11:00 AM
:/

@Aza I agree. "Prove that you're entitled to feel the way you do" definitely isn't nice.

user206222
Hard to ignore when someone's trying to guide site policy -- and gaining lots of popular support while doing it.

user206222
It's not worth flagging, if I mention the word "microaggression" in this chat I know someone's gonna be immediately ticked off, and I don't wanna deal with being let down when a flag I raise isn't actioned.

and erf. Big things are easy

@Aza Yeah, that's the point at which you end the conversation. People are just being ridiculous.

11:00 AM
little things are hard and just as painful

@Aza may I suggest you file those people under "twerps not worth my time"? I know that's easier said than done, but you sure ain't going to convince them (as if you have to in the first place) and they are not worth your energy or anguish.

@Bart eh, not that easy

user206222
Y'all are just saying "ignore them," but I don't think y'all are listening. Ignoring them isn't how this works.

Sticks and stones and all that

Just ignoring or flagging isn't really an option

user206222
11:01 AM
It's not sticks and stones, it's "site policies are set by the most vocal who gain active and popular support."

flags on stuff like this will be declined regularly

Ignoring them means letting them get their way in setting policies.

user384163
It's so pervasive. You can't ignore it.

and if someone is using a misinterpretation to gather support to shape site policy, well, if you don't speak up you'll have to contend with "why didn't you speak up when we decided this" later

user206222
You don't realize the position we're in, when we see content like this. We have to fight it. It must be pushed back against. That's what we're embroiled in, when we walk into meta.

11:02 AM
It's a lose-lose situation really

@Aza I'm embarassed to say - the policy on such things, least on one of my chats is I would be disappointed in anyone who does that kinda thing

@Aza that's a sad situation.

user206222
Whenever I declare something a lost cause, whenever I just pass something up, that's an insidiously toxic post staying up. A toxic post no one appears to recognize as such, even when it's popular.

Or other people have made the same value determination you did then. Not worth eating the wrath of meta fighting for

user206222
I've done it a lot, this week. It's deeply saddening each time, knowing those people are gonna hurt someone else like me, and it was just a choice I had to make to devote my energy elsewhere.

user194636
11:04 AM
The only realistic way to prevent that is to actively moderate stuff before it posted.

I'm rather dismayed that those kind of posts aren't taken down when they're flagged.

@Magisch meh, its only imaginary internet points.

its not
the wrath of meta is a lot more then downvotes and it wears you out hard

@Aibobot wrath does not equal downvotes I'd assume.

@Magisch meh, I'd do it
And my stand has always been that it's the polite thing to do

11:05 AM
@Aza that's just what I'll be doing, or try to do. So the best advice I can give. I do accept it that I can be wrong of course, and it might not be a good advice.

and it means something to folks.

@Aza Moderators have to deal with comments all the time. So it only makes sense you'd see a lot of the bad stuff.

@JohnDvorak depends on the site

user206222
@JohnDvorak I'm not a moderator anymore. I threw that towel in because I was tired of this happening in TL. I don't want to go into details, but it was the right decision for me.

Admittedly I'd get a lot less of this than a language or a human-experience site

11:06 AM
e.g. if someone will keep insulting me over something, my first defense line is to ignore that person.

user194636
In principle, there's no particular reason posts and comments have to publicly visible before they are assessed.
Flags are sort of an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

@Shadow that encourages some bullies

@Aza a horrendously stupid question perhaps, but is there something we actually can do to help? Like, practically?

user384163
Not everyone sees what is wrong with what is being said. I had an edit rejected just yesterday because I removed someone calling my life a choice.

@PaulWhite looking at every flag and post?

11:09 AM
That there's outright disrespect going on in TL is bad. And the common folk doesn't get to know about it unless a mod speaks up.

It messes with you when people just deny your reality

that seems like... a lot of work
@JohnDvorak Its worth remembering mods are....

user194636
@Aibobot Before the post becomes visible at all. Can't flag stuff that isn't visible.

user206222
@Bart Community moderation is a curse sometimes, but with mod support, it's also a powerful tool. Harmful crap needs to be taken down and that power's always, at least in part, in your hands.

user384163
Those messages often stay up. Because most of us stay quiet. Until very recently I did.

11:09 AM
typically strong personalies

@Aibobot what? Ignoring them?

@Shadow yup

hmm

user194636
@Aibobot Of course it does. I said "in principle". I don't believe it is obviously a silly proposition either.

Bullies are cowards

11:10 AM
So you say attack back with full force?

Well, convince them its not worth it, yes

Doesn't fit the character of many people.

@Aza I'll keep an eye on that whenever I'm around. And you're always free to ping if that helps.

It does not

user384163
My experience with bullies is they double down when you get aggressive. That idea that they fear confrontation is a myth to me.

user194636
11:11 AM
Getting aggressive is never the right option.

user206222
But other than that, really? It depends on how much you want to get into the trenches. Making sure we're heard is one step. Helping others figure this stuff out, is another. You see stuff I never will -- you get a window into how people talk behind (in this case metaphorical) closed doors.

