@marc When/why did the 'click msg to reply' feature get turned off?

@Benjol Thanks :)
It makes sense if they have other functionality planned for that action.

@devinb - Jeff veto ;p
on the grounds that you can do it easily enough via the click, and as it happens we do have other uses for click - moderation. So I can now shift selected messages between rooms.
This also partly meets a meta suggestion for selecting multiple non-contiguous messages, so we can possibly re-use some things there.

@Marc I think it's a little... troubling.. that we'd remove a feature designed for use by everyone in favour of a feature that can only be used by,.... one per room?
No... even less.
Anyway, I agree that there could be better things done with that action.

There is no "in favour" here; we could toggle the mode. Simply; that is not perceived as the desired approach for replies.

12:33 PM
But according to those... usability principles outlined in that book I can't recall.

@MarcGravell, I like your use of the passive voice there :)

The fact is that "reply" now uses A) two clicks, one to the reasonably size bar on the left, and then a move and another clikc.

OK, I haven't been following "english.stackexchange.com", so I'll take your word for it ;p

or, a single click on a very small button.

@devinb - what about the overlay?

12:34 PM
@marcgravell "that is not perceived as the desired approach"

ah
two seconds; testing something... @Benjol - apols, but your client may reload...
and back again...
ooh, shiny

What changed?

@MarcGravell, it did, twice :) Once in flashed, then it did a really really ("do you want to navigate away...")

We have a new, simpler way to make people room-owners
I tested that. And took it back again ;p

Wow, I was invested with magic powers, but didn't even have time to do anything about it! ...

12:37 PM
also - any chance that one/both of you could do a hard-F5?

done

This room was placed in timeout for 1 minute; the topic of this room is "read the faq chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/faq"; - conversation should be limited to that topic.
Jeff wanted Jack Bauer...
don't blame me...
I just work here ;p
Timeout cleared

tacky
sorry

Timeout counts by 2
bizarre.

12:39 PM
and you're missing some intermediate font sizes, I think

@devinb - it picks it up from the server during poll.

@devinb, it's the time it takes for the animation I guess :)

Yeah, I figured, it's just funny.

anyway; I'm sure Jeff'll clarify his intentions when he sees the... er... thing that it is currently ;p

@MarcGravell, I guess it does have the advantage of getting your attention

12:44 PM
;p

But a disadvantage is that it'll draw your attention away from whatever the moderator is trying to say

ttfn people

3:12 PM
@balpha: is the gutter arrow supposed to be present on every message now?

it has always been

gutter arrow?

@balpha: I mean permanently present, not just on hover?

oh -- no, that shouldn't be
tried a hard refresh? old css or so?

yeah that fixed it. Must have been stale CSS in the cache.

2 hours later…
5:10 PM
Mobile version of the chat is cool, but i think it could better with thé typping bar ans menu on the bottom
May be this could an option

there's a mobile version?
when'd that happen?

Yes
I don't know, i just tried that right now

link?

Please fix the search so it works. Example: From 'The Tavern', Hit 'Search Transcript', type 'Cletus' in word box, leave other box blank, hit button, see Kitten

Obviously, search thinks cletus's true nature is that of a cute fluffy pet. I concur!

5:28 PM
@balpha the "load older messages" "show all" etc bar

@litb that bar is supposed to be up there

but it scrolls away -.-

what do you mean by "scrolls away"? I don't understand

the bar isn'T visible always

@MarcGravell Get your links right... GOSH!!! (The message when a mod moves messages links to chat.stackoverflow not chat.meta.stackoverflow)

5:33 PM
@litb why should it be visible always?

i've no idea
lol

@litb It should only be visible when your scroll up enough that there aren't any more messages

anyway im gone. have fun!

@balpha I'm going to pretend that never happened..

Why does the "other rooms you're in" use a different color convention than the regular red, green, black there is in chat rooms? I think it should be made coherent.

5:39 PM
I like the green better
It makes it stand out
Because the talk is always more interesting in another room

+1 @Chacha102

I don't get it

@stefanoborini right now, "other rooms" shows George Marian talking about his cat. Therefore, I'll jump over expecting amusing LOLCat pictures. And be disappointed.

@shog9 He referenced his waistband -- may I never hear about it again -- in the same comment. Are you sure you want pictures?

