Why do printers not have white ink?
They have sensors to detect watermarks in paper already... they can detect that you loaded colored paper and print white onto it.

@DanGrossman Because erm... the paper, at least the ones which people typically use, are white

BECAUSE we have no white ink! :)

Given that ink is about as expensive as liquid gold, I'm not sure many people would want to buy another cartridge just for colored paper

ANYONE THERE?

@TylerChacha NO

6:19 AM
Where?

Triton now has compact mode
3 hours ago, by Tyler Chacha
Triton: http://102content.com/triton - Dev: http://102content.com/triton/dev/
Open documents, click compact, and click refresh

What is the relationship between Triton and SO?

There really isn't one

oh
I thought there was a reason it was pinned to this chat

Hey, anyone wants a chat bot for this room?

6:20 AM
neat app

hehe Currently at: undefined of undefined

@GeorgeMarian If all fails, refresh :)

That is the annoying thing .. it is really hard for me to test how to handle your situation because my download went off without a hitch

Fuck. The Great Firewall's started blocking the BBC again

6:22 AM
@YiJiang You're behind TGF I'm guessing

@TylerChacha That appeared initially, while it was downloading. (In both versions)

Firefox?

Yup
Minefield

@TylerChacha GFW is the common abbreviation. And yes

ah .. maybe that is a Chrome specific variable..

6:23 AM
On a side-note, I just lost all the notes I had in there.

@DanGrossman It's really hard to make white ink work due to the coverage necessary to produce actual white over top of another background colour, I think, which makes it impractical for general consumer purposes.

Ya know, while Anonymous is great and all supporting Wikileaks, why can't they turn their collective Ion Cannons on the Chinese government for a while?

@TylerChacha Yah, that was my reaction. The side bar with the list of threads when blank. I thought it was just a UI issue.

@YiJiang Lost cause

6:24 AM
I didn't change anything on the data side..

@DanGrossman Probably, ~sigh...

Minefield?

@TimStone I was thinking of all the chromium(?) or lead that would require...

4.0?

@TylerChacha Yah, 4.0b8pre

6:25 AM
@TylerChacha Minefield's the codename for the latest nightly I think

It could certainly be a data corruption type of thing.

I didn't change any the data fields or anything..
hmm

I might have lost mine too, but I can't remember if I had anything in there to begin with. :P

Grrr... and it is harder to see inside FF than Chrome
If FF decides to wipe the localStorage everytime, that is gonna be a huge problem

All my blank documents didn't go away

6:27 AM
although I still have data there..

There they went again. I was just clicking through the list of threads.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, and calcium carbonate is usually used for the purposes of white pigment, but I don't know how well it works at the precision levels necessary for printing.

@GeorgeMarian They just got wiped again as you moved through a list of threads?

My RTFM mug came w/ a warning about lead and chromium. lol

that is really weird..

6:30 AM
@TylerChacha Yup, in compact view (FWIW).

wait .. got it
lets see

@GeorgeMarian Hahah

hmm
Looks like maybe the ThreadIndex got corrupted
because I can still see the actual thread

@TimStone Needless to say, I don't plan on scraping paint chips off my mug.

but nothing is on the list

6:32 AM
(fumes. Goes off to create a virus exploiting XP, IE6 and other outdated software the general Chinese population still uses, then collectively DDoS the GFW to bring it down)

:politely asks anon to pause attacks for a moment so he can refund a PayPal payment:

@YiJiang You might want to wait until you're out of the country.
@GeorgeMarian Yeah, I've got a Teflon pan that's starting to peel, need to take care of that..

@TimStone True. But I've got plenty of free time now, so...

@TylerChacha Right now, I have one thread showing in the main window, but it's not in the list.

@YiJiang You hope nobody's reading your Google-indexable plans to attack the government of the country you're in

6:34 AM
Why wont Firefox be nice and let me see INSIDE the localStorage..

