2:00 PM
He has no idea what he's talking about ^
@3ventic but there are none right now, right? i was just gonna ask if they've got any news from a feat-req i posted..
@NickCraver This has been proven time and again.
I know when someone's working for SE though
But I have no idea what their actual job description is
@reikyoushin I just talked to the dev team. They said it is in the queue but they should get around to reviewing it in 6 to 8 weeks. They thank you for your patience in this matter.
@reikyoushin Nick is one of the dev team, what do you want exactly?
> Disclaimer: the above is totally untrue and should not be construed as anything resembling the truth. Chances are someone has already read over it, but that they haven't figured out what to do with it yet. Things sometimes take a while, but if you let us know which question it is, it may get more eyes. Also consider putting a bounty on it.
2:06 PM
if there is any news bout it.. cuz, there are no answers/comments from devs so i dunno what happened.. :)
Ask Nick, don't be shy :)
Tim Post is also one of the team and he did post a comment
@Nick, could you please protect this question? With the best intentions, Yannis decided to reddit it which will quite possibly overwhelm our poor community moderation.
@ShadowWizard is he a dev too? i know he's a mod though..
@reikyoushin Community Manager, if I'm not mistaken
@reikyoushin he is community manager... not a web developer but you can say that he takes part in what the devs are actually doing
2:09 PM
@reikyoushin For reference, most on Meta do not get comments/answers from devs. Many get put off for years before being decided or commented on, some just get slapped with a [status-declined], and even ones that get handled quickly take more than a week.
@jmac true, but that one is more of a
anyway, I think that until https is complete we can't expect it to be done
Same applies though, IME. I sure it will be addressed soon enough.
oh well, i'll just wait (until i remember it again). thanks guys!
https is very close to being done, though
So just watch over the below question until it's [status-completed]

Q: Better HTTPS support for Stack Exchange sites

NullUserException อ_อSo it looks like Stack Exchange now supports HTTPS (to some extent). Which is awesome! But there are a few problems: The certificate is for *.stackexchange.com, which causes browsers to throw all kinds of ugly errors when you access a different domain, eg: https://stackoverflow.com https://su...

2:11 PM
at least that's what it looks like.
@3ventic true, they make great progress so far :)
Thanks @Nick! Appreciated.
I used https only for a while
only the top bar links didn't turn into https (and they are a bit hard to change with a userscript too)
other than that and site metas, everything worked fine
because *.stackexchange.com doesn't match meta.*.stackexchange.com...
The assumption that valid cert === we fully support HTTPS is baffling to me, in some ways that extension does more harm than good
@NickCraver What's left besides external libraries like mathjax and site-metas?
I'm usually forgetting something
2:15 PM
everything users submit
@NickCraver I can only assume no one really looked into it before adding the rule for the network.
@TimStone there's a rule whitelist? holy hell I thought it was just checking, yes we should be removed
@3ventic Images added to posts, regexes that assume http://, etc.

A: Can't login with Stack Exchange OpenID when HTTPS-Everywhere plugin is active - apparent protocol mismatch

Michael KjörlingI can't say I found out exactly what is wrong, but I think I've found out how to fix the immediate error. Go into the HTTPS Everywhere "Enable / Disable Rules" dialog (in Firefox, this is done through Tools -> HTTPS Everywhere -> Enable / Disable Rules; apparently, in Chrome you click the blue ...

images is a matter of "if it's imgur, use https, if not, display a link instead"
Am I missing something... why is this answer so highly up-voted? It doesn't address the question at all...

A: Better HTTPS support for Stack Exchange sites

Colonel PanicHTTPS should be universal. There is no excuse. There's no argument against that. Recent revelations about the blanket surveillance conducted by intelligence agencies (NSA's Prism in the USA, GCHQ's Tempora in the UK) make it clear why. (The draft specification of HTTP 2.0 actually mandates trans...

