@TimStone I do love that SVN icon decorator text + picture answer.

I realized that I forgot the deleted file icon somehow (along with the two others I still am not sure what they mean)...I've been meaning to add it in, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

@TimStone Which two?

That one is pretty clear on its own, but for the sake of completeness.
There are two other little cylinders like the yellow one on the up-to-date file, but they're different colours.

# Stop and redirect immediately to the mobile site
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING}     !sms=1         [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}        !^mobile
RewriteRule ^(.*)    mobile.mysite.co.uk$1 [QSA,NC,R,L]
thats a horrible piece of code! It has absolutely no jQuery... shame on you @TimStone

I wrote that? :P

5:04 PM
yes

@Chacha102 Oh, well...it should definitely have more jQuery.
@PopularDemand Yep. I figured it meant something like that based on the file name, but I hadn't actually seen that situation before.

@PopularDemand Code-related != need to compile code to answer.

@rchern Sometimes, not always.
@TimStone What's the other color?

I think it's grey, but let me check.
It's grey or green, hard to tell.

5:08 PM
Also, while the question does mention SO, with the SE2.0 sites, wanting to answer on a phone and have 0 code is totally acceptable.

It's called no_remotedir_ov.gif, but I'm not really sure what that implies...that the branch went missing, maybe?

@rchern Okay, but irrelevant.

@Chacha102 does @MarcGravell'ing work too if we do it on legit posts, just one more way to clutter the inbox ;)

@PopularDemand irrelevant?

@drachenstern You do realize he can delete you right? ;)

5:11 PM
You know, if you cry MarcGravell too many times, eventually the townspeople won't bother coming to help you when Marc really does attack.
2
@rchern Yeah, the OP was asking about SO intentionally and specifically, as you said.

@TimStone but but but ... he would never! I'm sure of it :p

I still maintain that wanting to answer a SO question via phone is completely valid on some questions.

@rchern I agree.

@Default Were you looking for http://chat.stackoverflow.com/ ?

@rchern absolutely

5:14 PM
@Chacha102 No, I was looking for the One Tavern.

additionally, there's no reason one couldn't write code on the iphone, it's just a laborious process...

Eh, laborious is debatable depending on the code. And come on, do you seriously load up every single piece of code you post to compile and test it?
Bottom line: it depends. You can't generalize it.
(:

@rchern I don't think any of us were actually disagreeing with that.

You mean I got on my soapbox for nothing?
2
Dammit!

@rchern I maybe load up one in 20 pieces I post to test ... the rest of the time is freeform and assumed to be understood as guidance, not exact answers ... is that wrong of me?
@rchern all soapbox sessions are valid in my opine

5:17 PM
@drachenstern I've been learning the hard way not to do this, because the OPs will just leave comments reading "I copied this in but it didn't work."

@drachenstern Definitely not. It just totally depends. If it is 1 line of jQuery changing the css and they had a typo, doing a jsfiddle for that is silly.

@rchern you've been stalking my answers have you? :p

@rchern No one ever asks questions where the answer is that they made a typo, don't be silly.

@PopularDemand and I ask them what the problem was, and make them rubberduck the damned question like a good programmer should already

> And while some may see us as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because we believe that the people who are crazy enough to think they can change StackExchange, are the ones who do.

5:21 PM
I'll never learn will I? Fastest gun in the west, with documentation, and I still managed to make it a comment stackoverflow.com/questions/4337763/…

@drachenstern I do the same thing sometimes, heh.

@Chacha102 So what you're saying is you're an Apple fanboi? [me too, just checking]
@TimStone I figure further proof I'm not repwhoring
but I probably should be

@Tim, I have no idea about no_remotedir_ov.gif.

I've gone to consult the source code on that one.

Even Subclipse's docs are empty on that, except for CVS logs.

lmao, unicorns and the build huh?
what about staring at a blank canvas and seeing the awesome inherent in it

Q: When is the internet going to be reinvented?

TheNetSucksHTML, JavaScript, CSS, XML, layout, browsers, etc - it's all crap. Anyone know if a reinvented internet is coming so that some sane development tools can be created?

@PopularDemand It doesn't appear to actually be used, so I think it's safe to ignore.

@TimStone You mean the Internet?

5:28 PM
@TimStone Fine, invalidate all my backbreaking work.

@Fosco wouldn't that be the power of the internet, when he could just reinvent it himself?

Someone just created an A51 proposal for whistleblowers titled "Wikileaks."

lmao

@Chacha102 Precisely
@PopularDemand Not my fault they included a stray icon :P

Can we please rename this "WikiLeeks"?

