12:10 AM
/me is now actively looking for new places to move to
Any suggestions for nice places on the east cost of the US, just let me know!

@TheUnhandledException The west coast? ;)

LOL
It's a bit far ;-)

A bit of a culture shock, too.

@GeorgeMarian shakes head
@TheUnhandledException I already made my suggestion :P

Yes, duly noted, thanks!
By the way I guess that you're in MA or VT, but that's just a guess :-)
Any other suggestions?

12:19 AM
jQuery
I just popped in and read no backlog whatsoever, but it's sure to help.
4

I'm thinking maybe the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ashville area

@radp LOL

@radp Of COURSE! I'll move there!! Um, do you know ho I drive there from I-40? ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Ah, interesting guess. But no. ;)

@TheUnhandledException You don't, jQuery comes to you.

12:21 AM
@TimStone You're right, Google returns a ton of "Tim Stone"s. Must be something about a common first and last name combination ;-)

I'm surprisingly difficult to find on Google, for some reason.

@radp Can I use jQuery to remove my new landlord from my life? If so,could you help me with the code for that?

$("#wife").find(".landlord").destroy()
duh.

#wife?

AWESOME. Thanks. Sorry, I'm a jQuery n00b

12:22 AM
Hahah

Make enough money consulting with jQuery to buy his building

@radp nah, just detach() ... works well enough for Fringe division ;)

@drachenstern I'd rather destroy() at this point :-)

@drachenstern You can never be too cautious.

@TheUnhandledException and yet you spelled it right and knew what that the solution required it ;)

12:23 AM
Well you can, there's always $.nuke(FROM_ORBIT)

@TheUnhandledException @radp apparently you gentlemen have never considered firing a rocket at right angles to reality

@drachenstern There's solutions that don't involve jQuery?
4

@TimStone have a star

Actually
I have found one site
one heretic site
that doesn't use jQuery

@TimStone <50s-era-film>That is correct young Timmy. Consider the Polynesian Island tribe of {degenerate into B&W film about the Polynesian tribe of jQueryless}</psa>

12:24 AM
@radp You found my site? :-p

They're too poor, so they have to resort to a cheap plastic imitation.

@TheUnhandledException @TimStone nah, have many stars ;)

> $
function ()
{
 return document.getElementById.apply(document, arguments)
}
> $$
function ()
{
 return document.querySelectorAll.apply(document, arguments)
}

@drachenstern I thought that's why there's that laptop for every child project?

@radp HAHAHAHAHAHA

12:26 AM
@TimStone ahem ... <psa> <50s-era-film> ... hmmm

@TheUnhandledException that is going to mess with jQuerists :D

@drachenstern Right, so a film from 2050...I'm not seeing the problem here.

@TimStone LOLOLOLOL I don't get it :p

I dunno, that one may have been run into the ground. Moving right along.

Ah, it's good to be back here. Might not help my productivity but it sure helps my spirits :-D

12:29 AM
@TheUnhandledException btw I wasn't kidding.

@radp Ha! that's really funny. I wasn't kidding either but we at least don't use a cheap plastic imitation
(Although the JS is minified so you wouldn't know at first glance)

Your minifier also uses $ as a function name?
EEEEVIL! :P

@TimStone oh you'ld like that wouldn't you, some of us don't have the luxury of moving right along
Why, when we were kids ...

LOL. No, we use Prototype.js. Yes, I know, even more evil, but hey, our whole system is built upon it :-)

Hah ;)
@TheUnhandledException I didn't mind what fairly brief exposure I had to Prototype, but I was never a fan of their documentation.
Though it was better than Dojo at the time that Zend decided to partner up for close framework support, which seemingly had no documentation..

12:34 AM
@TimStone Their docs have improved greatly in the past 2 years. Scriptaculous, however, has not

meh, I only know jQuery because it's perfect and does all thingsâ„¢, but I've never used anything else so I can't tell

do any of them have a page like api.jquery.com ?

@TimStone I really like Prototype.js' class hierarchy system, and we have many, many, many JS classes built upon it, so switching would be a major pain
@drachenstern api.prototypejs.org

I'm building some basic userscript on top of die2nite's $$ and it isn't that horrible tbh.

