8:00 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I once had a vendor, who when I pointed out a performance bug in their system, swore forever that the perf problem was because .NET was interpreted script, not compiled.

@CRoss "@RebeccaChernoff Methodologies and Practices: The Complete Anthology. Covering everything necessary to fill @RebeccaChernoff's position, and some other tidbits we figured you'd enjoy as much as we did."

Apparently they deduced this because people kept sending them bug reports that included too much info, i.e. "in this method, it is passing null to SomeMethod when [scenario]"
obviously they have never heard of either a stacktrace or reflector.

Haha, nice.

their competitors product (also pure .NET) was like greased lightening
and they knew what they were talking about
guess which we bought? (since I was doing the buy-recommendation)

@MarcGravell sadly this sounds like me vs one of my coworkers

8:02 PM
@MarcGravell I have a co-worker that says stuff like that

@MarcGravell The crappy one, so you could blame any bugs on it?

Side note: How does one grease lightning?

@MarcGravell I'm not sure, because the tragic comedic value of the other vendor seems priceless too.

@RebeccaChernoff Very quickly.

.NET 3.0 being installed is interfering with vbscript and the like

8:03 PM
@CRoss can we trade me for your co-worker? or you for mine? ;)

@drachenstern You know not what you ask for

The sad thing is, while I'm laughing at this, I know I must sound equally stupid to my senior/principal devs.

@PopularDemand I would agree with that sentiment except I'm most often the code-reference guy in my office on .NET and anything not-SQL ... sadly enough

@PopularDemand I circumvented this problem by putting everyone in a position below me.

8:04 PM
@CRoss lmao

@PopularDemand When your senior devs focus either on Cobol or VB6/ASP Classic ...

just yesterday I had to help troubleshoot CPanel on a site hosted not-here, when we're not even a LAMP shop ...

@drachenstern Ouch, the hell?

@TimStone basically it boils down to the damned thing isn't installed right on two different hosts, and they're tryng to move subsite12 of domainA from siteA accountA to siteB with no accounts, but they don't want to move any of the other subsites on accountA or any other domains or accounts to siteB

There are too many redundant sources of information on the Internet these days. I saw a post on meta, and then two people posted it here, and then two people I follow tweeted about it

8:07 PM
@drachenstern Are you sure you don't work with me already?

@CRoss hmmm... I'm pretty sure I don't, but I'll assume that's a compliment?

@drachenstern Sympathy

ahhh

@drachenstern sighs People...And how did you get stuck with the task of helping them?

@MichaelMrozek Your problems are that you're here in chat and using Twitter.

8:09 PM
@TimStone because the only php dev we've considered hiring is back home in Eastern Europe for the holidays and apparently the fact that I can read/write PHP and Linux wasn't unnoticed. I figured the four years it was my primary dev env / platform would've tipped someone off, but alas, they reserve me for the C#/IIS under normal circumstances

Ah. :P

Had he been here he would've been the one tasked with helping and it would've taken yesterday and today, to be sure
he's fresh out of Uni, but he's good. Just no experience.

Remember, @MichaelMrozek, I've got your back:
Dec 5 at 0:29, by Popular Demand
Where's @Michael Mrozek? Oh well, guess it falls to me: Mod fight! Mod fight!

@PopularDemand Though not on Twitter, because there's no reasonable excuse to be there.

@TimStone Thank you, Captain Obvious.

8:15 PM
@PopularDemand Any time.

So I think for lunch today I will consider Subway ... meaning, I just wanted to share

@drachenstern But what you really meant was "Give me your orders and I'll go pick you up something", which I appreciate greatly.

@TimStone Just tell me the address to drop the sandwhich off during normal @TimStone working hours and at your primary/principal business location and it's good as yours ;) ... too far? ... I hoped you wouldn't notice

Hahah

I miss Bouncy.

