@TimStone Change migration so that you need 1,000 rep in a site to be able to migrate with.
Now you'll be familiar with all the choices you have!
↑ bad idea of the now.

@Wes you think "Why do questions on Stack Overflow get stolen and posted on other SE sites?" belongs on Stack Overflow?

Negotiate more efficiently Quicktime!

@balpha Because they are stolen programmatically by shady people on boats.

@balpha FYI, I added "SE" to that.

Later.

7:01 PM
@TimStone you have five more minutes +/-

The original version just said "other sites," and I assumed it was about scrapers/clones.

@radp Who wants to spend time to get over 1,000 rep on SU? :P
See ya
@drachenstern That would explain the lack of loading.

@PopularDemand either way, it belongs on meta, not SO

it's on

The migration options should have a write-in just like write-in candidates for elections.
Shortcut to creating new SE sites!

7:05 PM
Hrm, it's not loading for me.

@balpha Oh, I'm not arguing about that. You're absolutely right. I just wanted to point out that it used to be even worse.

@TimStone me neither. too many viewers probably

@balpha @TimStone So if you've heard the Mono Lake stuff, that's it. The arsenic lifeform.

Wes
@balpha Not really but its too ironic to move a question thats complaining about movement for gods sake
it wouldn't have got upvoted.

scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=arsenic-life and there's the microbe they discussed initially on the webcast

7:09 PM
@rchern More like Google AutoComplete. Typing in S would give you the option to migrate to Stack Overflow, Super User, Server Fault, Seasoned Advice or Stats SE.

there's a panel of like 5 scientists to discuss this, but the main researcher (Felisa Wolfe-Simon) is the one doing all the talking right now ...

Wes
Anyway what do I know I bring little value to the sites

@PopularDemand Since when is auto completion Google branded? Also, this is boring compared to my write-in suggestion. (:
We could combine it though.
Just start typing a site. If there's a match, it'll go there. Otherwise, new site!

@rchern The Internet is Google branded.

|:

7:11 PM
also, I think that mono lake creature is actually Steve Yegge

Hahah

Trying to go through everything and write things down so that someone else can be me is hard. ):

@rchern What's hard about writing "Use jQuery (:"?

@rchern What's so hard about "Oy?" ;)

7:17 PM
high-fives @GeorgeMarian

Boo-yah!

@rchern I took the option of "here's my cell, call me anytime for the first six months" ... after I wrote down all the things I knew of right away and kept notes for two weeks and after I copied all my non-personal emails to a public folder (yay for separation of emails during my outlook lifetime ;) )

@TimStone, @GeorgeMarian, hrmph.

@rchern It's extra-convenient to do that if you swap two of the digits of the phone number.

I'm actually learning something new about biochem by listening to this ... shame I'm not a professional biochemist

7:24 PM
@rchern Naw, I'm sure that it's not an easy task. I have a hard enough time explaining myself as it is, let alone to the extent that someone could take my place.

Yup.

Make sure you give them the URL to chat.MSO so they can show up here asking questions

lmao
"This isn't about arsenic, and it isn't about Mono Lake, it's about thinking differently"

@MichaelMrozek (;

@rchern Don't listen to him, code related questions belong on chat.SO or SO proper. :P

7:29 PM
q:

Hiya all

hola @Moshe

hi
What's all the excitement about this micro-organism?
Arsenic?

@TimStone I think SU wouldn't have been created with Area51

@radp - Speaking of A51, this should be closed immediately:
1
Wikileaks

Proposed Q&A site for previous whistleblowers, and those with questions. Also, welcoming those who need advice or have questions about whistleblowing.

Currently in definition.

It's like posting a question on SU: How can I pirate program X.
It's going to make SE look shady.
@TimStone ditto that

7:40 PM
Whoops, he's not here, heh.

@Moshe I love his Area51 reputation graph.

'Ello by the way, @Moshe

@TimStone - hi
@radp - where can i see that?
ah
heh
found it
How does that even work?

I don't think it does right there

His rep is at 148, but the graph shows -16.0

7:42 PM
Yes, I'm the Evan Carroll you've heard of: programmer, boy-genius, open source guru, reigning god of technology and source code.
@Moshe associations?

@drachenstern - Because of a court order (injunction), I was taken off line for a little over two years (2006-2009). I defended myself (pro se), and won...

