@oded should https be respected when you login?

How do you mean?

when I start on https://meta/users/login should I endup after login on https//meta

I'M A TEAPOT!
Sorry, espresso kicked in.

I'm a dog.

@Duncan looks like your full name is also the name of a famous baseball player

2:07 PM
I see. I'm also a Welsh rugby captain and the son of David Bowie.
I get around.

@hichris123 I think I am going to keep this one as my "main" account. Not sure yet if I want to run experiment again in a different way.
Thyme will tell.

maybe next time you could maybe not fail by giving out your real account name
dirty failure
*tuts*

@qwertynl Sage advice, I'd say.

@ShadowWizard not really, we have no clue what happens around here, @TimPost can confirm

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a teapot.
NOW OFF WITH THEIR HEADS. brb, coffee
kawwwwwwwwwwwwfeeeeeeeeeeee!

2:10 PM
ding 91

Whoa, that was weird

@NickCraver well, at least you're here! So what about this?

Every message I tried to send in here gave me a parsererror

@TimPost Yea, it is all a bit choppy...

@ShadowWizard Hah, that's even weirder :P

2:11 PM
@ShadowWizard fix is in dev already, just not a pressing issue

Does the space get bigger when you do it more?

@Undo oh, didn't check it yet

wonders when beta sites will show up in SEDE so that I don't hammer the API
I have a PHP script designed to take all the comments from a site off the API :P
(and yes, I respect backoff)

@Undo possibly this week

Yay!

2:13 PM
@Undo nope, same space

the data is easy, just an import change, but it needs a homepage redesign since beta sites no longer have logos

huh
@NickCraver Doesn't the API return a logo?
I could have sworn it does

@NickCraver it's a spacing issue :P

@Undo pretty sure that's just the favicon

@TimPost Oh, huh.
Must have been a recent change?

2:15 PM
@ShadowWizard yeah, which is already in dev, but you boys keep on debugging if you want =P

@rene we want to end up on http after login

^ if you're curious

user202362
in dev is a rather ambiguous state ...

Yeah, the API returns the logo.

any shred of source code is welcome, thanks Nick! ;-)

2:16 PM
https://api.stackexchange.com/docs/info#filter=!9f*CwH4ke&site=space&run=true

@sudorm-rfTelkitty we only have one dev, and it's continuously integrated
@Undo oh hey thought we stopped generating those, hang on

@NickCraver I think telkitty thinks "in dev" literally as if a dev ate it :D

@oded that is for now I assume until https is fully supported?

We force https on the login/signup page, so instead of keeping everyone on https, we would rather force back to http after the process and let people choose.

@rene it'll be wherever you came from once it's supported, it'll still be optional
however, eventually all logged in traffic will be over https, hopefully - there are major hurdles

2:18 PM
Ok

Yay for https!

@Oded you here?

@ShadowWizard Still am

@Oded cool, can I bother you with something? There's this bug report which you once helped me with.... as it stands now it's not fixed
Can you please remove the ?

Done

2:22 PM
Thanks!

user202362
Ok, this is embarrassing ... my firefox keeps on closing itself every couple of hours and I don't know why, the antivirus/malware software I am using could not find anything either, what should I do?

user202362
@NickCraver but an item can stay in dev for an hour or 6 months

@sudorm-rfTelkitty feed it with chickens. fox love chickens

user202362
ice chicken 2 the firefox?

Log off and go outside @sudorm-rfTelkitty

2:33 PM
@sudorm-rfTelkitty no no no, ice will be no good. fire and ice means utter death. give it normal chicken, with feathers and everything

@sudorm-rfTelkitty no, it can't, we don't go 6 months without building

@NickCraver actually you do, in Data Explorer :)

@Duncan: aren't you Tim Duncan like the famous basketball player was?

Nope.

@ShadowWizard data explorer has no dev...

2:35 PM
@NickCraver oh, that's pity

@ShadowWizard: You can be a data explorer dev..
It is Open Source.
With Nick's name all over it..

@MartijnPieters Tim Stone already is, I won't steal his place ;)
@LaszloPapp Duncan is his first name

His last name starts with a "J"

So he's the DJ?