8:19 PM
Let's have a moment of silence. :(

....BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE
Oh how I hated that thing

That was an oddly accurate four minute silence. Good job everyone.

@MichaelMrozek > ignore this user (everywhere)

BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE

don't mock the bounce
I have /kick and I'm not afraid to use it ;p

8:26 PM
I'll stop him! (for 1 biiillliooonn dollars)

> Do not meddle in the affairs of mods, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

(yet another "please dammit people stop getting logged out" fix on the way up; funny thing about high polling - it does tend to hit a few edge-cases for race conditions in the security code)
@Zypher - turning the entire rack off doesn't count as "stopping him"

> Do not meddle with the love of bounce, for it's adherents are subtle and quick to anger. < ??

@MarcGravell, don't leave debugging code in just because you want a badge. (;

@Marc dammnit

8:28 PM
@RebeccaChernoff zing omg lmao rofl

not that i could right now ... i'm not in the office today

Hahah

I'm working server-side; if I leave an alert in, the only person to see it would be the poor schmuck on RDP
(except of course it would appear on some random IIS account's desktop)

@MarcGravell would it try to goto term0 on Win2k8?

@Zypher do you accept Monopoly money?

8:29 PM
@Zypher devs may be able to wreak havoc, but we are nothing compared to the folks with molly-guarded buttons

@Zypher does term0 on RDP still allow a login?
s/term0/session0/g

mstsc /admin - is that the same as term0? the old /console switch?

@RebeccaChernoff unfortnately no only unicorn dollars @Marc yes yes but we have training is swear @drachenstern yes what marc said /console on pre mstsc 5.1 /admin on post

I'm still not sure why they renamed it. I'm sure there was a reason.

@Zypher interesting

8:32 PM
to annoy the piss outta sysadmins

@Zypher Hrm. I do have some unicorn dollars. Only a million though. ):

damn programmers

@Zypher why else do we live?
ok, /afk

@rebecca hmm that is a shame ... you are leaving your job ... i think we could work something out

8:33 PM
hmmm... am I still here?

@Zypher I've got a million unicorn dollars too...And, I'm closer. What will that get me?
@MarcGravell Unless Rovio has assumed control of your account, I'd say yes.

Rovio!
Right then. goes back to doing the things she should be doing rather than chatting

@Tim ... hmmm maybe 1 call to Rovio

sigh; even I can trip the logout of doom:
Invalid session pair for user: 23354 (23354@meta.stackoverflow.com): Marc Gravell (1)

@MarcGravell Just disable all security, and trust the user's cookie completely
Do it....

8:35 PM
but importantly - it recovered now
@MichaelMrozek ?admin=true

Woo hoo! @RebeccaChernoff has edged past me in all-time The Tavern messages posted!

@Zypher Hmm

Next up, @TimStone and @radp....

hello, all

g'day @tim this is an exploding offer

8:37 PM
@SaraChipps Hello.

a bomb will be mailed to you at which point the offer explodes

@PopularDemand To be fair, most of what I say is complete nonsense anyway, so it should probably only count for half.

@TimStone Well, by that logic, I've only posted, like, two messages, ever.

@Zypher Now the FBI is going to show up at the NY offices. :(

I figured I'd ask in here before posting a question if anyone knew a good reference for OO Ajax with closures and jquery

8:38 PM
Nah i'm at home today ... and they know me already from the rest of my echelon tiggering posts around the web
they just ignore me now

@SaraChipps Try the SO Chat JavaScript room.

or just something that would help me to understand closures better

wow, I didn't know chat had made its way over to SO

8:39 PM
beat me to it :(

You might have more luck with those people. :)

I was wondering why it was so barren over here :)

we also have chat.stackexchange.com for everything else

@TimStone & @PopularDemand scared everyone off

that's awesome, going to check out both

8:57 PM
So apparently it's hard to make a sandwhich...

@drachenstern Uh oh...heh, what happened?

