5:00 PM
I've grabbed the [design] tag from all of the meta sites and stuck them into a group
Should help keep tracking the new design mockups much easier

The header reminds me of TeX. Which is a good thing, I love that design

I love the design, and I don't see a problem with it looking somewhat like TeX... What's the reason why that would be a bad thing? The big block of text in the middle differentiates.

I don't know how "Which is a good thing" got interpreted as me saying it was bad

@MichaelMrozek There's an answer to that question which is voicing that concern

5:04 PM
grrr here's my +100 site alignment repbonus so I can start upvoting and asking questions?

Had to get rid of all the cobblestone I collected while mining, heh.

@TimStone @rchern \o/ !

lol good catch :p

@YiJiang I haven't yet seen you complain because of Jin's use of the content CSS property yet :P

@YiJiang Ah, I didn't read the answers. I definitely don't think it looks so much like TeX that they're easy to confuse, it just seemed like a similar concept (the horizontal lines ending in symbols wrapping the title)

5:05 PM
You CSS nazi.

@radp It's fine, what's wrong with it?

how long does it take an SE site to provision an account? My meta.English.SE looks funky on my userpage

If anything, that's the proper use for the content property

@YiJiang I know, but a true nazi doesn't care!!

@radp :|

5:06 PM
You cheap plastic imitation of a nazi.

@drachenstern define "funky"?

Also "provision"

@YiJiang .─.

@MarcGravell I think it was that I was looking at meta.E.SE instead of E.SE and I didn't see the linked accounts and then /facepalm'd that the SE metas are different than meta.SO

5:07 PM
@radp There's a grammar nazi in my class. I would annoy him by going up to him and whisper softly "dices" into his ear
6
And he would go totally bonkers because of that

@MarcGravell Also I want my +100 so I can comment :p

bbl moving to diff place.

@YiJiang That is by far the most obscurely hilarious thing I've heard all week.

@MichaelMrozek do I really need to explain account provisioning to this room? I think not

@drachenstern Is that broken again? It just got marked [status-completed] for the second time about an hour ago

5:08 PM
Hi all.

@drachenstern I have no idea what you mean by "account provision", but I guess if other people do then it doesn't matter

@MichaelMrozek idk, I literally just created my account when I asked in here

Looks OK on the parent:
drachenstern, Shreveport, LA
1

@MichaelMrozek how long does it take to setup an account and have all the features (like +100 on association) show up. A lot of times those things are run on like 15minute scripts

@YiJiang What's wrong with "dices"?

5:08 PM
(except the rep of course)

Also... creepy.

I'll find out how long the association takes

@drachenstern Ah. That should all happen immediately, you get the bonus at association time. At least that's how it used to work

@MarcGravell hence my point about aren't the SE metas different than meta.SO in that the account is tied to the parent? instead of being a separate entity?
@MichaelMrozek well it's not +100 so I was curious how long it takes, is all. I don't mind the wait

I mention the folllowing question again only because it was last brought up late last night when most were already gone. That said:

Q: Ability to add "source" to quote?

MosheWhen people quote others, it is common practice to add a source or attribution of the original speaker. When you select text and hit the quote button, there should be a pop-up that asks for an optional attribution. The attribution should be added and formatted in some way as well. (While I orig...

5:10 PM
lol@Moshe quit spamming! :p

@drachenstern That's why I was saying it seems to be broken again; there's been problems the last few days where people aren't getting the bonus when they should

@PopularDemand The proper plural is dice, and the singular is die, right?

@drachenstern - You were the only person here last time!

7
Q: Is it OK to say "dice and dices" instead of "die and dice"

Vincent McNabbThe only times I have ever heard the word "die" to refer to one dice are from my mother, and from my primary school English teacher. Every person I ever hear always says, "give me a dice" if they want one, and "give me the dice" if they want two. I used to "correct" people to say "die" if they me...

