5:25 AM
Hmm...210 messages since I went away...yet I can't actually scroll back to see it all.

:o

There's something odd with the jQuery plugin or my usage of it

Apparently, it knew that I was away, but continued to scroll the chat anyway.

I actually get annoyed when it doesn't do that, heh. :P

Rewritten part of the scrolling code to do automatic collapsing and expansion
I need to squash a few bugs, but the Chrome color animation bug is odd

5:28 AM
Is that why the sidebar is flashing white?

@TimStone A quick page down fixes that issue. I'd have to go spelunking through the transcript that this point.

@GeorgeMarian True, true.

@TimStone Yeah, but I'm not sure which part of the code is causing it

@YiJiang Hmm

Works okay on Firefox, will check out Opera next
navMain.find('a[href=#' + currentArticle + ']').animate({
    color: ORIG_COLOR,
    backgroundColor: ORIG_BGCOLOR
}, 200, function(){
    $(this).removeAttr('style');
}).end().find('a[href=#' + articleId + ']').animate({
    color: ACTIVE_COLOR,
    backgroundColor: ACTIVE_BGCOLOR
}, 200);
Ignore the CONSTANTS, currentArticle is the old element, and articleId represents the new element

5:29 AM
Speaking of annoying, I hate how quickly my glasses get "dirty." It's like they're dust magnets.

Okay, it's acting even weirder with Opera. Gosh...

Wait, what's it doing?

@YiJiang Seems alright in Opera, what's wrong with it there?

Ok, that's odd. Some of the sections cause the items under "Intro" to be hidden. So the sidebar moves while scrolling through the content.

o_O

5:33 AM
BTW, I'm not seeing this flashing in FF4.

@TimStone To me, when scrolling sometimes menu will suddenly expand and contract instantaneously , even though you're only scrolling inside a section, and not between articles
@GeorgeMarian The flashing is on Chrome, not Firefox

@TimStone Yah, if I scroll through some the entire page, "Overview" "The Authors" "Contributors" and "License" get hidden, but only in some sections.
@YiJiang OIC

@GeorgeMarian Yes, that's intended I believe, if your screen can't accommodate the whole menu it will contract and expand sections as you scroll

Ahhh
That explains why I wasn't seeing that, hahah
My screen is too large apparently :P

@TimStone Show off :|
Anyway, we needed a way for this to work for small screen users

5:36 AM
No, it's nice, I was just confused before.

Originally only the section you're in will expand, I found that too inefficient use of screen space, so I tried this instead
Now... to squash bugs...

@YiJiang Yah, but it's not consistent. My screen can accommodated the whole menu.

@GeorgeMarian I know, there are some bugs in the height calculation code.

As I scroll from "Functions - Scopes and Namespaces" into "Arrays" the menu shrinks.
Then, when I go from "Arrays" into "Types" it expands again. Then shrinks as I scroll into "Core."

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, that happened to me to, though for some other parts. I'm very sure that shouldn't happen, but hrump...
Oh wait, did you resize your window?
Hmm, no, that shouldn't be the cause either

5:40 AM
Well, it seems like this is being done as you scroll and there's something slightly different between those sections.
Nope, haven't resized. It happens to be a maximized window.

I think some section's heights are being counted twice

Hmm...it happens if I click to the "problem" sections as well.
So, if I go from the top of the page, and click on an item in "Core" or "Arrays" the menu shrinks by hiding the items under "Intro."
If you'd like, I can provide screenshots.

@GeorgeMarian me too

@Moshe Do you have polycarbonate lenses?

@GeorgeMarian Dunno. They're high index.

5:52 AM
@Moshe Hmm...they may be glass then, depends on how blind you are. ;)

@GeorgeMarian hehe

To make it more annoying, my glasses are for a slight astigmatism. Otherwise, my vision is 20/20.
On the plus side, they do look quite good on me. :)

@GeorgeMarian - Have you seen my half finished userscript/userstyle?

hates on markdown
Generally, it's quite nice. But when it's bad, it's pretty bad. Or it could be the implementation.
@Moshe Nope, haven't felt brave enough to look at it yet. :)

@GeorgeMarian It's not so bad, and it includes a toggler, if you don't like it. (The toggler is still a bit broken though - no persistence between pages, if you click a link it reapplies the userstyle.)

