7:05 PM
I need to add simply (and hopefully temporary) logging to my application. What call do I need to get a path to the user's profile on all flavours of Windows (XP, Vista and 7)? I know there is one but my Google Fu is letting me down.

7:18 PM
@ChrisF In .NET? Isn't it something like System.Environment.GetFolderPath(System.Environment.SpecialFolder.UserProfile)); ?
@TheRenamedException Ah, if you wait until $(document).ready() to call .define() I think you shouldn't have to worry about that.

7:31 PM
1/2 way to convention! sad really...

Hooray!

/me should be more active in MSO. But for some reason, I havn't been

@TimStone That rings a bell. Though UserProfile doesn't appear.

7:48 PM
night :)

@ChrisF Oh, whoops. I just checked and that was only added in .NET 4. Hrm, I guess the best you can do is MyDocuments then, and then trim off (My )?Documents..

@TimStone Ah - It seems a bit overkill to upgrade the app to .NET 4 just for that. There's a couple of Application Data folders I might be able use.

That works too :)

8:17 PM
@TimStone Got simple logging. Now need to get the exe onto a 64 bit machine to see if it will tell me what's going on.

Nice. :D

8:32 PM
@Nyuszika7H If it were only that easy.
Well, there goes the scroll back.

8:43 PM
That's it, I'm going on a mobile phone developer tool downloading spree.

@mootinator iOS FTW!

lol

was just at the Apple Store again

Took in a friend's iPod.

8:44 PM
lol

brb

@Moshe I suppose it wouldn't be a legitimate spree if I didn't include that ;P
The mac doesn't have a mouse connected to it at the moment though :/

/me is backing up my nas device...

I'd have to find one

taking a while to transfer 8gb of data over 802.11G...

8:47 PM
@ircmaxell You're doing backup over wireless?
What's the sustained throughput?

not that high
perhaps 10 or 15 mbps...
I could connect to a gige ethernet port, but I'm too lazy
as that would involve walking down into the basement

lol
Well, 8 GB shouldn't take that long. At first I thought it was 8 TB.

Nah, it's a 2TB nas, but I'm only backing up the important stuff onto a thumb drive

@ircmaxell You should've bought the new MBP, with Intel Thunderbolt. :P

why?

8:53 PM
Allegedly insane potential for transfer speeds.

Yes, but requires special hardware
I'm doing this over normal ethernet/wifi and USB
onto a $17 8gb USB stick...

I'm just teasing.

I know

Anyone know how to copy a Windows XP Mode VM from one user to another?
Is it as simple as copying a file?

Well, there are 2 ways

8:54 PM
@ircmaxell ... Okay... how?

export the VM or copy the VM when in an off state
either works fine, exporting lets you rename, etc
40 minutes left in the transfer

Where do I find the VM file?

No clue

And export is a menu option?

/me uses VirtualBox

8:57 PM
oh, ok

@Moshe The settings for the VM should show that information some place. That's how it is with Virtual Box.

ok
Hang on, going to check, that machine is not right next to me.

Look for the hard drive config info, there's good chance it'll be there.
How, odd. My rep on Money.se just went up by 1 point. Something must have triggered a recalc.

There was a system-wide rep recalc earlier, but that should have impacted you before now.

@TimStone How much earlier, I haven't been awake for very long. :)

9:06 PM
Ah, a few hours. ;)

A: Sudden sharp drop in reputation; find out reason (recalc?)

Nick CraverWe are running a global recalc right now across all Stack Exchange sites in preparation for showing leagues on the /users page, you can see more details (and suggest things!) in this question: Redesigning the /users page Note no reputation rules have changed, we're just doing a recalc to get you...

aawww....I lost 50 on programmers...I was right at 3k.

@TimStone Heh, I was wondering how I gained 5 rep when I didn't get any question upvotes.

I got back 1 rep from a down vote somewhere, apparently.

I completely don't understand "in preparation for showing leagues on the /users page". The current users page is greatly affected by rep recalcs, since they change your total rep, but recalcs disproportionately affect old posts -- weekly leagues are likely to be unaffected

I think I lost 50 across SO/MSO/Programmers
No, make that about 150

9:15 PM
@MichaelMrozek I guess it's just a "While we're at it" thing to realign everyone's displayed rep.

I lost 10 but got it back shortly thereafter on an upvote

9:29 PM
The "related questions" box which pops up when you ask a question needs a giant flashing "LOOK HERE FIRST, SERIOUSLY" sign with animated arrows.

@mootinator That might make half of our users cross eyed

Yeah...

If the big red "your question is subjective" bar doesn't stop them, and the whole separate "your question blows" page doesn't stop them, no amount of flashing lights will help

The only solution is to have an overlay that asks "Which one of these questions is a duplicate of what you're asking?" and then crashes their browser when they select something.

A trick question!
"I declare that I am not asking this question because I just don't like the answers I or anyone else got last time it was asked."

Q: Trigger a rep recalc any time a post is deleted/undeleted or question migrated.

