I'm hoping I can get one more favorite on the "interesting questions" question, then I'll have my first favorite badge.
I love that feature-request, sure wish they'd implement that one.

Q: How about a "Vote not to close" option to counter the "Vote to close"?

BFreeI'm not a frequent visitor of user voice, so this could very well have already been suggested there, and I apologize in advance if it has. My request is simple: Many times, there will be a question where some people feel like it should be closed. At the same time, I'll feel like it's a perfectly...

I still think voting ruined closing

Shog9 said, First read that as "joined the cooking in latex sites".
Now that made me laugh.

dmckee's a kinky dude...
Was thinking about it the other day though. I hate closing questions. It's cumbersome, slow, and even more cumbersome and slow to undo.
But it's all we've got.
Originally, closing was fast, and just as fast to undo. A new user shows up on the site, posts something unreadable, no problemo - you close it & edit or ask for clarification. When it comes, you re-open. It worked great - and then a handful of folks ruined it for everyone.

Still seems to work ok though.
There's just a sort of lag.

That's the trouble though, the lag... By the time you get through the cycle, the question has already dropped off the first page of questions. Yeah, it gets bumped - briefly - and will show up longer in niche tags... but it's still a waste.

12:09 AM
@Peter, I'm going to delete my comments on that question I gave you the bounty on to clean it up. Thanks for taking care of that.

12:22 AM
@LanceRoberts +1 favorited the interesting questions question

@Lance - No problem. Thanks. That's my second bounty on meta.... Haven't tried for one on SO yet....

@Fosco, thanks, I owe you one, I've been eyeing that badge for a long time.
It's a badge that really makes you depend on the kindness of strangers.

np
that reminds me, i was the 100th upvote on that same question for your other gold badge
but 25 others hopped on top
2 gold badges from one question.. nice job @LanceRoberts !

Yeh it's nice, but I'd trade both badges to see it become [status-completed].
Wow, I just notice that the ASKSQL site got rid of the Enthusiast and Fanatic badge, so now the Enthusiast I had says Unknown.
I don't understand why I don't have the Generalist badge on Meta, Odata says I'm way past it.
Actually, I guess the question is why NO ONE has the Generalist badge on Meta.

Q: Will the generalist badge be implemented in Meta?

Lance RobertsIt doesn't look like anyone has received the Generalist badge on Meta. Will this be implemented here at some date?

2:16 AM
@LanceRoberts Good catch.
Also props to @Waiwai for the speedy and accurate answer, even though s/he's not here.
@Shog9 Wait, what was the "old-style" close behavior? I've never known anything other than the current system.

@PopularDemand There didn't used to be voting; any user with enough rep to close could just close

@MichaelMrozek I dread the day where we have to have five people agree on edits.

I installed the beta, updated it, found the interesting User Studies feature, still can't use it
runs Firefox as root for the autoupdater. SIGH

@JoePhillips tsk

lol, FF4b6 is completely broken

11:25 AM
@badp, I did the 3.6.9 update last week, and my computer died unexpectedly. Though I don't see how it could be anything other than a coincidence...

1 hour later…
12:45 PM
Thanks for locking that post @MarcGravell

Which set of urls do you like better?
/GenerateHtml/{guid} and /GenerateImage/{guid}
/Generate/html/{guid} and /Generate/image/{guid}
/Generate/{guid}?format=html and /Generate/{guid}?format=image

no idea, sorry. (Anything as long as I'm not typing the guid :)

@rchern the last one

Maybe the third is more 'correct'...? There was a question (on meta, I believe) about this the other day wrt to SO - that the 'view modifiers' should be in the query string

there's likely to be a theme parameter added at some point in addition to the format parameter. a nobeta parameter was suggested also...so parameters may become plentiful, heh.

1:09 PM
@badp you're right - FF4b6 a complete mess. It also managed to wipe all my custom search engines

1:44 PM
I fixed FF4b6 by disabling the add-on compatibility add-on
Apparently they need an add-on compatibility add-on compatibility add-on to ensure add-on compatibility add-on's compatibility with Firefox.