5:58 AM
heh "Extensions, apps and themes can harm your computer." Not necessarily the best wording for a disclaimer.

@GeorgeMarian Nope.
@GeorgeMarian - So, did it harm your computer?

heh
I haven't installed it yet. :P
In what folder does chrome place user scripts?

@GeorgeMarian No idea, I'm on Mac, btw.
@GeorgeMarian There is a website you can ask that on, btw.... :P

@Moshe Google? ;)

@GeorgeMarian superuser.com
@GeorgeMarian Mac or Windows or 'nix?

6:03 AM
'nix

The annoying thing is that it's quite possibly in the same basic location as the user style that i installed a while back.
As I recall, the location was less than obvious.

They get stored in the Extensions folder, but I'm not sure where that lives on non-Windows machines.

@GeorgeMarian huh? Oh, well this script supersedes any scripts reference on the SE sites, by replacing the link element with it's own stylesheet. No idea how userstyles will interact with

It's someplace in the home directory, but it's not under .chromium directory like you'd expect. It's buried in some other directory.

6:09 AM
@TimStone - Any thoughts/issues with the minimalOverflow atm?

@Moshe All I was saying is that I've been through this once and I don't recall where it was. Maybe because the location isn't exactly obvioius.

Nope

@TimStone heh, how anticlimactic.
@GeorgeMarian gotcha
There we go
That page should list it.
Google Chrome: ~/.config/google-chrome/Default
Chromium: ~/.config/chromium/Default

Yup, that seems to be the place.

OK
has no idea where this iPhone App's settings bundle has gone

6:18 AM
Freaking Gawker media and their BS JavaScript dependent URLs.

@GeorgeMarian Well, did you get over your scriptophobia?

Well, I wanted to know where I'd have to go to uninstall an alpha script. :P

chrome://extensions/ -> Uninstall :P

Well it's almost finished. It's the CSS that need polish.
The script merely loads CSS into any SE page and provides a convenient link to toggle the two stylesheets.

@TimStone Like that's obvious.

6:23 AM
(it's Wrench -> Tools -> Extensions)

@TimStone No, I meant the notion that user scripts would be listed under extensions.

\O/ I thoroughly messed up my iPhone. iOS development has hit an instability peak.

@GeorgeMarian Ah, yeah...

Speaking of which, I don't actually know where chromium stuck this user script. It's certainly not in my User Scripts directory. =/

Ugh, stupid Settings.bundle LOAD, I say LOAD!

6:26 AM
@Moshe So where's this link to switch the styelsheets located?

In the topbar, next to "FAQ"

Yup, I definitely got nothing new there.

Did you restart Chrome after installing?

6:29 AM
You should only have to refresh the page.

You shouldn't need to restart Chrome after installing a userscript

I went to a new page.

I don't know, the above is what should be visible in chrome://extensions.

Mine's slightly different.

@GeorgeMarian ? what do you see?
wonders what he accidentally broke

6:32 AM
Hold on. GIMP seems to be choking on something.

@MichaelMrozek I'd plug my userscript now, but seeing as someone is having trouble with it, I won't tell you to go install it.

I don't really want the minimalist style anyway, I like it the way it is

@MichaelMrozek Ok, just looking for feedback.

@GeorgeMarian Oh? Strange. Seems like a Chromium bug.

6:34 AM
So, apparently not installed correctly or something.
That's what happened when I clicked on the file on github. Now, to do the install manually.

@GeorgeMarian yea.
@GeorgeMarian Ok, I'm here.

Which is part of the reason I didn't rush out to do it in the first place. :P

@GeorgeMarian hear hear.

Hmm, must be a quiet weekend. SE Modifications hasn't taken over the #1 spot on StackApps script's list yet. :P

I know there was something else I wanted to do tonight. Oh, well. Not like I remember what it is.

6:35 AM
Does Chromium choke on things like longer version numbers?

Oh yah, smoke this cigar. I guess I can do both.
@Moshe I dunno, it's the same basic thing as Chrome. (Not that couldn't be "slight" differences.)

I'm starring too much, my whole starred list has yellow star next to it.
What build of chromium do you have?

Grrr...when I open a new window, I expect it to have focus.