ChrisFGiven that the latest global reputation recalculation generated the usual spate of "Where's my reputation gone?" questions is it time to revisit the idea of performing periodic recalculations so people get used to the idea of reputation going down as well as up? If we limit it to the occasions w...

Does anyone know why recalcs are even needed? It doesn't seem particularly detrimental to performance to remove rep as posts are deleted, particularly since deletion isn't nearly as common as other things

You know, people should just get used to the fact that rep, like money has inflation and deflation. Get over it, it's just rep! Even if rep is worth anything at all IRL, ever lost a few K from a recalc? No! So stop whining!

@MichaelMrozek No idea. I'm sure there were reasons given when these things were previously suggested, but I can't remember any of them - apart from the vague "it would be a hit on the database"

I don't have a lot of rep, ~4K. I complained once and got over it. It's a fact of life.

@Moshe I'm pretty sure no part of that made sense except "stop whining". Rep inflation has nothing to do with this, rep is worth something when it comes to privileges, and people have lost a few K from a recalc

9:56 PM
Ok, then I stand corrected. Except that if you've been around enough to lose a few K on a recalc and you're still whining, something is wrong.

I'm just looking for a way to get this implemented so we don't get the slew of "where did my rep go?" questions on MSO every time there's a recalc (global or otherwise). If it happened more often people would get used to it.

@ChrisF True.
@ChrisF How about a banner alert for recalcs?
There's been a recalc [link](What's that?)
For people under a threshold or new users or people who lost over a certain amount of rep.

@Moshe People don't read - see any number of duplicate/subjective questions that get posted and people answering their own question like it was a forum.

@ChrisF StackOverflow should employ XKCD or someone similar to write comics instead of alerts. no reading required.

@ChrisF I was amazed at how many questions about changed reputation were listed back to back on the MSO main page this morning, heh.
@MichaelMrozek Honestly, this is a good question. If I can go in each day now and press the button, I'm confused where the issue lies.

10:03 PM
@ChrisF we'd just get the same question more often I fear. ):

@RebeccaChernoff You might be right. I was hoping that if it happened often enough people would just used to it....

Hm, I guess that has some truth to it. There's plenty of those "Where did 15 of my rep go?" questions.

@TimStone Which is a slightly different question - as it's the rescinding of an acceptance that triggers that.
16
Q: Show rep lost or gained from rescinded votes

ChrisFMy rep on SO just changed from 14,546 to 14,558. Checking my recent activity, I saw that I'd received one upvote which only accounts for 10 of the 12 points. Obviously someone has rescinded a downvote on one of my posts - but which one? While it's trivial in this case, it's more serious if you...

Naturally, I was just assuming that the scenario would play out the same. :)

@ChrisF but it still has to happen to each person first

10:05 PM

Q: Notification when my answer is unaccepted?

fbreretoI just lost some reputation, presumably because someone changed their selected answer from mine to someone else's. Can these losses of reputation be noted on my reputation page similar to the other ways in which my reputation fluctuates? I'd like to figure out which answer was unaccepted so I can...

@RebeccaChernoff Again true, stop picking holes in my argument dammit!

haha, ok, sorry! q:

Aww, a happy rep recalc story:

Q: How did I get a Mortarboard badge when I've only earned 95 rep for the whole month?!?

Sam HaslerI was awarded the Mortarboard badge for my SO account today, but I've only received 95 rep for the whole month. Why did I get it?

@ChrisF Oh, btw, I assume you tried refreshing your careers profile and such to get that section back? I didn't have any problems with it on my profile, but I did try to break it to help. (;

@RebeccaChernoff Yes. I clicked between Employer view, public view and edit a few times

10:09 PM
Something like that was what I expected to see. Perhaps because I have checked them in the past I don't get this - a one time only "set something" flag?

Hm, I wonder if I should create a Careers profile even though I couldn't leave my job even if I wanted to..

That's how mine was initially. I went in and checked a box, saw the "Seeking ...", edited again to uncheck everything, and now I see ^^^ again.

@TimStone depends what your job is.

Hehe yeah I'm not looking (q:) I just wanted to play around with it.

@RebeccaChernoff You better not be, hahah. :P

10:12 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Definitely weird then.

@TimStone (;

I am officially declaring that formatting a 1.27 TB file system created on a cheap SATA RAID-5 is as painful as brushing your teeth with super glue.
Not that I've tried the latter.

@RebeccaChernoff Jeff probably has it rigged to e-mail him automatically when SOIS employees check the "seeking" box

@MichaelMrozek It's probably rigged up to a system that tightens each employee's leash every time it happens.

10:15 PM
@TimStone Oh...that explains things!

You best be careful, if it gets too short you won't be able to reach Panera (That's your equivalent of Josh's P.F. Chang's right?)!

I've been to Panera once in the last couple years, so no.

Oh, never mind then. :P

Speaking of restaurant problems, I inadvertently ended up going to Subway 4 times last week. Which is a record by quite some margin

My hands are in pain.
Time to stop typing.

10:18 PM
@Moshe That's a good line; you should use that in court
"It wasn't me so much as the hands. They wouldn't stop killing"
2

@MichaelMrozek Hehe.
Must go on.
Been like this for a feww weeks already.