2:19 PM
youtube videos, copyrights on images (can we proxy, should we proxy?), embeds (chat has tons of one-boxing). What about existing images, links, not? Wildcards can't match 2 levels (since some jackass registered *.*.com and ruined it for everyone, foo.*.bar.com is explicitly forbidden as well). Also moving every meta isn't a completely trivial matter, for that to work we have to change how cookies work, which means gaming.meta.stackexchange.com would no longer inherit the cookie
@reikyoushin Ah, also for reference, the devs usually view chat as incredibly low priority, so if your question is about chat, it has an even smaller chance of getting fixed.
We have to have a shared stackexchange.com login cookie to actually move meta, again not a small change, there's quite a bit to do....and that's just on the Q&A side
(wait, isn't Tim Post a dev? He commented on it the day it was released!)
I just realized how meta.gaming.stackexchange.com makes it sound like it's an SE site about metagaming.
@3ventic "Well I know that SE Devs have a THACO of 17, and my AC is -4 thanks to my suspenders of protection, so I think I will taunt them since I know they can't hurt me."
2:22 PM
I didn't understand any of that.
@jmac his role is community manager, but has the dev/sysadmin skillzzz which is very handy
Community manager, eh? That explains a lot actually.
@NickCraver Thanks for taking care of that workplace question. Didn't expect the non answers to appear so quickly after I reddited it, I usually check back after an hour or so, and flag if I spot any problems.
@NickCraver They committed the ruleset on April 1, 2012. ...I guess that's kind of an April Fool's joke.
What's the reason links are restricted to http(s)/ftp protocols?
2:36 PM
@3ventic what do you mean?
That I can't link like [this](steam://friends/list)
because the protocol isn't whitelisted
@3ventic Pretty sure you're totally right!
(I could have sworn I saw someone have one that was like bob.bob.bob or somesuch, they must have preceded it with http:// i s'pose)
but it's kind of pointless, because I can still do something like this (the same link as above)
invalid steam link though
2:41 PM
What the heck is this steam protocol thingie anyway?
It's something that can be used to control Steam
Even water is on the internet now?
Steam is the technical term for water vapor, the gaseous phase of water, which is formed when water boils. Technically speaking, in terms of the chemistry and physics, steam is invisible and cannot be seen; however, in common language it is often used to refer to the visible mist of water droplets formed as this water vapor condenses in the presence of (cooler) air. At lower pressures, such as in the upper atmosphere or at the top of high mountains water boils at a lower temperature than the nominal at standard temperature and pressure. If heated further it becomes superheated steam. T...
Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer, and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. In October 2012, Valve expanded the service to include non-gaming software. Steam provides the user with installation and automatic management of software across multiple computers, as well as community features such as friends lists and groups, cloud saving, and in-game voice and chat functionality. The software provides a freely availab...
Oh, I actually think I have that installed. I feel kind of sheepish.
I blame age.
but it applies just as well to links to start Teamspeak3 for example: resources.3ventic.eu/r/ts3server/3ventic.eu
2:43 PM
I agree with whitelisting protocols, no need for steam or utorrent links in Stack Overflow
@ShadowWizard The point is that it just drives people to use redirection services instead, where the browser won't tell you the real link, but the http address instead.
I think it probably makes most people think, "Do I really want to go through the trouble of posting it?" to which the answer for most folks is "No"
@3ventic I think strong point is prevent abuse
@Nick you still here?
Stack Overflow probably doesn't benefit from them, but in an answer to a Steam question, a Steam link might be very useful.
@3ventic well, maybe it can be white listed on arqade then :)
2:50 PM
@NickCraver I was going to submit an update to disable the ruleset by default, but I don't really understand their process (hint: it involves mailing lists)
@rekire Why?
because it's no dub
I don't see how your proposal changes the reasons stated in the dup...
the orginal question was simply why. there where some reasons and that question contains some ideas for fixing that problems
3:02 PM
If a sub-10k user follows a link to a deleted answer, what do they see? The question?
@rekire It doesn't fix the biggest reason we shut it down: maintaining all the tax info and filings in every state we have a employee in.
Regarding my last post, if no-one knows, can a sub-10k user on SO follow this link and report back? stackoverflow.com/a/21127886/474189
@NickCraver hm okay
I visited Stack Exchange's headquarters today. You guys won't believe the spectacular gift I received.
@Pëkka what did you get? :)
3:05 PM
A paper bag containing something brown?
A unicorn handbag?
hehe
@TimStone close. (It's uploading in the other window)
Slooooow Wifi

