12:00 AM
Should've split it in multiple messages.

Oh, that's lame.

Java died a while ago, RIP

@TimStone VA highlands?

@DanGrossman Yeah, I gave up on Java a while ago. I'm just sanded that it's being borged by Oracle.

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, you could just ask your SO dev buddies ;)
@drachenstern Not quite. :)

12:01 AM
Not to mention concerned about the OSS Oracle has inherited.

@TimStone Like they'd tell me. Anyways, wouldn't need to. You created an account on WA right?

I'm sure MySQL will begin its decline some time in the next two years

@RebeccaChernoff Hahah, nice. I hadn't even considered that. And yeah :)

Safe for now, will live many more years, but something else will take its place now that Oracle holds it

So like I said, I could cheat, but meh.
@TimStone, are you a sports fan?

12:03 AM
I am.

@DanGrossman Let's not forget OpenOffice.

Well, mildly, I'm pretty bad about actually watching games on a regular basis.

football? baseball?

@GeorgeMarian Ugh, heh.
If we're talking popular American sports, football.

@TimStone too far north? Damn them Yankees eh? ;)

12:04 AM
I don't think OO had a chance either way... free office will be online apps like Google's, not OSS software
even offline will be in a browser

Football is about all I watch with any regularity.
@DanGrossman Unfortunately, trying to format a resume in Google's word processor sucks.

@TimStone Any particular feelings about the Redskins?

oh good reminder
I was thinking of replacing the resume on my personal site with a link to careers.SO

@RebeccaChernoff The rest of my family, being from VA, are all big Redskins fans. I like the Cowboys myself, on account of being Texan (by birth, but little else). :P

@GeorgeMarian if a pen and paper don't cut the trick then you're doing something wrong ;) ... no but seriously, I probably couldn't format my most recent resume in less than four hours
the sad part about my most recent resume is that it's a two column affair with a single line down the middle and mostly blank space to look nice
I got tired of having a huge wall-o-text on my resume, so I decided to make it two pages and just have it look nicer

12:07 AM
I hate working on resumes. Not only because of the formatting. Despite my huge ego, I don't like tooting my own horn.
3

careers.stackoverflow.com/dangrossman has only been viewed 6 times but I got a decent interview offer from it

@TimStone, if you watch the news on Sunday night, what team are they reporting on? ...Eagles?
lol

@DanGrossman Yeah, I need to get on that myself.

@GeorgeMarian Starred for being something I might say. :P

There's a lot of teams over eastward, heh.

12:08 AM
hehe

@RebeccaChernoff lol, I'm listening and remembering, not zerg-rushing him all at once ;)

@drachenstern She won't get that reference :P
@RebeccaChernoff I don't, because the news is terrible. ;)

can google >_<

Being a Jets fan WA sucks. I rarely get to see any of their games.

@TimStone Whether you watch it or not, I bet you know what team they're reporting on. q:

12:10 AM
How did you end up over in WA anyway?

Linking and unlinking accounts on careers.* seems broken
each time I refresh the page I see different results

@RebeccaChernoff I do, but thankfully the question wasn't phrased like that. ;)

@TimStone hrmph.

@TimStone I followed my former ex when I got layed-off. There wasn't much for me in Buffalo. While NYC may have been a better choice from the job search perspective, it wasn't such a good choice from blood-pressure perspective. :)
Man, that was quite the typo. lol

zerg rush

12:13 AM
@GeorgeMarian Hahah, that was quite the typo. But ah, makes sense. :)
@RebeccaChernoff Heheh ;)

lmfao

Ironically, I likely have mold allergies.

now I'm in the mood to play starcraft

Does this imply that you have mold?
@RebeccaChernoff It's an NFC East team, for the record. :P

12:15 AM
@DanGrossman Sigh, I still haven't bought SC2.

@GeorgeMarian same here
@DanGrossman I'm always in the mood to pretend to play starcraft ;)

@TimStone Mold is a constant in the PNW.
It doesn't get cold enough, often enough, nor long enough.

@GeorgeMarian Collectors Edition! I use my Jim Raynor Dog Tag USB drive all the time.

