I completely agree; this is really the best thing to do with them.

This just isn't as easy as one might think at first, especially when tools for quickly ignoring a large number of posts (e.g., by 1-reps) are lacking.

It makes all the difference if the new programmer showed their effort.

Like mathematics, programming is learnt only by doing. If the new user doesn't try things, then no amount of questions on Stack Overflow is going to help them.

Q: Should Stack Overflow (and Stack Exchange in general) be awarding "A"s for Effort?

I've seen my share of lazy new users who just posted an empty public static void main block as their "effort", and I'll DV and CV these on the spot.

But my point is "so what?" Is it because you don't want SO to become a haven for lazy people? If so, that seems contrary to SO's main goal -- to give people answers to problems they encounter. Doesn't matter if they tried anything or not. Just matters if it can be answered.

Because the people who do put effort in their questions, see their question drowned in the daily dose of zero-effort questions.

So... you want to reward the people who show effort? Fine, reward them with an upvote and not a downvote.

The tooltips on the voting buttons are quite clear though. They start with "This question shows research effort" and "This question does not show research effort".

The MSE question got me thinking though - as I said in my comment there, I do think many new programmers lack a structured introduction into programming.

This, however, is based on impressions; I have no data to back it up.

@zaq To be fair, the tooltip also asks if something is useful. For a brand new technology, "How do I do X?" can be a useful question.

Most of the time when I see a textbook for new programmers, it is about teaching a programming language. It teaches the language and its idioms, much more than the underlying basics of programming.

Effort in questions is like Adblock. I used to have Adblock and felt clever thinking how I can visit websites without being annoyed by their ads.

Same with effort. A clear but no-effort question shows up, and a user is annoyed, feeling they are expected to do someone else's work. If effort is shown, they still do someone else's work, but are no longer annoyed; probably even feeling magnanimous about it. An expensive illusion, this effort thing, much as adblocking.
