@Zoethetransgirl I'm at the point where I'm tempted to allow it as an in joke for that one user... but policies...
New idea: let duplicates of unfunny jokes sit there collecting downvotes, and just close them as duplicates of the FAQ or of some other instance of the same joke
New idea: Nuke it as R/A, and let the system auto-block further posts
@JohnDvorak Adult response: The FAQ, Right now me response: chain em together as long as you can go until gets to the FAQ
I had an Idea I wanna share. I think this can solve some problems: We can ask the staff one last time to let a meta regular visit the headquaters to represent us. A civlised talk face-to-face will help a lot
you really think there is one user that can represent us all?
1:12 PM
@rene insert LOTR joke
user194636
@weegee lol
@weegee there's usually very few people at HQ
@rene Not all of us but some major issues can be dealt with
Most folks who matter work remote
The staff can brief them later.
1:13 PM
I mean, literally no one who matters here is at HQ ;p
Then people who are at HQ can be made to matter >:)
Don't they discuss stuff like on skype?
Exactly
user194636
So who here has the power and bravery to close the official FAQ as a dupe of the better FAQ written by Gareth? 🙂
How much more questions will be posted? How many debates? Until something is actually concluded or decided?
@weegee never? ;p
More seriously...
there's just a lot of frustration out there
and a lot of folks just here for the drama
1:16 PM
I'm aware.
One person doesn't have to represent us all
So - I'd guess once a new equilibrium is established
One person has to go there and sort the major issues
@Aibobot We are waiting for it.
It's that simple
@weegee they know what the issues are
Of cource.
so what's the point?
1:19 PM
The point is to sort them out. Have a face-to-face conversation with people at HQ and think about what is to be done to keep both the sides happy.
To actually arrive at a conclusion
Not a debate, a discussion
@weegee what exactly makes a face to face more valuble here?
Instead of laying out points. Thinking about how this will be solved.
@weegee which to a large extent has been laid out
@Aibobot A face to face conversation is very different from posting questions, emails and other sources of media
folks kinda are aware where everyone stands
1:20 PM
And very efficient too.
@weegee you forget mods chat with employees too
I'm aware
heck some hang out here sometimes
That's not my point
I want a meta regular to go there and sit with people and discuss what is to be done. They'll have a voice from the community.
And then
The person will speak from the community basis
And the HQ people will speak from their basis
And then conclusions will be taken out
@weegee I like your optimisim
1:23 PM
If you see no point in going to HQ and just a email will do according to you then it's totally wrong
Let's say the company agreed to this. How do you choose a community representative?
Face to face conversation is totally different than other medias
@JohnDvorak That will be decided by the commuinty
I wouldn't mind a free trip to NY ;p
I'm just gonna say this again; this just causes more problems. For one, who goes? How do we know that person is willing to represent the community instead of working only their own angle?
@weegee a) you assume a willingness to talk, I'm not seeing that right now b) you assume HQ has any significance.
1:24 PM
@Mgetz I don't like his optimism. It reminds me of nice and positive and good attitude and . . . Yuck!
And if it's face to face, who pays? Will it impose country restrictions?
We'll post a question and choose some people. Community will vote who'll go
@M.A.R. we could use more optimism
@Zoethetransgirl crowdsource it :D
@weegee What protection is there against strategic voting that i.e. pushes all the openly vocal bigots into the group?
1:25 PM
Choosing who'll go is not a problem and please don't make it one. We can carefuly pick someone from the community
@Aibobot "Pay for my trip to go to SE" doesn't seem like it'll (snort) fly well
@Zoethetransgirl This has been a major concern of mine with the new CoC and FAQ
People will vote for the user who they think can represent the commnity really well.
And has laid valid points.
Who is most affected by the dispute.
We can send more than one user if people requests
/vote Zoe
2
1:27 PM
@Zoethetransgirl I am shocked, appalled and entirely approving of that joke ;p
I vote John
@weegee Right, so someone just states "I hate the change". Poof, they win, but actually hates the group it's intended to protect?
@Zoethetransgirl "I hate the change". Poof, they win We won't selected blindly
Not like we will just pick someone out
So, here's the thing Its less the change than the way the change was done
I think you're missing one crucial point: Criticism of the current CoC was mischaracterized as bigotry.
