Ok, bedtime for sure. Ciao

> The RIVA TNT2 also has the ability to render up to 10 million triangles per second
g'night

@YiJiang, well I guess so, but it's approximative
You mean bounties gained, or bounties given?

Both, actually - a lot of either will skew the results

@YiJiang, well if you've gained bounty, you've gained it on your answer, so that still makes sense.
bounties lost is different though, effectively.

A: IT'S OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!! (elections available only to high rep users)

BenjolI'm very concerned that with just using rep as a criteria, we could end up with a high-volume questioner, who's never set foot in meta, never voted, and never edited anything :( EDIT My point is that if you're not hanging out on meta, then in my book that means you're not interesting in HOW the ...

for your interest...

Yeah, but... ah well, this is only a rough guide. Should be taken with a pinch of salt

7:06 AM
@YiJiang, include that last sentence in the title :)
<picky>row header font is a bit too light for my eyes, by the way</picky>

Right, will fix

Another interesting statistic? Rep/months on site :)
(If you think that rep is important, which apparently 'we' do)

Okay, let me try that too, though the reputation graph is probably a much better indicator

@drachenstern - remember those links you posted with the oversized Apple icons?

How many API requests are we making here, hmmm... let's see... 1 for so/user, 3 for so/user/tags, 30 for stackauth/user/associate, one more for mso/user... wow
And that's not even counting badges yet

floodgates are open again

:O

feel free to submit a few edits from chrome anonymous if you want to experiment

@YiJiang is no longer unsupported!

@TimStone You noticed? :P

7:48 AM
Yeah, coincidentally, hahah.

I still think the diff is unintelligible... sorry @waffles :(

@Benjol Seconded, it's just not very good

yeah well what do you expect from 4 hours of work :) ....
much more work needs to go into it

I hate it less. :P

You saw my mockup? I know it requires too much screen estate, but I still think whether it is markdown or html, your diff needs to be side-by-side

Also, where's Marc? I need to blame him for my being logged out of chat.SE twice tonight.

[status-almost-but-not-entirely-similar-something-I-might-use]

yeah I want to have a side-by-side

@waffles, just one thing I still haven't gathered, does a 2k+ approval need a second approval or does it go straight through. And is the intention still to give rep for edits, and if so is that going to be retroactive? :)

second approval at the moment

@waffles, that's counter intuitive, is that just because the code is like that, or is there some deeper reasoning?

7:58 AM
Jeff wants it that way ... its too early to make a call anyway

ok
and what about rep?

@Benjol Hey, if those guys get rep, then surely so should we for all the editing we do :P

@YiJiang, my thoughts precisely. But I'm not really in favour of rep for editing. IN my book editing should be for love, not money :)

@YiJiang do you know that boltcity guy ?

@Reno Not personally, no. Why?

8:05 AM
ah ok .. i was going thru their stuff , pretty awesome part of the internets i stumbled upon today

Yup

The great clown Poliachi is in town, go see him, that should pick you up. Man bursts into tears -- but Doctor, he says, I am Poliachi. Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

wtf :/
I'm watching Watchmen
in the span of 5 minutes, Silk Spectre has 3 different pairs of boots on in what's supposed to be a single continuous shot
one has silver stiletto heels, one has thicker black heels, and one pair has no heel at all

10:10 AM
@YiJiang, you're doing an amazing job!
but I think you're right about rep/post, though less because of bounty than because of those mega question (favourite programming cartoon etc) which can really screw up the stat
but I guess saying that is saying that rep itself is a screwed-up stat ;)

Made in @YiJiang :)

@Benjol very good, I guess you're working still on the MSO bits? :)

I am, yes. Making stupid mistakes left right and center though :|

no, I'm just cheering YiJiang along :)

1. Random sort, or by order of nomination
2. upvotes, downvotes and ratio
3. rep per answer/question
4. SO badges where badge in [Strung and White, Copy-Editor, Pundit (maybe), Electorate (Maybe), Civic Duty, Sportsmanship]
5. Meta participation: rep, questions, answers
6. SO Chat participation : rooms, posts, last seen
7. Meta Chat participation : rooms, posts, last seen
8. Include StackFlair?
9. Don't expose live version, just saved-as-html

10:17 AM
See the state the page is in now? Yeah, that must be the very definite of a stupid mistake

Where should I look? Looks ok to me

That's some massive participation
now I know who to vote

Ah, ok,

stupid Firefox 4, stop lagging behind my typing

10:20 AM
@YiJiang, I've had another idea (sorry!), mouseover each badge colour dot gives the badge list :)

This makes me feel like I'm taking a typing test.