An honest to Goodness Fake Gucci Handbag.
Cool!
Stuffed with SE swag.
3:07 PM
It's not a "gift" when you steal it.
So super cool
@Duncan lol
....notifying Amanda we found her purse
haha
It only just occurred to me to open a "private" browsing window and answer my own question about deleted answer links. Finally! A use that isn't porn!
are there in general any stackexchange events in europa?
@Pëkka Hahahahahah
3:11 PM
@TimStone There's a photo of me wearing that handbag in the SE offices, in front of the NYC skyline.
Now that's a Kodak moment.
I'll post it when they send it to me.
@rekire no, I don't think there will be any such events anymore
they give shirts away in special events like Winter Bash and they also sent shirts to the top rep users of Stack Overflow a while ago.
It worked pretty well.
They did do this meetup thing though, which was under the umbrella of Stack OVerflow but organized by local groups.
... and may happen again, I think.
@Pëkka you mean DevDays, or something else?
3:20 PM
@ShadowWizard something else. Hold on
Laura Dobrzynski on May 03, 2012

Thank you to everyone who organized or attended a Stack Overflow meetup! Our Meetup Everywhere community has grown to over 4,400 people in almost 600 cities, and many of those people signed up for meetups in their areas this year. Many meetups were small, but we hope you all had a good time and that those smaller groups had an even better opportunity to get to know each other.

Our official hashtag is #SOmeetup, and we’ve seen a lot of great pictures and stories on Twitter, Flickr and YouTube so far. If you haven’t had a chance to upload yours yet, please do! Take a look at some of what people have shared so far: …

