12:00 PM
But what they're currently doing will ensure it becomes worse
4

That.

@Magisch I think you misinterpretted it
> the psychological safety for employees is the reason for moving our communications to the blog from Meta.

... and I just realized a change in UI: "Asked [date time] ago, Viewed [number] times" is now placed under the title

Not "we're closing meta"

> TBH the CMs fought pretty hard so we could keep that and make sure the Mods have the outlet they need.

12:00 PM
@MetaAndrewT. I noticed it half an hour ago. Ur slow

That reads to me as we wanted to get rid of all of the main -> meta traffic without replacement
and the CMs talked them down from it

@Magisch I think it literally meant folks would avoid meta.

that means.... yeah, all userscripts that rely on displaying something on the infobox collapsed 😂

I'm annoyed if such a decision came that it was purely on MSO

Hah. Take that StackApps

12:03 PM
I'm annoyed because I hoped against hope that SO was not like every other tech company

@JourneymanGeek These two sites are the only metas I know where people speak about the direction and philosophies of the company

But they are, they're by all means just following industry standards, but that's disappointing

@Magisch they aren't, they don't have tons of money to spend.

They measure it in pounds

That does not make it better

12:04 PM
@Magisch I read the 'that' as referring to the featured on Meta thing, as if they wanted to get rid of featured tags as well? Not meta entirely ;)

@Tinkeringbell Removing all traffic from main to meta kills meta

...personally, I think SE would benefit from simply having its staff hang out with some of the regulars more - even just lurk in the TL. Staff could pick up a thing or two on how to effectively use meta from the people who are the experts on it, as well as getting a crash course in "power user culture", so to speak.

@Mithrandir this is kinda the real solution

But they've made a commitment that power user problems aren't priority right now

@Magisch Meh... But perhaps it's time to ask what that was supposed to mean, how it should be interpreted ;) I have good hopes it's not as bad as it seems.

12:05 PM
you can't monetise power users, and their power users are by and large a lot more conservative then the company culture
we're at straight up odds on every level

@Mithrandir and something that folks should be working towards in the long run

@Tinkeringbell It's right in the answer. They don't want to send new users to meta because even employees get panic attacks there. Well, what is it useful for then? They're moving feature requests off of meta with the new bug tracker, and meta consensus means nothing as meta users represent 0.15% of users. What else is meta good for?

@Mithrandir Curious, what do you think makes an 'expert' on meta?

screaming carthathically into the void?

@Magisch lemme put it this way

12:07 PM
@Magisch Noooo! They don't want to send new users to certain kinds of meta posts, not keep them out of meta at all :)

@Tinkeringbell He's obviously referring to himself

44 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
I think I can see where it matches, and I think it may be good. I've seen the same crap on IPS: Mad/rude user makes meta post, meta post becomes hot and in the side bar, and more mad/rude users from across the network chime in... That's not the thing I'd like to present to new users either!

(Wasn't helping that this was about a very popular HNQ post on IPS either, so we already had lots of people coming in)

@Tinkeringbell reputation ...

Why are we discussion intensive internal intentions?

@Tinkeringbell gold tag badge...

12:08 PM
@Marshmallow @rene Let's keep this serious, shall we?

This is almost entirely speculation and interpretation
OK

@Tinkeringbell I'm sorry I don't read sara's post that way
she means all of meta, and specifically the users that frequent it

^ interpretation.

@Tinkeringbell Someone who is able to use it to communicate effectively, clearly get their point across, and be able to respond to people who have questions / criticisms. Basically... what a lot of mods do (not necessarily me, @Marshmallow) on a regular basis.

We can stick to what needs less of the speculation and more of the observations.

12:09 PM

If she doesn't, thats a lot of unfortunate wording for 2 sentences

@Magisch this is my reputation graph (Its buggy when I remove SU)
Getting meta is hard
And just cause you're a kickass designer or dev dosen't mean you get meta.

@Magisch Eh, not the way I read it :/ I still read Sara's answer in the same light as Tim's original post, which for me means that We're removing Hot on Meta as I don't want to send new people to a place where people have these experiences. shall be interpreted as 'these posts tend up to show in Hot on Meta, and we don't want to send people to those kinds of posts'.

Well, they've ensured nothing but these posts show up in meta

Well, hard is broad. It's not hard in the sense that you need some special skill. It's hard in the sense that you need some persistence for some while until you get it to a satisfactory level

12:11 PM
I can guarantee you outside of burn requests in the next 6 months we won't get a single positive or even neutral post featured on there
I'd put money on that

@Mithrandir Which technically sounds nice, though 'able to respond to people' is something that is probably already ruled out purely due to time constraints?

Sure, a way with words helps, but lots of B1 and B2 English speakers get their point across when they're not being confrontational etc.

@Tinkeringbell which isn't a ideal situation...

@JourneymanGeek Sure. I understand how frustrating that must be, and how hard it then can be to decide what to respond to and what not....

I can get my point across, and my english is a c- in 10th grade

12:12 PM
@Magisch true but someone misinterpreting what you say has less concequences

Anyway, this is similar to IPS HNQ Removal, which the real solution is to allow mods remove a question from HNQ. Thus, I agree on the suggestion to allow mods to remove them from hot meta... that's all.
afk

and you pick the sites you're on

thats also true

Yeah, I don't get the "OMG it's so much more work for mods" thing
But I'm not a mod

I mean, now mods have editorial control of meta
which may not turn out the way SE wanted
a lot of mods are equally miffed to meta regulars

12:14 PM
The random hot thingies were useful because of their low threshold of three votes.