@bapd lol

Still -- there's no way around it. Switching tabs takes far too much time.

I should make a Firefox extension that just installs Chrome and removes Firefox.
6

By the time it takes me to ctrl-tab between twelve tabs, Firefox barely has barely changed to the second

So why are you still using it?

1:49 PM
I want to give it a chance to shine.
I'm explaining why it's letting me down
It doesn't quite suck, but really lacks in responsiveness

Following my machine's implosion, I've borrowed an old one with Firefox vOld on, it's surprising how little I'm noticing the difference...

how old is Old?

Not on it right now, can't remember, but I think it's 2.0 or thereabouts
It's slow, but the whole machine is slow...
I installed Chrome though ;)

Besides, quite incomprehensibly, FF4's new interface is Windows-only
(is it enabled in OSX too?)
Linux is stuck with the FF3 interface.

They lost me with the theme thing (if that's what it's called - where you rollover special links and it changes the skin), I mean, what earthly use???

1:57 PM
Personas
People complained changing themes required restarting the browser, so...

oh puhlease

status-restart-your-damned-browser

@badp and they don't work with custom themes

@PiersMyers Not like there's any custom theme for FF or Chrome that I like, mind you.
Chrome's themes are especially horrible
are there Chrome themes where, yknow, you can read the text over the backgrounds?

@badp try Operetta, works pretty well and looks like Opera

2:01 PM
I think the only thing I've ever bothered to change a skin on was winamp :)

yeah, when Winamp just was a music player
but noooo, Winamp had to get games and a webbrowser and God knows what!

I miss those days..

The thing is, why would I bother to skin the bit I'm never looking at (on a browser)

@PiersMyers Not compatible with FF4b6 :)
Relatedly -- does any of you here have a Wii?

nope

Tobias KienzlerWikipedia, when browsed via the Wii's Internet Channel, has a nice large font view. I'd like to be able to browse Gaming.SE from a Wii in a similar fashion, too. Wish I could close with "migrate to MSO" reason

Greetings, how's everyone doing today?

@badp yeah I know, not much is at the moment - I have about 45 extensions in FF3.6.9

fine, almost time to go home ;)

Hi Josh

@PiersMyers how many hours does it take to start up? :)

2:05 PM
@PiersMyers Life on the edge, eh? :)

@Benjol Life on the edge is using nightlies every day

@badp it's not that slow, just a couple of seconds - once it's open for the day, it stays open

but what user would be mad enough to do th--
oh wait, I do with Chromium on Linux :D

@badp I prefer the dailies every night :)

2:06 PM
Talking about speed, anyone here tried the hybrid drive jeff mentioned in his blog? (codinghorror.com/blog/2010/09/…)

@Benjol woah!
DO WANT!

yeah, I just checked, here they're not too expensive either...

okay. Thanks for playing, Firefox 4, but you're the weakest link
@Benjol he published it less than five hours ago

@badp, I didn't mean has anyone tried it because of his blog :)

If these are released in 1TB sizes I might replace the drives in my Virtualization server with them
if they'll work OK in a RAID5 config that is.

2:14 PM
ok guys/gals, I'm gone, see you later

Later @Benjol!
So @Fosco I've barely looked into that project you invited me to -- I have a crazy busy week but I'll be able to help more probably this weekend
Good news is I think I might have fixed that f-ing awful Flash bug which has been a pain in my backside
rolling out a new beta soon, we'll see if the error reports stop ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Cool, hope you really fixed the bug :) .. no worries on the project, it's a long-term thing.. I didn't do anything last night except redact my password and upload the code.

2:32 PM
so, um, announcement...
StackFlair now supports image output! (:

@rchern Going to put it in signatures and stuff :)

@rchern nice work!

(:
Report any issues to the github site. crosses fingers that there aren't any

Actually I have a feature request

2:40 PM
I like feature requests better than bugs.

@rchern Me too! Have a star :-)

hehe

anyone here run water cooled rigs?

