Q: Stack Overflow compared to other developers' communities.

SilentGhostThe most recent article @ Mozilla Hacks features infographic that included information about web developers perception of online communities. While Stack Overflow is highly popular there is a few areas of concern, particularly "site organization", uniqueness of information and the accessibility o...

@Jin The favicon for TCS is still the sketchy version; funny nobody reported that on meta.tcs yet

don't mind me please
@Jin you still aboot?

kicks @drachenstern with aboot

@Jin Nooo W3Schools.com :( Yay SO!

@YiJiang ouch that smarts

@TimStone Yeah, I know! We should totally get everyone in the Javascript room to participate in the next survey and skew the results

1:32 AM
@YiJiang Mwuahah
Also, Jeff & co. aren't accessible enough? We have a freaking meta site for the site. :P
Although the term "owner leader accessible" confuses me, so maybe I misunderstood.

@TimStone I think it means exactly what you think it means

I see the love for Oracle Technology Network and I wonder ...

@drachenstern Yeah, really. I'd think these people should want to get as close to Larry Ellison as possible at every opportunity. But I may have overestimated their desire to enter the fires of hell.

@TimStone I'm just sayin ;)

Heh ;)

1:40 AM
Say, can anyone still remember what's the correct tag for the combined stackexchange.com tag search thingy?

@YiJiang [globaltag-megablender]?

@YiJiang did you load the favicon url in a separate tab and do a hard refresh?

@rchern I was reading the original question and didn't see the instructions on the launch question; yeah that worked
Firefox caches the favicons more aggressively than I thought
@TimStone Hmmm... how did I miss that in my searches ;) /blame @radp

2:09 AM
Chrome heavily crashes favicons also. Makes sense. They're not something that changes often.

Q: Allow tags that doesn't exist yet to be used in the StackExchange™ GlobalTag MegaBlender™

Yi JiangI've been trying to keep up with Jin's new design questions on the various beta StackExchange sites using the StackExchange™ GlobalTag MegaBlender™, but I've hit a snag - the MegaBlender™ doesn't allow me to add sites where there are no questions tagged design yet. This means that I have to con...

@rchern so what's up with the hour in the Apple store?

@drachenstern I replied on Twitter. (:

oh sure sure :p
so you know you can download an apple store app right? I advise you to if you think you'll ever go back (you own an Apple logo branded product right? download it ;) )

Well I know about it now ):
I thought it was like a regular store register. Walk up to the counter, maybe wait in a line of a few people, first come first serve.

3:26 AM
And now you know ;)
yeah, totally not the same experience at all huh?

Feeling good about myself. A university student e-mailed me to see if I could give him any data for a research project on web browser and OS usage. I sent him a CSV with a few million visitors' browsers/OSes from this month around the world.

I have a terrible non-problem.

how's that again?

4:27 AM
Going to the in-laws in Ottawa area for 33 days :O

Ahh, I think I see what's going on here
Well, non-problems, while they may be suck, are not the worst problems to have

A more serious problem would be work suddenly needing me to stay home because we haven't figured out how to collaborate remotely well.

/buys a SquareTrade warranty for a laptop he's giving as a gift just before the 40% Black Friday Weekend sale ends.. $59 for 3 year coverage on a $500ish laptop is cheap!
btw, woot-off going on @ woot.com right now

woot off?

Normally, woot.com sells some quantity of only a single product each day. Generally, it's the best price on the web for whatever that product is. When it's sold out, there is nothing to buy on the site until midnight of the next day when the next item goes up.
During a woot-off, as soon as the item sells out, another one goes up. Lots of good deals for 1-3 days.

4:35 AM
Ah, nice.

woot.com was acquired by Amazon earlier this year, it's been a very successful business

@MarcGravell Do we get 10k chat power in chat.stackexchange if our combined rep is > 10k?

hmmm... thinking about a change I made yesterday... probably, yes. But we could make that the largest rep easily enough.

With this change, did you make it awesome?

6:58 AM
oh, thanks to all for filling up my SE inbox yesterday.
5

I had no part in that!

@MarcGravell Actually, won't it just be something like chat message on The Tavern (General) 31 new replies?

Only if they all arrive at once. I guess I could withdraw the old ones, but...
(the inbox delivery happens in batches at some unspecified time interval)

Q: Add chat-like Youtube support to StackEchange.

radpSome stackexchange sites, like SuperUser or Gaming, would have large benefits from having some sort of Youtube integration. I'm not suggesting having embedded players in the pages. I'm rather thinking of the kind of support chat has: a static video snapshot, with an overlayed play simbol onto it...

READY... STEADY... DOWNVOTE!

Hmm.
I'm not awake enough to pass righteous judgment yet. :P

@TimStone here, have some java.

