Unless they're deletions by the post owner

@PavelShved no. I can't delete stuff.

@Shog9 you're the author of them

@TheUnhandledException, I'd go for a non-s/mime solution, but again, automation is key. The issue here is a group of doctors want to be able to email patient information. But that's gotta be secure, silly HIPAA and all. :P

@PavelShved oh, those nominations

@Shog9 :-D

8:01 PM
Looks like Jeff deleted them

@rchern Ugggggg!!!!

@rchern Hm? ePCR?

bastard

Yeah, I suspected that it was someone who considered them jokes...

@rchern Yeah GPG probably won't work. Maybe PGP...

8:01 PM
@PavelShved Undeleted yours.

@Shog9 Jeff would be angry

Yeah, well...

owww, hell of a typo

Protip: up-arrow edits. You can also edit and remove from the message menu (hover).

Has anyone else nominated someone besides themselves?

8:02 PM
@Shog9 yeah, there was someone

I have a really hard time voting for self-nominations. Wanting to be a moderator badly enough to volunteer seems like a great disqualifier

@Shog, the site has just started, how do you want people to trust others so blindingly well to nominate them for mod?

I only nominated myself as there was only one other at the time. I also stressed that I didn't want to take the place of anyone else.

@rchern Or maybe a secure wiki-like or webdav interface they can all log into, and they can email each other URLs for the wiki. But now we're really far from your original request!!

ChrisF for dictator!

8:03 PM
hehe

@badp Who said anything about trust?

@Shog9, there was someone nomminated by the other guy, but that proposal was deleted as well, since he declined.

@PavelShved ah, yes, I remember that.
Man, not being able to see deleted posts sucks.

@Shog9 You don't trust people you want to attach a diamond to?

@PavelShved Which is silly, because now how is a new visitor to that page supposed to know that User 4902 already declined?

8:04 PM
@badp trust must be earned

@PopularDemand Nah, too much responsibility ;)

It seems that someone who just loves to delete posts came there...
>_<

@Shog9 Indeed, you can't trust people on day 1, so it's unsurprising to see not much besides self nominations

@badp and that's my point - nominating yourself immediately makes me distrust you
I'd be willing to give Pavel a try, since he was honest(ish) in the comments about why he might not be a good moderator

@Shog9 that's an equation that doesn't have a solution.

8:06 PM
@ChrisF That hardly sounds like something God-Emperor ChrisF the Uber would say....

To be honest the biggest reason why I wouldn't diss a diamond is I want to see the diamond tools =P you can fix that with a few screenshots I believe
Actually, now that I've unlocked 10k mod tools on Gaming, I've found out they're so disappointingly meh I don't actually care anymore about reaching anything more than 3k rep

@PopularDemand Ha!

@badp Man, I could go for some tools made out of diamond.

The only real nice part of having 10k is inline retagging. I guess some JS trickery can be made to do that.

@badp I'm expecting the thresholds to change to the "normal" ones when the sites leave beta

8:08 PM
But we really do need to make the rest of Stack Exchange abilities line up with credit card terminology.

@ChrisF Indeed, but now I don't really care anymore about losing those tools

@TheUnhandledException, they're actually ok with getting an email with a link to a site that requires login. They realize that's probably going to be an expensive commercial route though and thus suddenly don't like it.

So I'd really like to get back to 3K on all the sites I'm interested in so I can carry on voting to close

@ChrisF Yep, on Gaming I'm 520 rep away with, what, 20 days to go? :/

I'm nearly 2/3rds there on DIY and half way on Programmers. I'd like to get close on UI and Web Apps but I think I might be spreading myself too thin at the moment
As long as I keep answering I'll get there in the end. I even managed to get to 800 on Server Fault!

8:11 PM
You people and your earning of reputation based on "knowledge" about "things."

you can vote to close on WA ya know :P

@rchern - I'm expecting to lose mod powers when it comes to the vote ;)

Everyone always talks about how the 10k tools are disappointing and they only use one or two of them, but everyone lists different ones :)
2

ahh. good point. after the vote...

@MichaelMrozek I didn't list any!

