booo!

@JourneymanGeek Empty

There is no cow?

Don't have a cow man.

(there is no cow. He passed away :( )

oh, there is a cow. Look, it is sleeping.
... or maybe that's a sheep.

@Derpy le petit prince?

oh! Seems I just found how to annoy the room today :P

Is that today? :D
Thanks, I almost missed it :)

YARRRRRR!

Baaaaaarrrrrrrrk?

8:13 AM
Glassssssss... crap

._. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/315623/… the spelling they have used for avatar seems odd but spellcheck dosen't catch it

@JourneymanGeek It is supposed to be avatar. Grammarly picks it up ;)

Eugh, I get so many Grammarly adverts on youtube :P

(and yes, I do actually rely on spellcheck on my browser ;) )

8:22 AM
Apparently it's an obsolete spelling of avatar. TIL.

from a dodgy dictonary?
but that might explain it
I wonder if its a correct spelling in another language too

@Henders I quite like it :)

@JourneymanGeek by Edgar Allan Poe ._.

@Somewhat In that case Nevermore

avatARRRRRR

8:27 AM
Guys? I need an independent panel of internet critics. Can I borrow you all for a minute?

No.
(Yes)

@Tinkeringbell not many places more criticy

Sorry, I was getting my critical face on.

@JourneymanGeek I wonder if they'll put a new cow there

8:28 AM
Parents are gone for the week, and they send us a little clip yesterday. My brother and I both edited it, but now we're arguing which is more funny and which we should send: imgur.com/gtv2b4j or imgur.com/U4Gsva9 (make sure to turn on sound)

@Magisch no

@JourneymanGeek They could put a whole herd

@Tinkeringbell I liked the second one more
@Magisch not likely to happen

@JourneymanGeek (YESS!) :P
You choose wisely ;)

no one knows how they cow got there and no one really wanted to move him, or know what to do

8:31 AM
(When someone CVs a question as off-topic for beloging to a different SE and another person CVs for blantly off-topic and the question gets closed for either of the reasons, will the other flag be declined?) owo

@Tinkeringbell the first one makes fun of the person. The second is properly absurd ;)
@RaisingthePraisingAgent 0_0

@Tinkeringbell fwiw I had to laugh at both.

@RaisingthePraisingAgent CVs are cumilative

@JourneymanGeek This is the tavern on the meta, I thought people here will know lol

so if you close for different reasons its still closed.

8:32 AM
And the flag therefore helpful?

@JourneymanGeek Do you know the music? It's a very Dutch thing, called 'draaiorgel' upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7b/… where you turn the wheel and get music ;)

I don't actually remember what happens with the flag

@Tinkeringbell Second one was way better

@Tinkeringbell as someone vaguely culturally anglosaxon I was assuming the monkey with the barrel organ

@RaisingthePraisingAgent if I'm not mistaken it's automatically marked as helpful

8:33 AM
(also, this would be a great question for meta?)

@JourneymanGeek Oh, no. No monkeys involved ;)

I think the flag will be considered helpful as long as the question gets closed?

Q: Don't auto dismiss custom flags on close

CodesInChaosI understand auto-dismissing off-topic flags as helpful on close, since those become obsolete. But for custom flags that's rather annoying, since those are often used for an issue that goes beyond closing. In my case it's typically a migration or merge request. What's particularly bad about thi...

The effect, and why that was not always desirable.

or zat ;)

@Somewhat I hope so, but wasn't sure

8:35 AM
I had an incident with a cow when I was really young. I got up to one with really long horns and moved my head close to its head. Naturally, it moved its head, striking me with its horn. I had to be taken to the hospital.

Cows are great though. They're pretty much big dogs who often don't realize they're huge.

This was in India, where cows just randomly walk around everywhere.

Apparently the Cow swam over from malaysia - but no one actually knew where he was from
@Bart quite often ;)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Scary :o

8:36 AM
I don't like having to walk through cow fields

@Somewhat Tucows?

Tucows also, but that's old... and I'm old

@Bart Many more stray dogs wander across the streets than cows.

