!

@rene Before it used the select count then iterate through every row using ROWNUM() select queries in a while loop method
There are still a couple dozen SPs in this company written by my coworkers that I'll have to refactor this way
Also using insensitive cursors is very nice when you're working with views as data basis that change depending on what you do in the SP

@Magisch oh boy ... but ... It Worked™

3. ChrisF
4. ?

@rene next up: the query that creates dummy orders from formal offers in the DB. That's 8000+ lines of TSQL goodness :D

Ouch

9:30 AM

@Oded This cursor is 5 deep
This is like a 4 times nested version of that meme

Nested cursors are the best way to melt the DB CPU :P

@Oded And abusing ROWNUM() to emulate cursors doesn't?

And I hear ya. I've seen systems where stored procedures called other stored procedures (some 7k lines long). Systems where the code called the DB in order to find out how to call other parts of the DB.
ROWNUM and other windowing functions are better. The engine is better optimized for them, usually.

mhm
the SP I rewrote runs in 1/3 of what it used to
not sure if that's due to cursors or other refactoring, tbh

9:36 AM
I once worked on a system that we had to migrate from Oracle to SqlServer. The oracle packages were unmaintainable already and the so called super handy migration tool did its job the resulting SP was so big, SqlServer refused to compile it. Also because it left 20% of the Oracle code in it because the tool didn't know how to handle those statements.

lol

@Oded Real talk though, if I'm forced into using iterative loops in SPs, would you recommend rownum trickery or cursors?
I know this is a plague or smallpox question but still :p

Better go with rownum - you are giving the optimizer a fighting chance that way.

I understand that making subqueries is better then using loops at all, isn't it?
Like if you're doing a INSERT INTO with select as values it's better then to make a loop and issue single-file inserts

Basically, yes. Again - because the optimizer can actually act on them - it has statistics and other data.
Using temp tables helps.

10:08 AM
It should be reversed
& it'll be. in near future

10:19 AM
Should we show Meta what we are capable of?

@Derpy people have already started.

@JourneymanGeek It's not started today or yesterday. It's started years before

It started in september ;p

@Derpy for SO, all 365 days are stupid question day. (366 in leap years as well)
@JourneymanGeek which year?

@redhand almost the right question.
Eternal September or the September that never ended is Usenet slang for a period beginning in September 1993, the month that Internet service provider America Online began offering Usenet access to its many users, overwhelming the existing culture for online forums. The influx in Usenet users was also indirectly caused by the aggressive direct mailing campaign by AOL Chief Marketing Officer Jan Brandt in order to beat out CompuServe and Prodigy, which most notably involved distributing millions of floppy disks and CD-ROMs with free trials of AOL. Before then, Usenet was largely restricted to colleges...

@Oded why not making a tool for CM's to view stars just like viewing votes?

@redhand we might. In 9 years, I've only heard about something like this two-three times. Building a tool could be more time consuming that simply dealing with the occurrences as and when they happen.
When one has a list of things to do that's as long as their arm, one has to prioritise.

@TheLittleNaruto stars have been handled

By now you’ve probably heard about Stack Overflow’s commitment to making remote work, well… work. If not, you can read about it here, here, and a whole page of links here. Seriously, we care about it a LOT. At Stack Overflow we want to hire the best person for the job, even if that person is in Salt Lake City, Utah; Berlin, Germany; or Sao Paolo, Brazil. Promoting remote work promotes diversity, and we are committed to improving both.

However, this isn’t going to be another article about why we believe in remote work. I’m here to tell you about how we pull the whol …

so... the stack bot. Noticed that the link on the blog page now works, but it just point to the github page. So no online "just try a question" version, would have to download the code and set up all the environment / service keys / etc just to see if it is worth.
Will have to wait for a little then

@bluefeet Would you please read my last message ? ^^

I read it
The only way to prevent them is by suspending them from chat

And is it doable for you ? Because you wont be telling the name anyway. 😀

I'm not planning on suspending anyone for that, at this point.

If they keep it up, however... I am sure more steps will be taken.

But he has been doing it for like 2-3 weeks
That's what made me come here.

Well, it sounds like that script is using Object.create. IE8 doesn't support Object.create. Depending on how the site is using it, you might be able to polyfill enough of it: developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/… But really, it's time to let IE8 die (global market share: 1.11%). Let the problem exist, and perhaps those with IE8 will upgrade. — T.J. Crowder 2 mins ago

Yeah, I've also annotated them so we have record in the future
@TheLittleNaruto and if it happens again flag for a mod to investigate. That's what they are there for

Alright.
I'll custom flag or will visit this chat.
Thank you for your time.

@TheLittleNaruto which site you're talking about?

@redhand SO

That's the best way to track this stuff.
You have to notify the mods when things get out of hand, then they can step in and deal with it

2:39 PM
@TheLittleNaruto ah ok then. There are plenty of SO mods roaming here

It's not like I am complaining for the first time. For the record, check this transcript:

@TheLittleNaruto and as far as I know... no >_>

again chat search seems like broken

@JourneymanGeek I am not sure what are you reply to ? 😛

@TheLittleNaruto the line above what I said ;p

2:42 PM
haha

@TheLittleNaruto complaining is very different from flagging for moderator attention. If you're having issues in a chatroom, you're best bet is to flag for a moderator to step in

@bluefeet I had flagged today as well but no mod appeared. So had to come here.

@bluefeet though, I don't actually recall any tools for sorting that out - the usual advice I give is to ignore it, since folks do it for attention

I'll flag next time as well.

There used to be a way to check (some witchcraft involving websockets) but that was fixed.

