12:54 AM
guess it's a slow Sunday night, right?

1:06 AM
I'm rather pitifully at work right now

1:20 AM
I'm making a StackApp! :P

I don't know what StackApp...

an app that uses the SE api

Check out the last alinea of his text... :D
@Shog9: Heh... Now I understand why my Q had a hotness spike, it's starred here. :-)

lol, I'm wondering why the people on this Enterprise episode aren't answering the door, and it's this chat application
I should know, it uses the TNG door chime anyways

1:44 AM
does copying your profile to associated accounts copy over a new openid you've added?

2:16 AM
If it does I'm going to be annoyed with myself for having done that manually

hehe well it didn't see to

1 hour later…
3:18 AM
@TomWij Yeah, that wasn't my intention, but oh well... At least you have plenty of holy wars to choose from now ;-)

2 hours later…
5:11 AM
morning all... (morning for me, anyway)

g'night

Make the most of the end of your weekend there :)

6:10 AM
hi guys
it's strange - i can't find room about the main branch - SO

@Nakilon, read the blog:
> stackoverflow.com will be the last site to get it because of its immense volume.

ok, thanks

6:26 AM
tbh, I think "The Tavern" is kinda doing just that...
since meta.chat feeds from meta, which is mainly (but not exclusively) the SO addicts

@MarcGravell, yup. As it stands, you could just rename chat.meta. to chat., I'm not sure it would change much...
Except for more orange :)

chat.meta was the public beta, so it follows that we have all dregs and urchins etc in here ;p
Actually, I'm really positive about how SF are using theirs now that it is available to all SF users. Lots of rooms on server/product themes
The thing with meta.chat is that it is still the beta, just communicated on things like the SO blog. Mainly the insanely addicted SO folks. When we have a broader spectrum of users I expect that some rooms will granulate along similar lines.
Still always a place for a tavern, though.

Yes, it's interesting to see how things develop here, the one-stop-hanging-out place is definitely the Tavern
I'm not sure that I've observed people coalescing into a discussion which they then take elsewhere to a new room.
Though I have seen bits of discussion booted to an existing room

6:44 AM
I don't think I've ever seen enough different discussions going on that splitting into separate rooms was warranted

@MichaelMrozek, well conversations sometimes drift - I've seen stuff from here transferred over to chat feedback (and vice-versa), and sometimes across to sandbox.
But to me, it seems that subject-specific discussions have difficulty getting off the ground. But then I'm probably not in the right time-zone for seeing high activity...

7:02 AM
@MarcGravell Hey! I can quit any time I want!

7:17 AM

Q: How can I tell the "windows security center" that I'm an "antivirus"?

rainwe are developing an anti-virus, I'm trying to find out how can we tell the operating system -windows XP in this case- that our software is an anti-virus. I want that the OS recognize our software as an anti-virus and the security center list it.

7:32 AM
My tsql is rusty, how can I fill a temp table with a range of values (0 - 20, for example)?

select top 20 row_number from somewhere bigger than 20?
(just thinking off the top of my head)
of course, you could just loop...

7:49 AM
Morning

@MarcGravell, yeah, I went with looping, not great, but it's just for playing on SEDE
@Ikke, hi

@Benjol What is your timezone?

hmmm.... I thought that showed the profile. Anyway, @Ikke - click on @Benjol's name, and it'll show you his activity graph ;p

@MarcGravell Is each bar an hour?

@MarcGravell, so the more apposite question is: do you chat from home or work? :)

8:10 AM
@Ikke - yes

@MarcGravell I get an error sending a message

@Benjol - I've given up trying to track the difference these days.

@MarcGravell Is there a minimum length of 3?

me too; investigating

@MarcGravell Ok
Hmm, now it got sent

8:12 AM
error log looks empty - definitely getting problems, though

@MarcGravell , the 'you' in that question was me ;)
(I got several retry messages for that)

yes; I'm watching fiddler and I have the servers up in front of me...
it looks to have cleared
nope, scratch that - still getting 503
trying to isolate to one server

still seeing any problems?