@drachenstern nope

@drachenstern - ?
The general bad attitude or is this a famous personality I'm unaware of?

Kingwood College is like an upper-class 2 year school ... but then again Kingwood is the $$$ residence part of the north side of town, so there you have it

Ah, spoiled rich kid.

7:45 PM
Anybody in Kingwood whining about their realty license is ... probably not going to be a superb programmer
altho he does have 6k stackoverflow.com/users/124486

He seems to know PERL
Look, I've got 2.48K on SO.
I don't spend a lot of time answering questions because I'm a bit busy
He's got some good answers there apparently.
Looks like the man knows perl, yep.
What's his overall SE rep?
Eh, about 6 or 7K, same as me.
G'luck, back to work on this here website I've been procrastinating.
@drachenstern - It's funny what you can pick up about people online

he's not wearing a yarmulke so I assume it's her (also the facial structure, but that's either racist or profiling, so I won't say anything about her facial structure)

@drachenstern - I dunno. Where'd you pick up the yarmulka bit, or does everyone know about that?

Jewish men traditionally wear them during religious ceremonies

@drachenstern - Actually, religious jewish men wear them always, but it varies by your background.

7:56 PM
Ugh, this is worse than code block, oy.

I am wearing one now. :-)
@rchern - what?

@rchern You have rchern block?
3

I thought you were Jewish but I wasn't sure, and I didn't know it was all the time

@TimStone haha

@drachenstern - I am.
@LanceRoberts - No. Please read carefully. If you care, I'm wearing my Monday shirt, the shirt in my avatar.

7:57 PM
@Moshe Yep, saw my mistake.
It was funny for a moment.

Except I am also wearing my head today.
Hopefully that's not only Mondays.
@drachenstern - Moshe is a jewish name.

Isn't today Thursday?
is confused yet again

@TimStone - Yes it is.

@moshe my name is a made up name on here ;)
and I don't use my real name all that often, but I'm sure a few in here have learned it

I am still wearing my Monday shirt.
@drachenstern - Ah well, I guess its off to the transcripts then.

7:59 PM
lol
or google ;)

Seriously though, if you've got nothing to hide and you're not offending anyone, why hide your identity?

@Moshe Hehe, I've thought about changing my display name to my real name.

I wouldn't post my adress or phone number, but name is just a name
As Evan Carrol points out on his website, there are many Evan Carrols out there.
@drachenstern - You have the same name on Twitter?

@rchern Because you've obfuscated it so well now :)

@Moshe in most places where english is the original or primary tongue, except I can't seem to wrestle the domain name for myself, and I'm sure there's a few that got away from me

8:01 PM
@MichaelMrozek ponders what the meaning of this statement is

@rchern - Your twitter account says it all

oh, and except the places where artificial limits prevent me from having it, such as my first AIM screen name was drachenste but I gave that client up a long time ago

Ah,

@MichaelMrozek To be fair, it seems to be as effective as any other obfuscation technique I've seen. :P

May I "whistle-Blow" on some names?

8:02 PM
@Moshe because I've been using this name since 1996 online

Ah, so for you, it's like a handle.

It is indeed my handle

@drachenstern , @rchern - Twitter told me your names.
And your SO prifiles tell me your locations.

and I want that stinking domain name!!!

I'm sure flick can tell me what you like

8:02 PM
@Moshe I chose to put it on twitter tyvm ;)

and then I am you.

@Moshe google does that

:)

@Moshe again something I didn't have to do

Well, except @rchern - then it's (:
@drachenstern - true
That'd be pretty funny actually.
Someone steals @rcherns ID and blows their cover by smiling correctly.

8:04 PM
Heh.

@rchern, Congratulations - you have a good identity theft protection.

@Moshe what information does this give away? google.com/profiles/drachenstern
hmmm, do my buzz posts show publicly?

@drachenstern Yeah, hahahah

saweeet

8:05 PM
@drachenstern - Well, it's a start.

I made a group on facebook and put a bunch of my friends on there from uni, and then buzz'd the ones that would be upset with that message
:D
@Moshe I believe it has my list of past towns on there no?

I'm in an unknown location, dum dum da dum. Originally it was just because I was too lazy to fill out my profile, but now it's more fun to keep the guessing game alive.

