Q: iPhone sending a lot of packets addressed to weird destinations, draining battery quickly.

Louie TanI have a jailbroken iPhone. Recently, I have realized that its battery usage is abysmal. Suspecting that it has something to do with the radio, I downloaded Data Counter from Cydia to check real-time data usage and found that even with push notifications off and exchange set to manual, there is a...

Not likely that anyone here can help, but...

5:15 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Hey, that's my line! ;)

LOL
go away notification, go awayyyyyyyyy

I know, he really does need to change that...

@RebeccaChernoff (with a puff of green smoke the notification turned into a frog)

No, it duplicated >_<

@RebeccaChernoff duplicated and again on edits and it gets maddening (I'll stop now)

5:19 PM
):

we should all do that to @MarcGravell when he logs in ...
I hadn't noticed tho, does yours do repeated shows on edits too, or just his?

@drachenstern, you mean like this?

yes, that's what I mean. Is there a way to remove the old one when you show a new one?
ty for that ;)

eh, my thinking was they only show for 10 seconds, so not that big of a deal.

my thinking is if you use localstorage for config settings and let the user change how long to show that info for ... I can see I now know what I want to teach myself for Q1 2011

5:24 PM
o:

@drachenstern Don't bother - here, let me teach you localStorage in two minutes :P

lol, more than that sir, but I'll take the lessons I get ;)

Meh, it's as simple as localStorage['key'] = value

I was going to mess around with the notification stuff, but since Marc has integrated it into the main chat I don't see much point outside of harassing him repeatedly to fix it. ;)

You can clear the storage space with localStorage.clear(). Usually you'll want to couple it with the JSON functions to let it store complex objects instead of flat strings
Supported on IE8+ and all other modern browsers. And that's... it.

5:26 PM
Can I "download" a CSV from data in the localstorage via javascript? I'm thinking data manip at the office
what if I localStorage = 1; What will that do?

@drachenstern You can't set the value of localStorage I think - you'll get an error
TypeError: setting a property that has only a getter

But otherwise it's a free and clear associative array yeah? I can use it as often as I like for whatever I want to store?
Interesting

@drachenstern Yup.

How does it work cross-domain?
/afk

Hi drach's boss. q:

5:31 PM
Hahah

@drachenstern It doesn't. The way SE does it with StackAuth is to embed an iframe with an common domain in each of the SE sites

Hmm, I think it's lunch time....which means a trip to Walmart and probably a stop-in at the McDonald's, since I've gone long enough without eating that that doing so won't kill me.

Hehe, and hello desktop notification that doesn't go away. (;

Hah!

@RebeccaChernoff The Rise of the Undead Notifications! In cinemas now

5:32 PM
Marc is causing all sorts of trouble with that, isn't he? :P

Poking @MarcGravell...

We already suggested changes, now he's going to miss them because you all keep @-notifying him unnecessarily ;)

@YiJiang, do you by any chance repeatedly press the elevator button thinking that that'll make it come faster?

Q: Proposal to clean up the scope of the site: Is your question about using a specific web application?

rchernThe line between on-topic and off-topic questions has always been on the soft side here. As time goes on, we seem to get further and further away from a concrete line or simple definition of what is on-topic. As a result, I feel like the quality of questions might be slipping. I think that by ...

@RebeccaChernoff In actual fact, yes I do!

5:34 PM
Apparently your proposal was so good he felt the need to share it in the Gaming chat ;)
@RebeccaChernoff You have to let it know you mean business. It's the only way.

I mean, given how slow they already are, can't you believe how slow they will be without me pressing the button like a madman

@TimStone Haha, he pasted it in the mod room, probably did it in gaming by accident first

Yeah, he said so right after, heheh

Q: Has StackOverflow got lazyweb?

Delirium tremensI remember seeing a list of easy to pick licenses in the Mozilla Addons website when I developed an addon. Can Stack Overflow create and popularize commercial licenses? You will think this is weird coming from a Mozilla Addon developer, but I value open source and commercial, because they're my ...

Can anyone understand what's he's trying to say? I certainly can't

@RebeccaChernoff Apparently I haven't read your message, despite my replying to it, so this desktop notification has faithfully stuck around to make sure I do.

5:38 PM
o:

@TimStone Like I said, the rise of the undead notifications!