2:45 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well ignoring is not best solution imho
starred messages are something you would read for important stuffs

@TheLittleNaruto there's no real way for a mod to check who starred something

RO can undo the star, no?

eh, yeah, or a mod

Naruto (ナルト) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. It tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who searches for recognition and dreams of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village. The story is in two parts, the first set in Naruto's pre-teen years, and the second in his teens. The series is based on two one-shot manga by Kishimoto: Karakuri (1995), which earned Kishimoto an honorable mention in Shueisha's monthly Hop Step Award the following year, and Naruto (1997). Naruto was serialized in Shueisha's magazine, Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1999...

@rene - Hey, as a room owner of the Shadow's Den, I thought I'd let you know that we're keeping an active eye out for Hans, et al. there. Let me provide some context to this:
in Shadow's Den, 4 hours ago, by Hans1984
this guy needs to lose his job as a mod

3:58 PM
@BradLarson yeah, I was watching that while it unfolded

@TheLittleNaruto FYI, Brad larson is here and he handled many of my custom flags.

In response to a series of flags in chat, I found that Hans had a lengthy history of posting racial and homophobic slurs, many of which had been hidden from us.

@BradLarson I didn't step in as I thought it criticized you in your role as mod, not as in you as person which would be off-limits for me.

@redhand Nice. He is doing same for our chatroom.

4:00 PM
The stuff he posted was horrifying, and frankly had I been the one to act on his account he would not even have one on SO right now. In my opinion, he is no longer welcome to participate on these sites.

same goes with insane cat?
is he angry with Blue feet?

in Shadow's Den, 3 hours ago, by TheLittleNaruto
Well he is there to help us from a user who is abusing starring messages randomly..

@BradLarson ah, I don't have that context. Do I need to step up moderation in the Den? That room is basically un-moderated by design.

He then immediately created a sock puppet to evade his chat suspension, which was promptly removed. He knows exactly what he was doing, and we also know that other people were covering for him. Thus the warning I issued to their chatroom on SO.

@redhand i think i need to clear that he is bad in english he meant bluefeet was silent and not the meaning the words seem to say

4:01 PM
@ShaWizDowArd if you're around, please read back above transcript

@Sha never visited tavern today

@BradLarson yeah, I made that connection, that is why I kept an eye on the Den and left a message when I saw enough

should I take my popcorn?

@BradLarson this is something I have discussed with @JonClements as well in the context of SOCVR: I find it hard to correctly judge when to switch to actual moderating as opposed to watch a conversation skim the lines of what is acceptable and what not.

@BradLarson slightly related
in Shadow's Den, 5 hours ago, by Hans1984
rekire probably happy he doesnt have to remove 100 cat gifs a day now
@rene FMPOV Den is a free place. Except rarest cases, there is no need to moderate it

@rene I know that moderators are human punching bags, and that people should be able to criticize us, but hoo boy is he presenting a skewed narrative there. Thought I'd at least address that and warn that he and those he interacts with have a history of terrible behavior in chat.

@redhand there is no free place on the SE chat network. There are rules to follow

4:11 PM
@rene but there is no such situation in Den

@BradLarson That is true. Few ROs left our chat after his suspension.

@BradLarson there is a bit more offensive stuff in the Den transcript that is removed. Might be something you want a CM to look at.

well I am not regular on SO chat
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@redhand let me beg to differ
There is meta.stackexchange.com/questions/270587/… and meta.stackexchange.com/questions/271267/… and be nice carries over to chat. Calling any chatroom a free place is just nonsense.
The Den is moderated to the least extent possible but that assumes above guidance is respected by its visitors/regulars.

@rene - Shadow is unlikely to be around today and tomorrow. It is the day of atonement (staring this night till tomorrow night).

4:19 PM
Ah, that is unfortunate
The pinned message in the Den should be enough of a warning and maybe I need to prepare to use those shiny RO tools when needed ...

To be clear - if I or any other employee find things in any room that go against the terms of service, that room will be shut down. There will also be consequences for people posting this problematic content in said room.
4

I would be surprised if you didn't.

Shutting down room is not the solution imho, but kicking such users out is.

Depends on the nature and scope of the issue, @TheLittleNaruto

4:22 PM
if that's taken in consideration, then fine.

@rene btw i havent visited SOCVR in a while how is the room doing ?

@ColdFire I think it goes well for now, the usual troublemakers but nothing we didn't or couldn't handle.

I think my popcorn maker is broken, so.. no popcorn for now :(

aaawwwwww

gives some popcorn to @Elias and @rene

4:24 PM
\o/

@rene ah great glad to hear :)

We've had rooms where the culture was toxic. Certain behaviours and interactions that were prevalent - partially because the people who started the room didn't care so much about them ended up persisting even after multiple kicks and warnings. The only solution in those cases was to simply shut the room down.
I don't believe that the Den is like that or that the room owners would set a blind eye to such shenanigans.

I will say that we almost did shut down the Android Era with Kotlin and Java chatroom on SO after reading back through the transcripts. It wasn't just Hans, but others as well, and the fact that people seemed to be OK with this behavior and even encouraged it. When I found multiple messages with slurs in them that either hadn't been flagged or had the flags dismissed on them by room members, that shows a larger problem than one user.

is @JonEricson around? if so, we've got a couple questions for ya over at hbar

Also, for a chatroom about Android, it had like four posts about Android in it over the span of days.

4:35 PM
@Oded FYI: I moved some (removed) posts from the Den to the sandbox as they contained in the history things that bothered me in some way.

grabs popcorn

@BradLarson It's not like that. It's just counting of slur messages are more than that of Android's.