Hoorah, thanks. It has a bitter undertaste of Oracle though..nothing cream and sugar can't fix.

This has got to be the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. And it's part of the Groovy runtime: http://goo.gl/mpk1H

What the hell....?

10:35 AM
↑ this java needs more than cream, sugar or unicorn tears.

Indeed, hahah.

Don't you love polymorphism? :P

I don't even understand, Java has varargs. :P

@TimStone does it? cool, didn't know.
The madness stops at 8, not 250, still.

@TimStone no, I don't know of a reason

10:38 AM
There's a problem where you have to do what they did anyway if you have typed arguments, because Java can't create an array from a generic type (since Java generics are a bit broken)...but they aren't doing that, heh.
@radp At least 8 fits on the page. :P

   var t2 = new Tuple<string,int,int,int,
                       int,int,int,Tuple<int,int>>
                       ("Test", 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
                       new Tuple<int, int>(7, 8));
See? It's convenient.

You wouldn't do that though
it would be:
var t2 = Tuple.Create("Test", 1,2,3,4,5,6, Tuple.Create(7,8));

@MarcGravell ...Oh. Well, then I have no remorse in shamelessly suppressing that behaviour (I guess?) in fixing the Ctrl + Space retry shortcut in the userscript then. :P

not that I'm a huge fan; I've used them a few times while being lazy, but that is about it.

That's admittedly much cleaner than the Java route would be, heh.

10:42 AM
Yeah, tuples are a matter of convenience. If messing with tuples is inconvenient, you might as well write the darn class.

I do like anon-types though - handy when the declaring and consuming scope is the same.

I use tuples when I don't want to use out parameters

but there things have names. I like names.

Item1 is a name too ;)

I have no fear of the out parameter ;p

10:43 AM
yeuch. !like

@130064 you are absolutely right

I like the explanation that has been added however to that... thing.

Hah
Oh, I failed to read the comments, whoops. So that...class....was auto-generated code. That's not quite as bad, heh.

I'm very sure that isn't very mitigating

meh, if you get real improvements for free with that class -- what the hell, I'll have it.

10:53 AM
The class exists for the sake of the more efficient bytecode it creates, so I guess in reality it's indirectly a compiler optimization. :P

The Google Web Preview crawler is crazy.
It's on several thousand websites I'm tracking at this very moment

wait, you're tracking several thousand websites?

an order of magnitude more than that =p
I'm working on w3counter.com right now
just rewrote the tracking code, rejiggered the Amazon Elastic Load Balancer, getting ready to do a full-scale trial of Amazon Relational Database Service

11:39 AM
6:40AM... now I'm getting too tired to trust my work

Uptime is a bitch.

At least people are checking me when I work on that site. It's got enough users that if I break something, I'll have e-mails about it 2 minutes later.

Frightening, in a way.

I couldn't use Amazon's load balancers for that site until last month because that feature was missing

@radp You've got a bunch of typos in the YouTube video question on MSO

Q: Best place to meet female programmers (for romance) ?

ShawnIn your experience, where is the best place to pick up female programmers? I have tried craigslist (strictly platonic), but I haven't really met any women I'd consider meeting in person. Most of them didn't even know the difference between AJAX and DHTML. I have exhausted pretty much every onlin...

12:08 PM
Screw you, Googlebot. Stop hitting websites from your IP with fake user agents.

@DanGrossman They do that as an anti-abuse measure

Google Web Preview bot just told me it was Safari. Once per 140 hits.
something about this load balancer is wrong, I'm seeing some hits without an X-Forwarded-For header...

12:59 PM
@radp I've got sometime now to actually create a GM solution for that YouTube link feature request, but YouTube and Vimeo is blocked in China
Which is a crying shame really, because I've always wanted to get my hands dirty with YouTube's API

Hm, all you need to know is...
the image url is http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/<video id>/hqdefault.jpg

@radp Oh, erm... right. Well that's simpler than I thought...

@YiJiang It's probably incredibly oversimplified, but for now it should suffice :)

@radp Is it always that CDN server - I mean, I see i2.ytimg.com, is there a i3 or i1?

That's what I meant by "incredibly oversimplified"
At any rate, if you pass it an invalid ID, it should give you a stock image.

1:05 PM
@radp Which is? Oh, you mean I should go create one or something?

I'm trying to peruse the YT API documentation to give you relevant information, but the API seems focused on write-access and discoverability rather than esoteric stuff like "get me information about this video"

@radp I know, I was turned off by that stuff when I last tried to work with it

http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/blah/hqdefault.jpg is...

Vimeo's simple API is much better in this regards

1:06 PM
Also, @balpha how does the server actually generate the URL for those images? Not by parsing the URL like what @radp is suggesting here, no?