@DanGrossman Patriotic Chinese uses Baidu, not Google. Shhhhh...
@TylerChacha Eh? Just type window.localStorage into the console

@TimStone This one time, my a aunt of gf freaked out cause my gf was heating up oil to cook in a teflon pan and it started burning slightly. We all joke about the incident and cries of dieing canaries.

@YiJiang Chrome has a nice browsing interface so I can see all of the keys/values stored in localStorage
@YiJiang I don't see anything like that in Firefox

Check the DOM tab.

@TylerChacha There's no specific interface in Firebug, but you can still grab the localStorage object, so it's no biggie

6:36 AM
DOM tab?

Firebug?

Firebug no worky in Firefox 4

@TylerChacha Use the alpha

@YiJiang Is there something like localStorage.getAll()?

TypeError: localStorage.getAll is not a function
chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/89/the-tavern-general
Line 0
Eh... no

6:38 AM

I know I can access localStorage, the problem is my data is randomly getting wiped and I'm trying to figure out what the pattern is

@DanGrossman Hahah

@DanGrossman Does that happen all the time?

Just happened again, something about that site causes it to spin and crash a few seconds after loading

@TylerChacha localStorage.clear calls? I'm not sure what else will wipe the localStorage space

6:39 AM
@YiJiang No I don't use localStorage.clear
The weird part is it seems only my thread_index key is becoming undefined

@DanGrossman Is that the firebug website choking firebug?

It's the Firebug website choking Chrome 8

@YiJiang Hahahahah, so all of your formatted text has been showing up a bit weird lately, and I thought it was all your fault...but it was that userstyle I wrote the other day after you felt it necessary to post that long text. :P

@TimStone \o/

6:41 AM
and Firebug is ticking me off by saying "7 items in the localStorage" but when I click the link, I can't find out what they all..

@DanGrossman Same for Chromium 8. I see a message about "Waiting for feeds.delicious.com"

The latest release of Firebug angers me even more than the last one did, heh.

@TimStone I thought that's not possible, heh

It was like they had a developer meeting and said "You know all the stuff that works semi-decently? Let's break that, and not fix anything else."

(waits for @TimStone to blow, then watch the fireworks from a safe distance)

@YiJiang They removed the ability to see the formatted JavaScript methods when you hover over properties in the DOM tab..Now it just tells you what file it's in, which is useless since the file is minified.
And, they added a checkbox to the "Open Firebug in New Window" menu option.

@TimStone Awww... dammit, it was one of Firebug's more useful features

Nothing about the Mozilla files says anything about this... it might just have something to do with saving too often

Only, that menu option is still responsible for opening Firebug in a new window, and if you try the normal "Open Firebug" option when that one is checked, it doesn't open it in a new window, so I have no idea what the hell that check mark is doing there.

6:46 AM
@GeorgeMarian What were you doing, just moving between different docs?

fumes and shakes head

@TimStone There's still the downgrade option

True..

@TylerChacha The last time, yes. I don't recall quite what I was doing the first time. I think I was clicking on the buttons.

Grr... and now it isn't recreating the error...

Q: ROR + Name of website "www.xxx.com" in Address Bar

Rahul PatilWrite a code to show the name of website "www.abcd.com" in address bar and also a sample code for ROR. Thanks !!!

And when was the first time this happened? Today?

I wasn't able to reproduce it, but..

@DanGrossman GIVE ME CODES, PLEZ!!!1one

@DanGrossman Not even going to bother downvoting...

@TylerChacha A few minutes before that. Just since you brought it up recently.

6:49 AM
ok, so something more recent has triggered it
it could be browser based (the whole updating thing), or it could be something else I introduced..
Which is odd because all I've done in the past few days is changed CSS and renamed some files

What about compact mode?

@DanGrossman Voted to close, meh.

Compact mode does touch the localStorage..
although it doesn't touch any of the stuff that deals with threads..
FOUND IT!!!
Man .. you were clicking REALLY fast..

more likely, the app is very slow to respond

6:53 AM
This last time, sure. I was trying to break it. :)

Zing!