Not yet

8:29 AM
dammit - our error-logger seems to have detached :(

Annoying

123 testing...

I've re-deployed, and that seems to have improved things
I have fiddler up, so I'll probably see it, but please give me a shout (i.e. @marcgravell me) if you get anything further
All I did to "fix" it was add something new to investigate, and re-deploy. The latter seems to have done it.
maybe just a bad build

8:53 AM
morning

Heya.

hello

9:27 AM
Why, hello.

morning
hmm, me thinks I'm in need of cash for bacon

[Groan], don't talk to me about bacon at this time of day. Do you realise how many miles I am from any decent bacon here? :)

9:47 AM
far enough for me to be able to tease you about it :P

oh well, lunch in a few minutes. but it won't be bacon butties

10:00 AM
:P
Hmm, I rediscovered Boo last night, for some reason it's made me more excited about it than when I remember last looking at it. And despite the existence of Specter I think I might try creating an RSpec-esque BDD framework with it, to try and learn it :)

Does the Boo splash interesting live up to the program's name?

(Unrelated: The tilt of the code sample on that Specter home page screws with my eyes)

@Benjol likewise, I think they term screen shot too literally :P
@badp I don't quite get what it is your asking...

My asking is about Boo's splash screen :)

@badp it has a splash screen?

10:12 AM
It doesn't? :(

nope, it is just a programming language :)
Not entirely sure why the SharpDevelop logo has a gold fish in it.

11:02 AM
Boo's syntatic macro stuff is really quite cool. Why don't we have this sort of stuff in c#.

11:19 AM
ask eric :)

12:12 PM
Is programmer day already mentioned here?

hah -- no, didn't know about it
256th day of the year, hmm?

remember -- you can edit chat messages :)

ah, forgot :P

12:32 PM
A quick morning rant about women...
Only a woman could:
1. Attack you out of the blue for something completely irrelevant
2. Claim to be joking when you get upset
3. Attack and mock you for 'being too sensitive'
4. ...
5. Profit!

in Gaming, 2 mins ago, by Ivo Flipse

@badp nice one

The ansker's rating really ruins it though.

12:52 PM
question, is there a css setting which makes the browser show newlines as if they were br's (like a pre but without being a pre?)
don't ask why

@Benjol .element { white-space: pre; }

thanks

yw

1:08 PM
Hello :)

welcome James

Good morning

1:42 PM
Morning everyone

hey. You gonna be Unhandled forever then? :)

Hey Josh

How goes @Fosco?

@TheUnhandledException I'm all over the spectrum today..

@Fosco I saw your mini-rant, tough weekend? :-/

1:46 PM
@TheUnhandledException just a tough sunday evening I guess.. the rest was fine.
@TheUnhandledException how about you?

Well I hope it all works out!
I'm doing pretty well thanks. Have a very, very busy week
Will keep an ear out for anyone @ing me, but need to hunker down and write some actual code this week ;-)

ok have a productive day sir

Thank you! :-)

2:23 PM
@Fosco I've forgotten, do you know JavaScript / Flash by any chance?
I have this nasty bug which has been driving me insane >:o

@TheUnhandledException JS yes.. It has been a few years since I've worked with Flash, though.
I used to be pretty big into Director/Lingo 10 years ago... Flash/Actionscript about 6 years ago.

Cool. Ever worked with Flash's ExternalInterface, perchance?

hmm.. I'd have to go with no..

2:57 PM
Quiet in here today

Shhh

@JoePhillips hehe

3:22 PM
Anyone seen this unicorn ad:
Nevermind, forgot chat won't let pictures get pasted.

just links

anyone program against the sharepoint api? If I have a asp.net site that wants to access some sharepoint lists, do I have to develop that site on the sharepoint server?

3:59 PM
hello

Dangit people are still deleting dupes, guaranteeing they'll be asked again later, since the wording is different.