5:39 PM
Step right in, Sit right down, Chacha's gonna make you the fool...

Wes
has anyone ever thought. It would be easy to write a programme that could display every possible image your computer monitor could display. Of course it would take centuries to run. I wonder if its possible to copyright the output the programme will produce. In that way every photographer every website etc would be in violation of your copyright.

Hey everyone. Can't stay long, had a quick question about iFrames (icky, I know) which I thought I'd ask this room before posting. Anyone want to help? :-)

Wes
Sure

@TheUnhandledException I'll do my best.
@Wes Probably not so hard back in the CGA, B&W days.

OK. Two domains in question, A and B. Page on domain A has two iframes, named "one" and "two". iFrame "one" links to a page on domain "B". Can links in the document from domain "B" open links in iFrame "two"?

Wes
5:43 PM
@popular demand imagine a two bit per pixel 200*200 screen. That would be 2^40000 possible images

simple <a target="two"> opens a link in a new window instead...

@Wes Actually, 2^76,800
But you already said you were willing to wait for hundreds of years.

Wes
@PopularDemand yeah sorry
that 1.2696002338952963833028270993074e+23119 possible combinations. Assuming you could display 100 a second it would still take a long time to run

I got way off track though, the point I was trying to make was that by the time you get a tiny bit of the way through such a program, there'll be better monitors with more pixels and colors to deal with.

Wes
I can't be bothered to do the maths.
@TheUnhandledException I don't think its possible. A frame can't know about its parent (you can't even check for the existance of a parent) on different domains

5:45 PM
@Wes I'm afraid you're right.
I'm trying to make a certain part of our admin embeddable into third party admins
I will probably have to find another way to do this.

Wes
@TheUnhandledException you can pass back info to the server. Though through an ajax query. And that can pass it back. difficult though

is so over the iframe cross-domain issues here.

Wes
Iframe src="test.example.com?parentDoman=www.example.com&sessionIdentifier=2135132"

hey there @rchern, how are you? I've been absent so I haven't seen you recently

Wes
Then use ajax to say sessionIdentifier has done something and use a polling query on the outer domain.

5:48 PM
@Wes Hmmm, that's an idea

@TheUnhandledException She was just fired for a combination of gross negligence and embezzlement.

Wes
Pretty horrible

@Wes Huh. That may be a better solution than what @TimStone and I came up with. LOL

@TheUnhandledException You've returned!!!
quick send a message to @marcgravell

@Chacha102 Only very briefly. Work has been insane lately

5:48 PM
@TheUnhandledException I'm good. (:
@PopularDemand oy.

@rchern Glad to hear it :-)

Wes
I know theres no evidece of it on the SO sites but I am actually a programmer. and I've given this some thought before.
@TheUnhandledException Better just use an A record pointing to your code you can use subdomains with cross scripting/cookies if set up right

@rchern All things considered, it's quite odd that they're giving you three weeks to write down what you know.
@TheUnhandledException I got nothing better than what Wes suggested.

I didn't get fired...

@Wes my domain is "B" in the example. Our application opens pop-in windows for selecting files, and I wanted to give third party providers that same ability. But they may have to use pop-up windows instead. I'll figure something out, I was hoping that when they iFrame in my code, they could pass a target which my code will launch all links in, and that target could be an iFrame elsewhere in their design. But it looks like that won't work.
@Wes Possible, but we're already using subdomains and a wildcard cert, and we must SSL protect everything...

Wes
5:52 PM
@TheUnhandledException I'm saying let them. buy a subdoman + ssl costs point to your code. You need to install their certificate though. And then you need a dedicated IP. so extra charges

@Wes Ah ha, sounds good. Most will probably use popup widows anyway, I just wanted to offer the advanced solution for developers who want it
oh, wait, suddenly it works!
I am very, very confused

I have a dilemna...
I wear a watch
but it is hard for me to use my computer while wearing a watch..

oh, no it doesn't, I am an idiot :-p

Wes
@TheUnhandledException its not going to be consistant accross browsers.
@Chacha what??

@Wes It was an ID-10t error :-)
It was not working

5:56 PM
@Wes That strap of the watch gets in the way..

Wes
@rchern are you and @TimStone partners? Or in the same building?

No and no.

Wes
@TheUnhandledException you should ask that question anyway. Its a common problem and people will want an answer to it.

They just work on the super awesome chat modifier blowup thingy

@Wes Good idea, I will

Wes
5:57 PM
@rchern how do you know what the solution he came up was?

