7:00 PM
probably; we have the data, after all...

I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but it is kind of weird to see messages being imported and not know which are

Since I keep forgetting to report this little chat issue:
0
Q: In Chat scrolling using PgUp/PgDown scrolls slightly more than one page

RichardWhile in Chat if I use the keyboard to page up and down a few lines of chat are skipped. It seems chat steps a couple of lines too far. This is on FF3.6.8, Win 7/x64.

@Richard - I wonder if the bottom bar isn't being allowed for... interesting.

that's pretty much by design -- I don't see a good way to fix that

7:01 PM
Yay, we can post blank messages!

@Cha - fixed (really); let me know where you're playing ;p

@Marc that's my assulption

@MarcGravell 2 seconds
test message to chat feedback

But it seems the bottom bar seems to be deeper than the missing space.

1 message moved from The Tavern (General)

7:02 PM
Never assule - it makes an ass out of u and le. Or something like that.

yeah, pageup gives a little bit of overlap

No message in from room
wait..
there it is
just takes a while

We have some... magic.

Ok, it works as excepted

Not all time intervals are equal.

7:03 PM
I got messages in from and to rooms, and the message was moved

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.
3

I still think there should be like an R or something that tells you it was moved
Nearby where the Stars usually show up

@balpha You should send that into the Reader's Digest, they have a page for people like you.

Whenever I see "1 message moved to/from" I'm always confused about which message it's referring to

BTW, formatting of starred area: seeing line break in the "10" against ScottH's message
This one:

7:05 PM
Marc, what if you just made the transferred messages in the From room greyed?

Aug 9 at 20:51, by Scott Hanselman
You can always get another wife, but when will you get another awesome chat engine?

like faded to 25% opacity or something. That way the flow isn't broken, but the effect is still there

@richard If you care that much about a chat engine, I'm not convinced you can get another wife.

I agree with @Richard that it at times might be a little disconcerting..

@Chacha102 - sure. To do it cheaply we'll probably need to hack a few things. We'll take that under consideration ;p which just means "not right now, I've got a skype..."

7:07 PM
Of course. Just giving feedback
I'll be gone for a week, so you'll have some time before I start badgering you about it again. :P

I knew about mousing over replies to see highlighting of the message that caused the reply, but not about clicking the arrow to be taken to it. +1 for that clicking feature.

Welcome to the new decade: Java is a restricted platform, Google is evil, Apple is a monopoly and Microsoft are the underdogs

@chacha102 Nice
I wouldn't call it yet, we still need a new superpower to come up and say "Google is Evil, but we aren't"
Like M$ and IBM

@balpha @MarcGravell Does gag work on moderators? Just out of interest

You could try..

7:22 PM
Yeah, and get killed for doing it :)
Actually

I never said you wouldn't get burned...

Chacha102 Your brilliant

Why?

I retract that
Well on SO a moderator can suspend themselves
Althought it does nothing
So I though I could gag myself
Which @MarcGravell and @balpha was smart enough to disable

(And it does nothing)?
well, Gag marc
come back in 5 hours and see if it works :)

7:23 PM
Moderators can still moderate even if suspended

You'll know it works if you name is no longer blue
Yeah, because the Mod tools aren't based on rep
I think that is more of a byproduct than an intentional feature

Bloody hell @MarcGravell and @balpha really made sure mods are safe

Can't gag them?
Well, you are going to have 2-3 brand new mods breaking this stuff everytime a new SE site comes out
you have to make it work flawlessly

Agreed

Otherwise you are going to have the same people breaking stuff every 2-3 weeks

7:26 PM
It was actually just one of those I needed to know moments.

ah
Just don't gag me. I'm a community jester and if I get gagged, the core of the earth begins to expand and eventually explodes

How does gagging work? Will I see that I'm gagged? Does it come with a timeout? Must I be manually "ungagged"?

You can read all about it in the History of Unicorns and Waffles written by an elder community member

I'm a bit afraid to ask what "History of Unicorns and Waffles" is, but I feel I must

Those things are imaginary, they have no history.

