Did a quick skim through - and well a few things...
its... loooooong
(Which isn't always a problem)
But it feels like we could probably allude to the quoty bits, and the historical and link. People on meta do have a rough idea of what's going on - and it kinda is a lot of filler before the really good bits.
Its... two great questions a great answer.
(I don't fundamentally disagree with any of it, but people have... short attention spans)
honestly, I only went back on SO because the Unicorn chats started to convince me (esp. #2 & 4 and just having some positive back and forth with a CM again). Then this happened which burned that bit of trust down, collected the ashes, and then atomized them
@Magisch Hey, I was spending quite copious amounts of time here before I got asked to moderate this... If I recall correctly I spend that time saying I would not moderate this :P
A leader leads from the front - if SE employees want to have good interactions with SO (and we're talking leadership) they must set the example. That answer was not the example which needed to be set
@Magisch Yep... I'm... still not sure why I accepted in both cases. And I should find a site where I can just be a normal user because I think I still don't know how that works :P
I honestly have a lot of experience leading (in various situations, I've lead stuff besides military :) and this last year - I've seen a dearth of leadership. I've seen people (esp. the CMs) try really, really hard but be taken down everytime because nobody knows what is going on
oh, either would be refreshing at this point. The key to determining if "there is or is not leadership" I learned to look for is "do people know what is going on and what is expected of them?" and the answers this year have been increasingly worrisome
partially, just experience has taught me that if you do not set and maintain good expectations (so everyone is on the same page at the least) then your just going downhill from there
From twitter, for example - looks like they're rewriting the whole platform in .net 3.0 ...
Now, here's the thing, talking to people is hard, especially... well, lots of people who you might not know.
And personally
I trust SE's technical competency a fair bit
They know what's going on
Community is a bit of a unique challenge.
You're practically having to deal with... well us, folks inside the company who may or may not use the platform, folks outside the community who see SO as something big and influencial....
I mean, I deal with SU folks, MSE, and rarely sticking my nose out on a few other sites. Even then, I occationally end up taking a mental health day from modding.
@JGreenwell There's a bit of a pain point if 'good expectations' means 'everyone on the same page'. The expectations are pretty much set (a bit more top-down). If people can't get on that page, that's a whole different and much harder problem to solve.
why wouldn't they upgrade to a 4.0 version (if they were going to upgrade anyway....and if I remember MS is going to drop support of 3 - yeah, 3 but not 3.5)?
Have they said what the expectations are? I can guess myself (and my outlook is pretty bleak) but until they actually come out and just say "its a help desk site now" - I just have to keep moderating like I always have (or I would if I hadn't gotten sick of being attacked for doing that over & over & over)
@JGreenwell Well, one of the things I got was that they want to keep more people moderating like they always have, but get rid of the attacks by presenting the moderation differently to users on the receiving end of it.
sigh...its 3am here and I still have to get up tomorrow (stupid weekend couldn't come a day earlier :P) so I'm out. Hopefully, somebody will figure out what is going on
@Magisch Hmmm. Moderating this thing for a while, I've definitely seen things that I probably wouldn't call calm or professional. Things have been a bit harsher than I'd like to see (and I'm Dutch, and still fall prone to being too direct on the internet). I think there's definitely some kind of difference in the feedback talked about on the blog, and the feedback SE has been getting on meta lately.
Just dropping that as a last thought before I forget about that again.
Meta is verbal contact sport ;p. How do you turn an attack to your advantage? Which battles are worth fighting, and when do you leave folks spoling for a fight all dressed up but nowhere to go? ;p
@MetaAndrewT. If you do end up replacing your system hard drive, do make sure you've disabled disk encryption programs like BitLocker. I learned that the hard way very recently
@Bart That sounds so awesome! My dad opened all windows yesterday evening :/ That man should not be allowed to roam free without my moms supervision :/
We had the house at 24 degrees... he let in a 35 degree heat :/
True. I don't know how I survived this long either, but at least I know that if you open windows while it's 35 degrees outside and 24 inside, the inside will heat up instead of cool down further :/
Create a script that automatically features posts based on views and votes.
SE basically gave control of the featured posts to the community, while removing the Hot Meta Posts at the same time. The community response to this was pretty clear, so let's just reimplement the same feature using the ...
@JohnDvorak They don't. Certainly not the opinions gathered through meta.
There was some quote to the effect of "[...] in the past we've spent so much time on Meta which has .015% of Stack Overflow's active users and is not representative of the community as a whole." I wonder how much main-site traffic could be attributed to the contributions of those .015%...
Perchance, is "community as a whole" a code word for homework posters and homework solvers?
Sooo, if MSE visitors aren't representative enough of the general community, then why are we solving this by showing policy changes to MSE visitors but not to the general community?
Dang. How can I subscribe to Shog's comments without 21st century voodoo? Even on topics that I feel negatively towards, he's so even-handed and understanding that completely changes things around in my mind.
If only we have two more Shogs. And one more Catija.