Oh, Fayyetvile
oops
my bad
heh
I read it wrong.
@drachenstern - I prefer being my own handle.
Bye all. ttyl gotta get to work.

@TimStone Hmm. I feel like you've said, haven't you? Somewhere east / northeast?

@rchern I think he has, and in the past three days no less...

8:09 PM
@rchern That's what you said the last time :P
@drachenstern No, but I did mention somewhere I used to live, and where I didn't live.

@TimStone Oh, heh. |:

You mentioned canada for six years

Oh, that's right. You were in Baltimore for a conference.

Yeah, I used to live in Kingston, Ontario. That was pretty nice.
Ah, yeah, heh. :P

Nov 24 at 17:30, by Tim Stone
@TheUnhandledException I live somewhere between you and Canada. (Have to keep rchern guessing) ;)

8:11 PM
That conference is actually in Baltimore for the next two years...the hotel we stayed at was pretty nice, so I'm happy about that.

I don't think I saw this message. Oy.

I felt it unnecessary to @-ping you, hahah.

@TimStone would you say that programming is very similar to writing poetry?
yes quoted on purpose :p

Though I'm not sure that I know (or remember) where @TheUnhandledException is, so that doesn't narrow things down much. (;

@drachenstern Yeah, that's not me. ;)

8:15 PM
(I also didn't realize I was supposed to be guessing.)

@rchern NC, heh

But it reads so closely ... it just doesn't track with what I know so far

You aren't, but you were at the time you told me it was no fun that I didn't have that information in my profile.

Confused by this reputation graph and the user account: meta.stackoverflow.com/users/5640?tab=reputation

also, notice the name
sound familiar to any bloggers or SOIS founders? PS I think you're doing it wrong:

Bye all. ttyl gotta get to work.

8:17 PM
Jeff Atwood, of course
@drachenstern - I was. I came back to look up an answer I needed.

Q: Bug: Hitting enter key when using spell correcting or other dialog in a comment box causes it to commit

Nick TIn Firefox (3.6 and 4 b7) when typing a comment and I spelled something wrong, I'll use the keyboard to go back, hit the menu key, go to what I meant and hit enter. Haha

Shh, I fixed it ;)

What would be the right SO site to ask this question? Jeff?
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090909130700AAeK1B6

8:19 PM
I thought it was an impressive dupe at first ;)
I would suggest Meta.SO on Friday Afternoon

@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback Can we just make him disappear so no one would ask that question anywhere? :P

@Tim maybe it is time for an Assassination Q&A site?

Heheh, perhaps, perhaps. ;)

By the way, I think Jeff's day job got busted by the police:

8:25 PM
Does Jeff have an obsession with not liking Justin Bieber or something?

@drachenstern Hahah, nice.

@rchern naah. He loves Justin.

@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback MSO.

@Wes when you return:
2 hours ago, by Wes
@TheUnhandledException I've just realised by asking the question here and me answering here. You've stolen some rep I may or may not have got. Not that I would have seen the question anyway.
I have a crazy afternoon but I will post the question later. When I do, I'll @Wes you so you have a fair chance to answer and say it can't be done. Unless anyone says otherwise, I'll accept your answer.

@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback I am suspicious.

8:33 PM
and @Tim I wasn't here for this and don't have time to read the transcript to find out what it means but:
1 hour ago, by Tim Stone
@PopularDemand Exactly. That's why I don't want any stars or up votes.
Have a star :-)

Heheh, thanks ;)

OK. Back to work for me. Don't tell my boss I was in here! :-)

picks up the phone.

You know his boss' number, but not what state he lives in? ;)

@rchern no need. He loves him, even though he tries to pin it on Welbog in public.

8:39 PM
@TimStone Shhh. Your logic has no place here.

I wish I was at my old job...could drink a beer in the afternoon.

@TheUnhandledException - Hi, working on that PHP web project again.

@NickT nice job hehe

Weird jQuery problem. Anyone haz teh helpz?
I'm including jQuery and then using it in a set of script tags in my header.
and then it's not responding.
If I move the jQuery script code block (with the script tags) to the end of my page, it works.
Why?
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
	<head>
		<title>
			Bitachon.org
		</title>
		<style type="text/css">
			@import "reset.css";
			@import "stickyfooter.css";
			@import "style.css";
		</style>
		<!--[if !IE 7]>
	    <style type="text/css">
		    #wrap {display:table;height:100%}
	    </style>
   <![endif]-->
   <script src="jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script>
   <script type="text/javascript">
	$(document).ready(function() {

    // progressive enhancement: adjust the footer to the height
    // of the 'collapsed-view'

I totally read the title wrong. |:

8:44 PM
@rchern Hah! :p

@Moshe I heard of this stackoverflow place...