The only real nice part of having 10k is inline retagging. I guess some JS trickery can be made to do that.

@badp I didn't know there was already a 10K user on Gaming. Is that the first on any of the new sites?

@ChrisF No, Cooking had a 10k user first

Wow

yeah, @hobodave, a user at 8k too

End of the very first chat one-day beta:

@balpha <3

@rchern Sorry stepped AFK. I'll think about this and let you know if I have any ideas for you :-)

@Shog9 anyway thanks for restoring my nomination. I can't be a mod, you already know, but I must admit that I upvoted it... just to make that TomWijsmann look miserable :-D

@MichaelMrozek I find the vote split at 1K very useful

8:17 PM
Lots of people say that. I'm not sure I get it.

@ChrisF I agree, especially on MSO

I find it extremely useful on meta, less useful on the parent sites

@Shog9 I don't want any confrontation between you and Jeff so if it comes to that delete it back without hesitation. :-)

@rchern I like it because it shows which questions/answers are more heavily divided.

Good bye everyone.
/quit
ahh.

8:18 PM
@PavelShved Later!

you can always spot those irc users :P

/kick rchern
:(

@PavelShved Jeff can lock it. There's no conflict ;-0

I would say something here, but a certain developer is here...I'm sure it would backfire

8:21 PM
WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?

@rchern What's that about balpha being powerless to kick you? How dare you say such a thing

DEVELOPER FIGHT!!!!

oh come on, I purposely didn't even nick alert you.

@rchern "developer" alerts him :-)

I FELT A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE

8:21 PM
as does "sound"
as in, "I wish you could turn on sound for only the rooms you've created"

lol

Why haven't SO and SU got the "about" link? All the other sites (except MSO) have

@ChrisF It's at the bottom

@MichaelMrozek I meant at the top with the "meta", "faq", "chat" etc links

8:23 PM
I guess this changed between 2010.9.13.1 and 2010.9.16.6

I didn't realize SF had it at the top; I figured it was different on the SE betas because they're new

presumably "chat" was making it feel crowded, so a new build moves "about" to the bottom - but either way, "chat" only appears if a certain flag is set

@MarcGravell - Both SU and SF are at 2010.9.16.5

@ChrisF It's also on the top of both of those

@MichaelMrozek I'm not seeing "about" at the top of SU

8:26 PM
@ChrisF Cached?

@MichaelMrozek That's odd as I didn't see it at work either

@MichaelMrozek, hat trick, very nice.
(The last three messages I've starred are all yours.)

demands some sort of badge

hands Michael a • Popular badge
Grats, you have the very first black badge in the history of now!

I wonder if it doesn't show once you hit a certain rep?

8:29 PM
@ChrisF Ouch :P

@ChrisF No, you can see the chat link when logged out

@badp We're talking about the about link at the top

@MichaelMrozek My thinking is that if you've hit 2K, 3K? on the site you should know what it's about
@badp Wot @MichaelMrozek said
Seems too trivial to ask a question about on MSO

If you have 10k rep "about" is replaced by "tools"
is it relevant?

@ChrisF Nothing is too trivial to down-vote on MSO.

8:32 PM
@MichaelMrozek You'll have to downgrade that Hat Trick badge to a silver; I'm easily amused.

@badp There you go - a nice easy explanation I hadn't thought of. I'm happy now

hey, Chrome users - how do I select text from within a link?

select more than the link, copy it somewhere, then select the relevant part :)

peh

@balpha This is what I always do.

8:34 PM
hey, English users - is "biaseness" a real word?

Q: How to change CSS using jquery

user449914I am trying to change the css using jquery: (I am a very early jquery beginner) $(init); function init() { $("h1").css("backgroundColor", "yellow"); $("#myParagraph").css({"backgroundColor":"black","color":"white"); $(".bordered").css("border", "1px solid black"); } What am I missing her...

@Shog9 A real word? I can't even tell what it's supposed to mean.

@PopularDemand I did google it first. It didn't help.

Time to quit SO for the day. I down voted 4 anwsers in 1 thread and posted a rant.

Q: Why biaseness on stackoverflow?