1:29 PM
@weegee You wanna bet?
Okay
I gtg for like 15 mins, but I'm not done with this yet.
You want a face-to-face interaction leading to a criticism of the current actions because how does that help things?
There's only one fair way to settle this:
The Thunderdome ;)
@M.A.R. I said civilised discussion.
1:30 PM
Trial by wombat?
@Zoethetransgirl ✊
If asking wrong questions got someone kicked out and repulsed lots of people, how do you see face to face debate? (sorry, non-native, no intent to offense anyone)
@Evil What?
@weegee You need two sides willing to listen. I used to think both did, I'm realizing one never did and the other is losing interest in lightning speeds.
@M.A.R. I'm trying to repair the communication
1:32 PM
People are losing hope, not interest
3
@weegee Well, I'm trying to understand your position. You're saying that online communication fell apart because communicating online is inferior to two faces facing each other, right?
@weegee the communication is absent, several harsh meta posts are heavily downvoted and misunderstood. I do not see any face to face conversation to be possible.
I'm aware everyone is loosing hope. inserts my journey on SO but it's not that anymore
And you'd be right, but that doesn't help anything because I think there's more to it than a failure of online communication
user194636
@JourneymanGeek @Aibobot Can you tell me who left this comment?
1:33 PM
@M.A.R. Negative. I never said that online communication fell. I said that this is the time we should drop it and talk face to face and solve the problem on the spot
@PaulWhite op of the question
@weegee Why would the outcome be different?
@Evil You can drop my idea if you think that further conversation cannot happen.
@Evil A lot of us here are nonnative English speakers :)
user194636
@JourneymanGeek Oh right thanks. Thought it might be a wag from my home site. Cheers.
1:35 PM
Especially @Journey. You can tell because he doesn't have apostrophe on his (their?) keyboard
"An apology to our community, and next steps" is no longer featured, so meta might calm down a bit.
@M.A.R. You know it. Face to face conversation is different than chat, email and comments. I don't have to explain much to it.
@M.A.R. you try typing with no opposable thumbs
@weegee Yes, that's what I said. The crux of your argument is that online communication failed because it's inferior to talking in person. And you're right.
user194636
@M.A.R. Pretty sure JG's pronoun is woof
1:37 PM
@M.A.R. Online communication failed in this condition. It's creating confusion and offending people because they aren't native.
@PaulWhite very much an old man dog. Tyvm
@weegee I'm saying you're oversimplifying the issue. It's not just that there's a misunderstanding. I believe at least some of the positions in power understand where each side stands and they're not willing to change their direction.
user194636
@JourneymanGeek Noted.
@JourneymanGeek Today your venom mustard?
@M.A.R. That's why my idea. If they aren't going to change their direction then we have to send a community member there to talk to them so they both can formulate decisions that are good for both the site and them.
1:40 PM
Thank you very much 🐶
This talk cannot happen on chat
. . . Oh. What the heck is wrong with TY. I mean, if you're intending to type something long, just tsl
@PM2Ring uhm
Sorry
1:41 PM
BBL
@M.A.R. Might be worth specifying the "all" in this context. Some of the criticism is exactly that, but it's far from all
@weegee There's hardly discussion now.
@Zoethetransgirl For me a lot of it is the manner of the changes
@Zoethetransgirl I've come here to change that fact
@weegee They can discuss with people for no additional expense online. What makes you think they're going to pay for travel so someone can talk face to face about stuff already being discussed and ignored online?
@Zoethetransgirl I'm not trying to send someone to talk about stuff that's already been discussed or are in questions/answers. I'm trying to send someone to have a civlilsed discussion so some conclusions can be taken out from them.
Which will benefit both the sides
1:48 PM
@weegee diplomacy only works when both sides are willing to talk
Also, you're assuming people don't talk
a lot of what we ended up getting involves folks talking
The community wants to talk, and some are tilting towards boycott/war. SE is standing idly by while the community discusses and turns on itself
@Mgetz yes that's why we'll ask them one last time
@Aibobot When did I?
@weegee "one last time" one last time?
How many times have we asked for communication now?