2:38 PM
@MartijnPieters yup, tms rulz!

Oh, right.

Tim, Sam, Nick, Oded. And Geoff Dalgas is not even listed on the contributors graphs.

@Oded God is a DJ!

Has anyone else got one of these cool desks that can pneumatically rise up to chest height for standing at work?

2:41 PM
@Oded lol

@Oded I am indeed a DJ. As is my son.

@Duncan pretty much all desk @ Stack Exchange are sit/stand desks.

@MartijnPieters probably because he never committed any changes?

@ShadowWizard: The main page says '5 contributors'; the first commit by Geoff is indeed a merge though.

Oh man, I'd love one of those. I'm at a table that comfortably rests on my knees.

2:42 PM
And for a brief period, I was actually a (music) DJ too.

@Duncan wow, that's cool... DJ who is a DJ

I was sorely tempted to be a geek and call myself "DJ squared" or something.
I resisted.

Nothing to do with YB

DJ²

@Oded Exactly. But that clashes a little with the "cool" image of a DJ.

2:44 PM
Too squared

@Duncan: apologies.

(Drunken hot chick) "So, what's with the little '2' there... can I come in the booth?" (Me) "Well, it reflects the fact that I'm DJ, and two DJ's are technically squared when combined in that fashion an- Hey! Where did you go?"

You sure have thought that through

So, @Duncan, this isn't you?

@ShadowWizard Thankfully not.

2:47 PM
@Undo check out data explorer

@Nick You're awesome :D

@Duncan well, you can call yourself "Duncan Jockey" ;)

@Oded Back in the day I never took a casual approach when it came to possibly scoring with hot drunk girls.

@Duncan that may have been a mistake ;)

2:49 PM
Perhaps :-) It worked well enough, then I was married off at 22 and it no longer matters!

Truth

Q: Beta sites should be in the Data Explorer

Mad ScientistThe Stack Exchange Data Explorer is a very nice and useful tool, but it has one very large drawback: Beta sites are not included at all. Excluding beta sites probably made a lot of sense when the beta phase was supposed to last only 90 days and when updates to the Data Explorer were performed ma...

For status-completeding goodness

@ShadowWizard haha oy...

Hmm, I somehow forgot I was in the process of making coffee. I should make coffee.

2:54 PM
@TimStone 2 sugar, lots of cream. thanks. :D

@ShadowWizard heh that's a SEDE bug with the & I imagine, will look after shower

@qwertynl can you summon your master to help rejecting it?
@NickCraver shower?! Oh well... :)
Wait, should I start bug report on Meta?

@ShadowWizard Master? Oh riiiight I told everone, yea one sec.

yeah us remote guys are't heathens, we bathe once a month

@NickCraver so on the 15th day of each month? Will keep that in mind!

2:57 PM
Done @ShadowWizard

@ShadowWizard payday, I can afford water again!
@TimStone if you get a chance to look before I do, will take a pull - have to move upstairs for Vs 2010 anyway (should upgrade it today)

@qwertynl thanks, one more is needed!

@ShadowWizard No prob bob

@NickCraver Ah, I've just been opening it in VS 2012 anyway, I committed the compatibility changes it made to the project. But yeah, will take a look here momentarily.
Dunno about 2013 because I don't have that installed

@Tim isn't there unique numerical ID for each site somewhere?
I see you're using the site names which lead to such encoding issues

3:01 PM
The problem is that the name that's used is terrible.
2
A: Add content for the URL data.stackexchange/sitename

Tim StoneThis makes a lot of sense, so now it's done pending a pull and redeploy of Data Explorer. I also added a redirect for the domain prefixes of each site, since some of the paths are kind of obnoxious to type. As an example, Database Administrators will now be accessible via /dba and /dba/queries b...

musical%20practice%20&%20performance%20meta%20stack%20exchange isn't that terrible ;)

Not that the redirect helps you here since the target is still broken, but switching to the shorter name will avoid these issues.

I am changing my name to Tom.
5

@TimPost Tom Post?

@TimPost I got four notifications earlier and wondered what the hell @Flyk was talking about.