@Moshe +1, good idea

5:12 PM
Thanks

@MichaelMrozek well it finally linked my SO and meta.SO the other day ;)

Is "dice" and "die" a "dying form"? I didn't really think so, but...

@YiJiang correct

@Moshe et all, XMPP is down in case you cared. Probably back later today

@YiJiang Oh, jeez, I thought you were talking about the food prep technique.

5:13 PM
@YiJiang I say "die" all the time

You know, "the chef dices onions."

@YiJiang I've never heard somebody use "dice" for singular, and I've never heard "dices" at all (except for @PopularDemand's usage)

@PopularDemand Yeah somehow I read "slice and dice" at first even though "slice" is nowhere in the question :-)
@MichaelMrozek Likewise

@drachenstern Apparently there is a known bug - fixed but not yet deployed. Apparently also: if you clear and re-associate it goes through a different code path and you will get it.

@MichaelMrozek Indeed, it's not like the error people make with "it's just one vertice."

5:14 PM
@MichaelMrozek should I say something to someone?

@drachenstern I would've said to comment on this, but I guess they already know

@MarcGravell can you explain "clear and reassociate"? that sounds like trouble. :p ... I don't mind waiting. Honestly

@TheUnhandledException - Okay, thanks. It's a royal pain to login, although I do have FF, if that would make things easier.

@Moshe You mean to authenticate to post?

@YiJiang - I think your question requires a question mark at the end of the title, speaking of grammar. ;-)

5:15 PM
commented anyways for Kevin's benefit.

@TheUnhandledException - Yep

@drachenstern best thing is to wait, then ;p

@MarcGravell I intend to ;)
ok people, I'm off to code SQL, tag me to get my attn

tag
made you look

@Moshe Two things. First, save the /fkey and /cookie messages in a text file, then you can copy and paste them each time
Second, if you or anyone else have ideas on how to make it easier please let me know!!

5:20 PM
until the next time they change, @TheUnhandledException

@Moshe How often do yours change?
Mine haven't changed in 4 days now

How do I change them?

change what?
your cookie? I guess log out and log in again?

/fkey?

I am not sure. @balpha or @MarcGravell? :-)

5:22 PM
That's my username, right?

Mine have remained constant

Oh, well perhaps there's a way to make a simple desktop app that will log you in.

iirc, fkey changes at the same time the session token changes

@YiJiang hm?

Or perhaps an iOS app.

5:23 PM
@YiJiang what about when one dices with fate?

@Moshe The issue as @TimStone found is the cookie is HTTPonly so we can't get it using javascript. Which is a Good Thing, just makes my XMPP life much more difficult

Ah

And that's the harder one to obtain

Anyone know what Anti-Java answer @Fosco was talking about before? I see it starred on the side.

@TheUnhandledException @balpha and @MarcGravell are out to get you. You should probably take this personally. (;

5:25 PM
just to mention this: if you give your session cookies to someone else, they have all it takes to impersonate you on the main site

It is almost like we don't want arbitrary code stealing your cookies and impersonating people!

@TheUnhandledException - So maybe a simple HTTP request-er program can get the cookie.

not implying that @TheUnhandledException is up to anything, but keep it in mind

@rchern LOL. Why do you say they're out to get me? :-)

@TheUnhandledException the alternative is boring.

5:26 PM
@balpha Oh, I completely agree @balpha. Anyone who sends me their cookie is implicitly trusting me!

Well, I think that @TheUnhandledException should greet everyone in XMPP chat with his cookies in exchange for theirs.

And yes, when you logged in yesterday @Moshe I saw your fkey and cookie scroll by in my SSH terminal. So I could easily have become you if I wanted to. But I have no desire to do so, I use my powers for good instead of evil :-)

Sounds fair.

@rchern See the image a few posts above that message. ;)

Actually, chat.SE is slightly different in this respect, since the cookie is chat-specific.