@GeorgeMarian another chromium bug? :P

@Moshe Nah, that's Gnome or Metacity or Xorg
A stupid 'nix annoyance of some sort.

6:40 AM
@TimStone @YiJiang - Does my script have to worry about other cookies from other scripts or parts of the site?

Ok, WTF am I not doing correctly?

Wha?

@GeorgeMarian for starters, you're on the wrong OS :P

@Moshe Right, 'cause paying for minor updates is the way to go... :P

Zing!

6:42 AM
So, I placed the js and the css in: ~/.config/chromium/Default/User Scripts

@TimStone When setting a cookie in my userscript, can I use document.cookie without filtering other cookies?
@GeorgeMarian You just need the JS file.

(That's spelled correctly, right?(

yea, hang on

@Moshe Oh, alright. Well, same difference?

Hm, in Chrome it all goes in the Extensions folder.

6:43 AM
@TimStone =/
@#$^%$

(and then it uses some annoying random ID)

32 mins ago, by Moshe
@GeorgeMarian : http://www.chromium.org/user-experience/user-data-directory

@Moshe No

I mean, really. WTF? So many pages on the interwebs say "User Scripts," which would seem to make sense, since it's "User StyleSheets" for user styles.

@TimStone Ok, so what must I do to have a boolean cookie in my userscript?

6:44 AM
Use localStorage anyway, it's much easier..

takes a deep breath

@TimStone how so?
and is that only HTML5-ish?

localStorage['myFlag'] = true Done.
It is.

@TimStone o ok

But userscripts..

6:45 AM
meh, only HTML5 browsers use userscripts

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, I don't get it either.

@TimStone can I put a string in there?
Like a path?

Because it's not like the User StyleSheets folder doesn't exist anymore, so..
Yes, it only stores strings.

@TimStone ok great

Ok, so I went back to letting chromium install it and still nothing. It's enabled for all sites, right?

6:46 AM
@GeorgeMarian Yes, it is, hang on, updating in a sec

For some reason it apparently can't read the metadata. I had that problem earlier because of a BOM, but his file is ANSI-encoded anyway.

See, I used to have Firefox straining under the load of too many addons. It's annoyances like this that make me avoid many addons. :)

@TimStone I made the script in textwrangler for Mac, is that related to the issue?

Unsurprisingly, I have zero idea. :P

I read that as textmangler
Mmm...mmm..mmm this cigar is tasty.

6:51 AM
@GeorgeMarian What does vim think of the userscript file? Is it formatted correctly?

Hrm.. @TimStone = Can I use if(!localStorage['pathToStyleSheet']) to check for an empty stylesheet variable in local storage?

Sure

Ah, hmm...apparently, it thinks is an html file.
/headdesk
> ERROR: certificate common name *.github.com' doesn't match requested host name github.com'.

Ohh

@GeorgeMarian Oh, heh...

@TimStone Hmm..that looks like an html file as well.

Your Chromium must not have the update that allows it to ignore .user.js files that aren't served as type text/javascript.
Really?

I hope I didn't break everything just now.
Pushed the local storage update

@TimStone Yup.

Weird.

6:56 AM
@TimStone All usercript capable browsers should handle local storage, right?

No clue. Firefox and Chrome do.

I don't think they're related, per se.

nope broke it

I guess everything else does too, otherwise I lied a bit on the userscript descriptions.

ugh
hang on fixing.
is too lazy to do it right the first time around

6:58 AM
wonders if it'd just be easier to do a git clone
Grr...really github? Your site depends on JavaScript to function, yet you have no <noscript> tag to let me know that?

Ouch, at least SO has that big red failbar, heh.

Oh....hmm, maybe i was wrong about that raw link. I forgot that wget doesn't clobber files.

Ugh, @GeorgeMarian - hang in there. Don't clone it yet.
@TimStone - How do I read out that localStorage value?
localStorage['pathToStylesheet'] seems to return nothing.

It should, if you set it to something.

@TimStone hrm, ... mmm
Oh, I keep doing that

7:07 AM
You should make sure to type names in the right case..

@TimStone yea, I'm thinking I should replace "stylesheet" with "CSS"

This question should have been migrated to meta, then closed as NARQ. People with close votes these days...