@DanGrossman Yah, I would've gone for the CE as well. Alas, I have budgetary constrains. At least, I'm building even more character. ;)

12:17 AM
@TimStone Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Redskins. I'll pick the Eagles.

I would have redacted my whiteboard for @AidenBell, but it unfortunately has nothing on it right now.

@RebeccaChernoff Not a bad guess.

I'm proud of myself for not buying WoW:Cataclysm CE. I don't play Warcraft anymore, but I was mighty tempted to buy it just because I have all the other collectors editions.

@TimStone right guess? (;

12:19 AM
ok, time to go meet the family for dinner. Talk to you guys later

cya @drachenstern

@DanGrossman I only have the original CE. My gf is basically the reason I have the other expansions and why I've reactivated my account. That said, I haven't played in weeks.

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah. I'm admitting to this one "freely" on the basis that you already had the ability to know I live within 50-100 miles of Philadelphia based on something I posted in chat before. ;)
@GeorgeMarian I'm not sure how to interpret that last part. :P
...By which I mean the middle.

@TimStone Eh? I got back together with my ex, for better or for worse... ;)

@drachenstern Enjoy

12:23 AM
Yay! Clapton's coming to Seattle.

@GeorgeMarian I'm not sure if the gf was a positive or negative motivation that caused you to play games :P

Three different women have dragged me back into WoW the past few years, but I keep getting myself back out.

@TimStone Oh, well I missed whatever you said then haha

@RebeccaChernoff It was kind of subliminal, it was mentioned on the connection speed test results. :P

@TimStone Ah. Yes, I'm on the fence about that one myself. I tried to get her involved in Eve-Online, but she didn't care for it.

12:25 AM
Ah, heheh.

She plays it mostly for the social aspects. Ironically, because of the guild that I got her into.

Why does the city smell like pork rinds ffs?

Pork fat tanker truck crashed?

I mean, I like pork rinds as much as the next redneck but this is silly

Thanks, Cleveland.

12:34 AM
Ouch!

this is painful to watch
"Ax Men" on Discovery Channel... this guy has been shouting at people at the top of his lungs for a good 20 minutes

heh It'd be funny if he passed out from it.

12:53 AM
:turns the heater up a notch:

1:15 AM
Heh, now I'm cold. >_<

Also turn the heater up a notch?

heh
Hmm. Ah. Hi @JasonPunyon.
@TimStone, thoughts on appropriate interval for the keyboard shortcut combos?
1s? 2s?

Jin
looks like i have some tweaking to do!

tweaking?

Jin
regarding the Programmers.se design. good some feedback

1:24 AM
nice
I need to go on a tour - I haven't seen all the designs. ):

@Jin BTW, I personally like the header. Though, I guess the red/green color-blind may have issues with it. :)

Jin
green is always a risky one to use. i find people either like it or hate it
i guess when in doubt, go with blue!
for the programmers site, my goal is to have it look like a prettier version of SO, without using too much cliched "programmer elements." after all, SO doesn't have any of that.

@Jin Yup. I like that approach. Subtle cues are better, especially for a site that I visit often.

Jin
1:36 AM
@TylerChacha stop teasing....
or i may have to go back being a female nightelf shadowpriest...

Went to Blizzcon almost 2 months ago, these were suppose to be shipped the very first day of BlizzCon .. I just got them.

Jin
so 6-8weeks...

Now that I see WC3, TFT, WoW, BC, WLK, Cat, and SC2 sitting on the shelf together, I wonder how much I've given blizzard

@TylerChacha For some reason that made me think of the (Miller Lite?) commercial: "What's wrong with my dragons?" (or something to that effect)

Oh, and I bought Diablo II pack last week to play with friends

1:38 AM
The posters ARE epic tho..

The posters were only from Blizzcon or part of the CE's?

Is there some SE tool where you can run queries on the database or whatever?

howdy

1:44 AM
Are your odata ears ringing @waffles? (;

Jin
it look me a while to realize @waffles is Sam.
and it turned out he's really a waffle in real life when I met him.

lol

haha
It certainly looked like y'all had fun from the few pictures I saw. q:
Though I think @Jin just ate the whole time. (;

@RebeccaChernoff Im almost done migrating odata off azure ... its been a tough ride

"Tags" on odata.- means the total different tags, right?