I need to check out die2nite and minecraft

12:36 AM
Minecraft > Die2Nite.
If nothing else because Minecraft is €10, Die2Nite Hero mode is €12/mo.

@radp I used to write all of my own JavaScript...I used to write all of my own everything. While the end result wasn't terrible as far as it doing what I needed it to do, it was certainly more trouble than it was worth.

@TimStone Very much the same here

@TimStone That's because JS has a dozen different list types and they all suck

@TheUnhandledException not quite the same is it? :p

like, why would a list and a node list share the same methods?
MADNESS.

12:38 AM
@drachenstern I'm not sure I understand? WHat are you asking?

Hah :P

@TheUnhandledException the way they're laid out isn't quite the same, idk, something about the jquery layout speaks to me, whereas the proto layout scares me slightly

it's obviously more useful to have for(item in document.getElementsByClassName("foo")) have item iterate over [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ..., n, n+1, get()]

@drachenstern To each his own :-)

@TheUnhandledException indeed sir ;)

12:40 AM
(n+1 is length)
It's a number of indexes, one too many, followed by a function. The perfect iterator for a list of DOM elements.
nite

Yeaaaah, heh. G'night

I'm gonna follow suit, have a company dinner party to attend a whopping 8 minutes away ...

Enjoy :P

tune in tomorrow, same bat channel, same bat<strike>shit insanity spewing from my mouth like I knew what I was talking about</strike> time

12:44 AM
ROFLMAO

Be sure to take pictures and then later randomly crop people out so people have only a half account of what happened at the dinner.

Have a good one @drachenstern

lol, I doubt I'll be there that long ;) cheers

1:19 AM
Hello... @Tim?
@The?

'Ello

Awesome, I guessed who was here correctly.

That you did. I'll buy you a beer for that. I'm here for only a few minutes more, then headed to find dinner and hen back to work sadly

Do either of you know of a good MD5 checksum utility that works on Win7?

1:22 AM
Not I, sorry

I just tried it, works fine in Win7

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897441.aspx with the -h option should work too, I think.

Ok, I'm outta here, catch you guys later! Thanks for cheering me up @radp @TimStone @drachenstern and @GeorgeMarian!

See ya @TheUnhandledException, be well.

@TheUnhandledException See you later!

1:30 AM
@DanGrossman So it does. Thanks!

Q: Regex on ;) smilie

KolinkA minor inconvenience my users have found is that if they use a smilie such as >_> at the end of parentheses (kind of like this: >_>) then during processing it is run through htmlspecialchars(), making it >_>) - you can see the problem, I think. The ;) at the end is then...

1:56 AM
Anyone else seen the "How to get power armor training in Fallout:New Vegas" Gaming SE ad?

@PopularDemand The one with the little guy who's all... "All this and more can be yours!" ...or something?

Well, since we last talked a few more users signed up for the dermatology proposal. Thank you all.

@user152426 Glad to hear it.
@TimStone I don't remember that.
There is a guy, but he's not saying that.
He is, however, a copyright infringement, I'm afraid.

He's not actually saying it, but he has his arms like one of the prize girls from The Price is Right.

(Which is why I brought it up.)

2:04 AM
Ah ha

Has anyone said that they got permission, or anything?

No idea.
Do we /blame Jin?

I'd hate to see Gaming SE get into trouble over that, because I love both SE and F:NV.

@pop

(And initialisms.)
@TimStone I guess so...

2:05 AM
lol, sorry @popularDemand, perhaps I could get you to follow along? We need more experienced users to help all the noobs

The WOB says to blame waffles...maybe for not blaming Jin.

@user152426 I know I said I know a lot of med students and residents, but I am not, myself, on the doctor track (yet).
So I would have approximately nothing to contribute.
I can't even remember the difference between a cream and a lotion.

can you refer some of your friends to SE and the proposal?
simply stated, I need help with it

I could try, sure.
But you'll still run into the ROBLOX problem.

I also have a number of med students at my disposal...though unfortunately not any that are active on SE in any way, shape, or form. I'll mention it to those that might be interested at any rate, but no promises on my end either, heh.

2:08 AM
no problems
every user counts
well, every user with 200+ rep lol

In case I forgot to link it before:

Q: Impossible to Launch Site With All New Users on Area 51?