Q: Not really a question

aaaI am drunk and I just wanted to express my gratitude to people who run and run around the stax sites helping others. Stack FTW!!! Now close/downvote me to hell.

It works!
@TimStone, @GeorgeMarian, go for it now!

I'm always confused by people who get that drunk and then end up on Stack Overflow of all places.

nod
I shouldn't be up when people are that drunk.
That's my cue...

7:11 AM
..Huh, I've never thought of it like that.
reconsiders sleep schedule

@TimStone - Before you make life altering decisions, did you see the latest version of my script? It works!
@GeorgeMarian - Let me know if you get 0.0.7.7 working.

Uh I did not. But cool.

@TimStone Ok. Thanks for the localStorage tip. I wouldn't be able to digest cookies at this hour.

Cookies are pretty annoying to work with in JavaScript, so no problem.

notices just how not minimal his style is
I really need to give that a second look.
but the toggler works and that's nice.
Okay, gnight.

7:15 AM
G'night.

@Moshe Ok, 0.7.8 seems to work.
PFM, I tell yah.

\o/

I still want to know WTF is up w/ this "User Scripts" directory. Why can't they just go in there?
And, WTF is up w/ the random directory names under Extensions? Are they trying to be annoying on purpose?

That'd be too easy :P
That's how they name their URLs too!
WTF is that shit!
(Well, it's Mahjong Solitaire, but you'd never know)

Hasn't this lesson already been learned? make the effing thing work in multiple ways. Why should I have to use their approved interface? Especially since they're just thrown in directories. grr
@TimStone Nice. That's all sorts of special.
Ok, the flash of style kinda sucks...

7:31 AM
Ah, because of the delay in invoking the userscript?

Yah, probably.
It makes for a rather hacky solution.

Yeah, not a particularly appropriate task for a userscript.
Though for the purposes of development I imagine it's decent enough.

@TimStone Yah, I think i was making that point earlier. :D

Userstyle, dammit! I said userstyle!

@YiJiang That's what I said as well. But, that's a rather all or nothing type of thing, isn't it?

7:33 AM
@GeorgeMarian I believe so too, heh :D

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, unfortunately
You can make it an extension, but that really isn't that good an alternative

Or, better yet they can just do it the right way and make it part of the site's functionality.

yesterday, by Jeff Atwood
hmm @badp brings up a good point -- perhaps rather than a script with a bunch of embedded styles, we should officially maintain the "clean" css and support switching to it as specified

Yeah, that.
BTW, don't ever setup an aquarium, unless you really want a whole lot of annoyances.

Heh, those fish still going strong? :P

7:37 AM
Actually, a bunch of them died off in my tank. It's been empty since then. And I just noticed today that the other tank isn't as overcrowded as it was.

Oh, damn.

I just had to move the air bubbler into the other tank, which led to my cigar going out which I blame for it tasting rather crappy now.
@TimStone Yah, I lost the tetras and a bunch of guppies, but I have more guppies than I know what to do with.
Thankfully, the chinese algae either survived. That's a cool little fish, even if it's constantly hiding.

Ah ha...fish, pain in the ass, heh.

I'm back...

A: A client wants me to do CSS coding (only) but doesn't want to provide me the php files.

MosheI'm actually doing this right now for SO. I'm working on a userscript that provides an alternate "clean" stylesheet for the StackExchange network. I have no access to the SO engine. I am using the Chrome Inspector to look at how the elements are set up. I recommend the same. (Although it is a li...

@TimStone They require a lot of effort to maintain.

7:41 AM
Not sure if this is NARQ, but I made a point of answering, since I'm doing the same essentially, for SO.

Worse yet, I read that you should start w/ at least a 20 gal tank until you know what you're doing.
Alas, 10 gal tanks are the most common.

@GeorgeMarian - I know about that flash, can't do much about it until it's ready for SE to take over and host.

Not to mention that many of the accessories are designed like adult toys.
@Moshe Yah, I figured. Like I said, they just need to make part of the site's functionality.

Hahahah

@GeorgeMarian I'm working on it. Notice the CSS file has been changing over the last few minutes...

7:50 AM
LOL Apparently, someone on delicious.com has tagged that chorium user data directory link with a privacy tag.