1:47 AM
@waffles Hang in there!

I think @Jin and @Jarrod must have put on like 20 kilos during that trip

Jin
i gained 5lbs that week. that's a lot, for me

What are these kilos you speak of @waffles?

MS Azure ~= AWS S3?

@RebeccaChernoff think of them as kilo BYTES

1:48 AM
q:

MS Azure ~= Google App Engine ~= Heroku
AWS EC2 ~= Rack Space ~= Engine Yard

ah

AWS EC2? S3 is just file storage

sorry corrected
there is a similar thing to S3 bundled with Azure (Table storage)

@waffles, November dump going to Azure or you gonna have that migrated off?

1:52 AM
also there is SQL Azure ... which is like Amazon Simple DB
@RebeccaChernoff its migrated off for November ...

I wish the iphone had a way ignore updates.
Apple just replaced my 3G, and now I have 39 updates. And there's 1 I don't want to do, so I can't do update all.

2:23 AM
Hello
Later tonight, if anyone is up, I'm pushing more aesthetic changes to Triton

2:40 AM
What is this Triton

You haven't seen Triton? Or are you playing dumb?

No, and I don't need to play

sec, let me get the new version um and running and I'll show you

| Section2 = | Section4 = | Section7 = }} Triton X-100 (n) is a nonionic surfactant which has a hydrophilic polyethylene oxide group (on average it has 9.5 ethylene oxide units) and a hydrocarbon lipophilic or hydrophobic group. The hydrocarbon group is a 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-phenyl group. It is related to the Pluronic range of detergents marketed by BASF. The pluronics are triblock copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. The part formed from ethylene oxide is more hydrophilic than the part from propylene oxide. Triton X-100 is very viscous at room temperature and is...

Triton is a fictional merman published by Marvel Comics. He first appeared in Fantastic Four #45 (December 1965), and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Fictional character biography Triton is member of the Inhumans' Royal Family, son of Mander and Azur, brother to Karnak, and cousin to Gorgon, Black Bolt, Maximus, Medusa, and Crystal. Triton was born on the island of Attilan, and was exposed to the Terrigen Mist as an infant. The mists altered his body, turning his skin green and giving him the ability to breathe underwater, as well as surviving the cold temperatures and incredibl...

In short, Triton is Note Taking done Awesome
Ok, what browser are you you using? Hopefully a recently updated version of Chrome or Firefox
Here is the most recent version: 102content.com/triton/dev

2:46 AM
yeah

Once the counter goes to full, refresh and start playing

"Currently at: 39 of 39" is stuck in my face the whole time

Refresh

There it goes

I need to make a pop up telling you to do that on the first load
although it probably isn't necessary..

2:51 AM
So does it store all the documents on whatever server and your browser remembers which ones are yours?

Currently everything is stored in the browsers localStorage

Ah

Which I don't believe gets cleared when you clear cookies
Soon I will sync the data to my server and then I'll be able to hook all your different clients together (different browsers)
What ya think?

No confirmation when you click delete? :P
oops

Yeah, thats getting fixed in the next day or two

2:56 AM
It's interesting

The biggest thing is that there needs to be a central object in the code where this stuff gets binded at
actually, just added that in
BTW, the entire code base is available at github.com/chacha/Triton

@TylerChacha - Some of the stuff I tried to tell you before, not realizing the localStorage thing:
Some thoughts...
The word test should be changed to "click here to type".
Also, the overview box should hava some sort of starting view, not an empty blue thing stickin g out there, underneath the menu.
Also, there should be an option for "smaller menu icons and titles" because the overview box gets pushed too far below. I'm on a 13" MacBook. Forget tablets and netbooks...

Nice, the "n" keyboard shortcut, just figured it out.