@populardemand only if they have cute kittens / cletuses and amusing captions

5:54 PM
I think that whatever indicator is used for the reply notification should always let you scroll through replies.

@shog9 As a wise woman once said, "Ack! Hoisted by my own petard!"

Seriously though, as long as I'm here, I should report the odd behavior in The Tavern about an hour ago:
in The Tavern (General), 54 mins ago, by Popular Demand
Did anyone else's starred-messages list just lose its formatting?

@pop probably by design -- I changed some stuff in that list, including the css -- so you probably had new data, but old css

mine still is... But then, I haven't refreshed in like three days now, so gotta figure the remote-generated HTML and local CSS is getting a bit out of sync

6:01 PM
wait
are you serious?

FEATURE REQUEST: make pasting an image work (auto-upload to the new SO service or something)

you have the same page open for three days?

@balpha There are certain questions that aren't meant to be asked.

@balpha Yup, since before
Aug 13 at 6:04, by Jeff Atwood
I veto this "click anywhere on a message to insert reply" behavior
(don't want to lose click-to-reply 'til i've had a chance to greasemonkey this baby)

Is there a keyboard-only way to reply to a given message? Or is clicking the little arrow the only way?

6:04 PM
@michaelmrozek I've wanted to request this since the moment they implemented the little arrows. But how would you design it?
I did mention a few days ago -- I think -- about providing a unique ID with every message, but man, talk about a solution that's worse than the problem.

@populardemand arrow-up to select a message, type to respond...

@michaelmrozek You'd need to know the post number.

@Popular There is a unique ID with every message, it just isn't displayed

@michaelmrozek I know, my point is that displaying it would be UGGGGGly.
@shog9 How would you handle "edit my own earlier post," then? Continue using up-arrow for both?

@populardemand yup
first up-arrow edits, next up-arrow replies to last message, next up-arrow replies previous, so on... (skipping your own messages, of course)

6:07 PM
In theory up would go to the most recent post; if it's yours it shows in the text field as an edit operation, if it's someone elses it shows as the beginning of a reply, and you can keep hitting up to go to other messages

@shog9 I thought about that before and I can't remember why I disliked it. I'd just have it go up one message per keypress, though; maybe somehow highlight the one you're on. If it's your own, it'll allow edit; if not, it'll be a reply.

It could highlight just like editing does now

I'm thinking about it in terms of common use: normally, you're responding to a message that was just left. Slap the arrow and it fills in the post #, now take your time to respond
@populardemand yeah, that might work. Would also provide kb support for editing more than just the last reply that way...

That's a good point, it's not like you're going to be hitting up 30 times; it's going to be one or two times generally

@michaelmrozek test

6:12 PM
Test successful?

kinda
mh
again test
so every message has an ID associated, but it's not local to the room... or is it ?
it is global

no, that's global

check the permalink
won't this skyrocket very soon ?

@stefanoborini It's just a number.

Global, but with no cross-room replies:
in The Tavern (General), 35 secs ago, by Popular Demand
:91779 It's global (test).

6:17 PM
ok

How are the starred messages on the right-hand side ordered?
Seems kinda random to me.

@populardemand Yah, pretty much.

Ooo, when did the "rejoin all" button show up on the favorites tab? I'm a fan

i'll be back
(said with austrian accent, clearly)

BTW, the star formatting, in the list, is hosed again on my end. But only in this room.

6:20 PM
Hm, whenever I click my bouncy icon to calm it down, my username gets highlighted in yellow. But it's always the first mention of me on the visible portion of the page, never the mention that caused the bouncing in the first place.
@GeorgeMarian no-repro on my end

@george we had a css change recently

[ignore this post, I need to check server config]

you probably have old css, but new data

@balpha This occurred last night as well, and it wasn't just for me.
I have a feeling it has something to with my starring a message.

this happens to everyone

6:22 PM
There is a glitch there...
if you cancel the bouncing via posting or [esc], it still keeps the cached handler in the "click"

when the server gives you new-html for that list, but you still have the old css (because the page isn't reloaded), it just has to look weird

I blame @balpha ;p

eh, Marc, whaddaya think of this?
13 mins ago, by Popular Demand
@shog9 I thought about that before and I can't remember why I disliked it. I'd just have it go up one message per keypress, though; maybe somehow highlight the one you're on. If it's your own, it'll allow edit; if not, it'll be a reply.