4:19 PM
@JoePhillips SP Lists can be accessed via RSS or as WebServices
As long as the WebServices services are enabled and running on the farm. They are published automatically

Hey there @Diago!
You missed Friday's insanity :-)
Anyway I'm headed to lunch, bbs.

@TheUnhandledException Guess what I got?
@TheUnhandledException I missed it on purpose

4:37 PM
Quick question, is assertion supposed to be used outside of unit testing ?

@HoLyVieRUNIONDOEVILSQL If I asserted you that this wasn't the case, the statement would invalidate itself.

lol
I'm just more confused >.<

HELLO PEOPLE
WHAT ARE YOU ALL DOING?

@Chacha102 HELLO, IS IT CAPSLOCK DAY ?

NO. IT IS NOT CAPSLOCK DAY
IT IS NOT OPPOSITE DAY EITHER

4:42 PM
Attention Chacha102: It appears your shift key may be stuck. Please remedy this immediately
4
Q: Block or warn about entries which are mostly uppercase.

BobbyI'm suggesting to block or to display a warning if an answer or question is mostly consisting of uppercase characters. Something along the lines of "It seems like your Shift-Key is stuck, you might wanna correct your post".

Q: Need "Too Broad" reason to close

Lance RobertsI often feel a question needs to be closed because it's too broad to be answered, and it would need many more details to winnow it down to being possible to answer. Like here, I voted to close this, but chose "Not a real question" which isn't really the best reason, none of the choices fit. How...

Something we really need.

It seems like NaRQ fits that well enough

@MichaelMrozek The problem is that it is a real question, it's just way too broad to answer. I think it would help the OPs if they saw a close reason like that, so that they would learn to make better questions.

@Diago Can I modify these lists or are they read-only?

4:58 PM
@JoePhillips RSS will be readonly - The WebServices depends on user security.
From what I remember. 2010 is both ways as long as you have rights

@Diago That sounds like it might work. None of this requires MOSS does it? We are only using WSS
Oh, but we're only on 2007.. hrmmm

@JoePhillips I have only ever done it with MOSS 2007. 2010 is just easier.

hmm ok

Q: StackFlair - Generate flair for your StackExchange associated accounts

rchernScreenshots About There have been several requests on MSO for a way to get a combined flair similar to what is shown on Area51. I took a "I want it, I'll make it" approach. Thus became StackFlair. StackFlair generates a combined flair representing all of your associated StackExchange acc...

@rchern very nice work!!

5:14 PM
(:
feedback is very welcome

thats cool
how does it link the sites?

Is area51 missing from the flair ?

In the screenshot where it shows your rep as 7442, it could use a comma to separate thousands

@HoLyVieRUNIONDOEVILSQL, read the fine print :p
> Area51 is currently excluded as the site is not included in the api.

5:18 PM
very cool @rchern.. I like it a lot

@rchern You should have an image version so it can be embedded in posts. I hacked up an image-thing for my own purposes, but it's terrible and specific to my account; a generic one would be neat
...I would paste it here, but the chat appears to destroy my message immediately

@rchern The link on the name doesn't exactly do anything useful :p

maybe it should link to the profile on the top site

yeah, relative url issue...working on that.

5:23 PM
@Fosco it would have to be the URL that the users ID came from

@Chacha102 Hey did you get a chance to read my email?
If anyone is interested in possibly joining an open source project (most likely PHP based), let me know your email and I'll send you the pitch.

@Fosco What kind of project ?

relative url resolved. ^_^

@HoLyVieRUNIONDOEVILSQL I'm being very secretive about it to protect it.. I can send you the information via email.

That tends to not be a great sign, particularly for an open-source project

5:35 PM
@MichaelMrozek, yeah, I mention that in the post. I'd like to offer that, I've just never worked with generating images like this. I haven't found the magical String.ConvertHtmlToImage function yet. :P

@rchern My version uses khtml2png2 to essentially screenshot the HTML version. Not a very scalable solution :)

@rchern Very nice. Is your ignoring of area51 status-bydesign?