1:49 PM
@weegee all indications are that SE inc. is not interested in dialog at the moment, nor are some elements of the community
Also, no matter what agreement a face to face meeting achieves, some sections of the community will be unhappy with the outcome, for various reasons.
@Mgetz maybe they'll agree to this if we promise to not critise and to talk with the intent to take out actual conclusions
between the apologies and chat discussions everywhere and discussions off-site (twitter, anyone?), I'd be rich if I got a dollar for each.
@PM2Ring No why will they be?
@weegee Would you like the list?
1:51 PM
@weegee pardon my skepticism but that basically forces the community to not even bother. If someone is not going to listen to criticism then they might as well just admit bad faith and walk away.
If the CoC stands, someone will be unhappy that it is.
If it's altered, someone will be unhappy the pronoun clause isn't removed
if it's removed, someone will be unhappy that it is
@weegee Sorry, I don't understand that sentence.
There's no way to win 100%
^ that
^^^
1:52 PM
@Zoethetransgirl Yes so why all of this?
@weegee if there are only two people that are more or less on the same side, it is enough to left one unhappy with outcome of conversation. If there are more than two people, there is no way that everyone will be happy upon any agreement.
@Evil We cannot make everyone happy. Accept that
We can strive to make the majority happy
@weegee That could lead to some horrific outcomes, tyranny of the majority is generally a bad idea
@weegee Because we can still mitigate losses. Last time I got stats, 10% of moderator positions were vacant. We can still minimize it, find a middle ground between the two major sides
@PM2Ring Okay I agree with the part that I cannot make everyone happy. Some people will feel dissapointed on this so that means we should let it slide?
@Zoethetransgirl That's the intent of my idea. Find a middle ground between the two major sides and pick out conclusions.
1:55 PM
@weegee If that were true, well..
yes, but there's no way to win that with one representative
@Mgetz Let's think according to the situation .
@Zoethetransgirl Send two or more. I don't know I just introduced the concept to you guys
You need the entire community, compile concerns, risks, and advantages and modify the current problem source into something that still does exactly what SE intended it to, but with rules moderators can enforce, users can help with, and to something the opposition can handle
@Zoethetransgirl fully agree, and really do not see how out of the blue someone will talk with that representative, who still should be chosen somehow (which gets another group dynamics into voting mess?)
@weegee How do you guarantee all views are represented?
@Evil The voting introduces a lot of opinions too, and as a worst case scenario, all N representatives (provided a small enough value of N) can all have the same views
1:57 PM
@weegee No, we shouldn't let it slide. But I don't believe a face to face conference will be more successful than online forms of communication.
@Zoethetransgirl Are there really a vast varities of views?
Politics is, at the end of the day, saying things people want to hear to get where you want, then acting on what you want.
@Zoethetransgirl I do not foresee any form of change that would remove the clause
@weegee Yes
^^^^
1:58 PM
@weegee Yes, but there's nothing ensuring all of them are represented if the voting is broken enough
Once you make that kind of move there is no going back as a company. If they do that now they're going to be raked over the coals as capitulating to transphobia. That will never happen
@Magisch Me neither, it's an example.
@Aibobot Like? Are they really a issue? Or the issue that covers up majoritiy of users?
@weegee there's a whole spectrum of views
2:00 PM
We certainly don't want the tyranny of the majority. Trans people are in the minority, so should they just shut up to avoid upsetting the majority? No! But I agree that there's room to compromise on the CoC & FAQ a little, in order to make it easier for the people on the fence.
A lot of the issue is with the way the COC was passed down
But look at the votes; the current majority is against the CoC in some or another way. Play on that, get yourself voted to see SE, and ram the communications channel into the ground. That doesn't help anyone either
and its end results
@PM2Ring Sending someone who can represent most of the issues like the communication barrier and trans people's opinion and some other issues
There's probably a way to salvage the COC itself
2:02 PM
@Zoethetransgirl This is not what I meant.
@weegee no, but that's likely to happen
You cannot sum up my whole idea so vaguely into a comment and make everyone think so small of it.