7:31 PM
Waffles are not imaginary
at least I hope not

@LasseVKarlsen It is an old scroll that reveals the magic of the Meta community. One part describes the tribes of community jesters who roam the land being a general nuisance
if silenced, the balance of earth is thrown off causing it to expand

@lassevkarlsen I (and likely many others) wish they were... then one could eat as many as one would like

@lassevkarlsen I can gag you and you can find out :P

I'm game :)

You asked for it

7:35 PM
you might want to remove it soon

So what happened @LasseVKarlsen

take it off..

@Chacha102 It's off

test
so am I gagged now?

you were..

7:35 PM
well, I have a question

You were gagged and ungagged already

now you aren't

You missed it

what is the point of the gag?

ok, gag him again..

7:36 PM
no, I didn't miss it, but answer my question and I'll tell you what happened and why I'm asking
or rather, not this gag, but a gag

The purpose of gag is to get rid of annoying users

ok
the reason I'm asking is that I got a message next to the message I tried to post "so am I gagged now?" asking me to retry
does it only work with 1 message?

no, multiple

No, you get gagged for a period of hours

or could I potentially queue up a whole batch of messages, all sitting on "retry now"?

7:38 PM
@Diago Can you gag me for a minute..

so if I was obnoxious, I could queue up a lot of new obnoxious messages, all sitting on "retry", and once I was unbanned, I could quickly click retry on each?

@LasseVKarlsen Only one every 3 secs

@Chacha102 ARe you asking me if it's possible or if I can?

considering the message said "for the next 59 minutes", I'm sure I could queue up a lot of them

@Diago Would you?

7:39 PM
k

Testing

@Chacha102 Done
And undone

Now ... will he be smart enough to ungag me?
Ok..
So, I guess you could queue a lot
but when you get unbanned, you still have to click each one individually
and 3 seconds apart

I would be offended
If I actually was smart :P

So i don't think it is really a big deal..
anyway, I'll talk to you all next week

7:51 PM
strewth - I go to a meeting, and 90 messages!
give a man a chance!
@diago no ;p
@lassevkarlsen In all seriousness, would you like me to gag you for, say, 3 minutes so you can see the experience? it isn't anything special...

has already been done
we tried it
seriously, haven't you learned by now how to deal with email after a vacation? :)
read everything before responding to anything

@lassevkarlsen if you reload the chat when gagged, you should get a more clear "no" ;p

meetings, vacations, tomatoes, tomatoes

@lassevkarlsen thank you for reminding me; we need better "remove everything from this user" controls. Although we do have bulk delete (selected manually)

Couldn't you just disable the send button while gagged?
(and everything it entails)

7:56 PM
you mean, a bit like this?
This room was placed in timeout for 30 seconds; the topic of this room is "read the faq chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq"; - conversation should be limited to that topic.
Timeout cleared

yeah, but only for the gagged user

I guess we could do something similar for user gags; it is fundamentally similar - but I think that is more of a rarity anyway.

yeah, probably, but no reason not to "do it right"

I always miss the timeouts :p

But the "delete everything for this user" is an important anti-crap measure

7:57 PM
of course, first you gotta define what "right" means :)

we must do that
@lassevkarlsen is there a missing "not" in there?

luckliy, our mass-deleter has shift-click selection, so getting rid of a block of contiguous crap is effortless. Distributed crap is harder to dispose of.
And no, that isn't a dig at azure.

Just allow moderators to write SQL in their chat box, that'll give them all the power they need

@marcgravell Such a statement take out of context...! would still make sense

8:02 PM
@devinb - or maybe "just as much sense"... which has more possible interpretations ;p

Yes, make my message say that :p

8:33 PM
1600 == ~2
nope
1600 == 4

9:20 PM
@JoshK what does that mean?

testing the built-in expression evaluator?

9:36 PM
@Shog9 it's the normal link, just broswer from a mobile device (it at least work from an iPhone)

hmm...
FEATURE REQUEST: recognize Palm Pre browser as mobile device

9:55 PM
the world doesn't recognize the Palm Pre as a mobile device, so why should we? :)

@jeffatwood +1 BURN

10:15 PM
@jeffatwood ha! Well, rather expected as much... See discussion with devinb regarding iPod monopoly... ;-)

1 hour later…
11:34 PM
mostly there's no way for us to test on it
we bought @MarcGravell and @balpha 32 GB iPod Touches so at least they can test on that