But I'm going to grab lunch first.
Thanks for the help @Wes and @PopularDemand, good to chat with you even though it was so brief @Chacha102 and @rchern
I'll be back as my workload lightens.. :-/

Wes
@rchern how do you know the solution he came up with then? Oh you don't mean now?? you mean in the past?
I think some of my messages are disappering
Woops no sorry I already asked. Just blind.

@Wes He was helping me here (in chat).

Wes
Oh I didn't see that.

@Wes it's been an ongoing struggle ;)

6:04 PM
@Wes, it was a few weeks ago.

Wes
Huh me seeing things is an ongoing struggle.
Oh cross domain frames.
its a common problem. Those two are the only two solutions I have.
and one isn't really cross domain
Well I may have a really nasty one involving flash player and global storeage but lets not go there.

someone wanna help me interpret this snippet from a coworker?
> I tried to change the web config and tell it to use “Unicode” encoding for the binding configuration, but I still got back the 400 probably because it was sending the request with utf8 encoding…
if you send a UTF8 and the server is set to expect Unicode ... aren't those fundamentally the same thing (to the naive observer, I'm aware of UTF8 vs UTF16 etc etc etc)

@drachenstern Do you know that the problem isn't with your co-worker?

Wes
UTF8 is a flavour of unicode. He doesn't know what he's saying.

@PopularDemand implying a PEBKAC on the other end of my email string?

Wes
6:10 PM
Unicode is a computing industry standard for the consistent encoding, representation and handling of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in conjunction with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, the latest version of Unicode consists of a repertoire of more than 109,000 characters covering 93 scripts, a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, an enumeration of character properties such as upper and lower case, a set of reference data computer f...

@wes yes you've nailed my point, however there's still UTF-16, UTF-32, etc, which I don't know immediately and off the top of my head how IIS / ASP.NET interprets "Unicode" in a web.config (I'm not even sure where the hell he's configuring that)

Maybe he did something like encoding="Unicode" by mistake.

Wes
IIS should be able to use any flavour of unicode. However windows falls back on the BOM

@PopularDemand perhaps, but the problem is a client app that we're trying to inject our monitoring app in between which transmits POX (or so the acronym I've been told, sounds stupid as hell) and the client app talks to the destination server fine, but his code doesn't receive properly. I'm afraid I'm going to have to dig into his code ...

Wes
So if he was editing the file in a non windows editor or one that strips the BOM then he may have problems.

6:12 PM
I also don't care for his coding style ;)

Wes
Make sense?

@Wes if the input was being generated by hand, sure, but it's app to app...

Wes
No idea then sorry

returns
Ahahah

I have a sneaking suspicion he's trying to accept something OTHER THAN a string from the client ...
Won, Won Tim Stone, ah-ha-ha-ha

I was more or less laughing at this:

@rchern are you and @TimStone partners? Or in the same building?

Wes
Sorry the conversation confused me.
What can I say

It's OK, I was just amused. :P

@TimStone and <kbd>ctrl</kbd><kbd>up</kbd> .... <kbd>r</kbd> was too much for you? (sorry, couldn't resist the <kbd>'s )

...Yes. ;)

@TimStone ok then ;)

6:18 PM
shrugs

Wes
So what was your solution then @TimStone & @rchern

No, we don't discuss the solution anymore. :P

Wes
Oh thanks

@Wes It's nothing anyone would ever use, so you aren't missing out.

I want to be able to star my own post after someone else stars it ;) why can't I?

Wes
6:20 PM
Like mine were.

@TimStone if only ...

@TimStone Just so you don't feel bad, someone has worse code than you:

@jAndy EW your code is UGLY

Whew, I'm so relieved now.

@drachenstern It's assumed that you like your own message, otherwise you wouldn't have sent it. If the assumption is false, well, you're doing it wrong.

Wes
That link doesn't have evidence.
@PopularDemand have a star

6:22 PM
@PopularDemand But I may not like my own message ... what if I like it squared?

@Wes Scroll up, he links to a source page.

@Chacha102 I think it's hilarious that less than a month ago Raynos was soaking up knowledge from those guys like a sponge under a faucet ... now he's going to criticize jAndy? ;)

@Chacha102 Is there actually something terribly offensive about my part of the code, by the way? It's probably not work quality, but if I did something horrible I'd rather not leave it that way. :P
@drachenstern Yeah, I was a little confused by that turnaround myself. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who noticed.

@PopularDemand who links to what where?