John ShedletskyI've been trying to get a technical support site for our game, ROBLOX up and running on Area-51 for the past several days. I whipped 180 people into a fury and sent that to that page (for some reason my referral count - once 150+, bounced back to ~90). Most sites launch at between 200-400 commit...

But, yes, I'll pass the word along. Though my track record is pretty bad; looks like the one serious proposal I made has been shuttered due to inactivity.

so this is what I am thinking; once the proposal goes to stage II, commitment, I am going to simply try to get dermatologists to sign-up for other exisiting SE sites that might resonate with their other interests (cooking, photography, english, etc). Then tell them if they like the SE dynamic, check out the derm proposal
it will be a long, slow, horrible process, but I am willing to give it a shot
if they first start using another SE site, perhaps I can get their reps up

@user152426 For the second time today -- or the first time today, if you're using crazy SO UTC time -- I am proud to award someone the Dedicated badge, which has zero official support.

thanks
I just want to get this proposal through. My target is to get it into beta testing by 1 year.

2:31 AM
@PopularDemand - Also, you called shenanigans yesterday, but I am a coder at heart - was that just a cop out because you couldn
't find my easter eggs?
there's no shame in it - lol, jk

@user152426 I'm going to find that in the transcript, but you are correct, I was unable to master your easter eggs.
I didn't try that hard, but I doubt I would have gotten farther if I had.
Oh, there it is. I also don't know any coders who have enough free time to go to med school, so my declaration stands.

well now you know one

I dunno... it could all be an elaborate ruse.

could be lol

1 hour later…
3:58 AM
/starts creating 50,000 DB tables

4:15 AM
Good Marrow

hi
35000/50000....

4:35 AM
word

Look who taught that class :x

4:52 AM
@DanGrossman Nice.

<~ Wants to attend

If you invent the time machine to do it, i wouldn't mind paying some people a visit. ;)

Jin
are you guys programmers? :)

arent you ?

@Jin We need at least one hardware guy for that time machine.

@Jin Whatever gave you that impression?

@Jin Of course. :P
@PopularDemand Don't forget to blame @Jin

5:08 AM
Also, I just saw an article about CSI: Miami in the paper. I knew it was about the show because its image was a big photo of David Caruso.
Except... it was Julian Assange. They're nearly identical!

@PopularDemand LOL You make a good point.

Jin
what makes programmers programmers?

@Jin Erm... they program things?

Sunglasses.... OYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

I assume you want something more than my usual answer of jQuery?

5:11 AM
Not sure what you're getting at, here.

Jin
designing programmers.se next. hitting a wall

@Jin The incessant need to be right?

Jin
sorry, i meant visual elements that are associated with programmers

@GeorgeMarian That's sort of a job requirement.

5:13 AM
@mootinator One that I fulfill on a daily basis. :)
@Jin You already have 1's and 0's, right? ;)

My minty tic tacs smell oddly sweet...I'm not a fan of this deception. ...I mean, er...what we were talking about before? Visual elements associated with programmers?

@Jin Don't work too hard on that one. Just throw together five slapdash mockups and post them with title "Best Programmers SE design?"

@Jin Yeah ... you notice StackOverflow doesn't really have a theme, just some colors in a nice design

@Jin programmers are made of awesomeness and unicorn poop
2

Based on the content I've been linked to, I think that you should just model it after a boxing ring. A boxing ring that looks like a cubicle.

5:15 AM
@jin Just use some faded out XML and call it good. That always seems to work on TV.
Or better yet, HTML. ;)

COFFEE

Or, just make an animated matrix screensaver background.
That would never get annoying.

@Chacha102 True dat.

NEVER.

Jin
i think programmers will use their own greasemonkey script to override whatever I come up with anyway, right??? :)
4

5:17 AM
No, that's just us. Because we're evil. :P

Jin
i know for sure some already do for the new SE sites..

@Chacha102 Can't find the link now, but Jeff said the original sites are going to get looked at for redesign somewhere down the line.

Alcohol has be regularly mentioned as a requirement when reverse engineering. That's sorta programming related.

