Apparently, the onebox support for questions has some issues if a URL is in the title. It seems to create a link out of the URL, causing problems with the link to the question itself.

@georgemarian now you just have to find that special link that'll trigger a onebox with a URL in the title that triggers a onebox with a URL in the title that triggers a onebox with a URL in the title...

Q: Is http://www.dyndnscommunity.com/ part of the SO community?

NinjaCatTheir site looks like a copy of SO, but when I signed up for an account, there's no way to associate my SO ID with their site.

The "Is " links to the question.

heh
RegEx FTW!

Now, I wonder what would happen if the URL was at the start of the question.

Will a chat room with no activity for a while be deleted automatically?
I ask because I think the chat facilitates those "best/worst x you've ever seen" questions which are off-topic in the parent site pretty well, what with the starred responses and the whole chat history being loaded when you enter the room.
and speaking of that, maybe discussion questions on the parent site could be "migrated to chat" in a way. And possibly a "view replies" link/button could appear beneath messages with replies, similar to "show comments," which would list the replies and link to them in the chat history. But maybe I'm off my rocker.

3:12 AM
@carsonmyers I believe that will be the case.

@CarsonMyers - that is something we were discussing internally yesterday; at the moment, rooms with no or very little activity may be prime for deleting. Inactive rooms with content are more likely to become frozen, with the option of thawing them if needed.
Hey Sam

howdy
I enjoyed your new freeze room countdown animation :)
was a tad cropped off in IE when I was logged out

speaking of new stuff... Somehow, I got refreshed while I was away :-(
logged out of inactive rooms, lost click to reply, fixed CSS bugs... It's all terribly tragic.

@shog haha, join the crowd.
and those improvements sound nice. I'm glad to hear it. What about viewing replies to a specific message?

@CarsonMyers - we have the data for that - we just need to think about the UI experience...
@Shog9 - we'll reset you client if it has missed too many events for a delta to be sensible. Is it possible that you lost network connection for a while? That can cause automatic refresh.

probably - had to run across town, kinda hard to maintain wifi connection while driving ;-)

5:43 AM
(we also reset your client if someone did a +o / -o on you)

will have to remember that next time; coulda transitioned to a temporary cell connection (cue image of George Costanza maneuvering Frogger-on-battery across a busy street)

@shog9 Basically, that is a server-protection check; in case you come back from holiday and unsuspend/unhibernate your machine. We don't want it sucking everything.

well, it's definitely sucking

hey! cheek.

;-p

5:46 AM
I have lots of buttons here; don't... make... me... try... them... ;p

don prez the beeg red button
ah, well. At least I can hibernate my machine tonight without fear...

How did link to question happen?

sorry, which? Do you mean any question, or are you asking about the regex glitch discussed above?

Just how the message "Q: Is dyndnscommunity.com part of the SO community?" got into the chat feed

6:02 AM
you can post the link to any SE/SOFU question, answer or user. And a few other things.
So if I post http://stackoverflow.com/users/55690/justin-king by itself:

Thats fantastic!

A: What links and sites are handled specially in chat?

Juha SyrjäläThe current list of integrated (we call this onebox, or oneboxing, ala search engines) sites is: Stack Exchange Questions Stack Exchange Answers Stack Exchange Users Stack Exchange Chat Messages Stack Exchange Chat Rooms (though not really pretty yet) Amazon Twitter Wikipedia XKCD YouTube

@MarcGravell Did you see the report about the oneboxing being a little too intelligent and linking to URLs in question titles?

yes
looking at

Cool, just wanted to make sure that someone saw it. :)

6:09 AM
I starred it for tracking ;p

Ah, what a thought!

Annoyingly, it seems to happen at the client; the server gets it right:
Is http://www.dyndnscommunity.com/ part of the SO community?

lol really?

we have some magic linkification on the client. Looks like it isn't quite 100%

Yah, the http://www. doesn't show up.
@marcgravell Ah, that makes sense. Push it off to the client.

6:24 AM
@MarcGravell, have you thought about a merchandise-shop for the Stack Exchange sites? I'd sooo like to have a large coffee mug with the Stack Overflow logo on it
And if you printed my flair on it as well, I'd purchase them regularly

@lassevkarlsen Many static mugs < One dynamic mug
If you're going to go for a SE merch spot, might as well get mugs that connect to the Internet wirelessly and poll the site for the latest rep every, say, 30 seconds or so.

So the query would be java-based?

Now, that's gotta be oneboxed. ;)

6:31 AM
Plus one.

6:47 AM
8 messages moved to The Tavern (General)

@MarcGravell. On message moving - I think that for posterity (transcript) sake, the comment on the 'source' room should link not just to the target room, but also the position of the first post in the set. And the comment in the target room should specify that it's the preceding n messages that were moved.

