7:01 PM
I was just asked to make a change to a program that generates a report (csv file) every day, and emails it to people.

Sounds like great fun

I open up the solution. The entire program is written in "class1.cs." It's 800 lines, and all the code is in "main".

Yay.

You inherited my codebase?

Makes things so much easier. All you have to understand is the main.

7:03 PM
Haha, yeah. I was just complaining about how I haven't gotten to work on much code lately. That's what I get, I suppose =)

It was only supposed to run once and didn't need to be maintained. That was 12 years ago...

@rene I think I hate you.

You're not alone...

I'm still getting requests from former colleagues to explain the code of another colleague because the "chinese students the boss hired don't get it". I'm not surprised at all. Code from hell.

7:04 PM
@Bart I love your optimism.

With some of the code I had to deal with, optimism is all I had left. ;)

You can always ask a question on SO: Please fix my code and drop in that 800 lines. I see that a lot...

7:27 PM
help is broken on data.stackexchange.com/help

Hello hello

@GnomeSlice olleH olleH

Hi di Hi
The query processor ran out of internal resources and could not produce a query plan.
joining 3 tables...really...

depends on your query
some look innocuous but turn out to be real beasts

It already ran once...with results...
I think i used the last resources :-)
sorry about that. It is your server Anna...
it breaks if I add as [Post Link]

7:37 PM
yeah, there's a fair amount of post-processing that happens to make that go
you could probably get away with a concat() call to construct a url yourself, which is the next best thing.

Ok, I'll limit it then to reduce the number or rows
@AnnaLear Can you have a peak in your mod tools for an answer of mine?

@rene what are you looking for?

I would like to confirm that this is flagged.
the answer is mine

Flagged as what? I can look in the 10k tools too, I believe.
(up to a point)

It has 'ModeratorReview` on it in the data explorer.

7:44 PM
yeah, it has an automatic "too many comments" flag on it
from 2011

That won't show in the 10k tools.

Aah I see, sort of automatic flag that is.

8:30 PM
For the drama

Q: Help! I'm lost in how to use data.stackexchange.com

reneWhen using data.stackexchange.com I fail to remember if as [post link] is the correct alias to get the url for the post. Luckily the site has an help link. Unfortunately it is now broken. Can this be fixed?

Just released today
Anyone who has ever played a game called Frozen Synapse might recognize the artist.

8:46 PM
nice

9:03 PM
I'm going to have to learn that I'll never be able to RESCUE ALL THE QUESTIONS, much as I enjoy editing.

We'll accept that, no worries

In case a dev is wondering if all crossbrowser problems for the new /users/login are solved...
0
A: New login & signup pathway for the Stack Exchange network

reneOn /users/login when selecting the Stackexchange login leaving username and password empty and click on login the message 'email is cannot be empty' appears which is good. Not good is the closimng of the dialog ending up in this UX. Can the dialog stay open when an error message is shown? This ...

> email is cannot be empty
^^ ugh

typo fixed

9:11 PM
@rene Oh. That was your typo? I assumed it was theirs.

No, I looked it up...I started typing, then decided to have a look but forget to remove what I already started
Are you going to edit all those questions?
79 is doable

@rene If I can find nothing better to do with my time.
I've just found two on English Language & Usage, for flip's sake! I'll edit those, anyway. And perhaps gradually get to the others over the coming weeks.

If you want I can do some...

@rene I do like the idea of using Data Explorer to generate ad-hoc review queues, so feel free.
(Generally, they require a bunch of other tidying while you're about it.)

Ok, I'll start of the bottom of that list

9:16 PM
@rene Cool.

9:31 PM
Why would this have to be approved?
am I overlooking something?

@JeroenVannevel Edits by people with less than 2000 rep don't go through immediately (unless they're on their own posts, or on community wiki posts). They go into a review queue instead.

I meant why it should be an approved edit instead of rejected

Shouldn't have been really. Quite a pointless edit

so many bad reviews :(

@JeroenVannevel Ah. Why was it approved? I dunno.

9:36 PM
@JeroenVannevel It was a valid edit. look that the revisions: stackoverflow.com/posts/21148547/revisions All he did was a rollback on the title. Which is fine (to me at least)

> Today I have another question for you, because I need YOUR help.
Awesome.

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen eh?

It doesn't add any value though, it's just a sentence rewritten
both are equally fine

@qwertynl The opening line to the original version of that question. It amused me.

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen ahh LOL
3
A: Silently load a browser extension in Javascript

qwertynlNope not possible. And probably illegal in 42 countries.

9:46 PM
"for website testing purposes" ..... suuurreeee

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen I've done the bottom 19 of that Q: list

@rene Cool. It's something I just check now and again and do a few. I'm sure new ones are added from time to time too.
I'll probably do no more tonight. Might get onto them tomorrow morning.

I also sign off

Do people these days still user pen and paper to actually try and debug their little problems, or am I just weird? (Well, not that those two options are mutually exclusive) Far too often I'm wondering why the OP did not just try a couple of simple examples to see what happens.

10:08 PM
@Bart I do it, but others I work with don't so guess it's just the two of us :)
Guys, need a helping hand... got a challenge to reach 100 upvotes for this comment:

You should write a book "The null that hates me". ;) — Shadow Wizard 7 hours ago
Max said: I will write this book if your comment gets at least 100 upvotes :D

done

4! hooray!
96 more to go

Now keep an eye out for that comment to mysteriously disappear at 99

lol
He can cheat, I know

"Comment? What comment? Oh, that one. It had ehm...flags"

10:12 PM
Hmm... let me try something

Hi! -- I was about to make a feature request on meta, when I realized it's so trivial it must have been asked before: Show the author of a comment in the notification / inbox. But my google-fu failed me, could anyone be so kind and give me some hints what to search for?