@Jin Really? I've actually been quite fond of your designs, not sure what I'd try to change. Though I think I did poke at Gaming a bit..
But then it came out of beta and everything looked good :)

Faded use case diagram for the current screen.

5:18 AM
@Jin In that case, just display boxes with labels that indicate their class or ID or anchor for easy reference.

Jin
@PopularDemand brilliant. my work for this week is done then.

Yes, make it a giant UML diagram.

@Jin Make it look like FACEBOOK
Oh wait... that will scare programmers away.. nvm

@TimStone Good point. UML is a programming related visual.

Jin
5:20 AM
i'll make it command line input only. no more clicky click.

@Jin can you tell me what do you use for your art ?

Jin
@Reno mostly photoshop.

wacom + photshop ?

@Jin @rchern will build a shrine to you

Jin
@Reno for the Beta Sketchy theme, yes I used a lot of Wacom for handdrawn stuff.

Oct 19 at 20:36, by Popular Demand
@radp They should just make it a command line interface, a la http://uni.xkcd.com

As soon as I tab out the silent room gets 52 messages...!

@Jin Really? No Illustrator?

Oct 19 at 20:38, by Michael Mrozek
That would be so simple too. I'm definitely doing this

Jin
@george I use Illustrator for vector logos

Not sure how much progress he made.

5:21 AM
@Jin do you have a deviant art account ?

@PopularDemand I haven't seen the end result yet, he must be slacking.

But that was my suggestion for Unix SE, anyways.

Jin
@reno I do, but I haven't used it in years. and I didn't post there often.. jinny76.deviantart.com/gallery

lol same here

Hmm, seriously, it is hard to do this without resorting to stereotypes. Those would be funny for all of five seconds.

5:22 AM

female night elf?

Jin
@dan from my WoW days..

@PopularDemand I posed for advertising material for my department, and the photographer was greatly saddened by the fact that I didn't have anything shiny to put on the computers in the background. We ended up going with the university's website, since code is boring.

I need to take some new photos.. too much school

5:23 AM
I don't play WoW anymore but I preordered Cataclysm for two friends as their hannukah/xmas gifts

@Jin I will sleep on this and perhaps post ideas in this room tomorrow.

Jin
I was a WoW addict for a long time...

I'm gonna be ditching this Popsicle stand as soon as Cata comes out..

Bye, tavernfolk.

I'm trying hard to stay away myself :>

5:25 AM
G'bye

@DanGrossman Oy. That reminds me. The gf and have yet to buy the expansion. And, oh yah. I need to reboot into Windblowz at some time add a new skill to my training queue in Eve-Online.

you guys are merely temporary entertainment until I am able to battle the mighty Deathwing and, along with my mighty hero companions, banish him into oblivion.

what is this i dont even

@Jin Me too. Not so much anymore, thankfully.

You can preorder at battle.net and download the game now. Then you can play as soon as it's turned on in 5 days.

Jin
5:25 AM
I think if I ever go back to Wow, my wife will leave me for real.

lulz

But I can't get Collectors Edition...

the only game i ever played is monkey island
and it was fab

I have all the other collectors editions :/

I don't have a wife... I'm undecided if that is good or bad

Jin
5:26 AM
Getting into that hardcore raiding guild was tougher than any real life jobs I've applied..

WoW:CE/BC:CE/WotLK:CE/SC2:CE...

my guild is just laying low right now before the expansion

@Jin A bit unrelated, but before I forget, Popular Demand had a question earlier (see the next few messages) about something used in one of the advertisements for Gaming. Not sure if you're involved with those or not, but figured it was worth a mention. :)

@DanGrossman The original was the only one I bothered buying. In fact, I didn't actually buy LotW. I just started playing again, sorta, a few months ago.
@Chacha102 What sever are you guys on?

@DanGrossman I grabbed myself the Collector's Edition of SC2 too, good stuff.

5:28 AM
Originally, Zul'jin

@GeorgeMarian Tichondrius

I remember being in a chat room quite like this when I first heard of this new Warcraft game coming out... applied and got into the beta test...

Jin
@TimStone ok are you guys talking about that lil cartoon guy?

@Chacha102 I think I may have a toon there. Who knows. I'm on Frostmane & Frosfwolf mostly.

