user315433
I completely agree; this is really the best thing to do with them.
user315433
This just isn't as easy as one might think at first, especially when tools for quickly ignoring a large number of posts (e.g., by 1-reps) are lacking.
It makes all the difference if the new programmer showed their effort.
Like mathematics, programming is learnt only by doing. If the new user doesn't try things, then no amount of questions on Stack Overflow is going to help them.
We go back to this though:
372
Q: Should Stack Overflow (and Stack Exchange in general) be awarding "A"s for Effort?

Shog9This just came up again: homework is not acceptable if the asker has made no effort whatsoever I'm developing a bit of an involuntary twitch that manifests itself when I encounter the word "effort" on Stack Overflow these days. Don't get me wrong — effort is good. At least, productive eff...

user315433
19:30
I think trying to improve others too much is a problem of its own, and a prominent one on SO.
Also this:
218
A: Improving "demonstrate a minimal understanding" close reason

jmacAnalogy Time A good question-answer pair is like collaborative problem solving. The asker has a big puzzle they are trying to solve, and are stuck on some part of it. A good question will explain what it's trying to achieve as well as the specific problem they are currently facing ...

@hichris123 Shog9 answered that himself though:
> Folks aren't looking for "effort" because they think displays of struggle are some sort of magic pixie dust, able to turn a terrible, useless question into gold. They're looking for effort because the lack thereof is the most blatantly obvious hallmark of the thousands of terrible, terrible questions asked every day on Stack Overflow.
(I thought the puzzle analogy was on the As for effort one though)
user315433
At this stage of SO, a question "how to print a triangle of * in Java" isn't going to become a good one, no matter the amount of effort.
user315433
They don't need to be downvoted, closevoted, or sidevoted. They need to be ignored.
19:32
@zaq It won't do much good for future visitors, but if the asker showed that they tried, I have no problem with it.
So if I post a random piece of sample code that shows I "tried", you're suddenly okay with it?
That makes no sense. Why even care?
Yeah, there are lazy people. Can't ever change that.
@hichris123 No, a random sample is not "trying".
I've seen my share of lazy new users who just posted an empty public static void main block as their "effort", and I'll DV and CV these on the spot.
But my point is "so what?" Is it because you don't want SO to become a haven for lazy people? If so, that seems contrary to SO's main goal -- to give people answers to problems they encounter. Doesn't matter if they tried anything or not. Just matters if it can be answered.
Because the people who do put effort in their questions, see their question drowned in the daily dose of zero-effort questions.
So... you want to reward the people who show effort? Fine, reward them with an upvote and not a downvote.
19:40
I do.
user315433
@S.L.Barth Are you hoping that DVs and CVs will decrease the number of those? Because then you might be also interested in draining some oceans with a bucket...
@zaq True. At best you can discourage it.
The tooltips on the voting buttons are quite clear though. They start with "This question shows research effort" and "This question does not show research effort".
The MSE question got me thinking though - as I said in my comment there, I do think many new programmers lack a structured introduction into programming.
This, however, is based on impressions; I have no data to back it up.
@S.L.Barth maybe we can introduce the term CodeKiddie?
@rene Haha! Well, yes, but maybe we should try something more encouraging first?
Nah, let's stick with this
19:50
"Hasn't-read-the-introductory-text-yet-kiddie" IS a bit long...
I'll make an auto-comment to post on every programming post of an 1-rep user: Code Kiddies not allowed here
@rene Sounds like a good way to get suspended....
Maybe you're right
user315433
I used to have an auto-commenting bot, but it was limited to pointing out problems with formatting, tags, and titles like "please help, I'm stuck".
@S.L.Barth TourKiddie?
19:53
We do get the occassional good question from a new user. I even tweeted one, a few mothns ago.
user315433
Some users proposed to expand it to "no effort" thing, but I wouldn't go there.
@rene Maybe if you always add a link to the Tour with it...
@zaq To be fair, the tooltip also asks if something is useful. For a brand new technology, "How do I do X?" can be a useful question.
In that case, however, the proper thing to do would be to make it a canonical question, and/or Community Wiki.
user315433
Well it was in the context of math, which is a pretty old technology.
user315433
But in any case, I do agree that some no-visible-effort questions are quite useful.
@zaq Ok, but mathematics also has new areas of research.
user315433
19:57
Someone working on the cutting edge of math asks questions in a different way from homework-doers. And besides, there is [mathoverflow.net] for those.
user315433
Hm, no magic link?
user315433
Maybe MathOverflow, yes [mathoverflow.se] works.
Agreed, in Mathematics, it's harder to find an equivalent situation.
I'm still thinking about introductions to programming though.
Most of the time when I see a textbook for new programmers, it is about teaching a programming language. It teaches the language and its idioms, much more than the underlying basics of programming.

user315433
The goal of my job is simple. Sending people I meet that obviously know how to code to Stack Overflow shouldn't create stress and task me.
user315433
22:12
So what's the problem, just say "go to Stack overflow dot com"
user315433
Although it's not clear why they should be "sent" there, like a package.
I assume that was referring to the tendency of users to railroad people who do stuff slightly out of norm with the community.
user315433
22:42
Effort in questions is like Adblock. I used to have Adblock and felt clever thinking how I can visit websites without being annoyed by their ads.
user315433
Then I realized that if I wouldn't go there because of ads, it wasn't worth going anyway. So... it's been a long time since I last used Adblock. Can't afford it, since I'd be paying with time.
user315433
Same with effort. A clear but no-effort question shows up, and a user is annoyed, feeling they are expected to do someone else's work. If effort is shown, they still do someone else's work, but are no longer annoyed; probably even feeling magnanimous about it. An expensive illusion, this effort thing, much as adblocking.
user335633
curiousity questions not welcome on MSE?
user335633
Just to clarify in my question - I was not suggesting a badge, I was just curious why a badge did not exist
@DamienPaul curiosity killed that cat...

user335633

@ShadowWizard especially from near-to-new members?
@DamienPaul seniority on the site is not a factor. I can bet money that if I would post that exact discussion, I will also be downvoted.
user335633
@ShadowWizard I doubt that
user315433
I downvoted it, and I frankly don't care at all who you are.