3:03 PM
@TimPost Tom Pist?

user202362
Thomas Post

With a fixed length font, you did nothing

@Tim who got notified now?

Also need to work on the organization of the queries anyway, they're no longer per-site, so the setup doesn't make much sense.

3:03 PM
@TimStone Oh yeah, that reminds me, here are your messages and call your mother she said it's important.

@qwertynl The "nl" in your name makes me suspect you were snickering at that particular version of his name.

@Bart Oh ha ha ha. And NL is my initials :-)

Ah true. Well, it was funny to me at least. :D

By the way, why no diamond appear here on chat?

@ShadowWizard blue === diamond on chat.

3:05 PM
@qwertynl yup, takes time to adjust

@Bart I assumed as much :-P

@ShadowWizard The real problem is that there's an inconsistent use of ampersands and the word "and" in site titles.

Ah yes, blue on white. That famously wonderful colour combination.

@Duncan Shalom!

blames @Laura

3:06 PM
@TimStone agreed, but simple URL encoding will nullify this bug, isn't it?

Probably, I'm checking now

Laura?! Why?

Q: Standardizing & Simplifying SE Site Names

LauraNOTE: We're not going through and re-evaluating / changing every site name in the network. The guidelines below are what we will use for new sites created going forward, and if the community supports it, we'll be dropping the "& Usage" part of our language sites only. no other names for existing ...

@TimStone cool, totally missed it!
@qwertynl didn't you mean שלום? :D

@TimStone NO WAY! You just made me useless at work tomorrow.

3:09 PM
status-completed

status-productivity-drops-by-20-percent-in-western-japan
wait, why doesn't that turn in to a magic link?

Also blame Nick, I didn't actually do anything.
The percentage sign.

stupid %. First I find out too many magic links breaks comments (a bug existing since 2011!) and now this?

Diamonds, yay

status-unicorn

3:14 PM
@3ventic Where'd ya get that?

@jmac that's an easter egg, not magic link

magic link is [meta-tag:status-unicorn]

3:15 PM
@ShadowWizard no, it isn't.

@ShadowWizard yep :-)

@ShadowWizard It's not an encoding issue, by the way.

@TimStone still broken
@TimStone oh, so what is the bug?

& is not allowed in the path component of the URL with the default URL validation settings.

@TimStone but when encoded to %[something]?

3:18 PM
The validation is done on the interpreted URL, which is decoded.

@TimStone: What are the chances of being able to consolidate accounts?

On Data Explorer?

The only account that's not a Jon Doe is my MyOpenID url.

@3ventic lol that's really cool!

Which is now delegated to Stack Exchange.
But yes, on Data Explorer.

3:19 PM
Data Explorer has user merging, you just have to get someone with moderator powers to do it.

@TimStone oh, bummer... so how you're going to fix it?

You could post about it on Meta requesting it be done but there are a few pending requests already that haven't gotten resolved yet...

Why do I hear about MyOpenID only now?

Right, not holding my breath then.
looks hopeful at @Oded, @ThiefMaster and @Nick, all the same.

@3ventic it's featured on Meta for some days now

3:20 PM
@ShadowWizard I will probably just go ahead and make the change to use the correct name in the URL instead

Q: myOpenID shuts down February 1, 2014; add an alternative login method to your account

LauraJanrain has announced end of service for myOpenID, one of the many OpenID providers. MyOpenID will not be available starting February 1, 2014. (An earlier Twitter announcement from Janrain hinted at the same but did not set a date for end of service.) This decision was made by Janrain, and Sta...

Why was it big?

@ShadowWizard Sorry, I meant my personal domain OpenID, which used to be handled by MyOpenID.
openid.zopatista.com/someusername

@MartijnPieters Unfortunately even if I bribed my way to moderator powers on Data Explorer, user merging was taken away from network moderators because it can be dangerous, so I'd be obligated to wait for an employee anyway.

Well, at least with the new hardware my queries stopped timing out.
That's something at least..

3:24 PM
wonder if this user is already banned from suggesting edits meta.stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/23676

We'll have to wait for the meta post complaining about a ban @ShadowWizard.