@MichaelMrozek Hm, I could go for some Subway right now. I could also go for some sushi...

@TimStone Nippon has Sushi.
There was a guy in school who didn't like the food. Ordered out every single night. You guessed it - Sushi.

I spent $7000+ over three years ordering food while in university. I was, and still am, ashamed of myself.

@TimStone Wow.

10:24 PM
Hey, does anyone know about a reputation recalculation that might have caused my rep to drop about 200 points?

14
A: Sudden sharp drop in reputation; find out reason (recalc?)

Nick CraverWe are running a global recalc right now across all Stack Exchange sites in preparation for showing leagues on the /users page, you can see more details (and suggest things!) in this question: Redesigning the /users page Note no reputation rules have changed, we're just doing a recalc to get you...

@PhilWheeler Yep. Read the transcript.

Q: Which SE site has the longest name?

MosheWhich StackExchange site has the longest name? What is it?

hmm, /del seems broken

Really?

@Moshe how are we supposed to answer that? It could change tomorrow.
and currently, look at stackexchange.com/sites

10:27 PM
@RebeccaChernoff As of now.

@TimStone no error, just doesn't do anything. doesn't send /del to the server as a message, no hey use //, no nothing.

@Moshe Ah. Thanks. Epic fail in the PR department, I'd say. Normally Jeff would post something on the SE blog, I thought. Bit frustrating.

Prolly Audio Recording and Production

@Moshe and what's stopping you from looking at the sites list? (;

@RebeccaChernoff You aren't, you're supposed to vote to close as noise or pointless. ;)
@RebeccaChernoff Interesting, I know that pressing D works...hmm...
investigates

10:28 PM
@TimStone Yup, that's what I did next.

@TimStone It's not pointless. It's a question about SE and it's for the benefit of guessing the max length of a site title for my CSS file.

So go test and find out. Done deal.

@Moshe You ought to put that in the question then

@ChrisF fair enough

@RebeccaChernoff Hm, /del works for me.

10:29 PM
@Moshe It still might not stop the question getting deleted though.

@Moshe, look at the api, I think there's a suggested_field value on the help pages maybe?
I'm so nice. q:

@RebeccaChernoff Indeed, you are. Thank you. tips cap

@Moshe, I demand a gold star now!
2
(;

@RebeccaChernoff I am out of stars as of 5AM this morning Eastern Time. I'll give you two if you change the rules of starring ;-)

Not a silly chat star. I want a real gold star.

10:38 PM
So, should I go for Kubuntu again, or switch back to Ubuntu for 10.10?

...do you like KDE or Gnome?

I like KDE in 10.04... But I've heard of some nice advancements in Gnome included in 10.10

@ircmaxell I ended up going with KDE

Yeah, I've got nothing against KDE, I like what they did in 4.4 a lot

10:40 PM
My MB and my Cap

I use KDevelop / KATE quite a bit, and the compiz mouse gestures are really easy to tweak

@Moshe ...?

Plus plasma is much more responsive in the latest, and kdeinit stopped hogging up so many cycles

/me doesn't use mouse gestures. I use hot-corners a lot

@ircmaxell I do too, depending on which system I'm working on

10:42 PM
fair enough

@RebeccaChernoff I tipped my cap.

I think I'll try Gnome again. I kinda miss my fingerprint reader...

We need some Stack Overflow caps

@TimPost Indeed.

10:43 PM
And coffee cups. Is there a cafe press shop for it?

OMG I JUST FOUND A GIANT "Oy" IN A REALLY OLD PHOTO I TOOK
3

Sell lots of SO gear, mark it up a bit, donate it to charity at the end of the year

@TheRenamedException lmao

@TheRenamedException IT'S LIKE THE FSM! IT'S EVERYWHERE!!

Come on, what parent doesn't want a SO baby jumper for their newborn?

10:44 PM
lol

@TimPost Or a can of nutritious Stackoverfl-O's?

This is an official announcement from hack underflow: NOW ON SALE: Vegan Unicorn Meat Substitute - Made entirely from soy, tofu and comet droppings.

Ahahahah

@TimStone A byte of bits in every overflowing spork! (spork sold seperately)

10:48 PM
@TheRenamedException All hail the almighty oy!

@TimPost waits for the flood of Meta questions "Where's my spork?" marked [status-bydesign]

...wait for it...
Ugh, could be better, no time to worry about it now.

11:22 PM
Sooooo many non-answers. burns through flags

11:51 PM
@RebeccaChernoff - I've fixed much of the less noticable details. when you can, please have another look and let me know what's still amiss.

@Moshe StackOver-Floss! Clean your teeth, gain reputation!

@badp A reputation for bleeding gums and fresh breath!
Dr @badp, Dr @badp - Can you fix my userstylescript?
It needs feedback.

Um, yeah.
I can use it and tell you when it screws up.

@badp Please take a look. Thanks. It's gonna flicker every time you load a page, that;s a consequence of the hosting setup. Feel free to open issue reports on GitHub. Thank you.