@bruglesco been my experience as well

@bruglesco guess it depends how hard you strike back. Not hard enough, and indeed it'll just get worse.

Please don't let the atmosphere in TL taint your view of everyone else. I'm not evil. I only want the best for everyone.

user206222
There are a lot of resources out there to help -- looking 'em up is another step. Following trans activists on Twitter or elsewhere can hone your intuition for what is and isn't appropriate behavior.

11:12 AM
I had to go absolutely nuclear and almost get the guy expelled to stop him for a couple weeks in school

@Magisch but it eventually helped?

I recommend following Simone Kern and Rabbi Danya Ruttenburg on Twitter.

user206222
I'm kinda just spitballing, there's a lot here. But a lot of it boils down to, going out of your way to listen, and then helping to shape your community based on that. It's incremental work, and it's slow. But it's so, so important.

He eventually got expelled, so in a sense
Not of his own accord

@bruglesco dosen't necessarily mean violence

user384163
11:14 AM
@Aibobot neither did I.

@bruglesco but most of the bullies I knew were at least

When you hit back at bullies, you need to hit hard enough to actually scare them of the consequences

user206222
@Bart A few more messages got scattered in the chatter above. If I bring any post to chat, it'll start a long discussion, so I'll have to do it when I'm more... emotionally prepared, for that. But maybe soon.

user194636
@Magisch I hope you mean that metaphorically

user384163
Most of the bullies I dealt with were amazing with words. They didn't just make you dear then physically. They could use their words to turn a room against you.

11:15 AM
@Aza whenever. At your own pace.

@PaulWhite I do

user206222
:)

@PaulWhite politely threw two people out of a classroom back in the day
@bruglesco I've been that person
you're insecure as hell

@Aza it is noble of you to do that here though. I get the feeling most people here are prepared to learn, but need a little help

Bullying in school is a big issue everywhere. I had to contend with physical violence from multiple sources myself, and no points for guessing whom the teachers kept punishing for it. And yet here I am trying to be on the best relations with everyone.

user194636
11:17 AM
Kids can be awful. Just like adults.

@PaulWhite true but awful kid can become a wonderful adult.

user206222
@Magisch Yeah, it's definitely a strike-while-hot situation, too. Finding the right time, with the right people, when there's space to chat, when someone isn't gonna deliberately gum up the works... s'rare.

user194636
@Shadow Indeed. One hopes all of them will. Everyone makes mistakes, especially at younger ages.

Most of the adults at least have good intentions. Kids just act on their first idea because there is no consequence for them.

user194636
And they have fewer experiences to refer back to.

11:19 AM
@JohnDvorak Adults can be just as bad, or impulsive

user194636
Growing up is not easy. Some never manage it.

@Aibobot true

@JohnDvorak or they don't think of the consequence.

@Shadow true

I was that 20something lol

11:20 AM
Kid is likely to eat as much sweets as he/she can, even knowing it will cause stomachache.

user206222
And, thanks for asking, sincerely, @Bart. (Apologies for pingspam.) It caught me a little off guard, I wish I had a better answer. It's not a question I get, often. But I'm always happy to chat and help if you have questions, too -- please feel free to ping me, any time.

user194636
Of course there are wonderful things in the world too. People do focus on the negatives.

@Aza np

user384163
The idea that only kids are bullies is not my experience either

Night!

user194636
11:22 AM
@Aibobot My wife and I have pretty much stopped watching the evening news

Morning news are any better?

user194636
Ha! No.

Our PM asked his followers to stop watching news of a specific TV channel.

user194636
But I have other ways to become informed, and don't need unrelentingly depressing things thrown at me for an hour every day.

@Aza G'night!

user194636
11:23 AM
@Shadow Yikes. Which county is that?

I'm trying to always stay away from politics.

@Shadow That's generally a good indication you should start watching that channel.

@PaulWhite As much as I risk being in an echo chamber..

"Fire fighters saved 100 kittens today" is nice news item, but it becomes boring after few times. The bad news are never really boring, new bad things happen 24/7.

I mostly rely on rss feeds for news ;p

11:25 AM
@PaulWhite Israel

In the ancient times people would watch bloodshed in a theatre and then walk away knowing it could never happen to them. These days, we're all in the same arena.

@Shadow Israeli politics is... weird. It's not really like anywhere else, cause there are a zillion parties that matter.

I'm not even sure who's running the country at the moment...

@user58 bibi

user194636
11:27 AM
Local news and politics I find more interesting. I do try to keep up with major developments in the world, but another shooting, suicide, or armed robbery every 5 minutes is not something I need to know all at once over dinner.

Same government that was before elections

user194636
@Shadow thx

@user58 worked for the belgians

Did he form a coalition?

We have elections coming soonish

11:27 AM
@user58 nope, he can't.

Exactly.

I don't know which opposition party is standing in my constituency .