@Bart only three rejected edits in the last 7 days so I fear he still can suggest edits. Oh well, let's hope we don't have robo approvers on Meta!

There are only robo-decliners on Meta. So all is well. :p

This debate over the new close reasons is fascinating. Never before have I trawled through such long comment threads, equally up-voting comments on both sides of the argument.
We are a lucky community to have so many articulate people who care so strongly about this stuff.

Q: How to support questions about development environments that rely on more than code alone?

BartGiven that most of my work currently revolves around Unity, I have recently become a bit more active in the unity3d tag. Most of the questions use some form of C#/UnityScript/Boo and are simple enough to answer. Problems arise when it's not necessarily a script that exhibits a problem. A lot ca...

^^^^ Does anyone have any clue why this, while getting plenty of upvotes, attracts no answers? Is something unclear? Difficult to answer perhaps? No conceivable solution? I can dump another bounty on it, but I'm not sure it would help.

3:35 PM
@Bart guess because nobody have a decent answer

Yeah, that's what I was thinking @ShadowWizard. Though usually that doesn't stop people on Meta from commenting/answering. ;)

@Bart Because you're a smart guy, did your research and still have a question. Thus the question is a hard one and less likely to get an answer!

That's it! No more research for me from now on!

wtf, I got a 404 on stackoverflow.com/users?tab=Reputation&filter=all all of a sudden.
Reload, 404 is gone
Someone is messing with the site somewhere.

@MartijnPieters aliens maybe?

3:41 PM
glares at @Oded and @Nick

@Nick is in shower
So we can rule him out

Guys, we're not cavemen. We have technology.
Jeff's fault. He came back just to troll you.

Wow someone is on a roll on SO, more than 400 daily rep for five days

Gordon?

3:43 PM
Yup

He goes on streaks like this from time to time.
I just sit back and wait it out..

new login on meta breaks if you choose wordpress, enter a user name with a space in it, click login, from the errorpage click back, choose blogger, enter name hit login, red box on the url input box saying `please enter a valid url '

@ShadowWizard Which Gordon?
NM, found him.

:)
He appears to be the Jon Skeet of SQL
Just less active

3:49 PM
I'd say Jon's the Gordon Linoff of C#.
Only more active.

@rene sounds like lots of work to break something :)

But then I am biased..

@MartijnPieters why so? friend of GL?

Hehe, no. It's a repeat of a joke in the Python room.
Swap Gordon's name for mine.

@ShadowWizard I'm only whitebox testing, and a normal user could do that...the error page is already changed so that helps...

3:51 PM
(not made by me, but since I am coopting it here, I guess I am guilty of a little narcism there).

4:20 PM
@sudorm-rfTelkitty yes. are you curious about something?

Is this a good candidate for the "typo and can't reproduce" closure reason?

Q: Decryption failed after compressing and encrypting file

user3198476So here is my problem: I'd like to compress (zip-algorithm), encrypt (AES) and finally save a binary-file twice on some place on the filesystem without storing any temporary file. The compression and encryption I think works so far, but I actually can't test it because decryption doesn't work. I'...

I think so and have voted accordingly, but welcome the feedback!
This suggested edit was doing really well until the final line. W... T.... F.... stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/3814690
It almost looks like an audit.
Never mind, it was an edit clash. That explains a lot!
Although... that question is very strange. For me it's still showing as last edit from Marriott81, yet the edit history disagrees. Can anyone else see that? stackoverflow.com/posts/21142584/revisions

@Duncan Yes. I see that default locale has edited the post, but the edit isn't applied.

I think that looks like a good use of the typo reason, @Duncan (to respond to your earlier chat message).

@Duncan +1 for the typo reason (I also vtc with the same reason)

4:40 PM
@NickCraver The easiest stopgap measure is probably to just update the sites table and replace & with and in Name. We could reconfigure requestPathInvalidCharacters too, but that doesn't seem as reasonable. I'm just going to fix all those URLs to use the more sane TinyName now anyway, but that will probably take a few hours between lunch/babby/testing since Name is used in a lot of places.
Oh, Eric is already trying to help, banging on my keyboard...heheh.

