Q: Why won't clang compile this source code that works in VS2012?

Sod AlmightyI don't know if I'm doing something wrong here, but I can't for the life of me get clang to compile existing code that compiles fine in VS2012. Includes like strsafe.h and xstring cause weird compilation errors, the strangest of which is a "missing close bracket" in the middle of a standard incl...

A: Question quality is dropping on Stack Overflow

I'm willing to repeat an unpopular view here: We need to stop rewarding answers to bad questions if we want to stop bad questions. Many bad questions on this site get good or mediocre ...

If I got a cent for every time I would have flagged as "Suspected rep whoring" (tho I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist), I would have more cents than all the rep of the rep whores! — bjb568 May 20 at 3:06
@bjb568 Weird, right? Probably a tone thing, both the mood the question put the readers in and the tone of the answer.
7:41 PM
I feel like every question downvote should be -5 for the asker and all answerers.
@bjb568 Only if you get +5 for every upvote on that same question
@bjb568 sigh I wish there was an 'unclear what to close as' close reason. :P
@Sumurai8 Why?
@hichris123 No repro info, unclear or seeking debugging help.
@hichris123 I know they've been really locking us in by getting rid of all the cool vague ones I used to abuse the heck out of. "Too localized" and "lacks minimal understanding" were always good shotguns.
@bjb568 It looks more like a browser bug, though.
7:46 PM
@bjb568 For the same reason you want to subtract rep for answering bad questions. Don't you also want to reward people for answering good questions? Anyways it would all be weird on metas, too.
@hichris123 Which is also off-topic as not about programming (other).
@JasonC 'abuse' is definitely good.
@bjb568 Yeah...
@hichris123 Abuse is great!! Also I was being facetious.
My farts smell like chili.
ooh, another good close reason! 'too lazy to write a custom close reason'
7:47 PM
@hichris123 "Questions about general computing hardware / software" would be appropriate for that one.
@JasonC Closed as 'I'm abusing a close reason' by Jason C
@hichris123 There should be a "this is crap" button that deletes it right away without a close reason.
@bjb568 Dude; haha, hold on...
@bjb568 Because the type of questions I usually answer are answerable (otherwise I wouldn't be able to answer them), but people tend to leave a downvote anyway because it is .htaccess (herp derp go to serverfault to be closed as offtopic there herp derp and I have no clue what this question is about herp derp). I find that people are sometimes short-sighted with their votes, and unless there is a string of downvotes or a string of upvotes, a vote means nothing.
Gah, I really should be working...
7:48 PM
This question appears to be off-topic. Not sure why, but it clearly sucks.
@Sumurai8 How about you get min(0, score * 5) rep?
@bjb568 Just read the transcript starting from chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/2263080#2263080 -- it's too bad that Avinash dude's meta post asking about where the "extended close reasons" were ended up deleted.
@hichris123 Sunday?
@bjb568 "Working" as in doing stuff that I should be doing, not chatting. :P
@hichris123 But chatting is fun.

Jeff Atwood on November 23, 2010

Over the last 2.5 years, we’ve identified a few problematic classes of questions that tend to get asked on our sites. Many of these are documented in our standard set of close reasons: exact duplicate, off-topic, subjective and argumentative, not a real question, and too localized.

However, as we launched the great Super User experiment, a new, previously unknown class of problematic questions emerged — the shopping recommendation.

That is, on Super User we began encountering questions like: …

I noticed that the Stack Overflow question Strangest language feature has been closed and reopened several times now. The text of the question is brief:

What is in your opinion the most surprising, weird, strange or really “WTF” language feature you have encountered?

I agree this is not exactly an ideal question for Stack Overflow, per the FAQ:

Avoid asking questions that are subjective, argumentative, or require extended discussion. This is not a discussion board, this is a place for questions that can be answered! …

You could tally their total upvotes and downvotes across questions I guess, but I wonder if the number of questions should be a factor (or if number of votes implicitly represents that more accurately)
I guess it's total "controversy" vs. average "controversy per question" - and thinking out loud, the former probably makes more sense.

8:18 PM
Uh… so if something is VLQ and is flagged as such, it'll get approved. Unless a mod comes and declines it? That makes no sense.
Still kinda confusing, but it's the best way I could think of to word it.
@bjb568 Because of the LQP queue. But, you should not be flagging questions as VLQ that you can VTC.
the funny thing is that even when the flag gets approved via VLQ queue, it doesn't get deleted
@hichris123 I can VTC any question I want, remove the flag type?
Yeah, since you can't delete questions from the LQP queue.
@bjb568 ?
@hichris123 "But, you should not be flagging questions as VLQ that you can VTC." That means I can never flag VLQ.
8:21 PM
The academia page header reminds me of one of those goofy Japanese high-school-dating video games for some reason.
@bjb568 on questions, you rarely should be flagging VLQ. Unless it's like abcdefh ihaewkloi wetapajtpw;t waet I'm testing. weatojepwatiphwate.
A: Is the Very Low Quality flag too ambiguous?

Jeff AtwoodVLQ means the flagger thinks this post is beyond saving -- no amount of editing or polishing will turn this particular turd into gold. It is a call for a pooper-scooper. To clarify this, we are making the language a bit stronger: very low quality This question/answer has severe formattin...

@hichris123 Uh… so why does the queue and the reviewers of the queue go totally against that view?
"Essentially this is synonymous with flag for removal. Both for the post and implicitly for the user who created that post … if they accrue enough of them." That's what I mean.
@bjb568 You're mixing up two things. The LQP queue is not just VLQ flags, it also includes automatically detected low quality posts.
Whatever. VLQ means the post is crap. LQRQ deals with it and approves the flag if it is crap. Closing (including without a mod) also approves the flag.
There is no evidence in the system or the users of the LQRQ (who delete the crap instead of declining the flags because it "wasn't bad enough") that you should use VLQ sparingly. If it's crap, VLQ.
Also, Jeffs answer backs that up.
8:28 PM
A: Am I misusing the "Very Low Quality" flag?

Shog9Use VLQ for obvious, unarguable garbage. Regardless of whether or not it ends up in /review or the mod queue (and most of the time, it'll end up in both at least for a little while...) VLQ flags on questions that should be closed just create unnecessary overhead - someone else has to spend more...

@hichris123 Ok, but it's there now and there's a usage for them that the 1% of mod cases shouldn't interfere with.