At this point it might be better to (at least outwardly) scrap the CoC and start over, even if it means delays.
eh, not necessarily
Voting is just based on views presented during a process, and doesn't have to represent what will actually happen, or the actual views of the person
2:03 PM
You could get a few things people want in
and maybe retool the FAQ based on feedback
people feel consulted - and you get the stuff you missed from people
The major issues. That are making other's leave the site. That are making us feel bad about SO
but that again requires the base thing that inspired the representative thingy; we need working communication
Can every voice be heard? Not at all
That's where it stops no matter what angle you look at it
SE needs to make an effort too
3
@Zoethetransgirl So you think that working communication will come from online chat/voice/video?
user194636
2:06 PM
@Zoethetransgirl I'd be happier if they simply made fewer poor efforts at this point
No, I honestly don't care where it comes from. Like I said, SE needs to make an effort to communicate, and that kinda has to start online
@PaulWhite They're making a push for changes, not communication.
Any kind of communication will work out if there is a will from the both sides.
user194636
@Zoethetransgirl No kidding
Finally! I can post here! It took it long enough to refresh my Reputation score
And I gtg again apparently :] I'll brb
2:07 PM
but it's still not displaying my username, I'm nick012000
I'd really like to get my 100 Reputation back, and I'm not sure why it got deleted in the first place
People assumed it was posted in bad faith.
It wasn't though, it was a legitimate and earnest question
Even if it was meant well, it doesn't really benefit anything to keep it.
Yes, it does. It gives guidance on how to respond to those situations in the future. At most, it should have been closed for being a duplicate with a link to a relevant staff post
There was a rule that was unclear so I asked a Question that I thought would help clarify it. There's a reason why I gave it the "bug" tag
It's also possible, if it does get undeleted and closed, is that more people will find it and delete it again, complete with a fresh 100 point penalty.
2:14 PM
Won't I get the points back when it gets undeleted?
user194636
@nick012000 The 100 rep penalty is applied when a post attracts six rude/abuse flags from other users. You can appeal that by flagging the question for a moderator, explaining your reasoning. Or, if there is not enough space in the custom flag text, by contacting SE about it.
Isn't that what I'm doing now?
user194636
No this is an ordinary chat room. Click the link.
We are regular users. Not much we can do for you.
user194636
@nick012000 There's little chance of the question being undeleted I'd say. Even with extensive editing to remove the content people found objectionable, it would still be a duplicate without much added value to the site. Your best bet to get the rep penalty reversed is to contact SE to explain what happened. Hope that helps.
2:18 PM
I guess I'll do both
1 message moved to Trashcan
one to go
hmm persistent spammer
@Bart Gone
@nick012000 asked and answered. meta.stackexchange.com/a/334908/623776
2:29 PM
@DavidA Hence potentially closing it as a duplicate and linking to the relevant posts, rather than deleting as Rude/Abusive.
Though, come to think of it, that was an Answer being used to ask a Question, so maybe it should have been flagged and my Question should have been kept?
Meta is slightly different in that regard @nick012000. The question as an answer in that case is fine
@nick012000 It's an FAQ question, so the workflow seems to be a bit different.
@nick012000 if folks think its RA
its potentially RA
I think the question would be 'Why don't I know it is, and how can I do better?"
The answer to that is "Because I have autism", probably
So do I (to some extent). Makes me come across as dogmatic, insensitive, and weird. Eventually you get a feel for what annoys people, or you just disengage.
2:35 PM
@nick012000 We deal with a lot of folks with autism
Chatrooms and places like SE have historically felt almost like safe spaces for people with it. When people come along and bring corporate-style HR practices, things get interesting.
user194636
@Aibobot Where "deal with" means "encounter", not "punish".
@PaulWhite ... yes
I think the fact that you'd been having a wave of malicious posts that I was completely unaware of probably didn't help, and caused people to misclassify my post
user194636
2:40 PM
No doubt. Tensions are unusually high.
@nick012000 Meta's currently a bit of a hotbed of... stuff
If you're unaware of what's going on, this is roughly the worst time
@nick012000 Let's just say there's been a lot of stuff flagged in the last 2 weeks or so.
And those trigger fingers are probably a bit itchier than usual at the moment.
I knew about the Monica firing controversy, but I didn't know that there'd been a bunch of people posting malicious Questions
@DavidA oh, this was diiscussed earlier
So it was pretty directed and considered
user194636

Q: We need "assume good intent" back in the Code of Conduct

Journeyman GeekAT some point - "assume good intent" was removed from the COC It's a key pillar of the social contract and how we choose to deal with each other. It belongs in the Code of Conduct. PLEASE add this back. Its been brought up that I asked for this in the feedback for previous revision of the COC...