@MichaelMrozek I hadn't thought about it like that... was focused on the fact that it hasn't started yet, so it really isn't open yet.

@rchern That's weird but thanks.

5:39 PM
gives @badp [status-didn't-read-post] :P

status-I-just-came-back-home

@Fosco I did a project that was chat based in PHP, you can take a look at it. phpcs.com/codes/PHP-CHAT-AVEC-PHP5-PAF_49951.aspx

6:14 PM
There MUST be something I can remove there. I just don't know what...

@Marc, do you guys have stats on how the traffic has dropped on MetaSO now that the other Metas are active?

Not personally, no.

It seems like a lot. Now it's like the Meta graveyard.

@HoLyVieRUNIONDOEVILSQL cool.. this would be more like an IDE with a chat interface.

@badp I replaced the Gnome Menu with the small version (just an icon), trimmed date and seconds from the clock, and as removed the Empathy integration menu (you don't seem to be using that, either) and the Shutdown menu (I don't shutdown the system that often, and then it's in the Gnome menu->System->Shut down)

6:21 PM
I guess I will have to build some mockups

shameless advertising, flagging as spam:

A: How to get a combined flair like the one on area51.stackexchange.com?

rchernI created StackFlair for this very purpose.

we're after you, @rchern!

I know of the alternatives, @Piskvor, I just don't like them :D

>_>

@badp Ah, okay. Nevermind then :)

I did think about making it CW, I'd be fine with that.

6:24 PM
don't you dare
you deserve your points :)

(:

I never made the unicornify post CW
it was eventually auto-CWed (many answers), but until then, I got some rep out of it ;)

hahaha
very nice

6:55 PM
@Piskvor email sent, ty.

@Fosco Thanks; am slightly busy right now, will respond within a few hours, ok?

sure, no rush..

haha, i got the necromancer badge for that answer @balpha

all right. Good night/afternoon/morning/whatever to all.

@rchern Now, that's too much. A little bit of rep alright, but now you're getting badges for your scam? Outrageous!

7:03 PM
:D

also, feature request: please make the flair glow-in-the-dark
and it needs /me support

LOL

and keyboard shortcuts

-1 not enough bevel

Oh, and when I pull my wifi cable out of my esata port halfway through generating the flair and at the same time dance the Ententanz, I get a weird error message from Farmville. Please fix that.

7:06 PM
btw @balpha, have you fixed the bug about speed of light being off by one yet? I think it has to do with people starring Welbog.

/me just went and walked around the hall as she was dangerously close to bursting out laughing at her desk :P

moar flair!

it's like awesome!

glitter-graphics.com fails me.

Nice work @rchern!
@badp and @badp :-)

7:14 PM
@rchern not sure if you saw my feature-request to have the number formatted.. 7,602.. or [status-denied] it?

the screenshot doesn't do the glitter justice: jsfiddle.net/fZQka

@Fosco What if the request comes from Italy or France? Then it should be formatted as "7.602!"

heh

@badp I only care about people who do things the same way I do...

Switching the star to the live version

7:16 PM
just kidding, of course.

@Fosco Same here! =}

status-thought-i-added-the-string-format-on-that-already
@Fosco, ^^. so i guess [bug] and [status-planned]

@rchern cool, thanks.

This chat cracks me up xD
highlight of my day by far... not like the meeting I'm about to attend
status-boooooring

what do the cool cats use for open source control/issue-tracking + vs integration that isn't tfs these days? |:

7:23 PM
svn+trac
IDK if I'm cool or not, but I love the combo
Example: The XMPP Trac/SVN repo (mostly empty)

I was picturing something hosted. stackflair.somee.com is already a random free host that probably won't work in the long run. |:

How many repos do you need @rchern?
Also I have no idea about VS+trac

how many repos do i need?