I guess years of gaming have paid off, afterall.

I can click buttons many times faster than it's reflected on screen for whatever reason

> Now is it fine ?? thnx for replying. – Rahul Patil ↵ 3 mins ago
...He didn't change anything.

Yeah, I had no idea what changed

6:54 AM
Oh wait, he did.
The words got shuffled around.

So, here is a little insight to it
var thread = encoder.restore(current.id);
            if(thread == false){
                obj.deleteIndex(current.id);
                continue;
            }

He added "please"

basically, I've put into the code the ability to see a bad data and get rid of it..

@DanGrossman Well, that makes everything alright then!

Instead of "for ROR" it's not "with the help of ROR"

6:54 AM
somehow it wrongly returned false, and removed the entire index

@TylerChacha LOL, Talk about d'oh.

Tell me if it breaks again (Issues tab on github.com/chacha/Triton). If you can, open up the Web console (Ctrl+Shift+K) and give me the error messages

@TimStone *pops some popcorn8
This could get entertaining.

Hahah
Who needs TV, right?

Is there strike-through in markdown?
@TimStone Precisely!

6:57 AM
Anyway, I'm off to bed

SO/SE is so full of drama and entertaining idiocy.

@GeorgeMarian There's a feature request for strike-through in the Markdown

@GeorgeMarian <del>, but that's not markdown, and MiniMarkdown won't process HTML

@TylerChacha g'night

Tomorrow I will go through and make sure there is only one way to delete anything and that is through the Delete button on the menu
peace

7:00 AM
Gah! How'd I end up with so many open windows?

2AM. Sarah Palin's Alaska is now on TV.

@DanGrossman Yay?

@DanGrossman Erm... ewww...

I guess it should rate high in the entertaining idiocy category.

No! No TEST OF THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM during my show!
:grumbles:
"This test was ordered at 3:05AM"... ehrm.. it's 2:05AM. Someone's clock doesn't support DST!

7:07 AM
heh
That's odd. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Ugh. my TV just went off again. Another test.
Now it says 2:07 AM. They fixed it!

Did they correct the time?
LOL

I guess the first test failed.

Well, there was a failure.

flash camera fail

7:09 AM
So.....does this mean you get to watch your show?

With a few interruptions, yes.

Good for you! Don't know why, but my TV is being wacky too.

The way Comcast does emergency alerts is a little strange. It forcably changes the channel on the tuner, shows the alert on that channel, then changes the channel back to what you were watching.
When it's switching I can see whatever show was on the other channel first

Awww, you guys NARQ'd my entertainment. :P

@Dan: What's the point of these strange alerts again?

7:11 AM
@GeorgeMarian Hahah, I know, I'm such a meanie.

To ensure the intern that runs the system knows how to use it when there is an actual emergency to broadcast.
Mark Zuckerburg agrees to give away fortune: online.wsj.com/article/…

@John They're meant to tell us when we're supposed to be hugging our knees under a desk.

Assuming his fortune materializes some day, I assume.

@GeorgeMarian Duck and cover!

Well it sounds good enough...in theory...
BTW, Thanks @Tim

7:13 AM
No problem. :)

So, is this $12 Economist subscription legit? At that price, my "there's no such thing as a free lunch" buzzer is going crazy.

Yeah, it's legit, or the thread it was shared in April would have the horror stories by now.

Good point.

There are cheap magazine subs all the time... you can get Entrepreneur for $1/year if you're interested
economistsubscriptions.com has the same registrant as economist.com

Right, but what are the tradeoffs? I got cheap/free subs through BizRate once. I'm not doing that again.

7:18 AM
It's direct from The Economist, you're not giving anything up. Mags make money by circulation, not subscription fees.

@DanGrossman Ok, that's good.

Would definitely subscribe, but doesn't appear to be available for any country other than the US

Ah, right the advertising in the mag.