They're still around
I think they were actually my dad's old domain registar, indirectly

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog sounds freaky
Like a stray cat, stray cow
and then people don't kill or capture it because it's holy

8:38 AM
@Magisch in india, basically cows wonder around and forage
they're mostly harmless, as far as a one tonne horned animal can be ;)

I do wonder does the indian "no eating cow meat" extend to cow milk?

@Magisch no
Actually cow's milk is the only animal product that indians consider vegitarian

@Tinkeringbell I like the second one better

@Magisch also cows are pretty smart
my granma's neighbour had a old bull

@JourneymanGeek I guess that's why Indians aren't usually lactose intolerant

8:41 AM
What do people do in india when cows die of old age. Is the meat not used?

he's get his owner to harness him up so he can go walkies. (and stop by places where they'd give him treats)

Are they buried?

@Magisch well no - and it depends
traditionally they kinda have cow retirement homes

My dad was commenting about how cows that perch in the middle of the road act like "free traffic control"

...... ok, I think it is time to stop the cow meme - and I know just the right thing that can give them enough of a trauma to forget cows for a while....

8:41 AM
but only hindus consider cows holy so... some other religious groups have less issues with eating them or killing them.

@Derpy ... uhoh

(also I have no idea what they do to cows that die of old age, not sure how I'd ask the older people ;) )

The official U.S. government site that advises people who travel abroad has an interesting tidbit on its page on India. It says that if you hit a cow with a car, you can start a riot, and it recommends driving away from the situation to the nearest police station

Have fun. This video was originally shown me by a co-worker.
Should be enough to make you forget cows for a while...

IMO, There is actually no need of editing an old question which asks for user deletion when the user is already deleted.

8:44 AM
makes sense.

I take no responsibility for side effect like nightmares and such.

@Magisch I'd almost assume that its ok to skin them post natural death, but....
no one ever talks about it
Also people use leather products and I can't really think of what else they'd use

@JourneymanGeek Isn't killing cows illegal in india?

@Magisch not really
So, one of the quirks of india is its officially secular

Not sure I'd feel comfortable opening a beef ranch in india
2
seems like it'd be vandalized

8:46 AM
Oh, you might get lynched
but its legal
ugh, my friend actually linked me an article that I hated on people who eat beef in india

very reassuring
@JourneymanGeek hm?

@Magisch In India??

It was well written, but by an organisation that dislikes my folks and had some bits there that ...
hmm how would I put it
(I read it once, read it twice, and then started to tear it apart lol)
she was a little worried I got upset lol

@Derpy from the thumbnail, I almost expected "Badger Badger Badger" instead

I wonder how worshipping cows came to be

8:51 AM
thehindu.com/thread/arts-culture-society/article7832539.ece @Magisch its worth noting the person who wrote it is a member of a party that historically wanted my people wiped out, and tries to draw a line between local faith structures and the broader hindu "orthodoxy"
@Magisch they're more useful alive than dead

worshipping trees? or nature? Animism?

living cattle provide milk, more cows, a organic tractor ....
There's more complicated folklore but I think its that simple

@AnneDaunted just out of curiosity, what is your selection criteria to choose which posts to edit? Is this the score -13 batch?

@rene does Anne hang out here?
Guess so

I had cousins from India visit me, and they were fully vegan, not eating products containing eggs.

9:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek they were pingable so I gave it a try

@rene Strange, I found that they're not pingable here, did you also invite them?

@rene ah, I guess so
I checked after I asked

whatever. It is not life threatening if there is no response.

Never mind, just caching, they showed up as pingable after a page refresh

also lol I got curious, dug around the site and nuked two OT posts that were at 2 delete posts

9:10 AM
I am using a filter for posts only from one week after looking at these edits.

9:22 AM
Since today is the next batch for SENT (Stack Exchange New Themes)... expect more grumpy users :)

I wonder if the welcoming initiative has made a dent in the user attrition rate
Was re-reading tims post about SO's attrition and wondered if there's been any change

9:50 AM
One would hope so
I still feel that the more active measures proposed - like the new user templates would probably help.

I'm just wondering because all we've seen is the internal side of the initiative. Like the meta wars and discussion threads. It'd be interesting to see if anything changed externally, i.E if SO is actually more welcoming now.

It's so welcoming now that users are fleeing because they assume we must be a cult.