Not me @Piers
You might want to ask in the SuperUser room or on ServerFault chat

Hello
Is anyone in here form Oklahoma?

2:43 PM
Hey @Chacha102. NC here

I'm sorry

@PiersMyers My pc is liquid cooled.

Anyway, how's everyone doing today

Well thanks, and you @Chacha102?

Good

@rchern That's awesome

@Fosco you ever have problems with build up of particles that block impellers (I have Zalman LQ1000 case)?

@PiersMyers I haven't, but I also haven't had it very long yet.. It's only a couple months old. How did you discover the buildup?

@PiersMyers Computer Plaque?!?

2:46 PM
@Fosco the impeller gets slower and the case beeps thinking the water flow is not high enough - need to flush the system to clear it

@badp, honestly, I'm not sure if a file extension can be used as a parameter like that. I will check though. Assuming I add themes, how would you expect that represented in the url?

This is why I don't have a water cooled system @Piers :-) Seems too complicated to me, I am scared of them :-)

@PiersMyers hmm.. that's not cool.. I wonder if I'm going to have to deal with that. I think my system is sealed though.

@TheUnhandledException it's ok most of the time and my CPU is running at 20 degrees C

@rchern /generate/{id}/{theme}.png

2:48 PM
&theme=winter&nobeta=true

it doesn't have to be ".png" , just an image extension (it's just to fool the forum software)

@Fosco depends on what flow indicator you have. Closed systems might be fine

well, i'm returning a png and setting the content type to image/png so .png makes sense :P

@badp I think you can add that yourself... just add another parameter.. &badphack=blah.png

Yeah, I'm not asking for .gif support :)
@Fosco they also check for the question mark

2:50 PM
@badp PNG FTW!

@TheUnhandledException ding ding ding

I'm a little worried about the number of parameters (and these are just what I'm thinking about now!): format, theme, nobeta, option to just use 1 site, maybe allow for a larger size...

@rchern Worried about the size of the query string?

@rchern, I understand that and would not complain if the forum-compatible version doesn't support as many options

2:52 PM
Hi guys

Hey @Sergio

Hi

@badp then I guess you're out of luck..

The basic parameterless version is fine (especially since I'm considering to use it to push a beta :P)

Not really the size of the querystring as I'm not really close to that at all...but if I use /option1/option2/option3.format then parameters become required rather than optional

2:53 PM
yeah, that would suck

I could encrypt the parameters into a single value, but that still won't fix the file extension issue.

@rchern What if you do:

You could probably use a URL Rewriting script to make them /option1/option2 style yet still optional

/option1=val1/option2=val2/option3=val3/
or /option1.val1/option2.val2/option3.val3/
That's what I do with canonical URLs

I'm not sure I could have = in a route like that

2:56 PM
Ahhh
What language @rchern?

c# .net

Ah, I know nothing then :-)

Are you trying to make prettier URLs?

I know in PHP I have URLs like /option1.val1/option2.val2/option3.val3/, so I can say for example: /imageType.png/imageSize.300x300/bgcolor.ff0000/, or: `/imageType.png/bgcolor.ff0000/`for a default imageSize
but it's a custom built framework which understands such URLs because I taught it to...

anyone here programming for the WP7

3:00 PM
@Sergio, github.com/rchern/StackFlair/issues#issue/3 with the understanding that several more parameters will soon be integrated also and that parameters being optional is nicer.

@SergioTapia Not me, sorry :-(

@rchern Ah i see - that seems like a cool application and I see the problem you're facing. are you the developer of that application?

Why, do you have praise or a bug? >_>

MWAHAHA - praise, it seems like a great little app I would use.

@rchern haha, I like how the answer depends on his position :-)

3:02 PM
What language is it written in?

6 mins ago, by rchern
c# .net

Oh, in that case, yes, yes I am the developer.

I'm tempted to voice my opinion but that'd skew things to the point I might as well not asked this.

@badp Depends... not if exactly as many people here like you as dislike you.