@Benjol Oof, that's... well, it's possible, but I haven't examined the /badge route yet
@badp Funny, I've never had that bad a lag unless it's me leaving Firebug open for too long and it leaked too much memory

@badp That seems more like a rendering bug
The text doesn't appear but the cursor moves and is responsive

That doesn't make it much better...

10:27 AM
Hey everyone!
Where can I find info on the use of @ signs in comments again?
Never mind.

@oKtosiTe, here, ask us, there's not that much to know...

47
Q: How do comment @replies work?

How do I respond to a specific user when entering my comment? Will they be notified? Related: How do I view my recent replies? Return to the FAQ index

@Benjol I was wondering about spaces. Now I know to omit them.

test run is over ... for the record ... out of 20 edits I just reviewed I had to reject 0 ..... requiring a comment made a huge diff ... I got at least 3 excellent anon-edits

@waffles As in, actual anon-edits, and not one of us here testing the system? :P

@waffles, good news, were they rep-worthy :)
@YiJiang, 'fess up :) I did one, but I half-approved it myself...

@waffles, not me

@waffles Hmmm... no OP highlighting there?

OP highlighting ? I see it as a much more durable and useful solution

10:42 AM
The OP's signature is always highlighted blue, no?
It's not in that answer.

perhaps a bug then ... true

OOh, @YiJiang, nice touch with the nomination spiel in there... can I have the link test slightly darker please? :)

@JohannesSchaublitb Gals. Personally, I prefer gals.

@waffles, I have a dev question, how can someone with a higher id have been around for longer?

account merging possibly

10:48 AM
@GeorgeMarian i don't

OK

@JohannesSchaublitb Hey, it's your choice. I'm not judging, or anything. :)

i'm not judging either. great we are in peace

ill nuke that droid synonym
alll the rest I think are kind of ok ... same class of questions
re:

Q: Some confusing synonyms are active

Johannes Schaub - litbI found a couple of things that aren't really synonyms homework <-> book-exercise Not really synonymous. I can just ask about a homework my teacher gave me, which isn't out of a book. homework <-> programming-exercise / exercise Same reason. I can myself make me a programming exercise or...

ok, given that it's very unlikely that someone asks a question tagged with "interview-answer", i can see the use of this synonym is greater than the possible damage it causes
maybe the tag synonym page should explain that "alternative spelling for a tag" does also include cases like fast being alternative spelling of the performance tag. i.e they don't need to have the same meaning. currently, "bike"/ "bicycle" and "sock"/"socks" shows two kind of synonyms: equivalence and plurality. fast/performance seems to be a third kind.

10:57 AM
Phew... that's done now, well I'll work on the badges after dinner I suppose

@waffles I think a few of us made anonymous edits from an incognito window just to test this out. Well, I know I did.

@YiJiang, you are my hero :)
There's chat too, of course :)
oh, and the random sort :)
bon appetit!

@Benjol Oh god... chat. Don't even mention it...

@waffles maybe synonyms should have an explicit kind? this way, if there are two synonyms, both being of kind "equivalence", the system could automatically construct the transitive closure.

@JohannesSchaublitb the fast/perf is an outlier, they are so rare I do not want to document it

10:59 AM
oh ok

Chat has no API, so the only way to get the info is to use X-domain ajax to grab the chat profile of each candidate

ok, so we need a quick feature request for that API then :)

lol, "quick"

@Benjol Ha! Well, it's not going to happen :P

For chat your best bet is wait for a final candidate list

11:01 AM
@JohannesSchaublitb the big issue we were seeing a while back was lots of people kept on suggesting and approving stuff like .... php5 -> php ... this was a nightmare ... there is code now that specifically disables this pattern

Well there are three of us, if we all gang up on @balpha :)

except for that synonyms have been working quite well for the last month or so
@badp thanks for exercising the system .... need to heavily improve my ghetto diff engine ... diff by line is too verbose

@YiJiang, 8 'respectable' MSOers out of 30 nominees... by my standards that's not too good...