Oh, that's cool
But there wasn't any during 2013, right?
I don't think so, no
But different from the DevDays, those events are not officially "dead".
Suppose we will have group of users from several countries willing to arrange it again, how can such thing be triggered again?
@ShadowWizard good question! I guess you'd have to talk to the team
One of the Community Managers
I'm only one though, guess they'll just tell me "first contact more users willing to organize this in their country", no?
3:25 PM
Speaking of meetups, I'm hungry. We should plan food-consumption-time sometime in the nearish future @Pëkka, assuming you're free one day.
@ShadowWizard yeah, that sounds likely.
@ShadowWizard Yeah, you'd probably have to get something semi-established first.
@TimStone absolutely! I was meaning to write to you about that.
Semester starts next week, but I have a cozy schedule going on. Nothing on Monday and Friday
(well, "nothing" in terms of no class...)
So I'd be totally available for lunch on those days, for example, or something later in the day.
Cool, I'll try to figure out when I might be baby-free then, and we'll work something out.
@TimStone great!
3:27 PM
Great. Now I'm hungry.
Excellent, you feel my pain then.
Wow, and it's only 10:30. I was hoping it was closer to lunch time. |:
I'm on a fasting day today (5:2 diet thing), so the hunger is quite serious stuff.
Oh...Okay, you have it worse than I do. Sorry. :P
Although my wife has just encourage me to bin the fasting day until tomorrow and head out for a burger. Which I'm so going to do. Shame it took me until 3.30pm to reach that decision.
Time to find some food!
@Duncan what has helped me when I did something similar was to get some 0-calorie, organic broth and occasionally drink a quarter gallon of it. It isn't quite the same as eating but it dampens the hunger. This stuff is spectacularly good, I use it all the time even here in the States
I'm unsure whether I got the conversion right... off to check on Google.
After all, I don't want a death by broth overdose on my hands
3:32 PM
I might just stop posting here for a few weeks to freak youout.
@Duncan argh
Actually, I find the fasting days generally ok.
OK, an eighth gallon is more like it.
I'm sure there is a more sensible way to express that quantity.
You don't tend to be hungry when you know you can't eat.
@Duncan very true.
3:35 PM
@Pëkka That Gucci handbag thing is awesome. Those SE folks are hilarious.
Also: reading all this about food reminds me that's it's time for second breakfast.
@jadarnel27 totally. Must remember to thank Tim Post for the idea.
(If only there were a chat room where I can reach him. D'oh)
And second breakfast today is graham crackers with either peanut butter or nutella on them.
@TimPost thanks for the spectacular gift idea, I laughed my ass off!
@Pëkka Hahahahahah, got a photo of it handy?
35 mins ago, by Pëkka
user image
They have one of me wearing it
3:42 PM
LMAO!!!!
I'll post it once I have it.
Wearing... just the bag? :-O
@TimPost hilarious, isn't it.
@Duncan that would be... the next step, I suppose.
But no
@Duncan I doubt the bag is big enough :P
Watch as @Pëkka stars that message...
3:44 PM
The Full Monty is a 1997 British comedy-drama film directed by Peter Cattaneo, starring Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, William Snape, Steve Huison, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Barber, and Hugo Speer. The screenplay was written by Simon Beaufoy. The film is set in Sheffield, England, and it tells the story of six unemployed men, four of them former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act (à la Chippendale dancers) in order to gather enough money to get somewhere else and for main character, Gaz, to be able to see his son. Gaz declares that their show will be better than the Chippendal...
@ShadowWizard That's a pretty sizable compliment.
@jadarnel27 I could get completely hooked on Peanut Butter. I would eat it all day if getting a second seat for the flight back in May weren't so expensive. They should sell it in separate state-licensed stores like they do for liquor.
@Pëkka I think that's probably the oddest gift idea I've come up with yet. I knew you'd laugh as soon as you saw it.
@TimPost it came completely out of left field. I had an inkling I might get something but I'd never thought about that.
Who ended up actually giving it to you, sam?
3:51 PM
@Duncan lol.
It does look small on me.
But that's just the new thing.
Fashion, man!
this has been retagged with shouldn't that question been deleted all together?
@rene Delete vote applied!
Ok, it has mine as well
I usually don't like deleting old stuff, but that one was really off topic. Nuked. :)
Tnx!
4:04 PM
@ShadowWizard Why not?
@Pëkka Hahaha, peanut butter is amazing (though I don't think I feel as strongly about it as you do).
My dad eats peanut butter as a snack by itself. He will just get a large, heaping spoonful of it, and eat it.
@Duncan because it's still useful. If it doesn't fit the rules anymore it's OK to close it, but better keep it around.
@ShadowWizard Fair enough. I decide on a case-by-case basis and agree that vaguely useful stuff should remain.
4:26 PM
Didn't you say you might be passing through the Carolinas at some point this year, @Pëkka?
I guess I could drive up to Delaware and have lunch with you and @TimStone.
But it seems like kind of a hike.
@jadarnel27 That is an absolutely firm plan, yeah. Some time in spring.
@jadarnel27 that would be cool, too, of course.
Haha, well perhaps we can meet up for lunch or something when you're in this area. This can be your tour of meeting SE people haha.
Looks like it would be about an 8 hour drive for me to meet you guys up there.
That would be kind of epic, but probably hard to justify.
@jadarnel27 that sums it up pretty well. :)
@jadarnel27 absolutely. I'll be in touch well in advance.
> This can be your tour of meeting SE people haha.
Yeah, actually that's the plan! So many cool users that I want to meet are located in the Carolinas for some reason.
4:56 PM
Haha, @Pëkka. I was thinking more in terms of your visit to America in general. Sounds like you've met a bunch of folks.
The Internet is awesome.
@jadarnel27 We have tax-free shopping, totally worth it.
@TimStone Nice - that could actually work for talking my wife into it =P
Which is obviously what I meant by "hard to justify."
"Babe, I could buy stuff for you tax-free!"
5:16 PM
Rawr, Josh smash!
@Damon That is an extremely non-constructive way to ask someone to show their code. Especially someone who obviously does not ask questions here frequently, and might not understand the rules of the site. Behavior like that just contributes to the view that the Stack Overflow community is unkind and insular. — jadarnel27 4 mins ago
Rawr, Undo smash too!
tries unsuccessfully to find dev.meta.se
I bet Manish is already in it :P
meta.stackexchange.com redirects to meta.stackoverflow
I think it used to go somewhere else.
Hmmm, I though that behavior had existed for awhile.
No, I think it used to redirect to a page for some other Meta service gizmo they used for a while in the early-early days.
5
Q: Are meta.stackexchange and meta.stackoverflow "one and the same"?