@YiJiang The country dropdown is the very top of the page

@DanGrossman The deal disappears when you choose another country

7:19 AM
:/

And yes, US$12 seems like an insane deal, given that that would make it as cheap as a newspaper per issue

other magazines practically give away their subscriptions
it works in the US where postage is less than a dollar per issue, and the money for printing comes from advertising
you can tell this is going into some old fashioned subscription management system, though, since they don't ask for a CVV2 number and don't authorize your credit card immediately...
it's like writing your credit card # on one of those subscription postcards and mailing it

Oh, dang it
Forgot to crop.

what are you pointing out?

Why is it that people never actually "leave" the room and instead just go dormant?

7:24 AM

@John That's just @RebeccaChernoff

Pop-up blocker fail.

But that's only because she's a bot I created

@John Why click "leave" when you can just close the window or leave it in the background

@DanGrossman Chat kicks you out after ten minutes of no ajax request I think

7:25 AM
@YiJiang Yep
Specifically polling for events, apparently.

So why are there still 15 people here?

@John I only leave when I have to reboot in to Windows, or something crashes and it takes me longer than 10 mins to get back. :)
3

@John All of their computers still have this tab open. Except @RebeccaChernoff, the reason of which I mentioned just now

@John They've left their browser windows open.

Why???

7:26 AM
Why not???

Cause that's what computer geeks do. I rarely shut down my computer.

Actually, the only person who I observed this happening with is @RebeccaChernoff, but like I said, she's a bot

@GeorgeMarian: Isn't that somewhat bad for it?

I've seen every other person actually leave the room (the animation makes it obvious)

7:27 AM
@YiJiang I very rarely leave, although it has happened once or twice.

@John Why would that be? It's not a car. Actually, power cycling too often can also cause issues.

It is better to leave your computer always on

@DanGrossman err, was that first one a screenshot of a PNC account? :P

yes, wrong screenshot

@GeorgeMarian: I don't know. I was just always told that letting it reboot daily was better.

7:29 AM
Anyway, does anyone here want another bot? The oy! s and backward smilies are obvious signs that she's gained sentience and have been causing quite a bit of problem here

@John I have not rebooted one of my web servers in years

@John Well, there are reasons to reboot... cough windows cough...

Jack Black...in Gulliver's Travels?

@DanGrossman Servers are an entirely different story, ya know

@GeorgeMarian: Most of my machines run windows so that might be the reason for my reboot policy.

7:30 AM

@DanGrossman Pretty good record, hehe...

@Dan:Wow.... now is that windows or linux?

That's am Amazon EC2 instance, too

@John No matter how hard I've tried, I have never been able to keep Windows running for long. Something always seems to screw up eventually, requiring a reboot.

@John Linux, it's bash, obviously

7:31 AM
It's been running nonstop at $0.34 an hour for almost 2 years

Meanwhile, in Linux, many times loging out and back in solves many issues.

@DanGrossman I take it you've found EC2 to run instances pretty reliably then?

@YiJiang: Right.....should've noticed that.......

Haven't lost an instance yet :knocks on wood:

@DanGrossman .34 * 24 * 365 * 2 = 5 956.8 - that's enough to buy you're own racks, yeah?

7:32 AM
shrug I'm not in the business of managing hardware, that's why I pay Amazon to do it for me

Ah, cool stuff. We're beginning to use EC2 more heavily, so that's good to hear.

another old one

@DanGrossman What's 'RightScale'?

A company that makes all their virtual machine images available for public use
I based that web server on one of their CentOS builds

'Cloud Computing Management Platform' - interesting

7:34 AM
saves me having to install the amazon tools on them and such just to get started customizing them

That reminds me, been meaning to check out Amazon's free cloud offering.

new accounts only :)

Right. Which is just fine for me. :)

I did apply for a free $25 credit for Amazon RDS... which covers less than a day of my test usage =p

lol
I sure can't wait 'till I get a 2nd monitor.

7:37 AM
both those monitors died shortly after the photo

That sucks. What brand?

@Dan:My monitor is exactly like that....

