@mootinator Let's go on Physics and start a revolution!

@Moshe Yeah, we'll disprove the theory of relativity!

@mootinator Er, no, i liked the old theme.

@Moshe The theory is wrong, all the methods which have been used to verify it use flawed measurements.
@Moshe Oh sure, we'll start with the theme.
Then we'll attack PHYSICS ITSELF.
Too much?
Fine.
Back to testing boring code.

8:36 PM
While you're testing wanna test my UI?

Sure, why not.

@KlausByskovHoffmann I appreciate the sentiment, but I know that I will use one, even if I use it to passively create (that GarageBand looked like I could finally learn to play an instrument, or at least create music, in my passive time) and passively consume. But I'll use it for things like the TV guide as well, and such, sufficiently that it will become a frequent use item for me. And if I always have it, she'll want to use hers too, but probably not as much as I do.

@drachenstern you know best what is best for you :-)

@KlausByskovHoffmann pretty much ;)

What is a good lightweight text editor for mac? Kinda like notepad++ for windows?
@GarageBand is on the MBP too though and with a cheap midi controller it is a really fun toy

8:49 PM
So you want me to use a laptop (2 feet away) with a keyboard (exceptionally artifical interface) and an external midi device (still artificial interface, unless you mean getting the instrument, which is the whole avoidance here) OR I can do it my way and have the interface reasonably represent the instrument I intend to play at an 18 inch distance.
You're not really convincing me to stay away from the iPad with that argument
@KlausByskovHoffmann idk, I don't program on macs

@Moshe Judging from the domain name, that's where you order an iPad?

Oops, I read that as lifevalidation.com
3

@mootinator No, a nice little validation script.
@mootinator heh

8:51 PM

HTC – Ham, Tomato and Cheese

@drachenstern I have a midi keyboard, which is not really an instrument strictly speaking. But I get your point.
But why don't you program on your mac?
@PopularDemand Thanks man...

@KlausByskovHoffmann I'm more than happy for you to demonstrate playing the drums on that keyboard and it resemble a drum ;)
@KlausByskovHoffmann I don't have a mac ...

@KlausByskovHoffmann No problem. It comes up with Vim, gedit, Coda, TextMate, Geany....

8:52 PM
I already have vim... it's just a little too... erhm...
@drachenstern My keyboard has drum pads ;-)

@KlausByskovHoffmann that would be vim in a nutshell ;)

VIM – Very Infecting Malware

If you don't like VIM, try NANO :D

I actually spent half a year trying to master vim, and got so-so at it. The thing with it is that after a few years of not using it, you forget almost everything (apart from the simplest commands)

Yeah, vim needs a lot of dedication. More dedication than I have.

8:55 PM
NANO - Not Anyone's Notepad OfChoice
2

This is why I use Visual Studio with add-ons. It does the work for me. Not as fast as a neural connection, but it's getting there.
another 15 iterations applying Moore's law and it might be decent ;)

NANO – Not Another Notepad clOne

Oh, it's really a recursive one --> Nano ANOther editor.

PHP – PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor
If you just say Hypertext Preprocessor, it would be better written as HPP…

Yeah you know me.

8:59 PM
@Nyuszika7H It's the Php Hypertext Preprocessor
It's a recursive algorythm like GNU

GNU Not Unix

YAML Ain't Markup Language (originally: Yet Another Markup Language)

I didn't know they changed
I like the GNU HURD

PHP originally was Personal Home Page…

9:01 PM
@TheRenamedException Actually, @Nyuszika7H is right on this one. "PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor."

@PopularDemand what? Maybe I misunderstood
@PopularDemand from that page:
> PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. This confuses many people because the first word of the acronym is the acronym. This type of acronym is called a recursive acronym.

And when it was Personal Home Page, <?php->set('http://myevilsite.com/homepage-spoof/' . $php); ?> could be used to spoof someone's homepage.

@TheRenamedException I'm confused about why you wrote "It's the Php Hypertext Preprocessor," then.

@mootinator Hey I like nano

A: Can we please change the design to black-on-white?

Jeff AtwoodWe'll put together a user script at http://stackapps.com?tab=scripts for folks who really want the white layout -- in fact, we can probably put together a de-styler that converts any Stack Exchange design to a fairly minimalistic one for those that prefer it. Based on extensive meta feedback, si...