11:20 AM
@waffles oh i see.

11:54 AM
@YiJiang, really really looking good. You deserve Pekka's rep for this :)
May I suggest an intro text at top: especially to state that the presentation order is random (if/when it is), and say that each person is free to decide what importance to give to each statistic. You could even link back to my question so people can add stuff there that they'd like to see.
I'd also consider sticking a 'add this code to my cart' button at the bottom for the SO dev team :)

@Benjol Hahaha
@Benjol Right, good idea. Will do that after polishing up a bit. Still trying to see how badges can be added

It's a shame there's no anchors on the actual nominations, otherwise you could link back to them too

Each of them carries an unique post id which can be used
['Sportsmanship', 'Civic Duty', 'Pundit', 'Electorate', 'Copy Editor', 'Strunk and White'] is a good list of badges to look for?
Should the Talkative and the two Meta badges be included too?

12:12 PM
why not?
but how are you thinking of presenting it?
did you see the idea for mouseover on the badge counts? that could take up less room

One possibility is a checklist

except for the ones who've got half a million

@Benjol Not discoverable, no

Well, you've got lots of other mouseovers with faint underlines.

[title] { border-bottom: 1px dotted #ddd; cursor: help; } - hints for the title tooltip

12:19 PM
Just so I understand, you don't like the idea of adding the tooltip to the badge icon+count?

Well, the tooltip would be massive

(sorry for the delayed answers, I am actually working a bit in between :)
ok, I see what you mean...

Most of the other tooltip info isn't very important
This one, on the other hand, is pretty pertinent information

ok, so we're going for just choosing what we consider to be the important badges
that suits me

Is there something wrong with me if I want to edit a question just to fix the location of the quotation mark at the end of the sentence?

12:22 PM
@GeorgeMarian Hehehe... us programmers are quite OCD about our punctuations

@YiJiang I do own 3 copies of Strunk & White.

@GeorgeMarian, don't hang out much on English.se then, I guess?
:)

@Benjol No, not really. I should really put an effort into that. Though, I don't know. It may lead to me losing even more hair. ;)

@GeorgeMarian, no I say that because Strunk & White has been heavily lambasted by some of the top users there :)
@YiJiang, the profile links are missing the .com. And if you can get 'last activity' date from meta, that would be ultra cool too (though you might want to hide it, in case they all go visit just to screw the statistic :)

@Benjol Oh, I see.

12:26 PM
@Benjol Ah, right. Fixing...
I don't know why, but that's the second time I made that mistake

> Power Consumption: 45W (typ), 30W (max) Eco Mode: 33W optimize, 24W conserve
Say, what?

I see code review has launched

@badp Ooo... nice

12:42 PM
weird, I just got unlogged and booted out of chat...

is it me or the firefox addon site is slow?

@badp It's just you. Erhm...

@YiJiang, what's the red/green colours mean?
ok, got it, has got/hasn't got
not immediately obvious...

@Benjol Not gotten / Gotten. I'm going to update it later

tick/cross works better for me
@YiJiang, you're listing golds only for the badges?

12:47 PM
Weird... the system doesn't recognize 'Strunk & White'
@Benjol No, there are also silver badges

you testing for Strunk and White by any chance?

@Benjol No, I checked the raw json data - it's an ampersand

'cos there's a typo there and on Quorum

When you see people getting copy editor without Strunk & White something's wrong...

which would have explained it for me

12:49 PM
@Benjol Yeah, I fixed that
I thought Quorum is the silver badge, but apparently convention is, so I swapped that out for convention

ok, by the way, change the badges title to 'Notable Badges', or 'Noteworthy Badges', or something like that. Or 'Relevant Badges'?