@Magisch I should ask my cousin
he's a lurker

Is there an SE site that's like superuser.com but includes questions about mobile phones?

9:59 AM
errrr
Android and Apple se?

@b_jonas looks like XY problem...

@JourneymanGeek Hmm. What if my phone is neither Android nor Apple?

Oh, the general mobile site? no.

What sorta phone?
There's also a windows mobile site
but ... I don't think anyone would have one of those

@JourneymanGeek Nokia feature phone. I can tell how I can decode and encode VCF contact list files that I can save and restore on the phone from the phone memory to SD card. And right now I'm chatting with Nokia support to find out why I can't restore from VFC on Nokia 150.

10:01 AM
.... 150?
maaaan
No, no really good site for that

They can't help.

Ya, no good SE site for that

@JourneymanGeek I tried to search on Google. I found a webpage that tried to give an answer, but it doesn't actually work on my Nokia 150. Maybe I need a different firmware, but I don't know how to install one.

or different VCF version?

not really much use installing different firmware on a feature phone
can you get the file out?
and what're you trying to do actually
read it?

@Somewhat I can't even find a menu entry anywhere to restore in my 150. There is a menu entry in the 216 (older phone).

On my mom's E71, the contact list was a text file
ohhhhh

I can read and write the VCF file, yes, I figured that out for the Nokia 216.

sorry dude. Pretty much out of luck as far as SE goes

I haven't tried saving a contacts file on the 150 yet. There's a menu entry, but because I haven't entered contacts yet, I haven't tried. Now I'm going to try to transfer some phone numbers on a SIM card, but I need to exclude some numbers for that because my contacts list is just over the limit of 250 entries for the SIM card.

10:07 AM
hmmm
this sounds logical

Oh, and I mustn't forget to reset the time after that. Because I have to remove the battery to change the SIM, and the phone clock on the 216 doesn't run while the battery is off.
@JourneymanGeek That's for Nokia 130. My newer phone is Nokia 150. Not the same model.

@b_jonas the process might be similar?

IDK, its a fairly quick thing to try

10:09 AM
@Somewhat I found a different website saying that, but the Contacts folder only has a "Backup" entry, and that says my phonebook is empty. It doesn't offer me to restore.

@b_jonas its about the same era and might have the same OS
so
> Enter: Contacts -> Settings -> Restore contacts (this option is not visible if the phone does not find backup.dat!)
makes sense...
soooo

@JourneymanGeek Yes, and so is the 216. The 130 is between the 216 and the 150. But the 216 and 150 was made by a different manufacturer than the 150, even though they look similar outside and in the firmware.

I mean "It didn't work" is different from "It won't/cannot work cause its the exact same model"
@b_jonas have you tried it? ;)

@JourneymanGeek Then I might have put the backup.dat in the wrnog directory.

this is possible

@Somewhat I found a different website saying that, but the Contacts folder only has a "Backup" entry, and that says my phonebook is empty. It doesn't offer me to restore.

hm
why not add a dummy phone number, backup, see where it backs up....

I'll have to double-check if the directory and filename "Backup\backup.dat" is the same as what the 216 saves though.

bongi!

@JourneymanGeek Yes, I'll try that, except I'll transfer phone numbers through SIM card instead of entering them.

10:16 AM
Then even if the full transfer fails, I'll have my more important contacts on the 150 (which is the spare phone I want to have ready any time the 216 is stolen or broken) even if I can't figure out the VCF restore.
Give me some time, I have some other things to do.
What makes this harder is that the 150 doesn't even have a file browser, so I can only directly see the file system through USB as external disk or by removing the SD card.
The older 216 at least has a file browser.
It seems like a downgrade to a newer model for the same price so far.
Mind you, the 216 is already terrible.
In many ways.
I don't recommend buying either.
It's obvious that even they are ashamed of the line: they don't tell the model number anywhere, neither under the battery nor in the menu somewhere, so you can't write bad reviews so easily.
It only says "Nokia".

No, KIA :(

10:33 AM
The strange thing is that I also don't find the setting in the Nokia 150 to make the contact list display only the contacts in phone memory, only in SIM1, only on SIM2.

I'm afraid we can't help more than this though...