@rchern And, is this specifically for Stack apps?
@rchern Yeah, like, is this one issue tracker for StackFlair, or 100 issue trackers for all the work you're doing for your business?
In other words, if Trac would work for you I could possibly host a Trac instance or two. But if you need dedicated hosting for your business, I couldn't really host you as my company doesn't have SLAs for Trac hosting
But I'm happy to host a Trac repo for anything Stack-y, like XMPP integration or StackFlair
(If that's helpful to you)

oooh. StackFlair-specific. I'm thinking either CodePlex or GitHub could work.

7:32 PM
@GregHewgill uses GitHub for the IRC integration, I think?
I haven't taught myself Git, much to @balpha 's dismay :-)
@rchern check out:

Q: Git and Trac (or similar)

Paul OsborneIn the past I have really enjoyed using Trac with subversion repositories hosted on some of my own servers. The integrated ticketing and online code browsing is very convenient. I have used github for some of my public projects but I don't have the money to shell out for an extra service, espci...

yeah, me either

@rchern What do you use? svn, cvs, other?

I use Git for pretty much everything these days, even my web site content

@TheUnhandledException, TFS at work and it's been quite some time since I've done personal projects worth worrying about version control sadly ):

@rchern I know the feeling, except like @GregHewgill I use version control for everything, even non-development stuff :-)

7:37 PM
even at work where we have a subversion repository, I still use git-svn

If you'd like me to give you a Trac environment to play with just let me know @rchern -- I'd be happy to. I live Trac personally but it's hardly the only solution out there :-)

@TheUnhandledException yeah, I wouldn't say that's a bad thing.
My project for tonight while I watch football is figuring out this piece of the project. (:

Good plan :-)
If I can be of assistance you can normally find me in here or the Roach Motel or the XMPP room

(:

7:52 PM
Headed to a meeting, bbl...

so my company doesn't have anymore visual studio licenses to set up in a VM for sharepoint development... not sure what we're going to do
any suggestions?

buy more licenses? don't use sharepoint?

both of those sound like fantastic ideas
we always have to go the cheap route though. hoorah

8:23 PM
@JoePhillips do you have an MSDN subscription?

/me has a Technet subscription, and loves it.

yes, but technet only includes trial licenses, no?
"sharepoint development" sound like an MSDN job...

right, Sharepoint wouldn't be included in technet.. sorry, i wasn't trying to be on-topic. Technet is non-commercial evaluation licenses, but they don't expire.

/me has both... for at least the next two weeks. Let's see if I get my MVP renewed on Oct 1st...

good luck!
I bought it on special, was ~$220 for a year.. was hoping to find VS2010 in there, silly me..
I had a lot of fun with it though, setting up a massive 2008 server with hyperV and 7 virtual machines

8:27 PM
thinking maybe I should download my license key numbers, just in case they can me?

@MarcGravell absolutely!!
I have a book full, really took advantage..

"request serial number" (click) "request serial number" (click) [etc]
The funny thing is I gave away 3 full MSDN universal licenses a few months back (courtesy MS); I should have thought to keep one ;p
(just in case)
or maybe that is missing the point of the giveaway ;p

haha
that's $12,000!!
I got to run.. have a good night

is that kind of like vacation vs staycation?

@who?

8:33 PM
you! (re: giveaway vs ...keep-something)
My brain isn't fully functional. I was up until about 4:30am working on StackFlair lol.

well, it did explicitly state on the cover letter from dev-division that anyone could be the recipient ;p Still, I gave them all away, so moot.
the blue glitter ;p

If I do themes, I'm gonna have to do a glitter theme, aren't I?

@rchern All you have to do is joke about it being related to unicorns or maple syrup somehow, and it'll be the most popular thing since... well, since chat.

:p
i need tiny unicorn images rather than the diamond and circles!

8:54 PM
@PopularDemand I'm working on a unicorn chat bot which serves waffles when you type /waffle username
So StackFlair may be #2 in popularity ;-)

hehe

9:09 PM
Oh Safari, why doest thou leak so whilst I chat?
/me switches to FireFox
Ahhh, much better. Plus now chat is in my NX session so I can leave it running and reconnect to it on demand :-)

1 hour later…