If I spoke I'd skew things either way. If I'm liked people'd agree with me. If I'm disliked they'd disagree. Just star with your head :P

3:58 PM
@badp You missed my point. If you're evenly liked and disliked, then all other things being equal, your influence would have no net effect.
That said, I'm going with option D, abstention. I have no interest in the ad contest.

@PopularDemand That's option C, neither ad is good enough to shake you out of your uninterest and be actively liked

@badp Then what about people who like them both and can't decide?

@PopularDemand They can, yknow, star both and thus "downvote" the neither option :)

@badp Questionable election practices. Hm.

@PopularDemand If I didn't like how starring worked for voting, I wouldn't have chosen stars for voting.

4:05 PM
@badp Questionable.

@PopularDemand I am doing the questions here =P
okay, screw starocracy, I'm giving the +250 to StackApplet

status-closed
Starring is not a substitute for polls.

status-happy
@rchern disagree

@badp That wasn't even one of the options!

@PopularDemand It was option C, "none of the recent entries are good enough so consider older ones as well."
Bounty-wise, I was preferring those two as they were more recent.

4:11 PM
And "starocracy"? Shouldn't it be, I dunno, "astrocracy"? "Stellocracy"?

A: Strange programming-related dreams

Tim GoodmanI once dreamed that for some reason I had to sort a list of positive integers without using any boolean comparisons like <, >, ==, !=, etc. I ended up solving it (in the dream) by repeatedly subtracting one from all the numbers and then attempting to divide by them and catching divide by z...

^ a very interesting dream/problem/answer.

@Fosco Only on Programmers SE....

yeah, so?

@Fosco No followup, that was my whole thought.

5:32 PM
@PopularDemand They come and go. The "auto comment when closing as duplicate" thing also breaks intermittently. I haven't been able (or particularly willing) to find a good way of reproducing these though.

@Shog9 Yeah, I didn't think it was worth pursuing.

A: What are some great examples of on-topic questions for Stack Overflow?

Shog9One of my all-time favorites: How do emulators work and how are they written? It's a huge, broad question on a huge, broad topic... Nice work there, @Shog9.

Ah, thanks
There are so many good examples, but if I had to pick two (for example, if SO was a proposal on A51) it'd be something like that: very broad and very narrow

Hm, I have the option to create an alias for my new e-mail account. Choices, choices.

Who thought it would be a good idea to decrease the tag length limit from 25 to 24?

@badp Someone whose monitor is only 120 characters wide?

@PopularDemand "Lord Demand"

Perhaps "Shog9@..."

yay for short meetings!

6:30 PM
@PopularDemand I don't know, it's challenging to fit game titles into tags
having the tag length decreased is just plain bad
considered game titles are basically the only form of tagging we do, it's doubly as bad

@badp FWIW I had no idea you were talking about the Gaming SE.
Are tag aliases allowed to be longer?

let's find out...
gimme a 26-char tag name

There is a 'close for duplicate' loop hitting these missing profile questions, I'm lost on which one is the true original. Definitely looks like SO rolled out something a little too quickly.

backwards compatibility tends to not be a big priority on SO

@lance, spot checks shows things closed as dupes leading to meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/64439/… with @Jeff's answer...

6:38 PM

@Shog9 [shog9-the-sequel-noone-saw]

nope, looks like they closed that hole
so no long tag names anywhere

Longest tag name

is the longest tag name
25 characters

@Shog9 qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm

@rchern The Launchpad one is older, but I like the profile one better.
but they both have 2 vote-to-close-as-dupe on them

6:49 PM
@LanceRoberts Wow, I didn't realize how many of these there are. I've only seen three, and they were all closed quickly.

e.g., Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions

@rchern tags are [a-zA-Z0-9-]* only
@PopularDemand tsk tsk tsk. The site isn't about English-speaking games, it's about games. All games.
The question has to be in English, but why should the game be so?
Besides, "Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions" (30 chars) is an English example of something that doesn't fit
or "Need For Speed: Most Wanted" (26 chars)

I wasn't being serious, heh.
@PopularDemand, just because someone did that doesn't mean it is ok or correct...