@Somewhat No problem, I can look around on websites other than SE.

I was also surprised by that. But the more surprising thing is, I failed to find which OS they use...

@JourneymanGeek The 150 is a HMD phone, the 216 is an MS phone.

Also... wait, there are two different phones called "Nokia 130" from the same series?
strange

10:51 AM
@b_jonas could be Ms or stump Nokia designed still

How are they reusing numbers so quickly?
Can't they find a new number?

:)
3310…
There's actually 2 or 3 different models of that
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_3310_(2017) 3 versions with different oses

What a clusterchuckle :p

In case it matters, both my 216 and the 130 are the dual sim variants.

If it can be of any relief... other companies sometimes aren't much better.

11:05 AM
@Derpy That's why I didn't spend time to read reviews of phones by other companies to potentially find a better phone.
I just bought the newest one from the only Nokia series with a non-flat keypad for myself.

I have lost a day trying to understand why an Asus modem/router wasn't working... only to discover that after the last firmware update... pressing reset for 5 seconds no longer does reset the router.
Now you have to press the WPS button.

(For my grandmother, I bought a non-Nokia, one with a large but low res display and large buttons.)
@Derpy How about holding down the reset button for 90 seconds, of which the middle 30 seconds you pull the power cord off, but the first 30 and last 30 seconds you have the power cord on? That's pretty much a universal recommendation for routers with a reset button, since they check the reset button at different times.

the 30-30-30 procedure. Yep, doesn't work.
They changed the button.

Ouch.

11:09 AM
Have discovered it because some newer models use the WPS button for reset, while the reset button is only used to enter "restore mode"

@b_jonas Only needs to be done for 10 seconds, I did that when hacking my TM-AC1900U into a RT-AC68U

and that game me the idea... "what if they had the brilliant idea of updating the firmware to the new standard WITHOUT TELLING IT TO THE USER?"

@Derpy But why is the new standard making the reset button not work, on a device that has a reset button?

@b_jonas Because in the secret Asus language, "reset" means "keep pressed to enter restore mode" and "WPS" means "keep pressed to reset".
or at least this is my current deduction

11:14 AM
Hmm. I transferred contacts via SIM card, then backed them up, and yes, now there is a "Restore Contacts" menu item.

Now I'll check the file system to see where it put that, and in what format.
But hiding a menu entry like that is a stupid interface.
It should always show the menu entry, and give a sensible error message if I run it and there's no file.
Also, I still don't see a menu entry to make the contact list show entries only from phone memory, not from SIM, and that would make the contact list very annoying to use.

I want to have at least some phone numbers on the SIM card as backup in case the phone is broken but the SIM isn't lost and I try to make a phone call with a phone I haven't configured.
Sure, I also have other backup options, but still.
Ah.
Backup filename is "/backup.dat", not "/Backup/backup.dat". Ok.
Let me try to move the real backup there and restore.
Copying files to SD card in phone through USB is slow, but for small files like this it doesn't matter, and for large files I can use an SD card reader.

oh, nice. Playstation Mini coming out 3 December

11:24 AM
Ok, let's see what happens.
"264 contacts restored" it says
Yup, seems to have restored every contact. If only I could hide the contacts on SIM1.

If you have a blog. You should document this :)

@JourneymanGeek Thanks for the hint.
Contacts transferred, so spare phone is basically ready to use. I'll obviously re-transfer the latest contact file and recharge the battery occasionally or when my current primary phone breaks.
(The current primary phone is the previous spare phone. The phone before that was much better in most respects, despite being older.)
(Admittedly that one cost somewhat more second-hand than any of these cost new.)

@b_jonas just curious - why the feature phone?

12:10 PM
@rene Yes, to some extent. Is this annoying? Shall I stop it?
Tim, I hope you don't mind my small edits to your posts lately

@AnneDaunted just to say - those sort of edits on my recent questions are welcome and I'll accept any suggested edits of the sort you do.