However, it seems to stop at that. Consider using keybindings for navigation as well.
@TylerChacha - Just make it reload automatically after the first load to get rid of the "x of X" thing. ;-)

@Moshe I have a compact view that I'll be making available soon
It has both smaller buttons and an improved Overview section
If you look at the current dev build, the Overview box is hidden by default.
@Moshe Let me see if I can get a way to activate the compact menu in there for ya

3:35 AM
Anyone have an ultraportable (<12-13") laptop they like/hate?

@NickT - Does a 13.3" MacBook count?
Oh, you mean netbook...

No, I mean not-netbook but almost as small

Ah, well, again, does a 13.3" laptop count?

@RebeccaChernoff A few seconds, I guess.

I have one too

3:39 AM
yea
13.3 MB?
or MBP

I love my MacBook, but I do notice the difference from my 21.5" iMac or my 24"+22" PC.
Xcode is too small sometimes.
As are others.
@NickT - And I assume iPad doesn't count.

Nah

Heh.

I have a 12.1" Dell, fairly old, and my Dad keeps telling me he wants one like mine, so I've been trying to find one
Probably should think strongly about giving a mac to the folks

3:44 AM
@NickT - If you can afford it, go for it. I got Macs for iOs dev and couldn't be happier with them

Well there's no other way for iOS dev, right?

@NickT - Technically, Flash Packager or other third party tools, but really, no, only Xcode.

Who knew Visa.com, MasterCard.com and PayPal.com were all offline today?

I heard Mastercard/Paypal was getting attacked today

I'm glad Anon didn't hit secure.authorize.net, which was discussed...

They made The Economist today, exciting. economist.com/blogs/babbage/2010/12/more_wikileaks

I was reading some commentaries about how the leak is a net positive for the US

Skynet has finally appeared, and it is the internet itself. When it is attacked, it protects itself. When a government takes wikileaks' domain, 10000 mirrors appear the next day. When they take its funding, the companies responsible are taken off the internet.
In the Terminator series, Skynet is the main antagonist — an artificially intelligent system which became self-aware and revolted against its creators. Skynet is rarely seen onscreen and its actions are often performed via other robots and computer systems; usually a Terminator. Origin and Nature Prior to the events of the second movie, Skynet was a computer system developed by the defense firm Cyberdyne Systems for the United States armed forces. Skynet was first built as a "Global Digital Defense Network", given command over all computerized military hardware and systems, including th...

But is the internet an antagonist?

Better hope not
If you consider it an antagonist, you're probably on the wrong side of the fight

and anon. will smote you :P
I'd probably subscribe to the Economist if it wasn't so friggin expensive
Something like $150/yr, probably a bargain, but it's a ton of content

4:19 AM
@NickT Same here.

if you watch the deal sites, it's commonly available for $1 per issue ($50 per year or so)
they also have iphone/ipad apps i hear, though I don't have either device

@DanGrossman What's the hidden cost? I.e. I'm never doing anything through BizRate again.

Here ya go
<https://www.economistsubscriptions.com/Apr10_USLT_All12for$12/index.php>
$12 per 12 issues, recurring at $12 per 12 issues afterwards

Psh, don't take away my excuses not to do things :P

oh, I didn't realize that was the female version of a complaint

4:24 AM

the kind you're supposed to listen to but not try to fix

Since when did females corner the market on lazy
Oh no, restricted space shuttle data
If it falls into the wrong hands, Al'Quaeda might build a space shuttle :(

Is Al'Qaeda still around? I heard there were none left in Afghanistan years ago. Why are we still there again?

Cuz terrorism is bad...mmmkay

4:33 AM
The Economist... $1 per issue. Hacker Monthly... $12 plus shipping per issue :(
I do have a one-year digital subscription as part of an AppSumo deal

perks up

What was said about me and then subsequently deleted? :P

i think it happened to all of us..

1 message moved to Bad Joke Room

Wait,did you create a room just to move bad jokes to?

@RebeccaChernoff What's wrong, he didn't use jQuery?

There is a room called the 'Bad Joke Room', I created it, and the description says 'Where bad jokes come to die'... I think answering that question would just make more redundancy..