@PeterAjtai you're just getting started. Stick around, more people will surely answer...

8:36 PM
@Shog9 I wouldn't expect it to. Google only knows everything, and that clearly doesn't fall under "everything."

@Shog9, no I don't think it is a word, though I get what he /she means is asking.

Bias against people with high rep and for people with low rep. This is the opposite of the usual daily complaint

Well, based on context, it's about bias. So we need to edit in a noun form of the word bias. I propose using "bias."

Okay, I have a quiz for you. The first one to answer correctly (SO employees excluded!) gets a T-Shirt with their very own unicorn on it (like this one, but the unicorn for their own meta.so email address) -- assuming spreadshirt ships to their country.

@MichaelMrozek "Dog bites man," that's not news....

8:37 PM
@PopularDemand too easy. Try again.

@balpha I'm ready! hit me...

no fair - I feel all excluded now

@balpha want waffle t-shirt

:o

You have one minute after I post the question.

8:38 PM
poor @Marc

@Shoq9 - (Edited original message) - I hope no one else answers that question. Each new answer points out another correct piece of code and says it's incorrect.

can I play?

@balpha We also all have Google, so this is going to be curious.

oh wait you haven't asked yet

8:38 PM
@PeterAjtai that's jQuery on SO for you

@badp Damn - that's the answer I was thinking of

Okay, here goes:

@Feeds wtf HOW???

the easiest possible thing to test, and yet no one does...

8:38 PM
The first one-day test run off the chat was under which domain? I want the full link, starting with "http://", so the chat automatically turns it into a link that I can click on.

@Feeds: no @marc

I'm out.

@PopularDemand later!

run off?

... of the contest.

8:39 PM
there was a chat run-off?

30 seconds

I wasn't aware of chat until the 3-day beta.

oh no

15

idk, random guess

winner!

@badp we have a winner

):

\o/

8:40 PM
Congrats @badp.

Awesome job @badp
Did you know that or was that a guess?

Now, to find out why @balpha wanted that to be a clickable link....

@TheUnhandledException Was looking for it on the gaming meta, where I sure had a lnk

10ks on meta, here's the proof: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/55907/…

@badp Nice work :-)

8:41 PM
I'm still stuck on there was a one-day test run?

that's the first link I tried (fail)

I need to sell some rep on SO to get 10k on meta

I'm quite impressed that we (the team) remembered to take down the DNS for it

unrelated ---- Hey whatever happend to the "Meta Chat Beta - Bad Poetry oh Noetry" post? I've been searching for it................... was it deleted? I hope not :(

gues we must have set a short TTL

8:41 PM
@MichaelMrozek Two for one deal, limited time only.

how's that for a tee

looks angry

currently installing chrome 7 and IE9 in my VM... looking fun so far.

i don't have 10K anywhere that i could sell! lol

crap - Avast just popup a toast about Talk Like a Pirate Day. I tried to get a screen shot but just missed
Apparently I could turn the UI pirate!

8:43 PM
@rchern He's already halfway there, you don't need to sell him the full 10k.

@balpha - That unicorn looks like it has a zit on its forehead.

Eh, I guess I meant trade between sites. >_>

I'm 150 away from having 20k total; I demand 10k on meta once I have that

@badp mail me your postal address and I'll order tomorrow

@MichaelMrozek You know, that's totally not unreasonable

8:44 PM
(spreadshirt does in fact deliver to italy)

@balpha your tshirt budget is way over the top, you know that right? :D

Hmm, you don't have 20k total @Michael?

oh, I've been selling SO user email addresses to spammers for a while, so I have a few euros to spare

8:48 PM
@rchern I meant just SO + MSO

@balpha Joke's on you, I used mailinator.

@MichaelMrozek, oh...well that's lame!

Fantastic first sentence of a question: I'm running a PHP script (CLI) to calculate a big thing. It will probably be an (almost) infinite loop

@Shog9 Boooooooo. Boo-urns.

8:50 PM
now, I know I'm just ESL, but isn't "bias" a freaking proper noun?

@balpha No. But George L. Bias III is.