It's either joining forces with "the enemy" or go to yet another elections. @user58
@JohnDvorak but no bulls.
@Gryphon not really. We're very much like USA these days.
Two major parties only.

There were no bulls in the ancient times either. It was christians v. lions.
And if I ever were to watch christians v. lions, it would certainly be from the first person perspective.

user194636
TIL John Dvorak is a lion

11:31 AM
I'm not a lion.

user194636
Oh!

@PaulWhite my kids calls me "elephant" due to the noise I make when I sneeze. :P

doh!

user194636
@Shadow I have never been called an elephant but I am told I sneeze too loudly.

When I worked at amdocs, people in the floor thought that's an emergency drill when I sneezed sometimes. (Not kidding. :))

user194636

But eventually they all knew it's me and all was good. :)

user194636
@Shadow By the way, that article is alarming reading. I know little about it, but does Israel have much in the way of guarantees for a "free press" or similar? Seems like a very odd thing for a PM to call for.

@PaulWhite well.... it's really complicated.

There was only one case where the christian survived, and the king traveled to see it in person and to scramble an escape plan. Well, technically it wasn't a christian, but that's just a detail.

11:35 AM
But yes, we still have free press.

user194636
Hm.

Our press is bashing our PM directly and personally for years.
They insult his wife and kids.
So.... I do understand his point of view, somewhat.

user194636
That seems very unfair

It is, but he's still there.
And to be honest? Those bashings and hatred is the reason he's still in power.

This is starting to sound reminiscent of US politics.

user194636
11:37 AM
Seems pretty obviously wrong to bring family and kids into it.

The other major party is NEW, and was created for the sole purpose of taking him down.

user194636
Assuming his wife isn't also elected in any way.

user194636
But as I say, I know nothing of it, so.

Wow, you know you've done something very wrong or very right when one of the major political parties in your country is devoted to taking down.

So, creating a whole new political party just to take down the current PM is so wrong in so many levels, I can't even start.
@PaulWhite well.... it's not black and white either. They also do silly things.
@Gryphon very true

user194636
11:40 AM
@Shadow Assuming the new party is elected, what happens then? Presumably they policies beyond locking up Bibi or whatever it might be.

Essentially Israeli politics is US politics in 3-4 years if Trump gets reelected.

So now Israel is stuck in endless elections loop since that new party can't take him down, and he can't form a new government since they block his way.

Is what I'm reading from this.

The good old fashioned "We won....Now What?"

user194636
Isn't Spain in a similar pickle?

11:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek exactly
@PaulWhite dunno... anyone from Spain around?

user194636
I think I recall them having the nth election in m months due to inconclusive results

@Gryphon yup

@Shadow me, what's up?

@202324 are you stuck in endless elections loop? ;)

@Shadow What round is this for you guys?

11:43 AM
@Shadow Statistically 100% of repeated elections don't cause a third election.
So, probably not.

@202324 wait.... didn't we agree on "Judah"? :(

@Shadow I changed my mind.

user194636
@202324 Does Spain have a government right now?

changing @202324's mind again

user194636
2019 Spanish general election may refer to: April 2019 Spanish general election November 2019 Spanish general election...

user194636
11:46 AM
Well that speaks for itself I guess

@PaulWhite yes, mostly. They can't name new ministers, and a few other unimportant stuff.
@Shadow yes, master?

user194636
Thank you. I thought I read she was headed for a third election.

@202324 you are Judah.

@Shadow yes, master.

Now bring me my coffee.
:P

11:47 AM
@PaulWhite stuff is good. Thank you.

@Shadow Thanks for the ping. No, my instances should not have been active. Unfortunately, metasmoke was having problems at that time. MS having problems often causes random SmokeDetector instances to become active. I was afk at the time. Fortunately, someone in Charcoal HQ put my instances on standby.

@Bart funny actually

1:00 PM

@Shadow oh boy...
I bet you a lot of people will actually want that lol

@Emilie nah... I want to be able to activate the honk by farting now that would be awesome. :P
But honk that sounds like a fart.. pointless, people won't understand that noise. lol

do teslas have not-a-flamethrower attachments yet?

@Shadow I had a preference for the goat one myself :)

1:06 PM
@Shadow that reminds me of the Domino's Pizza speakers they installed on their electric scooters in NL. Instead of engine noise they would say "Dominos Dominos Dominos" and "Hmmmmmm Tasty"

@Emilie to be honest, there are already devices that change the car honk sound to animals sound, a friend of mine had such thing years ago.

Unless you're already surrounded with goats, I find the goat's scream to be very attention catching
Especially if you have the feeling you're about to get rolled over by a giant electric goat

a goat-E if you will

hmm... wait... he didn't have something changing the car's honk, sorry. But such a device, which can be used instead: amazon.com/Wolo-345-Animal-Electronic-System/dp/B00029XH36

@rene Welp, it's looking like I'll see the sun come November 13th. That's the day for the small claims hearing.