@dyp interesting, let me use my search spells

dyp
@ShadowWizard +1 for the book idea btw ;)

Can't say that I recall such a feature request

@dyp cheers! 94 to go!
Agree with @Bart, looks like such feature was never requested
Feel free to start one :)

10:17 PM
Really? I thought there was one.
Maybe it was just an answer.
Or I'm imagining things... :P

Are you drunk again?

@Bart No, whatever gave you that idea? :P

dyp
Thanks @ShadowWizard and Bart! Looks like I'll need to draw some circles..

I guess I'm just projecting @hichris123
They better be freehand @dyp.

@Bart Heh.
Aha!
I'm not drunk.

Q: See who left a comment in the global inbox

tbodtI would like to see who left a comment in my global inbox like this: (Except, of course, I would like the actual commentor's name, not "The Person Who Left The Comment".) Could this be considered, or possibly even implemented?

(cc @dyp)

dyp
10:21 PM
@hichris123 Wow thanks! no circles though.. :(

I almost feel like removing my upvote because of that. :P

Hah, see. I take one Christmas week off from the site and I miss all the relevant posts.

@hichris123 missed that one! And need to refresh me spells inventory, getting rusty :(

I just searched . One of the first ones. :P

@hichris123 I looked for notifications :-S
Hmm.... bounty?
Or is it too soon?

10:25 PM
@Bart Vacations are not allowed from a SE site if you want to stay active. Didn't you know that? :P

I fully expect to be suspended soon

@Shadow Well, it's half a month old so... I'd say yes, bounty.
Hmm, who do I have to pay to get @Bart suspended?

Pay me a handsome sum and I'll go on a suspension-worthy rampage

@hichris123 Done! -50 rep for me :(

Does rep or counterfit Peeka rep count?
@ShadowWizard Yay!

10:29 PM
eh, still +70 on Meta today :D
love the easy rep!

10:45 PM
@AnnaLear or @Shog9 anything you guys can have a look at, if you're not doing so already?

@Bart it was already reported

Q: A lot of sock puppet accounts on the Bitcoin Stack Exchange site

JMKI am aware the the Bitcoin site has its own Meta, but that meta was last active on the 6th of January so am posting here also. I'm more of a lurker on Bitcoin Stack Exchange than an actual user, but I was lurking (like I do) and I spotted these guys: dalower mony jeme musakhan joli moly foysal...

And looks like it was totally ignored by the team for some odd reason

Yeah, just saw the comment by Manish about pinging a community mod.

OK, emailed the team :)

/me calls back the messenger pigeon

@Bart nooo, it might be faster than email ;)

11:02 PM
@TimStone It took some time to actually get around to it, but making the change appears much simpler than I worried.

@ShadowWizard I'm gonna let whoever handles that email look into this. In the middle of some other stuff right now.

Hmm, I ran out all my flags several hours go for today, yet I now see see 2 flags remaining. What is the reason for this?

@LaszloPapp How many flags do you have all total? If you have less than 100/day (the max), you can earn more flags for 10 more valid-invalid flags, and you get that on the day they're deemed valid.

85, hmm, interesting.

Yeah, how many flags you get a day is kind of weird.
You can also earn 1 more for every K of rep you get, I think.

11:10 PM
that is for the delete IIRC

such bug
must fix
plz no b0rked
wow

Q: The flag link doesn't like being clicked on and disappears

Doorknob of SnowI was strolling through the 10k queue today, and I happened upon a particular answer that was unworthy of existence. It was a disaster! Luckily, a noble "flag" link rushed up to save the day. I quickly clicked on it to flag as "Not an Answer," and it was all fine until then. Suddenly, suprised b...

@AnnaLear thanks!

You know, I'm laughing right now. I've not answered anything the past few days (4 days) and still gotten rep on all of them.
@LaszloPapp Just looked here, it's one flag for every 2K rep, not one as I thought.

OK
(not that I earned 4K today)

Heh, maybe someone just gave you a lot of bounties. :P
I wonder how much someone has gained per day with bounties + the bonus.

11:20 PM
that would nice without answers. :D
(hmm although they can give it anytime for even existing answers)
yeah, I would love to get 100K bounty from a high-rep user for a question. That would be fun.
500 is the max, btw?

@LaszloPapp yes, but technically you could award a 50, 100, 150, ... 500 all to the same answer :D

OK, 10x.

11:37 PM
@Bart got it

I'd like to hear the explanation of the two people who apparently don't want people to know why they're review-suspended :P
51
Q: Could we make the review-banned-by-a-mod notice say something more descriptive?

UndoSince we got minitech as a mod (yay!), lots of people have been getting review banned (and rightfully so). Many of these people come to Meta to complain/ask about it. When they do, they seem to be thrown off by the current reason that shows up: You have failed too many recent review audits, ...

Two downvotes? Weird...

Oh
@Undo vote trolls probably, or just random downvotes

11:55 PM
We have vote trolls?

Is it acceptable to ask SQL questions related to the data explorer on SO? Or is there someplace more appropriate?

@Undo we have all kinds of trolls, yeah

(and will I get yelled at for being absolutely incompetent when it comes to SQL?)

@jmac pure SQL questions better be posted on Stack Overflow
If you feel it's too trivial, ask it here :)

Thanks. It seems most of the low-hanging fruit already exists, so I'll utilize my google talents

11:58 PM
@TimStone how did you reply to yourself?

Well, I used the chat script specifically, but you can easily put in the ID manually.

@jmac Why would anyone want to reply to themself?