@balpha, if diamond mods have access to all data on careers.so I've put the mailing address there

And the kicker is the last sentence * Can I some way dump some memory (say like every 1000th run) so I can keep running it forever?*

oooh, Google Chome Render just crashed!

It should be "Why is there so much bias toward high-rep users on Stack Overflow"

8:51 PM
@badp no, we don't

@PeterAjtai HAHAHA

thankfully

Bug: Click downvote, click downvote again to undo it because you didn't mean to click it in the first place, click the score to expand the +/- breakdown and the downvote is counted in the breakdown.
Unless someone else downvote/undownvoted immediately after I did.

@PopularDemand That doesn't normally happen; are you sure your downvote retracted properly? Try refreshing

Sep 13 at 19:06, by balpha
Oh, and when I pull my wifi cable out of my esata port halfway through generating the flair and at the same time dance the Ententanz, I get a weird error message from Farmville. Please fix that.

8:52 PM
There is an outstanding bug I think about retracting a vote right after you cast it dehighlighting the arrow without actually changing your vote

@MichaelMrozek I did, that's what led to the second half of my report.

@PopularDemand the down-voting code on SO has to resemble some ancient wiring cabinet by now. Please don't report any more bugs on it - I fear further changes will break it completely.

Still 0 after Ctrl+F5.

That line only has one star. Please fix this immediately

@Shog9 Well maybe if you didn't push it past its tolerances all the time....

8:53 PM
SO should probably hire Shog9 to stress-test the downvoting system. Although I suppose he already does it for free

@PopularDemand Hey, man - if it doesn't start to smoke, I'm not really using it.

TWSS

@Shog9 Not smoke. It causes the users you downvote to steam

@MichaelMrozek pretty sure my up/down ratio is still around 3/1 - no ChetB outcome for me!

@Shog9 It doesn't count if you're doing it ironically.

Argh, sometimes I hate people! I received this request from one of our client: "Please add the following to the header to the righ, in black text, 1/2 the size of the current header text: *text to be added followed*"

@balpha, even though this question may disqualify me, what was the password to that one day chat test?

Their header has silvery-gray text... over a dark blue gradient. So I did as they asked, added the text in black to the right of the existing text
She comes back and says, "This must be fixed ASAP. I needed the text in the same gray, and it should be on the next line. As I said, the existing text should be broken into three lines". WTF?
ID-10T ERROR

@badp chatmeup
I had to look it up myself

@balpha oh, right, I recall that now.

was the one-day test announced?

Only in a meta question

you missed "bassists"
this is the sort of thing that makes me proud of SO: through selfless, collaborative editing, this question slowly approaches something answerable.

23 hours ago, by balpha
SE sites need a "This question was recently mentioned in a chat room. Don't be surprised by incomprehensible edit wars" notification

(answerable would be "bassinets")
@balpha I think it's called "lock"...

eeexcellent

9:26 PM
the OP now edited back to "bassets"
I'm starting to feel bad

/me hands balpha a beer
I have a hard time sympathizing with someone who, upon being criticized, immediately jumps to the conclusion that the entire site is biased against him.

@Shog9: And doesn't understand apparently the difference between graphics programming and math.

9:42 PM
/ still doesn't understand why listing requirements and a tool isn't the same thing as asking a question

10:01 PM
Did you know? The tenth root of 1 second (as a fraction of a day) is more than 7 hours 42 minutes

10:12 PM
@Shog9 I'm generally annoyed with those people, but that didn't mean people with the ability to edit needed to put him through hell
I read that edit history thinking "what in the world is wrong with you people?"
Then I noticed Weblog's gravatar and most of my confusion was answered

Welbog showed up late. He gets no credit.
And the edit history would have been far less confusing if we hadn't all had to keep making the same corrections, over and over again, to the rest of the post.