@radp - yep.
Heading over there

@rchern Oh wow, you mean the <title>? I know I just did, heh.
@Moshe What do you mean by that?

@TimStone - What did I mean by what?

@TimStone Yeah, haha.

8:48 PM
I think I halfway solved the problem. I'm an idiot.

That it's not responding

I click on the footer expansion button and it doesn't run the javascript.

slaps a PEBKAC sticker on @Moshe's back.

PEBKAC?

Problem Easily Bisected into a Kitchen and an Apple Center.
2

8:49 PM
Ok, I'm an idiot. It's all good.
Apple Center?
Like a Genius bar?
Aww, I was so tempted to post another question entitled " Why is jQuery broken?"

@radp mmm, no.

@rchern - what then?
Pee Eee Bee Kay Aye See?
(removed)

Wes
@TheUnhandledException Naw I wasn't serious. Honestly. I can't type a tone of voice though.

Ugh

Wes
I would be interested in seeing the answers.

8:52 PM
@drachenstern - I knew that.

ok then, just making sure

Are there PEBKAC stickers?
@drachenstern - But I honestly forgot. So, I knew that, but not now, when I saw it.

Wes
@Moshe Is jQuery all that or is it just a meme here?

@Wes - Meme, but I'm using it now.

8:53 PM
@Wes apparently you've never used jQuery
Or you would know that it cures cancer, that it can fix your broken garbage disposal, and that it definitely knows how to convert bits to bytes
The one thing it can't yet do, is fix PEBKAC errors

Wes
Nope I've never used it. nor Script a lico.us whatever

@Wes - I'm not the person to ask about it, I'm not all that familiar with it.
But it definitely does a lot of cool stuff.

scriptaculous
prototype

You know ,I was wondering.

there's a lot of frameworks for JS, depends on what you want to do

Wes
8:54 PM
Most I've used was YUI once for a prototype

...wait for it... (a remark about Moshe wondering)
Why is the web still using multiple independent languages to make sites?

@Moshe literally on the edge of my seat

Wes
I hate the fact that the prototype framework is called prototype. A year ago or so I couldn't get answers from google about the prototype keyword cause of that framework name.

@drachenstern - it was self deprecation, I was waiting for "Wow, you think?"
As far as my question goes:

@Moshe ??? We have a programmatic language for manipulation, a presentation language for semantic markup, and a semantic language for actual content containment ... what would you rather have?

8:56 PM
CSS and HTML and JS made sense in 1995 when bandwidth was terrible.

@Wes agreed and indeed and I've had that problem too
@Moshe they still make sense ;)

Desktop programs are all made up of a single language, often .NET, or C based language.
Yes but it's more complicated to keep track of so many resource files and whatnot.

so you want to see compiled webpages instead of source webpages, is that it?

Wes
I don't know @Moshe a lot of desktop languages leave plugin space now.

In iOS, al of my files are in one language, I'm not jumping between JS, CSS, HTML, PHP, PERL, Python, AS3 and more
@Wes, plugins aren't necessarily new languages.

8:57 PM
but to be fair the browser only understands js, css and html (ok, let's not be pedantic)

@drachenstern - maybe, or something more middle ground.

php perl python etc are server languages

Wes
@Moshe yes but often the language isn't specified only the interface.

@Moshe problem exists between keyboard and chair.

8:58 PM
@rchern - that's quite some latency you got there, @rchern

@rchern late to the party a-gain

Wes
I'd love to see the ability to gzip up a page and its image components in one file to reduce http requests.

@Wes, good point.

Hey, I'm busy over here! Trying to get someone to understand my brain is difficult! q:

@rchern - yea, maybe you should stop smiling backwards, for one.

8:59 PM
@Wes You can do that now, sorta

It'd make things a lot easier!
@DanGrossman - How so?

Wes
You talking about IE features @DanGrossman

@Moshe how would it make things easier?

@Wes You can embed image binaries in CSS, and with gzip compression on the server, you send the style sheet and images in a single zipped file