alex grayThis seems counterintuitive to the vertical nature of Stack Exchange itself, but I cannot manage to browse to meta.stackexchange.com: I get redirected to meta.stackoverflow.com, instead. This is also despite the fact that these URLs resolve to separate IP addresses... ; <<>> DiG 9.7.3-P3 <<>> m...

At least as long ago as 2011 =)
Hrmph
5:22 PM
UserVoice was that other meta service.
I could have sworn it used to redirect to a page on UserVoice saying to go to mSO
It's possible that there has been more than one behavior associated with that domain over the years.
I suppose
So I'm not saying you're wrong =)
I just never noticed it.
I'm probably wrong :P
5:25 PM
Well yeah.
But I didn't say it!
Because I'm a nice guy.
Unless you're Panama.
Then I'm less nice.
rofl
I hope you have carpet, and not hardwood floors. Or at least a rug. It seems like all that rolling on the floor would start to cause discomfort, despite the accompanying laughter.
Yup, carpet.
I have a special rofling mat. Nice and cushy.
2
Hahaha, good.
6:19 PM
@Tim Hi, is Mr. Post in here? Just wanted to know if you received the email I sent in reply to your email yet? I sent the reply I think at least two - three days ago.
just say @Tim
it summons the @Tim out of his hideout
sometimes you get @Tim and sometimes you get @Tim
6:32 PM
1 month till valentines day
is there still time to find someone?
Anyone want to buy 50 unicorns for $300?
4
A: Where can I get a unicorn?

SpontifixusThanks to Anna's hint I did find a web shop selling these beautiful creatures! They don't just sell one of them, you will need to buy a whole bunch. Price starts at $6 if 50 of them get ordered. I'm quite sure that there will be 50 of us wanting such a "Super Soft Stuffed Animal- Unicorn". Even...

@ShadowWizard That be a good gift to give a loved one on valentines day.
@AlienArrays true, and to users here who want it (not for free of course :))
7:02 PM
I assume this is off-topic as 'too broad'? stackoverflow.com/questions/21170514/…
7:27 PM
@rene the title suggests POB
Huh. It occurs to me that Jon Skeet has more silver badges on SO than I have rep. He also has more Nice Answer badges than I have rep. As someone with VTC privs that scares me.
@JanDvorak ok that is indeed better