@Shog9 You changed one fictional word to another fictional word to be funny. He got in a rather lengthy edit war with the author of the post, intentionally making it more confusing. There's something of a difference

huh?
Are you getting confused because the author changed his name to Toronto?
Welbog made all of three edits - two involving only tags

And that makes it ok? He added the tag [seabass], the OP rolled back for obvious reasons, and he rolled back again to bring it back. That's seriously not cool
Maybe I'm missing something, but it sure looks like 4 high-rep MSO users ganged up on that random new guy because he had a poorly worded question

Yeah, you're missing a lot
First non-OP revision: I improved the grammar in the title, replaced one misspelling with another, removed erroneous speculation on voter identity, and dug up and added a link to his deleted question.
Next revision: Jon B replaces fake word with real word
Next revision: OP rolls back all third-party edits

10:28 PM
Hey @GraceNote!

(at this point, things start getting crazy, likely because the OP himself had just turned a heavily-edited but reasonably-readable question back into a mess)

Hi... The?

So Welbog shows up, replaces one misspelled word with a real (but probably incorrect) word, and edits tags
Arowbot does the same

@GraceNote The user formerly known as Josh :-)

OP (finally) adds the contents of his question

10:30 PM
I can tell from your gravatar. There might be more of a name but I'm far too exhausted to bother hovering

welbog adds seabass tag, OP rolls it back, welbog re-adds it
Jon B does an "all your base" joke
OP rolls back to "bassets"

@GraceNote tribute to

A: Naming the Tavern

Chacha102The Unhandled Exception --Suggested by Fosco

Ah, now I see the full name.

Jon B gives up and re-writes the entire title (again...)
I add title & tags & tweak formatting for the quoted question
Jon Seigel fixes tags

Seigel sneaked an edit in all of that mess? Wow

10:32 PM
And no part of that seems...unnecessary? The OP shouldn't have rolled back the corrections, but revisions 6-13 were pretty much nonsense
Apparently in the time it took us to discuss this the OP has blanked the question twice and random finally locked it, so I guess he's more at fault than I thought

Unnecessary? The whole thing was unnecessary

Feature request: change this room's name to Foo Bar

@MichaelMrozek yeah, there was maybe one edit by the OP in that whole mess that could be considered "in good faith". And even that (editing in question text) was only necessary because he wouldn't just undelete his question.

one more upvote in the next 1:30 = 200 for the day :)
@Shog9 the revision history of that is really hilarious

so yeah, we didn't have to play with him, but the joke edits were fairly innocuous (replacing one error with another - the proper response should be to fix the error not roll back to a different error)

10:36 PM
@PeterAjtai SO or MSO? :D

@badp The MSO seabass thread ;)

Here, have a downvote

>:(

@Shog9 I suppose. Adding joke tags and rolling back the OPs attempts to undo it looks really bad, but I guess the consensus is nobody cares if the OP is being rude

Well, there's that, but more to the point no one cares if the OP doesn't care
I mean, he rolled back to a bogus title. Thrice. At least.

10:38 PM
and he changed his username to Toronto from Harpreet

@Shog9 I assumed that part was unintentional and he just didn't notice, since the title was changed on him so many times in a row

He noticed. He commented on it.

@Shog, it just looks like Toronto wants a suspension ;)

That's confusing - you mean Toronto wants Toronto to be suspended because Toronto impersonated Toronto.

There seem to be people who honestly believe that SO exists solely to do their homework for them. Maybe it's the language barrier, I donno... But they come off like aristocrats talking to rather dull servants vs. students humbly seeking knowledge.

10:41 PM
Hello All

@Chacha102 points at the room name accusingly

@Chacha102 howdy

@badp Did you miss the whole conversation about not changing the name? It was last Friday I think

You can go back and read it :)

Yes I did miss it

I don't think there were any ladies...

So there was just one man?
That's not a jury

@Chacha102 I shared that transcript with a friend, that was so hysterical

That's a judge, or an executioner

@Chacha102 cept rchern, but she wanted nothing to do with it!

is that a contraction of "disappearing" and "point"?

@TheUnhandledException Don't worry, l33tn3ss comes with its own set of baggage. ;)

@GeorgeMarian And the expectation that one acts more seriously than I normally do ;-)
@LasseVKarlsen DO WANT!!!!

@rchern waiting...

@TheUnhandledException LOL Yah, pretty much. :)

i'm supposed to act seriously?!?