Right, good idea

Good morning everyone

I'd quite like the marketing spiel to be collapsible too, maybe even collapsed by default...
hi josh

@Benjol Sure. I'll add an option for that.

12:52 PM
Maybe even collapsed by default, or just showing the first few lines...

@Benjol hey there, how are you today?

And then add "order by any statistic" :)
@Josh, trying to work, not easy when @YiJiang's up to interesting stuff

hahaha, what're you up to @YiJiang?

I LOVE IT!
Where's the meta question/answer so i can upvote?????

12:54 PM
@Josh, you see what I mean about trying to work? :)
It started here:

Q: Moderator nomination possibly useful statistics

BenjolI found myself doing lots of clicking through to profiles to try and compare nominees with (what I consider to be) useful/interesting information. I've cobbled together an Excel file with some metrics, may help you with your decision, and possible inspire the dev team to put together something l...

@Josh Haven't posted it yet, though I should. Needs a bit more polishing

@YiJiang, I don't think you should

I sure do! Here I thoight I was being good by getting up early (7:30am EST) to get work done, ha

nominees could start trying to fiddle the volatile stuff
I think you should leave it till the nominations are fixed. then download it once, save as HTML, and voila

@Benjol There really aren't a lot of volatile stuff

12:55 PM
but still leave the random order :)
there will be if you manage to add chat, and last activity on meta

Yeah, but I really don't want to add those

some guys haven't been back in months, but that could be quickly changed if they knew people were looking at it.

30 X-domain HTTP request would be... pretty slow.

@YiJiang, ok, I forgive you

2 hours ago, by waffles
test run is over ... for the record ... out of 20 edits I just reviewed I had to reject 0 ..... requiring a comment made a huge diff ... I got at least 3 excellent anon-edits
@Josh this is very encouraging @waffles!
I hope this means that I am wrong to worry about people

12:59 PM
@Josh, the problem is a problem of scale
I think as long as there's no rep associated, it'll be ok

excellent point

but if they do add rep for editing retroactively, I'll probably double my rep :)

@Benjol Yeah, before our hearts and souls are tainted by the corrupting power of teh free internet repz, we all do things because we're altruistic

It is kinda sad that 2kers cannot get rep for edits anymore
because they can't get edits approved
because their edits are approved automagically

@badp, but we never did get rep

1:02 PM
yeah what is this you speak of @badp?

@Benjol approved edits will net the editor 2 reps up to 1k under current plans

oh, I see what you're saying

it'd be wrong to give 2kers 2 rep per edit, too easy to game the system

Would I mind an extra 1k rep for the ~500 edits I've made? Heck no. DO I need rep to motivate me to keep editing? no

"oh oh oh you forgot an apostrophe! +2 ca-ching! "

1:03 PM
I really don't know why, but S&W isn't getting recognised

But it is a bit unfair since this happened retroactivly
@YiJiang in your code?

@Josh Yeah, I checked the raw JSON data, and the two strings are the same, yet somehow it doesn't work

firebug? :-)
step through and see why not

Firebug is what I used to review the data

so apparently to get all bodies of questions, answers and comments under a certain tag, I must first get a list of questions via search/, then take the ids and pass them to questions/ for the actual content

1:05 PM
Meh, let me try something first

yay?

@YiJiang, for header text proposition:
This page was put together by @YiJiang (stackoverflow.com/users/313758)
The statistics are loaded dynamically from your browser.
The list is ordered randomly on each refresh, to avoid biasing viewers.
The statistics are presented as is, it is up to you to decide what their relative importance is.
The Noteworthy Badges are those which we consider to be relevant to the role of a moderator.
If you have any comments, or would like to see these statistics integrated into SO, please go here (meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/75454/…)

@Benjol I'll put that in, sure

BTW, you've corrected the meta link, but not the SO one

@Benjol I'm... incredibly brainless today, I don't know why

1:11 PM
@YiJiang, no no, don't do yourself down, you've just got an impatient customer breathing down your neck :)
Is it just me or are the chat oneboxes in meta completely out of date?
I get 'Jan 5'