2 hours later…
9:23 PM
@NickCraver As I saw you looked into the 4 rep for editing problem, could you look into this one (the one it was marked as a dupe of) and the other linked questions to see if there actually is a bug?
Okay, nobody vote on my SO posts:
I have 1337 rep
*had
*now I do have 1337 again
What's so special about 1337?
9:26 PM
Ah. :P
anybody here know anything about moderator elections?
@Flyk No, but I want to :P
Maaaaybe.
is it 600 characters or 600 words?
rephrase
what is the max limit for the nomination in terms of characters/words?
1200 characters, last I checked.
There's a counter when you submit a nomination post.
9:38 PM
oh that's far more reasonable that what I was told
@TimStone yeah but nominations aren't opened yet :p
Yeah, I was just covering my ass in case I'm somehow wrong, but I'm pretty certain it's 1200 characters.
Added source for plagiarized text hmm, that couldn't be an audit at all.
@hichris123 real random titles are used...
@jadarnel27 Just tell her you're taking her to look at a diamond. I'll wear my moderator hat.
@Jan I know, just who would do that? :P
9:43 PM
the source author?
Maybe, but it's in the Suggested Edits queue.
a source auhor that has <2k?
Oh, you mean the author of the place it got plagerized from... Oh. :P
@TimStone this has turned my excellent short story into a butchered incomprehensible mess
shakes fist
The solution is to just screenshot it and then paste in the image.
9:49 PM
LOL
are you joking or can I actually do that?
I mean, I wouldn't try it, but... :P
Actually they may have disabled images in nomination posts because someone did something obnoxious once, but I don't know if that's a thing or if I'm just making stuff up.
See an unclear post about disabling controls in ASP.NET? Why wouldn't you post a detailed explanation of how to set HTML controls to disabled / read-only?
Just kidding. That was a silly thing for that user to do. Downright silly.
What does that even have to do with the OPs problem? Nothing, that's what.
And now someone has upvoted the answer.
It was one of you people, wasn't it?
9:58 PM
@jadarnel27 I compensated that upvote
Well...there you go. Obviously, you are the only trustworthy user in here.
Don't bet your life on that...
I was hoping my comment would get the user to delete their answer.
Oh, @rene did you ever get those tags fixed with the -'s?
They're trying to help, I guess. But they're not answering the actual question.
10:00 PM
No @hichris123 It seems it didn't
And I feel conflicted about whether that warrants a downvote.
@jadarnel27 well, the first thing is the OP
he has to clear out where that code is running
it matters if it is in page_init, page_load or pre_render
Based on that it either shows the current answer is invalid or it can be improved
Yeah. They really need to clarify what they mean when they say that the controls appear as disabled, but are enabled again by the time the page is done loading.
Or I provided a better one... I need rep in that tag
@hichris123 and still akward...
@jadarnel27 I'll rectract my downvote from the answer if it drops below 0
@rene Yeah, are you going to fix them by removing tag + adding back tag?
10:06 PM
That's kind of you, @rene.
Alright, I've got a hot date tonight, so I'm out of here. No one tell my wife.
WIFE!
have fun...
(just kidding, the date is with my wife)
be nice...
say hi from me, she'll know ;-)
@hichris123 I hoped the rename mod tool would kickin given the fact that some mods were present when we had that conversation earlier
I suppose I didn't asked nicely
@rene Would be nice, but apparently they didn't notice. :P @animuson
@Undo what's with the screenshot? are you responding to this?
10:12 PM
@rene Huh?
Oh, I every once in a while post screenshots of the 10k lowest voted list so that everyone can laugh
10:48 PM
Quite quiet in here
Where's that link to the set-your-milk-out mod tool?
Aug 26 '10 at 18:14, by Shog9
Mods can also come into your house at night and leave your milk out. Some mod abilities aren't talked about much.
^ That one. Found it.
What didn't I notice?
10:51 PM
Was he CM back then already?
I think so
This explains a lot
47 mins ago, by rene
@hichris123 and still akward...
Please rename to and same for rust0.9.
Anyway I thought on a cool Jon Skeet fact during the drive back home
Jon Skeet can write faster than time, so that he post his answer before the question is asked
Just wanted to share
You're comparing two quantities of different dimensions :P
10:53 PM
@animuson Thanks. :P
@Undo when The Skeet is involved, anything is possible :)
Oh, forgot