9:03 PM
@PopularDemand Because I just realized I am an idiot, I came in at the end of the conversation and was restating the same thing
Sorry @Nyuszika7H!

@TheRenamedException np

@TheRenamedException Obviously you're the exception that proves the rule. instantrimshot.com

@mootinator I like nano as well.

@PopularDemand Your nickname has nothing to do with exceptions. I don't know what to say.
Except ...wait for it...

@mootinator LALALALALALALALALALA NOT LISTENINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

9:08 PM
@mootinator What's that? I don't trust you.

I pressed the button and nothing happened.

@Nyuszika7H Do you have speakers?
It just plays a rimshot.

@PopularDemand I have built-in speakers, and no, they aren't muted.

@Nyuszika7H Hm. JavaScript enabled?

9:10 PM
@PopularDemand Yep.
Anyway, what's a rimshot? Google can't seem to be able to translate it to Hungarian.

@Nyuszika7H Two quick taps of a drum followed by a cymbal hit.

:This article references the term in the world of music. For the term's use in radio and television broadcasting, see Rimshot (broadcasting). A rimshot is the sound produced by hitting the rim and the head of a drum simultaneously, with a drum stick. Rimshots are usually played to produce a more accented note, and are typically played loudly. However, soft rim shots are possible. There are three standard types of rim shots in marching percussion. The first, most common type of rimshot is the normal rimshot. This is played with the bead (tip) of the stick about three inches from the rim....

@PopularDemand oh right

> The term is often used to refer to the sting played by the drummer in cabaret shows to accentuate the punchline of a joke. As a result, a particularly obvious laugh line is called a rimshot.
^^^^^^^^^^^ for those following along later ;)

Q: What's the most effective way to duplicate an instance on SQL 2008?

drachensternWe've got a simple database with just enough data in it to keep it useful, and we can use it for demonstration purposes, and I want to put a copy of it on my laptop so I can use it for dev work when I'm not at the office. (The regular dev databases are about 150GB, this one is 3GB) What's the mo...

how can I improve the quality of my question?

Ask about Oracle instead. Hah! instantrimsh.... nah.

@mootinator but it should be a good Q yeah?

9:32 PM
@drachenstern Yeah.

Q: Asking about CPUs?

MehrdadI have a question about speculative execution and pipelining in CPUs, and I'm wondering: should I ask it on SO? Or is it a software-only site?

@drachenstern Lot of stress lately?

night :)

@PopularDemand not so much, but now that you mention it... Didn't I tell you in an email all about that? Yeah, I think I did. So anyways, I mean, really, let's ask about asking if we can ask a question that may allow us to ask a question

@drachenstern Just saying, those are Welbog levels of caps.

9:44 PM
@PopularDemand some days they seem to be warranted
have you seen this page? meta.stackoverflow.com/users/154726/mehrdad?tab=accounts <-- dude is 7k on SO alone
I'm sorry, but with those levels of participation, you know to ask a question with substance.

@drachenstern "Lambert"? Odd.

@PopularDemand lambert?
oh, haha

@drachenstern Programmers SE username.

> With that in mind, let's look ahead to what's on the menu for this year: four adaptations of comic books. One prequel to an adaptation of a comic book. One sequel to a sequel to a movie based on a toy. One sequel to a sequel to a sequel to a movie based on an amusement-park ride.

I wasn't even looking at that

9:46 PM
> One prequel to a remake. Two sequels to cartoons. One sequel to a comedy. An adaptation of a children's book. An adaptation of a Saturday-morning cartoon. One sequel with a 4 in the title. Two sequels with a 5 in the title. One sequel that, if it were inclined to use numbers, would have to have a 7 1/2 in the title.

@mmyers where are you quoting from?
@mmyers I'm actually looking forward to 7 1/2 more than I was to 7

What would make a greasemonkey script not run? I have the right include, it shows up as enabled and running, but does nothing. When I run the js directly in the firebug console it does the right thing :-(
Basically, this is the script:
// ==UserScript==
// @name ReviewLink
// @author Klaus Byskov Hoffmann
// @namespace http://not-a-real-namespace.com
// @description Shows a link to the review page in the top link bar
// @include http://stackoverflow.com/*
// ==/UserScript==

$('#hlinks-custom').append($('#hlinks-custom span[class="lsep"]').first())
.append('<a href="/review">review</a>');

@KlausByskovHoffmann how did you save it?

hehe, yes, several times
oh, sorry

9:52 PM
@KlausByskovHoffmann The userscript doesn't have access to jQuery from within the userscript sandbox.