I second this confusion.
Oh, wait, I think I follow now.

@Chacha102: many <script> tags in your head section, bad! put them to the bottom and use https://github.com/jAndreas/Supply

oh you meant on the other chat room ... I was looking at the supply.js right now actually

Wes
@TheUnhandledException I've just realised by asking the question here and me answering here. You've stolen some rep I may or may not have got. Not that I would have seen the question anyway.

As for Raynos, I never poke my head into the JS room, so I have no idea what he or anyone else in there is like.

@TimStone No its just a new meme I'm trying to get started

6:28 PM
as for the quality / style of the code, looks like any other good concise framework package that I've bothered to look at in the past, and aside from the attempted columnar formatting, I don't see any particular flaws with it being ugly or not ugly

Wes
@PopularDemand actually I've no idea how you reached that figure. 2px *2px = 4 pixels at 2bpp thats 8 possible combinations no?

Ok, so I have a problem

@Wes 200 x 200 x 2bpp no?

yes 200*200*2 no?

notice how it doesn't load..
I can't figure out why

@Wes I gave the answer for CGA, which is 320x240.

Wes
I may actually write that programme just for the hell of it but I think I use 3bbp on off and grey.

6:30 PM
@Chacha102 are you trying to do a onebox?

Wes
Ahh that makes sense.

Also, I feel a little bad for johnjbarton.

@PopularDemand who?

@Chacha102 Ah, very good..then...I guess. :P

Q: Why do I have to have logins on a zillion other overflow sites. One should be enough!??

johnjbartonI wanted to answer a question about Firebug: Firebug 1.6 bug but it was moved to another site. When I asked why the question was moved, my question what also moved to yet another site! I don't want to login in to three different sites. The entire reason that stackoverflow works is that it is on...

Wes
6:31 PM
@PopularDemand Joe Hewett replacement?

@Wes Who?

Wes
Firebug right?

@Wes Looks like it.

@PopularDemand ah well, what're you gonna do? I think we'll survive

@drachenstern Continue to think that the migration notice should be more obvious, so first-time users don't get bamboozled and angry.

6:33 PM
nvm, I think it has something to do with the offline nature of the web app
I think I haven't told chrome to load it remotely, and thus it refuses to load it

Wes
Yeah I believe JJBarton who I didn't know was a SO member was firebug main contributer Joe Hewett was the first as I remember.

@TimStone Hehehehe.

Wes
Just from memory

@rchern ;)

@PopularDemand you're assuming they're going to be content with having their question migrated .. he clearly is not. He also clearly does not understand openid
3

6:37 PM
@drachenstern I know perfectly well that he's wrong, but I still feel kinda bad for him.

@PopularDemand meh ... when I find that the community constantly does something I don't agree with I tend to investigate the why or I leave the community. He opted for #2 immediately. I empathize with your feeling bad for him ... but I don't. But I do empathize.

What have we started blabbering on about now?

@Chacha102 the fact that the tardis is out of alignment
If only I knew where I had put my sonicscrewdriver

In slightly less banal news: hurrah 2010 Moderator Elections!

Can we talk about something more interesting?
Like how paint drys?

6:40 PM
@PopularDemand We'll stop moving questions as soon as Firebug starts working correctly.

Slowly.

Should I run for moderator?

Compromises are the clear answer.

I think this exhausted the drying paint topic.

@Chacha102 Muffin cat for mod!

6:41 PM
@Chacha102 on what site?

oh wait... its for math... booooooo

Hm, all the Math SE candidates so far are MOers.

@PopularDemand Did you mean: "Huurah 2010 StackExchange™ PeopleEmpowering DiamondOMatic™"?

I don't understand the self-nomination rule. Isn't asking "how do I become a mod" or saying "I want to be a mod" usually the quickest way to get yourself on the "never let this person be a mod" list?
@radp Uh... sure, I guess.

@PopularDemand Exactly. That's why I don't want any stars or up votes.
7

6:45 PM
@PopularDemand Not when there's a voting process?

@PopularDemand This levels the playing field, though. Because everyone you can vote for has to nominate themselves

can anyone explain jeff's comment on there?

@balpha I don't see the relevance.
@drachenstern I assume he deleted an OT comment.

@drachenstern Can you quote it for my convenience? :P

@TimStone sure, one moment:
> please keep comments on-topic for the specific candidate. Thanks. – Jeff Atwood♦ 12 hours ago

6:47 PM
@PopularDemand Noone says you can't have a "nominator moderations" meta question in which you encourage people to sign up

@balpha The problem with such people is that they're likely to want mod abilities for the wrong reasons. If "leveling the field" is the only effect, then you're just going to end up with multiple bad options.