Samsung
@John 226CW and 226BW
both made with bad capacitors on the power board

Ideally, I'd like a 3x setup. I may just buy myself new one, buy the gf a new monitor, take her 19" for a 3rd. :)

I don't ever use the desktop anymore, but don't tell the IRS that

7:39 AM
22-inchers?

@Dan: I should clarify. My monitor looks like that from what I can tell. "226CW and 226BW" I'm not sure what that means...I didn't buy the monitor myself.

Those are the models
it says it on the top left of the bezel

@DanGrossman Snazzy.

@Dan: O gotcha. I have a 906bw. Is that good?

7:41 AM
It's 3 inches smaller and older

-_-
Well, mine still works! :D

I saw all the 1366x768 screens on laptops in stores and refused to buy one. Horrible. You can see the grid between the pixels! I went online and had to find a non-Mac with higher resolution on a 15" or smaller screen.

I have a 22-inch Asus monitor, which runs noticeably warmer than the gf's Viewsonic.

I wonder who makes Asus' panels

Got to go. Night y'all!

7:43 AM
g'night

night john
The dean examined a printout. "Doctor Fingal, the network admin saw you playing games, and scanned your network folder. So let's see." He adjusted his bifocals and read, "BlackJack.exe, Craps.exe and SlotMachine.exe are the very obvious ones. Oh- BubbleSort.exe- my kids play that one."

"Those aren't ga-"

"PowerLaw.exe- this is my piracy concern. Our pre-law program spent a large sum of money getting a valid license for that program."

That story must be made up because the person in it was using ZIP disks.

I used ZIP disks in my high school programming classes...

I still have some of my old ZIP disks laying around somewhere.

7:51 AM
Heh, I do too.

And, probably a drive, too.
That story kinda sucks. Why didn't he talk to the prof? I get it he probably didn't care, as he was leaving, but that's kinda thin.

What is it with Americans and Chinese food? I find it hard to believe that the "Chinese food" found in the West would actually taste Chinese to a native Chinese

@YiJiang It doesn't whatsoever, heh.
Or, at least I don't think so, but I suppose I don't meet your specific criteria :P

Why do people expect any food common in their country to be prepared like it is in another country?

Ironically, fortunes cookies are an American invention.

7:57 AM
For instance, this:
General Tso's chicken (sometimes General Tao's Chicken, General Tsao's Chicken, General Gao's Chicken, or General Gau's Chicken) is a sweet-and-spicy, deep-fried chicken dish that is popularly served in American Chinese and Canadian Chinese restaurants. The origins of the dish are unclear. The dish was previously largely unknown in China and other lands home to the Chinese diaspora. The association with General Tso, or Zuo Zongtang, a 19th century military leader, is unclear. The dish is atypical of Hunanese cuisine, which is traditionally very spicy and rarely sweet. Instead, the dish...

Aren't they called "American Fortune" cookies (or something like that) in the few places in China that serve them?

Ah, new blog post.

> The dish is not found in Changsha, the capital of Hunan. Nor is it found in Xiangyin, the home of General Tso.
I can confirm this, since I actually lived there for a while

@YiJiang But, it's still mighty tasty, to me anyway. :)
BTW, the same thing with the Mexican food served in restaurants here.

7:59 AM
@GeorgeMarian Sweet and spicy is not usually a combination found in Chinese dishes.
Sweet and Sour is, however

To satisfy the palate of the local population in a country, McDonald's offers a regionalized version of its menu. The result is McDonald's foods and meals not seen in other countries. Africa Egypt In summer of 2008 McDonald's introduced Fish Fingers with tartar dipping sauce as a side entrée. A Chicken Big Mac, which is the same as a standard Big Mac, though it is made with breaded chicken the same thickness as a Big Mac patty. In 2001, McDonald's introduced the McFalafel sandwich in Egypt. Another menu item is the Fish Mac, with two fish patties. Also introduced to the Cairo McDona...
McFalafel, classic American cuisine

Le Big Mac?

@DanGrossman Yeah, in China, KFC serves rice