I just saved it from within the editor that pops up

as .user.js?

oh, interesting

@TimStone showoff

yup, it's called reviewlink.user.js

9:53 PM
k, just making sure

So I need to embed a function on the page through pure js, then from within that function I can use jQuery?

@drachenstern I still like my answer.

@mootinator which was?

A: Asking about CPUs?

mootinatorIf you can't decide where it goes, phrase your question as a programming puzzle (write a simulator which does X thing you have doubts about, and post it on http://codegolf.stackexchange.com/ Ducks.

@KlausByskovHoffmann something like that. Do you use the SEChatMod script?
@mootinator lmao

9:56 PM
No, but I have another script that does it... the "copy question link" script is doing something like that

@KlausByskovHoffmann Yep. @Fosco was also right, not sure why he deleted his message. You can insert the content on the page using normal DOM methods.

Q: How can I use jQuery in Greasemonkey?

Keira NighlyI tried putting this line but it doesn't work: // @require http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.2.6/jquery.js jQuery doesn't work in Greasemonkey at all. Is there other way to use jQuery in Greasemonkey? -- For all the people who have the same problem, you must upload the file...

Thanks guys
Works now :-)

Awesome :)

Is it too lame to submit?

9:58 PM
@KlausByskovHoffmann is what too lame to submit?

My script that adds a review link to the SO top link bar

You want to put it on stackapps? I would

I will then...

@drachenstern "Adam"? But that's a boy's name!

Should I include a bunch of the SE sites? It would make sense on all of them, even the metas, right? I mean for people with review privileges at least

10:01 PM
@PopularDemand I know, the horror! I could also use the excuse that southerners do that all men are Adam when you don't know their name, as Adam was "the first man's name" :p
@KlausByskovHoffmann yeah sure why not

@KlausByskovHoffmann For reference
7
Q: What's the correct way to @include all SE sites?

badp's sockpuppetWhat's the @include sequence that most accurately lists all the SE sites for greasemonkey/userscript hacking purposes?

@TimStone thanks. Why http://*/reputation ?

/reputation is pretty blank, so it's usually not useful to have a userscript try and run there.

@TimStone ah, it was an exclude... silly old blind me

Ah, yeah :)

10:14 PM
So adding a script on stackapps is "ask a question" and tag it "script" ?

Yes
but follow the template ;)

@drachenstern I will, I will ;-)

(It gives you a fill-in template :P)

Oooooh, nice, thanks @TimStone was going to try to edit/copy/paste/mend

No problem

10:25 PM
I really should post XMPP and the /status script, but, I need to fix bugs in both first
This weekend hopefully

Hello

stack* slow for me or for everyone?

@KlausByskovHoffmann Was slow for me earlier, but they resolved it.

actually, it seems like it's worst on stackoverflow.com
but if it's only me I'm not gonna bore you with it ;-)

5 hours ago, by balpha
@PopularDemand @ircmaxell try again in a minute; a fix is being deployed
Have you refreshed since then?

10:33 PM
yeah, I've been uninstalling monkey scripts so I have restarted firefox several times.

huh?
Oh, it turns out it was just cooincidence. My internet connection was fubar (some packet tracing at the firewall showed that)

Q: Change Unanswered tab to Review

Benjol About This is (allegedly) going to be implemented by the team sometime anyway. But just in case, and so you can play with it, here is a script which replaces the 'Unanswered' tab with 'Review'. NEW - attempts to notify user if the script becomes irrelevant (i.e. when this gets implemented by ...

gives you credit too, though

What's regex for all uppercase and lowercase letters?

[a-zA-Z]

oh
thanks
tried [Aa-Zz]
/^[A-Za-z]$/i
oh, the 'i', prolly

It only matches a single character?

10:59 PM
a) make it a-zA-Z like everbody else does, b) do you need the i?
@TimStone shhh, don't tell him

@TimStone yea, how do I fix that?
@drachenstern Haha have a star