@Benjol - well, it isn't necessarily the 8 preceding messages; time order is retained
We should do something to flag the imports, though.

@MarcGravell, hang on.. OK, you mean the imported messages could be mixed up with the native ones? hum, not so easy I guess...

maybe something in the space where the edit pencil appears. Or something like that.

I just realised that the delete "window of opportunity" is time-limited like the edit. Gulp! Gonna have to be even more careful about what I say :(

7:02 AM
@benjol Did you expect it to be different?

@GeorgeMarian, I don't know, I thought that I'd seen that it was different. And it's that way on SO - you can delete comments any time.

Hmm...no sound notification when mentioned in another room? (in Chrome that is, i think it worked just fine in Firefox)
@benjol Ah, fair enough. Didn't think about comments on the sites.

@georgemarian I got a beep, but I have both rooms open in separate tabs
@georgemarian Neither did I, until you asked and made me think about it :)

@benjol Hmm...sounds not working for me in chrome, apparently.

@GeorgeMarian, not at all ? Which setting have you got, and how many tabs/rooms are you in?

7:13 AM
Yup, not at all. (It was working earlier.) It's on 'when mentioned.'
Say something, I just switched it to visible room.
Oh, and I only have 2 rooms, each in a tab and I had one other tab open for another site.

Hello
@GeorgeMarian, re-hello

hmm...yah, nothing
(And, yes. My sound is on.)

Got your speakers turned on? :)

lol
Yah, I just checked that.
hmm...brb i guess

Well, I've starred you post for 'attention'

7:19 AM
Ok, say something somewhere. I just restarted chrome.

(Sorry, I'm on "beep when mentioned", didn't see/hear you)

No worries, I should've directed that at you. :)
So, yah...apparently it seems borked for me for some reason.
A hard refresh didn't seem to fix it, nor did a restart of chrome. I even muted Family Guy, in case I just wasn't noticing it. :)
I guess I'll futz with tomorrow. I need some shut eye.

7:35 AM
@GeorgeMarian, nighty night

8:17 AM
@Richard thanks for the Faq / IRC suggestion
soo tired of talking about that. Truly FAQ material

8:44 AM
@Jeff: np, Q will still get asked, but avoids repeating the full answer

short version: IRC sucks, kthxbye

RTFFAQ :)

New stats per room:
typical posting times (for this room)

What dose the yellow mean?

Ah, clever, answers my question then :)

So x axis is UTC?

yes; it has more explanation in the real home...

12:58 PM
On a related subject, is it possible to get to the room information pages without joining the room first?

Not yet, but that would make sense

@Richard, you can cobble the link together (chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/info/131)

@Benjol of course... maybe time for a little GreaseMonkey on chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms

@Richard, at the rate Marc and balpha are going, there's a chance they'll get there before you do :)

@balpha a link or two on chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms would be useful... especially to get more details (e.g. if there likely to be anyone else in the room now).
@Benjol yes

1:14 PM
working on that right now

How the heck do you guys coordinate who's writing to which file?

most of the time we tell each other "I'm working on such-and-such right now"
we have our own private chat room, you know

How would I know? it's private.

but it shouldn't be a surprise to you that we do communicate, right? :)

A: Use cases for chat

Jeff AtwoodWell, some things I am using it for now: In the Server Fault and Super User rooms, I posted the output of a recent monthly task to cull unused tags into the respective SU and SF rooms: http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/100/super-user http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/32/server-fa...

you have no right to tell me what I can be surprised about.
And no, it doesn't. I was actually more or less curious about the manner of the file breakdown, because it seems like the features you are editing and adding are so closely related that it would be nearly impossible to keep to separate files.

1:20 PM
well, the magic of mercurial has a big part in it
but most of the time, it's just "avoid working on the same stuff at once"

@balpha, my fingers are hovering over Ctrl-F5, tell me when ;)

1:36 PM
go ahead

@balpha nice

1:54 PM
@balpha very useful. thanks

2:28 PM
@marcgravell The other graphs on the stats tab have legends ("messages", "users"), perhaps the posting times graph could have a "now" legend.

2:43 PM
@denniswilliamson good idea; done

@balpha Nice (and quick). The other thing I noticed is the other graphs are going to climb the stairway to heaven, so to speak. Has any though been given to changing those to show a rate instead of an always-increasing absolute number? eg. "messages/day"

now if you could just tell the google charts api to show the derivative
I was joking -- but knowing google, that could actually be possible

3:12 PM
@balpha You can probably fake that by just graphing Δy.

Q: Last message on room popup hides switch room link.

C. RossIn the current version of chat, the last message feature on the room popup hides switch room link. This is frustrating b/c I have to go out of the room to get to my other room, instead of simply switching.