@marcgravell yeah, that bug is in the list already
it's @marc 's fault

Ok, either I can read right, or I don't understand where to look. What is the quickest way to switch rooms if not running multiple tabs?

6:23 PM
@diago open multiple tabs, then Ctrl+Tab

click the room, click "switch to that room"

@balpha So, this change was recent? Why don't I see the same issue in another chat room?

@Shog9 Exactly what I am trying to avoid
@balpha I had hoped for a one click switch :( But that works too

@diago don't fight it, just give in and try to enjoy it...

@diago it was a one click switch until recently

6:24 PM
@Shog9 I know. But with 20+ tabs open it gets dodgy.

Jeff wanted a menu on click

@diago so open a new window...
@balpha jeff hates usability!

@balpha Darn it
Sometimes that man....... whistles

/me is wishing "catch up" was working so I could... catch up.

@Shog9 You win :( Again.

6:26 PM
@MichaelMrozek - "rejoin all" is from a few days ago. Saturday, I think.

@marcgravell there's a proposal for activity histograms, and a proposal for keyboard-based replies. And a lot of noise. There! Caught up!

catchup should work in a sec

yes, I saw the histograms.

@Marc Really? I completely missed it today when I connected

works now

6:27 PM
actually, Jeff wanted something similar to plot room activity; except... he seems to want html tables. I have no idea why.

also fixed: search and recent

@marcgravell kickin' it old skool

He's probably trying to keep things simple?

@chacha102 fixed

can't get much simpler than a Google Charts chart... Big URL, small download, no server load...

6:29 PM
yes, that is what I already use for daily stats
so hourly stats shouldn't be much different - except no accumulator

(and, hopefully, a meaningful X-axis label)

meh; this is meta - it has no meaning

@balpha Hurray...I can search for celtus. ;)

celtus: Irish KITTEH!

I just tried to TAB-autocomplete someone's username in a reply on MSO. This is going to be annoying.

6:34 PM
@PopularDemand You and me both

@PopularDemand - indeed; I always try to submit comments with [ret], then wonder why it didn't go anywhere.

@MarcGravell WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME!?!?!?!

you were griping; I am the anti-gripe

Nice
I just saw the relocate feature

1 hour ago, by Chacha102
@MarcGravell Get your links right... GOSH!!! (The message when a mod moves messages links to chat.stackoverflow not chat.meta.stackoverflow)

6:44 PM
It isn't only for Mods though
Room Owner's too

hmmm... is it?

I have the menu...

I might need to check that the server agrees with the client ;p
It makes sense to be owner, though
hmmm... [ModeratorOnly]; strike that for now...

?
test message to feedback
Ok, I can do everything except actually move it
I get all the popups, the selects, just not the actual movement

do you get the "relocate" button?

6:47 PM
Yes

bug ;p
either it shouldn't be there, or it should work

Once I enter the number for the chat room, it seems like it would work, but it doesn't

yes; currently that route is marked mod-only. I'll have a look at that. The underlying problem is: what access do you need in the other (target) room? read-write? owner?
perhaps read-write is enough

I would think Read-write
Owner would make it almost unusable except for mods
Read-write makes sense because you are allowed to post messages in another room

yes, but you're essentially acting as a message proxy ;p
(or could be, if abused)

6:50 PM
Maybe put a rep parameter on it?
5k reputation?

I'll think about it. Making read-write for now.
do you see "delete"?

Just putting the concept out there: You are a message proxy when you migrate stuff on SO, and that requires X amount of rep.
sec
no

'cos I don't think we can let arbitrary users delete other peoples posts ;(

only relocate and cancel

good ;p
OK; you've sold me on migrate ;p

6:52 PM
I agree with that

I see..... :P
Some interesting buttons I should take time to try :) @MarcGravell

Although, Migrate takes multiple users
But I think a rep limit above the create channel rep would be a good idea

give it a minute and that'll work... however, I'm going to add a message from the owner to the target room as well.
So no hiding behind obscurity...

That will apply to mods too right?
Cause that sounds like something that should be in there anyway
Tell me when its all ready and I'll move something in here

probably there now
oops! bug
don't click that button...

6:58 PM
too late!!!

hehe the second message gets sent to the wrong room ;0

I saw that

meh, what's a "from" and a "to" between friends...

Could you somehow make it obvious that a message was imported?