@TimStone I chose subway for lunch apparently
I'm convinced there are three classes of worker in this country
the average, the pathetic, the kind who moving to beggar would be an improvement for society
> $100,000 Check Dropped in Salvation Army Kettle
> An anonymous donor has made a $100,000 gift to the Salvation Army in Shreveport
those two seem to be misleading ...
> A cashier's check was dropped in a red kettle outside the
that's so much the more accurate rendition of the story

@drachenstern I get the impression you were not satisfied.

@TimStone the food will have been sufficient to quench my hunger, however the service leaves more than a little to be desired.

Heh :P
I'm still debating what to have for lunch, which seems a bit wrong for it being 4:00 already..

9:04 PM
I could quote a numeric modifier from TDWTF that would likely be useful to them in ways to increase their appeal to me...
@TimStone that's not normally SOP?
I thought I was early eating at 14:45

@drachenstern Food is very important to me, so I don't normally go so long without eating any.

@TimStone I try not to, but then I have code, and bosses, and coworkers, and all of a sudden time becomes a variable equivalent to zero, and then I have no food and then I have a problem

Ah, yeah. That's one positive side to being relatively isolated for most of the day.

so do the people in chat.SO/javascript not understand the primary purpose of reading?

@drachenstern hrm?

9:15 PM
Certain ones.

@TimStone Hey, don't talk about me like that.

@Zypher something to the tune of "does jquery not support draggable any more?"

@RebeccaChernoff Aw, you almost posted at 16:16:16. But I'm offended you'd think I would be that mean. :p

which going to jquery.com and putting in draggable in the search box and reading would've revealed the answer

oh sigh

9:17 PM
@TimStone I like my timestamp better. I posted at 15:16:17.

@RebeccaChernoff Perhaps one of the few times that your timezone has won. ;)

totally 'shopped; check the reflections

asking, going to look yourself, then coming back to see if you got an answer is not the correct order

@MarcGravell lmao

9:20 PM
@MarcGravell Definitely. There's not even an oy!
No way that's genuine.

@drachenstern I'm not sure my regular expression-based HTML parser can cope with that.

@drachenstern +1
except the SO devs they don't whine

@TimStone that's because obviously the grammar is wrong in your regex, of course. I could show you how to write a FSM that would cope with the correct grammar, but I mean geeze, if you can't even write that then I'm not sure you should ever look at an electron again </sarcasm> ;)

9:23 PM
So, my iPhone got replaced, and when I try to set up my GMail account under Exchange, it hangs when I click the Next button ):

While my eyesight is excellent, it hasn't reached the point where it can view sub-atomic particles yet, so I've conveniently already taken care of that.

@RebeccaChernoff I had that too once, I think it was a cert error, but I forget now

Oh wait, I take that back. I can cancel it, it just grays out Next when I click it and doesn't do anything.

@RebeccaChernoff UNSUPPORTED
But why did your iPhone get replaced?

Battery only lasted a couple hours and the AppleCare plan expired this month.
So now I have a brand new....3g.

9:26 PM
@RebeccaChernoff ewwwww

Ah. Something was draining the life out of my iPhone 4 the other day, not sure what was up with that.

pop-poll: purchase a new iPhone 3GS to replace a failing 3G now, wait for January Somethingth for an announcement from Herr Jobs, or go WinPho7?
Wifey is having a bit of no-luck with her phone and is debating
she's bummed I waited and got a white 3GS 32GB

I'd be willing to give the Windows phone a shot.

She is too after having seen one at the store
the only downside is all the purchased apps

@drachenstern android all the way or blackberry with BBOS 6

9:29 PM
Hm, that's true. I don't have that many apps at the moment, so I imagine I could get by.