@YiJiang I have absolutely no idea, especially when I take the title into consideration.

Although I think for Chrome it's fade in

5:52 PM
@RebeccaChernoff no, needed to step down the hall to the little programmers room, then went to the breakroom after coffee, then got caught up on the phone

lmao @ the little programmers room

@TimStone nah when he shows up we'll remind him, he'll just go "why the hell are ya'll poking me needlessly

It's where the junior developers work
:P
He'll probably just dismiss it with "Those damn MSO chatters, always making noise on my lawn!"

I do prefer the slightly more polite forms... I could be crass

wanders off to Walmart

5:58 PM
@TimStone, I could use some more milk. Thanks.

You want anything from McDonald's while I'm there too? :p

I do like the McRibs
but no slivered onions

Also, that teleportation feature better be added to the userscript by the time I get back.

Back in a bit ;)

5:59 PM
be safe
wow, less than 800 messages from spolsky on chat ...

Where do you see that? I see 5997.

5997 - 5199 = < 800
or can I not add?

Why are we subtracting 5199?

Granted now it's 5997 - 5204 so ...
for my difference to him

ooooooooh

6:04 PM
I've decided to become obsessed with how much I chat, for no particular benefit

"less than 800 messages from spolsky on chat" != "spolsky has said less than 800 messages on chat"
got it
I have no idea other than "too much" heh.

lol, that's how I feel :S
drach's boss has decided to spend an hour going over fogbugz tickets ... I keep seeing things jump around from closed to reassigned to opened ...

6:31 PM
damnit I hate finding new bugs in old code :|
/afk - lunch

6:47 PM
i am really sick and tired of all these low quality one off posts stackoverflow.com/questions/4556878/…
i need more votes to close such questions
or like these

Q: How to load a uitableviewcell from a single xib

The GiGIs it possible to load a xib into a single uitableviewcell without making any unnecessary? classes?

can we do something about them?

returns with food, disappointingly sans sweet and sour sauce, but also with sweet and sour sauce because he had extra packets at home

hi tim

'Ello

so tim what do you do?

That's actually a closely guarded secret around here. But, in general I'm the CTO of a technology company, and I write a lot of Java code. I also spend a lot of time in this chat and help to work on these userscripts.

7:00 PM
wow, rare to see someone of CTO still writing Java :D
i see.

Well, to be fair, we're not a very big company, so I'm just as much a developer as I am a management person. :)

@drachenstern that's why you need to keep testing
seems like everything is bold here
wut we actually have a twitter.com/stackappbot StackApp bot on twitter?

7:51 PM
@TimStone that's because you don't want us to know where you live and work, but we know ... oh yes, we know mwahahaha cough sputter hack

You know where I work? :P

either that or you're secretly drach's boss and just toy with him hehehe

Hmm, that would be hilarious...

@TimStone I ... err ... what I meant to say was ...
@thephpdeveloper nonsense, it's why I need to be the only one to write code around here ... they don't find too many bugs in my code, except for business logic ones.
I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but predominantly when I'm the only dev on an .aspx, it doesn't happen as often statistically speaking
when others come along between my changes, it increases the bug count from my code additions, cos I expect their code to do certain things, like not make unexpected async calls that aren't documented, etc
@TimStone yes, yes it would. However, he's been mucking about in FogBugz all morning, and you do java :p

I say I do Java, but you never know... ;)

7:54 PM
have you seen this room?
@TimStone well hell I mean I can read/write Java but I'm not as good with it as I am with C#

Hahah

so let me tell you what my letters have been so far in this game:
AAIIOET last turn, and OIAADO? this turn
and then you go and play "re" in front of "pay" ...

:P

I DO TEA TO AI IO something something :P

Yeah, you should probably play off of that T before I take the double word score ;)

7:57 PM
WITH WHAT?

TAD :D

I got like 17 vowels, know a word with 17 vowels do you?
TAD? TAD ends with D, not T

Or TOAD, guess you could kill off two vowels

oh you mean go DOWN from the T

Oh, yeah.

7:58 PM
I kinda wanted to block your R

I don't think you can play up from the T

'twould be a sweet surprise wouldn't it?

OPIATE doesn't really have a single letter prefix that I'm aware of :P
Eh, I'm not going to play off of the R.
Though I did kick myself after the fact, having played that..