@YiJiang sure thing

@balpha Erm... you mean chat doesn't actually use YouTube's API for those tumbnails? :|

@YiJiang why make an extra API call when this solution works?

Besides, the API doesn't actually expose that URL.

1:12 PM
@balpha Oh... erm... /facepalm

The API gives you a choice of four timestamped thumbnails

?

Clearly you MUST use them to dynamically generate an animated GIF.

@YiJiang Yes, except it's not clear to understand how to choose one ;)
Sure, above it's braindead -- pick the high quality one

@balpha Well, the API was the first thing I thought about when approaching this problem
This is a much simpler solution

Oh my... I just realized how poor the sound insulation in this hotel room is - I can hear the sound coming from the TV in the room next door

Were you watching the same program?

Wes
That confuses my brain when you can hear the same tv programs in two diffferent rooms with two different sound qualities.

@PopularDemand No, my TV is off...

Just curious.

@Wes tab to autocomplete

Wes
2:44 PM
Thanks I tried up and down arrows. Never tried tab and mouse is pain.
@YiJiang thanks that worked really well

I feel cold. Good thing I can fix that.
fires up minecraft.

Wes
@radp @TimStone stop it your all costing me time with your minecraft refrences. Tim those minecraft pictures you posted wasted me hours over the weekend.

Hey @Wes, you should play some Minecraft.

@Wes So you don't want to see the Minecraft disco?

Wes
AHH no. I found redstone for the first time ever over the weekend. and one diamond. I need my time though.

2:53 PM
disco disco

@radp I feel cold. Good thing I can fix that. Jumps into bed and pulls up thick comfy blankets

@radp how many cm snow down there now?

yay, I get to totally train a customer this morning on software updates and it's my first time and I'm so unprepared ... someone pray for me, someone else slaughter a chicken... go! You have 6 minutes

You're not somewhere where you could play the 'snow stopped play' card?

2:59 PM
@Benjol - we have 2 foot
drifted against my front door :(

Not bad :) yesterday it snowed from 5 to 11 in the evening. and it's still snowing now, since about 7 this morning

@Benjol - where are you? It snowed here pretty much non stop since Tuesday

Swissland

ah, well the UK is having "worst snow in living memory (BBC)" in some places, including my area

Ugh. I moved closer to the equator, and I haven't seen snow yet. I miss it.

3:03 PM
@PopularDemand Where? Just curious.

@YiJiang Mid-Atlantic USA.

Currently looking out the window at all my colleagues slip sliding around :) I'm taking the train, fortunately.

There was a storm last night; as it moves north it'll become snow, but for us it was just a lot of rain.

it's raining and extremely windy here this morning in PA

It's sunny here for once.

@MarcGravell you're quite welcome. Did @JeffAtwood have the same concern? :p

@Fosco I presume that it comes from an api exception, but I've not had time to debug it.

@rchern It's a feature, not a bug. You have to be dedicated if you want to be a Stack Flair user!

Right. That.
Also, instead of [status-bydesign], totally should have gone with

@Benjol around 0

@radp Give or take how much? 0.3m? 0.5m?

I have rain here...that's rather boring.

it is sunny here

It's snowing here

Also yay

It's just sunny and cold here.

dayum...136 MB of updates

@YiJiang 23 delete votes to go!

4:14 PM
Whoa, "This post still needs 24 votes from other users to delete"?
@Lance, are we talking about the same question? (Romance)

4:35 PM
@PopularDemand Yep, a question truly deserving of deletion.

Aha: "popular questions require more deletion votes to be deleted, at a ratio of 20:1 - a question's popularity is defined by the sum of its score plus all its answers' scores. For example, a question with score 20 will require 4 deletion votes (3 base votes + 1 popularity vote)" -Jarrod
I voted to delete, but now I wonder if that question falls under the same grandfather clause as "Funniest Programmer Cartoon."
Also, nobody is ever going to be able to edit the [faq] tag wiki. Sad.

Q: Can I disallow purchases on my Xbox 360 even when I have points available?

indivOn my Xbox 360 I have my account sign on automatically so that others in the household can watch Netflix. But I've noticed that now my account has 0 points because my 3 year old has purchased random stuff accidentally. Is there a way to put points on my Live account but do something like passwo...

Ouch, heh

my 3 year old has ....
Christ, what next, 3 year olds writing jsfiddle hacks and chatting in meta?

@AidenBell Based on some of the conversations we've had in here....

@YiJiang - how old are you again?
@PopularDemand - my thinking exactly :P

4:43 PM
You both went where I was thinking about going :P

Well, at least we all have the mental age of children

I like to think it keeps us fresh and imaginative...or something.
2

lmao

Serves that guy right, though.
Who has a three-year-old? Seriously?