Thanks, Journeyman! I already wondered if it was not maybe too much or you felt targeted

@JourneymanGeek FYI Anne now has binding edit privileges
@AnneDaunted I think he's been feeling targeted for edits for quite a while

Oh. The it's/its issue is something that is really hard for me to catch and and I am fine with it

@Tinkeringbell Dr Tinkeringbell, PhD Interpersonal Relations

12:54 PM
I'm just googling ;)
Really. I feel overvalued right now ;)

@AnneDaunted maybe but it was as much the term help vampire as anything
Thing is on the main sites, there's kind of an immune system for those

@JourneymanGeek Multiple reasons. 1. I already spend too much time configuring my computers at home and work, and online chatting and all other stuff like that. If I bought a smartphone, then I'd spend even more time with that sort of thing.

So most of the examples that came to mind we're chat
@b_jonas ah. Good enough

2. That calls into: I don't like Android, at least as it currently is. Often full of security bugs, because phone manufacturers don't push updates from upstream and add their own custom buggy software. 3. I also don't like the interface of Android (and Windows phone), where you can change config settings with one accidental touch and you'll have no confirm or cancel buttons and no way to tell what you changed.

1:03 PM
Eh. Also true
@AnneDaunted that's a little lost and maybe I can be clearer about that

4. I want a phone with a non-flat keypad so I can type without constantly looking at the screen, and feel where each of the buttons are. Sadly now even most feature phones have a flat keypad, which is harder to use. I don't know why that is. And the few that have a non-flat keypad suck. My old Nokia feature phone was much better all around.
Previous mobile phone was Nokia 6303c, I bought it second-hand because it was already out of the market by the time I bought it. Pretty good phone.
Nokia doesn't make phones like that anymore, sadly.

user194636
I was surprised how well a swipe keyboard worked for me.

@b_jonas heh, those things ALL make sense

@AnneDaunted It makes the active tab a bit noisy for me but if I know it is based on score I can quickly skim and skip those initially and revisit if I see fit. No need to stop for me.

@JourneymanGeek For some people. I can understand why some other people want a smartphone.

1:16 PM
yup

Also, 5. I can get out much easier if my mother asks for help fixing his Android phone.

snort
I CAN TOTALLY RELATE TO THAT

(For this you need to know the context that my brother is an Android phone geek, so he helps a lot in that. Meanwhile I can help a bit in his Windows PC, but leave most of it to my father.)

I fix everything at home ;p
(computers,... plumbing...)

@rene Sorry, I didn't know that they would show up in the active tab. They don't show up in mine.

1:22 PM
I mean, come on, the photos he takes with his own phone camera get added to the same shared drive (Google Drive or MS OneDrive, I'm not sure) as the photos he receives from other people through Viber or whatever other message app that is. They're totally mixed with no easy way to group them. I tried to find his own camera's photos by image metadata once, which should work in theory, but failed for some reason, I lost my patience and gave up before I figured out why.
And she has a ton of both of those kinds of photos, and most of the photos she makes are terrible.
So obviously I asked my brother before I tried the image metadata thing. He said afahk there was no easy way to just tell one of those apps to put them in different directories.

@AnneDaunted Oh, that is strange. I just checked in incognito and I see them here (scroll a bit down).

well, android has auto backup that's a bit odd

@rene I guess I know why - I'm on "Top Questions" (burger menu -> "Home") while your link is to "All Questions" (burger menu -> "Questions")

@AnneDaunted Yes, you're right. That view doesn't show the posts that you recently touched. So for visitors that land there it will be ok and also for users that look at the newest tab. Only those few fanatics that want to keep an eye on each and every edit have to adjust a bit ;) ... I'll manage.

1:35 PM
No, you needn't to. I'm really sorry about that. I will be less ... enthusiastic in the future

@b_jonas On older IPhone / IPad models, deleted pictures aren't deleted. They are logically deleted, but still on the phone.

@AnneDaunted It makes me sad if I have reduced your enthusiasm :( that was not my intent

What is even more interesting is that while browsing a gallery the images are given a sort of "static" index that is kept even when the image is deleted.

Oh no, don't feel saddened!

1:43 PM
Ok

It's good that you told me. My intention was never to flood the whole tab with it

so, suppose you have Img A and Img B. You delete Img B and add ImgC. Now, when you browse to ImgC the phone displays ImgB too, underside ImgC.
for the finishing touch.... now suppose ImgC is a transparent gif....
Couldn't find a more technical article link, sorry.