5:27 PM
:-)

@Moshe Maybe the cookies for my sockpuppet ;-)

@TheUnhandledException - Yes, but then it would be everyone's sock puppet.

In all seriousness if anyone is concerned about security and doesn't trust others (which you shouldn't), you should be downloading the source, reviewing it, and running your own bridge!

@TheUnhandledException I don't want to wear your socks. :P

@Moshe I hope nobody else has athlete's foot!

5:28 PM
Puppet is a funny word. I wonder where it comes from? Off to English.SE...

No; just leprosy.

@TheUnhandledException ... ... ...
I drew a picture of a hand drawing shades on windows in my dorm room.

@MarcGravell Get your own sockpuppet then! On wait, sorry, forgot about rchern.

That was on Monday.

@TheUnhandledException O:

5:29 PM
Why would I need a sock puppet?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!!!!!

Today I drew a hand drawing blind people, title "Drawing the Blinds".
So, a friend here asked me if I know how to make Venetian Blinds.
I said, "erm, not sure".
To which he answered

poke their eyes out.

Remind me again why I'm supposedly @MarcGravell's sock puppet?

5:30 PM
My low-rep account strictly for SO testing (note: no voting etc)

@rchern Don't make me get out the screenshot.

Oh right. Because @TimStone spreads lies!

@Moshe That's awful
er
@rchern That's right ;-)

Nonsense, I just clarify common confusions for the greater good.

@TheUnhandledException - It is, but I really did draw those pictures.
@TheUnhandledException - But it is awful. I agree.

5:33 PM
@balpha I think I will put a warning to this effect into the help
So before the system accepts your auth details it clearly warns you

The help didn't work for me, btw in iChat
@TheUnhandledException - did you see my PHP question from last night?

@balpha also, all the more reason we should have an API for authenticating :-)

Q: PHP script to loop through all of the files in a directory?

MosheI'm looking for a PHP script that loops through all of the files in a directory so I can do things with the filename, such as format, print or add it to a link. I'd like to be able to sort the files by name, type or by date created/added/modified. (Think fancy directory "index".) I'd also like to...

@Moshe I did, looked like you got a good answer, right?

@TheUnhandledException - I got a bunch of 'em. I'm not sure which one to work with.

5:34 PM

A: PHP script to loop through all of the files in a directory?

dbemerlinYou can use the DirectoryIterator. Example from php Manual: <?php $dir = new DirectoryIterator(dirname(__FILE__)); foreach ($dir as $fileinfo) { if (!$fileinfo->isDot()) { var_dump($fileinfo->getFilename()); } } ?>

That one
(In my opinion)

Okay, looks good.
I'll try it
Got to get to work on finishing that flash project.

I feel like it's food time...and yet.

Time to implement the same thumbnail system for the video player.

A: What languages have their popularity inaccurately represented in TIOBE?

FoscoI don't agree with Java being #1. It's slow (still, despite all the propaganda that says otherwise.) It uses a virtual machine, rather than running natively on the intended target. I can't come up with a single example Java application that I like. The silly naming conventions (beans, jars, wars...

Hello

5:39 PM
@Chacha102 Hey there

@Chacha102 Hey Chacha

'Ello

I haven't read a fiction book in a while
I'm debating picking one up..

I read a lot of non-fiction..

@MarcGravell et all, thoughts:
in XMPP, 1 min ago, by The Unhandled Exception
Please note: if you give your session cookie to anyone else, you have given them all it takes to impersonate you on the main site. This is obviously necessary to allow the XMPP bridge to post messages as you, but for full disclosure you are sending these details to the XMPP server you are using so please make sure you trust the staff of sed server.

oo.. I don't like that. I was not aware that would be a limitation of your system!

@Fosco that's the limitation of all cookie-based-auth systems
otherwise you have to reauth on every visit
https prevents that in part, but it could (with machine access) be compromised still
of course, if you have machine access....