@Benjol Erhmmm... weird. Let me check
Yup, see that too

@YiJiang NO, not you, you're supposed to be working :) hahaha

In [76]: text
Out[76]: u"The problem with all encompassing policies is that people tend to use those instead of using the brain and determining whether a question possesses or not the bad qualities that make game-rec's toxic for the site. \n What exactly is a game-rec? \n"

In [77]: re.findall("[^@][a-zA-Z]*", text)[:5]
Out[77]: [u'The', u' problem', u' with', u' all', u' encompassing']
:|
how in heaven did I match those spaces
oh, right, [^@]
<_<
I guss I want [a-zA-Z]+(?!@) instead
not

@YiJiang, I forgive you, for the publicist badge :)

@Benjol Hahaha... well, I've always wanted one of those shinies :P

1:23 PM
I've been wondering, do you think they check for intra-site links?

re.findall("(?<!@)[a-zA-Z]+", "@badp you suck")[:5] → ['adp', 'you', 'suck']

I'd imagine they'd have to, otherwise I could just go round editing every single internal link

@Benjol They don't, no

computers <3

Internal links are not counted

1:26 PM
Do you think it's a reasonable idea to ask the devs to put a link to your page at the top of the nominations, once it's ready?
Just linking it from meta won't be sufficient, I fear

@Benjol Meh, you're giving me far too much credit :) The page will probably collapse under the load

@YiJiang, well if that's more credit than you can handle, you can pass me some back :) I don't see why it would collapse, it'd be your api key which might get blocked though :)
(another reason to just post as html)

Dropbox has a bandwidth limit

@YiJiang it's pretty high

So get them (SO) to host it
:)

1:31 PM
the elections are a game!

@Sathya Hahaha

@Sathya Stop gaming the elections

@badp I am forced to now :( ( well, atleast for 8/24 hours )

@YiJiang, no joy on Strunk&White then. Drop back to just testing for Strunk? :)
@YiJiang (really, really sorry, but I'm full of ideas today). Could do with the tooltips on the badges to, for people who don't know what they mean... And consider adding Talkative

Hear hear hear: StackExchange™ MultiCollider SuperDropdown™ now on the chat pages!
(except in the room itself)
please test

1:41 PM
@balpha, ok, good stuff, not that I do much hanging around in the lobby :)
@balpha. by the way, is there an easy way to get the [rooms/posts] stats for a given user?
30 times :)

You mean your "talk to the candidates" API?

yup

What's the plan, exactly?

for each nominee I'd like to be able to show their chat 'engagement', which could be boiled down to rooms/posts. @Yi says that currently that would involve "30 X-domain HTTP request would be... pretty slow."
@balpha (The work in process (all @Yi's) is linked in the starred list, if you want to check it out)

I still think you should've done this on Google App Engine...
but it's too late now

1:49 PM
It's never too late! ..Err, what's going on?

Sorry, I'm just the PM, I follow my lead dev's advice on the matter :)

@badp Should've, yes. But I'd have to learn Python which... would be a little too late by the time I get to proficiency

@TimStone Somebody just volounteered to do the porting? :P

Oh, no, no...I have quite the backlog of things already. :P
Unless you meant you, in which case.
I don't even know what we're referring to really.

1:51 PM
@TimStone You said it wasn't too late to do the porting, I guess you have the time to!

LIES!
@YiJiang Oh...wow! That looks pretty neat

I'm having problem with the S&W badge
It looks for the string 'Strunk & White' in an array with this code:
if(interestedTags.indexOf(badges[i].name) > -1) {

@YiJiang not some funny & stuff?
(just stating the obvious, in case)

The JSON received goes:
 "name": "Strunk & White",
Somehow the only one that fails is that

@YiJiang I find string constants sometimes automatically fix things like this.

1:56 PM
@Moshe There are no constants in JavaScript
Firefox has const, but that's a Mozilla extension

So define it as a variable. It's the same idea.

interestedBadges = ['Sportsmanship', 'Civic Duty', 'Pundit', 'Electorate', 'Copy Editor', 'Strunk & White', 'Convention'];

Ok...

Have you tried adding interestedTags.indexOf("Strunk & White") just to see?