LOL
My cat does that. I've found that it rarely turns out to be useful input.

I tried to stop him but now he's eating my hand. He's determined to get those commits in, clearly.

@TimStone done, for future imports as well

Removed "too" because I felt like that sentence implied too much that babies == cats.
@TimStone Haha, man! That kid doesn't let up.
Then again, I just toss my cat onto the floor when she does that. Infants don't land on their feet nearly as well, I imagine.

@NickCraver Awesome, thanks! I'll have some more commits for you a bit later then, hopefully mommy should be home soon which will make typing a bit easier, heh.
@jadarnel27 I have a feeling I'd get in serious trouble if I found out so we'll just assume not.

4:48 PM
Haha, that's probably for the best.

@jadarnel27 He's probably ashamed of how long dad's todo list is.

5:00 PM
the intent 5k or 50k?

5k, so IE doesn't keel over

'sortable': rows.length <= 50000 should be 5000?
wasn't sure if there's a multiplier somewhere I'm unaware of

Oh O_o
Yes...The hell?

kk, just making sure

sec, will fix

5:03 PM
k, if you amend that one I'll pull in others first

Amended, thanks for catching that

<3
@TimStone unable to merge the asset manager changes, last one: github.com/StackExchange/StackExchange.DataExplorer/pull/18

Checking

@TimStone I expect his first pull request before his first birthday.

Ha, that was a temporary wtf. Just committed changes to what we internally have called the "asset manager" .....

5:10 PM
It's arrived! Thank you @danshapiro! Now I just have to wait for my little guy to have a few more birthdays... http://t.co/PRAmjjxUdY

@TimStone I'm raising the expectations bar. First birthday. Not "a few more birthdays".

I knew not to make any noise in my crib before 8:00 on the clock by my first birthday, so I'll see what we can do for him.

That last time I got a gift in the mail was when I figured out qwertynl was Neal, and he sent me a movie from my Amazon wishlist.
Which was really cool of him.

@jadarnel27 :-)
And now the world keeps on spinning
;-)

I should change my username to Stephen.

5:25 PM
@NickCraver I rebased and cleaned up, try again?

@TimStone good now, testing a deploy with internal SEDE as a sanity check for prod

Hooray! Thanks for pulling the changes. :D

no problemo, thanks for all the actual work :)

I have to be productive sometimes ;)

When browsing the flagging queue with the moderator tools, and I see x7 etc for the answer to be marked as NAA, does that number also include the 10K+ users' flag?

5:31 PM
we can try that @LaszloPapp if you like...
I assume yes btw...

ok.

Wow. All kinds of awesome things are happening with Data Explorer today.

like what...
It is interesting to see how high-rep users can provide very poor quality answers and questions.
wow, there is a 16 yo mod?

He was 15 when he was elected.

@TimStone you'll want to pull latest, deploying SEDE now
done

5:45 PM
Grabbed it

Love you @Pops :-)

@MartijnPieters: odd

Odd?
Some teenagers are more mature than others.

Yes, it is odd for me.

sorry @Tim
PING ALL THE TIMS

5:48 PM
@Tim ? I barely know him.

YOU RANG????

no I was after the other @Tim
obviously
;)

no, I mean in total.
one can draw 36.5K flags a year then.

@jadarnel27 Nah, change it to James
Anne @LaszloPapp? You mean Anna?

Actually, I cannot recall it, sorry... bad name memory. The community manager lady, that is.

6:21 PM
@AnnaLear ?

@Bart Changing my name to "James" seems really arbitrary.

.... brown

(I have a twin brother named Stephen, so life has taught me to respond to either name)
@Bart that's a good point.
Then again, being excessively mistaken for my brother significantly dropped after high school, since we went to different colleges.
Though whenever I went to visit him at college, I usually got greeted by at least two people that thought I was him while walking from my car to his dorm.

Ha, that sounds like my situation. I'm persistently mistaken for a loser. People yell it to me all the time.

Hahaha

I would expect the ones that haven't been edited to say "asked x ago."