user194636
2:44 PM
Seems relevant somehow.
@nick012000 Unfortunately, that helicopter meme is strongly connected with anti-trans trolls, and it attracts them like a magnet. So even if you did post it in good faith, it was guaranteed that it would soon attract comments and answers that were openly hostile. So the question needed to be removed before things got too ugly.
@PaulWhite Well, I did initially
Enough to answer
user194636
@JourneymanGeek Yes I saw. It was a general thought, and an opportunity to plug your suggestion. Goodness everyone's so on edge. Shadows everywhere.
Yes it is
@JourneymanGeek You did Answer, and thank you for that! I probably would have Accepted BelovedFool's Answer after 24 hours, since he directly linked to relevant staff posts, but still!
2:51 PM
@nick012000 might want to use the contact us link as suggested. And see what @PM2Ring said
not much we can do
Yup, already have sent an email to SE using that link
Is Superuser one of the sites that's currently lacking a moderator, or is this level of spambot activity normal?
@nick012000 SU has a full compiment of mods
@nick012000 It's the same brand-new user going on a spamming spree.
spam happens. Smokey kinda acts as our second line of defence
"Eric B. Taylor"'s days are most likely numbered.
2:55 PM
y'all have a minute to get your spam flags in
They've got multiple accounts, I think. I've flagged like 8 of their posts and I think I've seen like 2 or 3 usernames posting them
not. any. more.
Tim
Tim
Can we get some undelete votes here meta.stackexchange.com/a/335181 - or are we unable to undelete a post removed by a mod?
I don't think this is spam / rude / abusive i.sstatic.net/UYD9i.png
@Tim I think shog knows what he's doing
Tim
Tim
I'm sure he knows what's he's doing. Strongly disagree that what he's doing is right.
3:03 PM
So... I'd say undeleting it is a very bad idea
It's a comment at best. I don't see any value in undeleting it.
it seems i got banned earlier for something and i'm completely unsure why :/ - obviously the ban has 'worn off' now, but i'm so confused.
If everything is just going to be 'assume the worst and flag' then chat is going to become a very very dead place, very fast.
And I'm even sure how I'd discuss with mods etc, what actually happened?
@djsmiley2k use the contact form. suspensions are not discussed in public. You know the drill.
@djsmiley2k I'd guess it was an automatic chat ban based on flags? Not sure. Things are a bit sensitive now though. But over time we'll probably be back to regular scheduled nonsense one way or another.
3:11 PM
@rene Infact I don't "know" the drill, hense asking. I mean, as long as someones not gonna look at it in the future and be like 'omg your so bad' (which tbh I don't see how they could based on the content) then I'll just forget it.
@djsmiley2k no mods at the moment
Maybe next week :/
@Bart I hope so. It's just horrible doing something and being like 'what did I even do?'
@djsmiley2k while you're suspended your profile has a link to the offending message history
@JourneymanGeek Ah there's no mods on the site anymre?
@OrangeDog yeah and..... i couldn't understand the problem with it.
@djsmiley2k mostly inactive
one was removed, one resigned, 2 more are... busy?
3:14 PM
I'm doing my best to be understanding and non-offensive in anyway, so to then go out, come back and find I had a ban while I was gone is kind of dishartening.
I discussed it with some 'other' people off the network, and they all came to the same conclusion "Whoever flagged it was deliberately doing so with the worst intentions around understanding what you said".
Anyway it's over now :/
Good!
Let's move on
And if I got banned now and dont agree at least I know about the contact us form!
I think you need to get a mod message if you get suspended though (I vaguely remember a mod saying it's not possible to bypass).
@Zoethetransgirl That's true for site suspensions, not chat suspensions, AFAIK.
oh, derp
missed that part :]
3:16 PM
urgh i'm so ded right now - I've had this stupid cold for around 4 weeks now. I'm hungover and dehydrated too.
Then go hydrate yourself with non-alcoholic fluids
got so many things I need to do, such as figuring out how to stack these guinea pig cages
... I ... wut?