I stayed far away from WoW after the massive amount of hours I spent playing Diablo II
@Jin Yeah, apparently.

5:30 AM
The day WoW went live (after 2 weeks of withdrawal from the end of beta) I chose the last server on the list (Zul'jin alphabetically).

@DanGrossman The beta was my favorite time, I'm afraid. Then they screwed paladins 2-weeks before going live. =/

Jin
@TimStone he's not from Fallout. he's from old clipart library which is in public domain

Works for me. :)

I'm on Silver Hand and Echo Isles mainly, this doesn't overlap with anyone anywhere, apparently ;)

@TimStone Ironically, I blame Diablo II for my RSI.

5:32 AM
@GeorgeMarian I had far too many level 99 characters, heh.

Actually, there is a large local guild on Silver Hand.

Heh. I wasn't that addicted. :)

I blame it for stunting my social adventures. :P

But they're the wrong faction.

But, I did spend a week, laid up with sezied-up hands. That wasn't exactly fun.

Jin
5:33 AM
@TimStone he's from set #5 sixrevisions.com/resources/…

Ouch

Ouch, that doesn't sound like fun at all.

So apparently the TSA set up a checkpoint in a Bus Station..

5:34 AM
Kinda scary, at the time. Thankfully, I learned some exercises which have helped me avoid a relapse. And now, I'm a fanatic about ergonomics.

sigh

@Jin Ah, cool. I figured everything was on the level, but I figured I'd ping you about it just in case.

@GeorgeMarian Ever come across this? prevent-rsi.com

^ Guild on my server
They have a registered trademark on their name, appear in multiple books and TV series, own their name across all WoW realms...

@Chacha102 Why must I be provoked to move out of the country time and time again?

5:36 AM
Guinness Book of World Records record holder: Oldest Guild

@mootinator That I have not. Thanks for the link.

Jin
@tim np. the fact that you guys thought it was from Fallout means that Ad works! I intentionally made it look like it's an official Fallout Ad.

Damn, I missed the Bag of Crap.

Heheh, good job! ;)

Very interesting. Something close to the cause to remind you and guide you through stretching exercises.

5:39 AM
@GeorgeMarian My office provides some support for that. I've never attempted to install it myself.

@jin I've been hitting F5 like a monkey trying to catch a glimpse of this ad.
Then again, I'm not that familiar with Fallout.
@mootinator The "buy it" gave me some pause. Then again, it does seems like an effective approach.

Jin
there are 3 of them

Q: What programming language generates fewest hard-to-find bugs?

Magnus WolffeltWhat language, in your opinion, allows the average programmer to output features with the least amount of hard-to-find bugs? This is of course, a very broad question, and I'm interested in very broad and general answers and wisdoms. Personally I find that I spend very little time looking for str...

Really?

I have a suspicion that I've seen one of them, but again I'm not that familiar with Fallout.
@TimStone Heh.

gamers are used to vocal communication nowadays, maybe one of you should find a way of transcribing the audio , ... just sayin'

@mootinator Perfect aim?

Q: What language, or language feature, do you wish made it to the mainstream?

MacneilSome languages in the past have been influential without ever reaching wide adoption. For example, many languages owe much to the design of Algol 68, even though few compilers were ever written for it. The Dylan language was killed by Apple but had a clean and interesting design. What other prog...

This is the last place I want to seriously talk politics. Everything you say here is logged and searchable for all eternity.

I just want to troll that question with "checked exceptions".

@DanGrossman Wow. How did I not notice the date? /headdesk

@mootinator Hahah :P

@DanGrossman Having your baggage handled isn't politics :)

I picked a poor time to see what's going on in here

5:56 AM
@DanGrossman I thought that was going to be a PETA ad.

Tammy Banovac, clad in undergarments and sitting in a wheelchair, failed to pass the Transportation Security Administration screening process Tuesday when security officers detected traces of nitrates on her wheelchair.

Feeling violated by previous hand searches, she shows up wearing as little as possible to leave nothing to the imagination. They still think she has a bomb...?

It's one of those new invisible bombs. Some people say that such things don't exist, but that's what they said about unicorns.

It was one of those "traces of fecal matter" bombs.