@Fosco I'm very, very, very open to workarounds!!!
I can't think of any, so I'm focusing on other aspects of the system
And this is only for write access
Read access works without authenticating
That's very important

le sigh

Q: Is there a keybind to minimize all windows, without a toggle?

George MarianI know about the show desktop keybind, which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without a toggle. I'm on a default install (i.e Gnome, Metacity & Compiz). I've looked through all the locations to configure keybinds, that I know. I've also looked at ...

I know about the show desktop keybind, which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without a toggle So, what's the first answer? You guessed it!
/headdesk

5:47 PM
@GeorgeMarian Apparently you should have typed out the key combination in flashing text to really drive the point home.

lol maybe =/

Maybe the answerer was distracted by that huge header and missed that part.

Huh, no OOP pros have touched this yet, I am surprised. I was expecting a number of answers by now! It shouldn't be too ruby-specific, I'd think this same basic question would apply to most OOP languages...

Q: How can I improve the hierarchy of my event classes?

JoshFor the XMPP interface for the Stack Overflow chat I am parsing the JSON feed from chat and generating Ruby objects for every chat events, such as messages sent, edits sent, users logging in or out, etc. I also generate events for "slash-commands" sent to the XMPP server, like "/help" or "/auth" ...

Where's @MichaelMrozek when we need commentary on the Ubuntu site?
@TheUnhandledException They're too busy with their groupies.
Remind me later if no one's answered, and I'll take a look to see if I have anything to chime in.

hahaha, will do :-)

5:51 PM
I'll be sure to litter my answer with ternary operators in for loops, of course. ;)

@TimStone Those are the first two sentences in the body. Or do you mean he was distracted by the question title? Which mentions no toggle.

@GeorgeMarian No, no, I meant the big colourful block at the top of the site. There's certainly nothing wrong with your question. :)

heh
Worst of all, there's a second answer (w/ a screenshot of all things!) which states the exact same thing!
This is gonna be a fun morning!

Hmm, the edited comment icon doesn't fit in the space allotted to it, it seems. shakes fist at the design

5:56 PM
@TimStone AskUbuntu sucks! Ubuntu sucks! Unix SE for life! Mod fight! Blame rchern!
Does that make you feel better?

@PopularDemand Yeah, thanks for that.

@TimStone Happy to help.

What is everyone up to?

@PopularDemand I was right there with ya until the end. ):

Any of you guys active on Github?

5:59 PM
@Chacha102 I am...debugging something that one of our programmers claims isn't working right.

@rchern Please note that I was only representing the views I believed Michael Mrozek would promulgate, not my own opinions.

(;
@Chacha102 kind of.
if you use kind of loosely (;

@Chacha102 I'm wondering about the reading comprehension skills of some of the people on askubunut.com...

@GeorgeMarian Ha, "ubunut," nice.

reading comprehension is overrated.

6:00 PM
@GeorgeMarian I'm questioning your ability to spell 'Ubuntu'...

@PopularDemand :) "Tell 'em what you really feel"

@rchern Speaking of which, I definitely need commits for this week.

Hi everyone, I have a quick question. Is there any other unwritten rules of MSO like meta.stackoverflow.com/q/70397/153371? If yes, where are those written?

@GeorgeMarian huh?

6:01 PM
@PopularDemand I canged it back, just for you. :)

@Eldros It is unwritten for a reason

Q: How does Meta Stack Overflow work?

Popular DemandMeta Stack Overflow seems to have different rules and user behavior than the "regular" Stack Exchange sites. How is it different? Individual questions answered below: What do votes mean on Meta? Why was my well-written post downvoted? When should posts on Meta be set to community wiki? Why ...

@Eldros It changes frequently and if we wrote it down, it would be wrong in a week

@GeorgeMarian hurrah!

@PopularDemand Re: my typo (So, that quote would be said to me.)

6:01 PM
@PopularDemand huzzah!

@GeorgeMarian Ah, that was a quick cange.