Oh, I was going to say to take a Whiskey
@Bart i'm working on it..
hahaha
3:18 PM
I always assumed that Whiskey works for the hungover and the dehydration
@Bart Guinea pigs say woot woot. Are you sure you're not a guinea pig? :)
Yeah I got dinged for some message quite a while after sending it. By the "Feeds" user.
The Jim Beam is what caused this situation.
@rene keyword: for
lol
gatorade!
3:19 PM
I can't remember if it was here that I was discussing the fact that the two guinea pig cages inside, side by side are about 8ft long
@DavidA ah yes 'feeds deleted this'
@djsmiley2k Yes, it was here.
anyway realised I have a dry wood pallet in the garden. If the planks on that are long enough (i.e. longer than one side of the cage) I can take four of them and make a frame, and then stick some 'legs' on it
@Aibobot was tempted to pick up some lucozade
yup
FOr someone who dosen't drink, sometimes I have fun hangovers
lol
urgh i guess the flagging system in chat needs a major overhaul.
Chat has been abandoned for years
3:33 PM
@djsmiley2k you of all people whould know how broken chat flagging is ;p
yah :D
i guess upon flagging, it needs to tell the flagee, and the flagger needs to provide a reason which the flagee could then 'dispute'
@djsmiley2k that adds overhead
Let's not.
Can anyone send me the energy to go out and measure this guinea cage? :D
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ

3:50 PM
o_O
what caused a smokedetector post to get deleted?
The problem being resolved
Like the target being deleted
If that happens within the timeout for chat message deletion, it will get removed from here.
What glasses said
user384163
Would anyone be willing to help me flag these comments for removal one and two.
user384163
Besides being a bit unkind the fact that they are talking about pronouns on an answer that has nothing to do with such makes me think they targeted me for being who I am. Thanks.
@AGirlHasNoName those are gone.
user384163
3:57 PM
thank you!
@AGirlHasNoName The 1st seemed like they were trying to say "Hey, I'm LBGTQ+ too, but I feel harmed by the CoC, not protected". And that's a valid position, IMHO. OTOH, they undermined themself with that nonsense at the end of the 2nd one about pronouns being a made up problem.
user384163
@PM2Ring They also undermined themselves by intentionally mispelling LGBTQ
@AGirlHasNoName Perhaps, although I've seen LGBTQ people do that for humor. But that sort of humor can backfire if you aren't talking among a group of people that know each other fairly well.
user384163
@PM2Ring yes. It is less blatantly offensive all told
user384163
I wasn't going to flag it even until they added the second comment
user384163
4:10 PM
then I flagged both
Both gone
On your answer's theme of "Ask us", there's a soul song titled Respect from the 1960s by Otis Redding, also made famous by Aretha Franklin. In the chorus, it has the classic line: "R.E.S.P.E.C.T - Find out what it means to me"
@djsmiley2k you can also remove Smokey report manually by replying "gone" or "poof".
Think we all need....
@PM2Ring I had a friend who kept singing that as "R.S.P.C.E.C.T" and who really did not understand why we found that hilarious.
user384163
@PM2Ring Thank you. That is an excellent example
4:16 PM
Do we have stats which users got suspended/nuked during the recent drama?
I keep seeing "User removed" in recent days, but no idea which.
user384163
It hasn't affected me much. I guess the kind of people who are getting removed don't vote for me very often.
@Shadow You had the popular vote
@AGirlHasNoName probably
@rene :(
This whole mess is a bit interesting to watch from the perspective of someone who is decidedly not a social progressive, but just wants to help people anyway.
@Bart :) An Australian variation: "RSPCA, find out what it means today". :D
@AGirlHasNoName Here's something a little more recent, to help soothe the frazzled emotions: Protection, by Massive Attack, featuring Tracey Thorn.
@Sklivvz this... should be a meta post :D
@Sklivvz too simple
Not enough drama.
Also it doesn't justify FTE positions that way.
user384163
@PM2Ring I Am Her, by Shea Diamond has been a goto for me for inspiration and strength
FTE?
4:34 PM

Full time equivalent/employee positions
@AGirlHasNoName Funky!
ouch
At least it's not a programming question

user384163
At least it has nothing to do with pronouns
user384163
I almost upvoted for that alone