Wes
@PopularDemand I put a comment into this. On meta. Probably going to get flagged for abuse now.

@drachenstern Ah, thanks.

Rather I'm surprised by the lack on a flag button on the election pages.

@Wes Link? Or at least, which meta?

6:48 PM
@PopularDemand and on that site that's pretty much the problem they're fighting ;) ... I think that it's a matter of "I want to be king so I'm going to be king" versus "I want to be mod because I see a problem, what do you think, should I be mod?"

@Wes I hope you're being facetious.

@PopularDemand remember the chaos with "I nominate X" but X doesn't want to be a mod in the previous SO elections?

@balpha No, I wasn't really around yet for those. Looking through discussion now.

also, "hey, someone nominated me, maybe I could try it" is surely no better than "I want to be a mod"

Wes
@PopularDemand where the question was migrated to. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/71363/…

6:49 PM
For example I wouldn't nominate myself, but I got some support from Meta so... why not? Worst that happens I get a diamond.

Wes
@radp whats the best that happens?

@Wes Oh, you're still talking about that question.

Jeff reads your writeup and decides to suspend you instead.

Based on previous experience moderating a reasonably large community website, I find even people who think they want to assume moderator positions often find out otherwise in the end. Nudging people into the position is an even greater recipe for disaster, from what I've seen.
So, it makes sense, even if not everyone who puts themselves forward would make a good match, heh.

Yeah, personally I'm fine with having owner access on the Gaming chatroom with other guys. That's "moderatory" enough for me...
Moving stuff around, pinning stuff, spamming feeds, getting blamed and the such.

Wes
6:51 PM
@PopularDemand yup that one.

@TimStone Once elected, moderators may hold the position as long as they wish, unless they become inactive or exhibit gross misbehavior.

@drachenstern That'd embarbutt SE in the process, though.

@Wes Whoa, you weren't kidding.

Wes
I wasn't kidding what?
About what to be more accurate.

@Wes Oh the irony!

6:53 PM
@Wes are you seriously suggesting that these questions should stay on SO because the poster is the firebug guy?
0
Q: Why do questions on Stack Overflow get stolen and posted on other SE sites?

For example: Firebug 1.6 bug It's really obnoxious, in my opinion.

2
Q: Why do I have to have logins on a zillion other overflow sites. One should be enough!??

I wanted to answer a question about Firebug: Firebug 1.6 bug but it was moved to another site. When I asked why the question was moved, my question what also moved to yet another site! I don't want to login in to three different sites. The entire reason that stackoverflow works is that it is on...

I find I'd like to upvote that meta question.

@drachenstern Right, but you want to set it up so that there's the least likelihood that they'll start dropping like flies.
Though I don't know if you were trying to say anything with that quote or just providing additional information. :P

@TimStone and that's like saying I want to build my house to be impervious to all things but easily repaired

@Wes He really does seem to be "the firebug guy."

@TimStone additional info

6:54 PM
Ah, OK. :)

NASA announcement about mono lake in ten minutes

@PopularDemand Yep. Which concerns me in a way based on those questions, but.

What would cause a user's name to be bold on a CW user card?

That said... Firebug is a developer tool right?

Example?
@radp Yeah...the original question was about something blinking though.
0
Q: Firebug 1.6 bug

Adriano GondimIs it possible to fix this bug without downloading an older verson of it? When I click on the search text field on top right side, it keeps on blinking.

Wes
6:56 PM
What I just think the pee wee effect mentioned in the blog should take effect

@Wes you seems to be misunderstanding something

Wes
nudge people in the right direction before migrating?

Which is kinda "meh" to me.

that question was not posted by johnjbarton

Wes
Okay

6:57 PM
he just wanted to answer it, and refuses to do that anywhere else than on SO

He should have been more on his game, he had 8 hours to answer it before it got migrated... ;)

I think we need a WOM. Wheel of Migration. Spin it to see what site a question should be migrated to.
6

@rchern Then we can combine them into a WOBWOM?

@rchern This is the current implementation.

Not that that makes any sense, I just like the funny sounding word.

Wes
6:59 PM
Okay thats a different matter then. sorry for the confusion. I only saw the linked quesiton.

I still don't get why we can't migrate anything to anywhere.

@radp People get confused with many options.
@drachenstern Thanks!

Wes
And yeah I was serious about questions staying @balpha