@GeorgeMarian Right. What's it a reference to?

We need more Friday stuff..

@Chacha102 define frequently

I haven't had a good laugh on meta in a while
@Eldros Frequently: adverb - At inconsistant intervals with no prior announcement and/or notice.

6:02 PM
@PopularDemand I guess that they're nuts over there on askubuntu and can't read?

@GeorgeMarian I hear askubunut.com is really a hot place....

@Chacha102 It seems you can be funny on your own, why don't you try to some of this Friday stuff?

@GeorgeMarian Oh, since you put it in quotes I thought maybe it was a line from a movie or something.
Never mind me....

;)

6:03 PM
Ah, no.
That was to imply that i wasn't me saying it.

@Fosco - Oh well, It's now +12 and -11. ;P

@Eldros I plague these guys enough...

@Chacha102 Define enough... In the reflection you don't need to :p

57 mins ago, by Yi Jiang
@radp There's a grammar nazi in my class. I would annoy him by going up to him and whisper softly "dices" into his ear

@PopularDemand By the way thanks for the link.

6:05 PM
@Eldros Enough: unknown - To a point at which heads will explode with a simple compiler error.

lol

@TheUnhandledException So if the XMPP bridge was run by SOIS, there wouldn't be an issue?

What would we do without muffincat?

One more

6:08 PM
@Eldros Sure thing.

@PopularDemand Too bad it can't be stickied

You know, we never use Chat Feedback on Meta anymore..

@Eldros Well, it could, but you'd have to get a mod on it. I suspect they think we have enough [featured] questions.

That is because it is perfect...

@MarcGravell Ehh ... We still don't have /me support...
Furthermore, we should have the autocreated General room be named 'The Tavern (General)'

6:12 PM
/me thinks Marc would be silly to talk about himself in the 3rd person
/me thinks that way madness lies

thinks that seems sensible.
Hmm, must turn off that extension.

has support for /me

@PopularDemand I don't think that belong in the featured question: meta.stackoverflow.com/q/59282/153371 unless that is the featured bad question. Or I don't understand the feature tag.

@Eldros [featured] is not the same as [feature].

@TimStone /me does too!
(;

6:16 PM
@rchern Heheh. ;)

@PopularDemand well when I'm searching the tag there is no [featured]. I then made the reasonable assumption, or maybe n
not
/me should learn the difference between return carriage and backspace

@PopularDemand what the... let me double check
ok got confused by the color, my brain didn't register its presence
my mistake

@Eldros 's all good.

6:31 PM
You know there too many different use of the word feature in meta :p
it can be somewhat confusing.

@Eldros Someone has attempted to address the terminology issue, too, but didn't do anything about "feature":

Q: Stack Overflow Glossary - Dictionary of Commonly-Used Terms

PollyannaWhat are the common phrases, words, abbreviations that are used on Stack Overflow, Server Fault, Super User, and Meta Stack Overflow? How do you do this snippet of question?

6:47 PM
@Eldros that would be called oneboxing

@Eldros Just paste the question link

Q: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThere is special linking to some sites in chat. What is the full list of supported and integrated sites?

You're gonna wanna read a chat faq

@drachenstern Yeah I think so too
In fact I've got a lot of reading to do methink

@Eldros but welcome to SO and I hope you like it here
we're a strange bunch, we think

s/SO/M&/

6:49 PM
but then again, we like us and think we're quite normal

Well I'm right at home then :p
ah pardon we are

ok, who hid the chat faq on meta?

nonsense, that would be too easy
I thought it was on meta itself :p
everything else seems to be a faq on meta :p

ah so the oneboxing doesn't work with the short link provided in each question
A bit illogical but whatever

6:58 PM
@Eldros It should; did you have a problem with it?

@Eldros Which short link?

Well in the first message I did short after 19:00 (Berlin time), I had such a link but it did no oneboxing
maybe it was because it was in the middle of a sentence