4:49 AM
@jin RE: 2nd iteration of the Programmers design. Personally, I think the subtitle should be in the more traditional comment delimiters, instead of HTML comments. e.g. /* programming issues byond coding */ (I dislike the HTML comment format, ugh.)

jQuery on the brain.. finally got around to making my first plugin tonight.

lmao

@TylerChacha I wasn't really going for an answer...just more... seriously??

@RebeccaChernoff I <3 the bad joke room.

@Fosco Nice, what does it do? :D

4:51 AM
@jin Otherwise, I like the 2nd design. The cyan works much better than the green.

:agrees with @GeorgeMarian about preferring code comments over markup comments:

HTML comments always want to make my hands seize up.

@TylerChacha Yeah, that one seems pretty pointless too.
q:

4:55 AM
Hot....Pocket!

@TimStone It manages a login form (can create it too, if the option is passed) and sets up the keydowns/submission/ajax.

This microwave spinach souffle isnt super tasty

Ah, cool stuff.

@Fosco Cool.
@DanGrossman That doesn't even begin to sound appetizing.

Now, if you go to wikipedia do you get double-jimmy?

I guess they thought of that..

5:10 AM
@DanGrossman Hm, it looks like we've all been assimilated.

(Yo Dawg)

@jleedev Oof, you beat me to it.

:lol:

@GeorgeMarian The tag line should definitely read // TODO: Hack, discuss programming issues beyond coding

@TimStone I like it.
Well, maybe without "Hack." It's a bit of a loaded term, unfortunately.

Jin
5:12 AM
have you guys seen the jimmy wales things @balpha did?

He's sticking with Maths-style tags?
@Jin Yeah, heheh
@GeorgeMarian Yeah, I just got distracted by my own coding habits ;)
It doesn't make a terrible amount of sense with it there anyway. :P

I'll stop now.

@TimStone @jin I had another idea for the tags. Maybe a comma delimited list, within parentheses.

i.e. (tag1, tag2, tag3) instead of (tag1) (tag2) (tag3)

Jin
5:14 AM
@dan that's exactly what i'm doing now... cry

heh
Sometimes I'm more productive with the TV on for background nose.
Other times, it's just a distraction. Usually, when I'm not seriously motivated to do the task at hand.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah.....yeah.

Hmm.
I have to be at the airport in 5 hours.
Is it too late to sleep?

Depends.

More importantly, why isn't there a minorpersonaldillemmas.stackexchange.com

5:19 AM
You have an on-topic question? :P

"Should I eat at Taco Bell or KFC tonight?" +1 Great on topic question.
-1 Bad example, too subjective.

@mootinator Be sure to post "Taco Bell" and "KFC" as two separate answers so people can vote on them

Muhahaha.

Every time I see "to make voting easier" in a post my mouse starts moving towards the close button of its own volition

Voting is hard?

5:21 AM
I'd close that as NARQ, since everyone knows that you should find a combination KFC/Taco Bell so you can have both.

There's a Taco Bell and KFC next to each other right around the corner here. They're not attached, separate buildings with separate drive-throughs.

If I actually asked that question I'd have to downvote anyone who said Taco Bell anyhow. I live a 4 hour drive from the nearest one. People should know these things.
"-1 dangerously incorrect"
If I followed that advice I might starve.

@mootinator And then how could you mark the accepted answer? People need to think these things through more carefully.

@DanGrossman lol

Q: How can you tell if a person is a programmer?

Lucas JonesI was wondering when I read the famous "Programmer Habits" thread, I was wondering: Is there any way to tell if somebody is a programmer without actually asking them? Clarification: I am asking for things that you can use to recognise a programmer from "afar" or without knowing them well. To...

Holy crap. This town's water apparently has 42gpg hardness.

@DanGrossman A similar question was asked on Programmers recently.

Hmmm? Who pinged me?

@YiJiang Someone (I think Chacha) mass-pinged a bunch of people earlier. Something to do with the joke room; I don't really know

Not me..
Dan

5:44 AM
I'm sure it was Tyler

Maybe Tyler was just the one who moved it; I'm not sure. It's hard to tell, the history is all screwed up

Hehehe.