@Zypher I'll repeat: "My wife" ... don't know how you managed to overlook that one ;)

no i didn't overlook it :) i just assumed you married a techie since .. you know taht's really the only kinda woman us geeks can get :-D

Hahahah

lol, no, she's not a techie, but she has grown to love some gear and she has gotten much better at fielding the phone calls from the family. Now I get the ones that eventually lead to rebuilds ...
I don't think I could ever get her to leave a smartphone now
and she took to a virtual keyboard way faster than I would've expected
she had a BB before, but she hated it and when she got the 3G she was in love

personally i'd avoid windows phone

Well, that and the following line

I'm...still confused.
We might need a series of panels featuring RCE to illustrate where you're going with this. :P

Heh, no.

I did forget to include a "(:", I'm rather disappointed about that.
But anyway, I'm confused why you apparently find his response to Marc's denial of his feature request objectionable. scratches head

9:42 PM
No, I'm objecting to equating whiny with developers. (;

Oh, I thought those tags were only in his namespace. :P

@Zypher Not with the new stuff ... it seems decent enough. WinMo6 was pure death on a brick tho
@TimStone ouch to the burn!

@drachenstern So very much so, yes.
;)

@RebeccaChernoff Cos I know too many of us, and we're all like that a lot of the time ... but then again I mostly only know good ones ... the kind that get pampered anyways ;)
I carried a ATT Tilt for a bit, not sure if I was trying to prove a point, or that I was a masochist, or what.

@drachenstern Yeah, thankfully NO RESPECTABLE SITE DOES THAT cough
tries to remember where that appears on SO
Actually it might be gone now, if not I'm sure @YiJiang knows where to find it, heh.

The welcome banner linking to the FAQ?
I think that one got fixed.

lol, surely not
brb, gotta go find the bossman

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, yep

Any "expert" redditor around?
<_<
>_>

9:56 PM
@radp Definitely not I. :P

10:08 PM
Wow, my typing is really atrocious today..hrm.

@TimStone Today? ;)

Hahah, more so than usual, that is. ;)
Firefox is here to correct my spelling, but that hardly helps me with typing out code.

There's plenty of times when it doesn't help with the spelling either. :)

The problem with anarchists is that they're anarchists.

True :P

Ah, Apache has resigned from the JCP

Ah, @TimStone reads slashdot - but only at the end of the work day.

What's wrong with reddit?
yay orange envelope :}

@DanGrossman I need to work how well it works for poll-like open ended questions.

reddit isn't a web service, it's a community, like this chat room
poll-like open ended questions will be answered with individual replies, some of which may be starred by other people, but it's not a poll

11:08 PM
@Moshe @TimStone you're done already? Hmmm
meanwhile in ASP.NET land ...
<%@ Page doesn't match System.Web.UI.UserControl remarkably enough, and coworker is confused why it doesn't compile
Talking to him over the phone, I think I'm supposed to say something during his pauses but not sure what

asp.net land is confusing

@DanGrossman so you're not familiar with the syntax I presume?
Yay I love when applying one class to one <tr> closes a bug report :D cf: <tr> to <tr class='IntervalsShowOnly'>

I was, once, years ago, but not anymore
only spent a short time working on an asp.net thing
visual studio does most of the work, which is why it's confusing

Asp.Net web form page framework supports the following directives

1. @Page
2. @Master
3. @Control
4. @Register
5. @Reference
6. @PreviousPageType
7. @OutputCache
8. @Import
9. @Implements
10. @Assembly
11. @MasterType
1. is System.Web.UI.Page
3. is System.Web.UI.Control (and the assorted inherited control types, like UserControl)
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/t8syafc7.aspx Well I'll be, I never knew that it would do this: ASP.NET treats any directive block (<%@ %>) that does not contain an explicit directive name as an @ Page directive (for a page) or as an @ Control directive (for a user control).
I'll have to retain that trick for in the future

11:25 PM
I like my web frameworks to be built in userland, as regular code on top of the language, not compiled away into someone else's DLL :/
See: every web framework in every interpreted language
too much mystery for too simple a problem

@DanGrossman Now that's a frigging website

yeah, very cool