Well, IE8 was coded by a three year old, so I suspect 3 year old coders are prolific

4:45 PM
Yeah, really. I'd upgrade to the self-sufficient model right away.

@PopularDemand - who has a three year old and enough time for XBox

There's always enough time for Xbox

My driveway atm ^

That's quite a bit of snow.

@AidenBell Lucky.

4:47 PM
@GeorgeMarian - can you downvote it or something for me?

Looks much more elegant than the muddy, cold cesspool that is my backyard at the moment. Also seems like it might be a bit of a hassle to shovel out, heh.

@TimStone - hence me just taking pictures holding the shovel (see shovel handle in shot)

@AidenBell lol

:D

@AidenBell I um ... have been partially involved in getting the 5 year old niece a netbook, and in providing the 8 year old with an iPhone 3G (new at purchase) and uh ... yeah ...

4:48 PM
@drachenstern - well just make sure you install a real distro for the 5 year old. Even a 5 year old isn't braindead enough for Ubuntu ... go with Fedora

@drachenstern What does an eight-year-old need with a cell phone, much less an iPhone?

@AidenBell pffft, I have to support the damned thing, nobody else can, so Win7 it is.
@PopularDemand it gets better... sadly

@AidenBell Ow. And I don't even use Ubuntu.

@drachenstern - does your niece pay you in Disney money for it?
@PopularDemand - [statement revoked due to misread]

My mother-in-law is the one that purchased the netbook for the 5 year old, and I preloaded it with kid friendly DVDs that have been handbrake-d down to iPhone quality, in anticipation of the MIL getting her an iPad in the next year or so ... and her mother also has a laptop, so the kid really has her own netbook ...
the 9 year old has a netbook as well, but he barely uses it, mostly just to do backups of his iPhone when I threaten to take the iPhone away if he doesn't do a backup on it

4:51 PM
@drachenstern - sorry, meta isn't a family-friction counselling service

@PopularDemand so if he goes to visit for an overnighter, he takes it, or if he is going to be in the car for a while, they're much easier to deal with than DVD players or laptops, and can be charged easier, and have games (he's trying to catch up with me on Angry Birds)
@AidenBell +1 on that

@AidenBell Have you read meta?

@PopularDemand Rather than "Grammar", that edit should've been marked "Branding"
Thanks btw

they both have about 40 titles to choose from for syncing to their phones on movies, but songs are a little harder to come by, apparently the mom's don't feel the need to invest in quality kids albums, but I don't think they would enjoy using the mp3 player aspect of the things anyways

@TimStone - I didn't say it didn't help those from smashed-and-broken families.

4:53 PM
so yeah .. the niece will have an iPad before me, most likely ...

Ah, fair enough. ;)

@TimStone but @drachenstern is early in the process of destroying his family with technology

@AidenBell Right, better to let him do the dirty work alone so we don't have to take even the slightest shred of responsibility.

lol

@AidenBell truth be told I'm merely the tool :p

4:55 PM
iPods don't kill people, people do

someone else is doing the funding ... plus it'll be easier to manage and corral everyone when I get them on Mac's in the next two years ... a number of less headaches with this magical incantation "oh, you can't do that on a mac"
lol

@radp I guess it was both; "grammar" is just my go-to summary when I don't make major changes or do anything to content.
And you're welcome.

Saying that, the heat emission from my old PPC iBook probably destroyed my hopes at fathering children so ..

@drachenstern But that seems like such a bleak future...one where people are forced to do things on a Mac.
Hahahah

@TimStone It's not so bleak to me when they quit asking me for help
@TimStone besides, I like my black turtleneck and my jeans

4:57 PM
@drachenstern What I'm hearing here is "I'm not smart enough to con a small child out of an iPad."

Oh, right, because they'll get distracted by that damn spinning beach ball icon.

hhahhah

@PopularDemand she lives 300 miles away and they would know ...
@TimStone see, simpler life for me ;)
my wife already hates when she accidentally boots into my Ubuntu installs ;)

I should try this technique. I get so tired of people asking me things..

she swore she would never use an apple product after high school, until I put an iphone in her hand, now it's all apple all the time when we talk new tech
I'm even considering an Apple TV instead of a boxee or a googletv

4:59 PM
Child: "I want an iPad, it looks pretty"
Dad: "You know, OSX is actually BSD underneath with some OOP I/O API ...."
Child: "Dad, you are such a geek, now piss off and leave me alone."

Admittedly I have an iPhone too, mainly because HTC refused to give AT&T any of their phones that I actually liked.

@TimStone I didn't mind the Tilt except for the HORRID die a painful death you bastards video drivers that pretty much only kept me from stabbing my eyes out because I refused to think about them more than I had to