@Marshmallow so, we can see how it gets sorted out

Someone asking a well-intentioned support question will get less love from now on

@Marshmallow it is not much work to actually feature something. What to feature is the challenge.

And in the next mod elections someone may run (and win) on a platform of using the featured feature to make the displeasure of meta known as much as possible

Well, well-intentioned and -formed
@rene Still.

12:15 PM
@Magisch looks like folks are doing it already

yeap
hence why I don't think it's gone as planned

Or, heck, apply the HNQ/Hot Questions formula & restriction to Hot Meta Posts: 8-hour wait, mods can remove when needed, etc....

If they're like me (which they definitely are, but upgraded) they'd just decide on what to feature instead of rereading the same comments on importantish posts in hopes for an update

@MetaAndrewT. This seems like a good idea to me. Propose it as a feature request?

Meta meta hot meta

12:18 PM
@Magisch Just cause things don't go to plan dosen't mean you can't wait for the fire to die down, and roast @Marshmallow on it..
4

Hey

Yeah, let's roast the Marshmallow! :P
I mean, there should be enough torches AND pitchforks :P

how about sautee á parrot?

You'd have to catch me first!

That would prove difficult, as I am a cactus, which are known to be stationary and still

12:19 PM
More seriously - see how the initial reaction is, then see what we can make of it ;p

@Magisch That is no excuse

@Magisch there's cultures were roast cacti is a delicacy....

@Magisch You must be thriving in the current weather! :P How's the office? Bad, or hell?
@JourneymanGeek There's also cultures that can process cactus in such a way it provides a pretty solid high, I heard.

He's essentially Hellboy
Smokey hey, that's a valid answer to the question!

12:21 PM
@Mithrandir I pass. Anyone else feel free to use/steal this idea and post it...

I think they just did a change to the question pages...

@Tinkeringbell I took a vaction to the center of the sun an hour ago
was a bit chilly

@MetaAndrewT. I think there's already an answer that suggest changing stuff to 'remove' instead of 'add', it can be dropped as a comment there (if there isn't already one)
@Magisch Are outside temperatures already hitting 40 over there? It's quite the news here, whether we'll reach it or not, and there may be a false reading involved :P

39° afaik
but 75% RH
belch

@JourneymanGeek the /questions page, or the individual Q&A thread?

12:23 PM
The latter

@Magisch Dang! I don't know about here, but my hometown has just hit 37, at 36% RH

When did views/creation date/last activity moved from the sidebar to the space under the title? I don't see this mentioned in Recent feature changes to Stack Exchange (yet).

I think it may be half a degree or so hotter here, and the humidity is probably similar...

@Martin I was asking about that toooooooo

@Martin About an hour ago.

12:24 PM
@Martin probably 1-hour ago

15
Q: A question's sidebar stats are now under the title, why?

TheLethalCoderVery recently, past few minutes or so?, a new build was pushed out that changed the location of a question's stats from the top of the sidebar content to underneath the title. I can't exactly put my finger on why this change feels odd. Perhaps it is because statistical information like that be...

We spent lunch outside and it was doable in the shade...

We have an extreme heat advisory warning
apparently in the city at large its only ~50% RH though
It's just here is wetter cause of the location within the city

@Mithrandir Nice speculation in the comments there... assumptions being made, and then reacted upon with 'better ideas' :P
@Magisch Cities are notorious for being even hotter in this kind of weather. I'm almost glad there's a lot of greenery and garden where I live, that helps with the heat.

12:48 PM
hm. The heroine in this movie got stabbed in the shoulder with a screw driver, beaten up by generic badass #2, nearly drowned... and dies from getting shot in the shoulder? Or is she dead...
Oh, she didn't die
(watched Furie, which is basically John Wick was a Vietnamese woman, and instead of a dead dog, her daughter got kidnapped, and she's a retired badass. Also Avengence, which ended up being a better movie than I expected)

1:04 PM
@ShaWiz this one appears to have some legitimate, albeit debatably low-quality, answers on Wordpress (where the profile is also blocked from answering). IP-blocked too, so... not doing anything at this point :)
@ShaWiz gone
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog gone
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog and gone
and with that, my pile is gone (smaller than I thought it was)

Are you still the person who does all the serial voting investigations @JNat?

I'm out of ticket land, and have been for... maybe almost a year and a half now?
So, no
animuson is prolly your primary point of contact on that, at this point

I was going to pre-emptively apologize for this week :p

that being said, tricky ones will still be escalated to Shog, or added to a CM backlog :)
@Magisch if you're apologizing, I'm sure some will trickle my way anyway ;P

A CM backlog ... that is where you keep shog10 ?

1:15 PM
no, it's where we keep shogs 1 through 8
'cause it's a countdown thing, like DEFCON

Wait... shogs don't start at 0?

we don't talk about shog 1-8 though right?

I've already said too much

Apr 12 '17 at 23:12, by Shog9
Shhh! Each generation gets a little bit less bitey
Apr 12 '17 at 23:15, by Journeyman Geek
(and this folks, explains the mystery of @Shog9 they finally got the optimal level of biteyness with this one.)

@JourneymanGeek That was from before the whole welcoming thing though. Did they revisit that? :P

1:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell no idea ;p

Bite level reset to 9...

@JourneymanGeek Well, as part of our job description was holding CMs back if they went too far, we can just change the number to 10 if needed :P

@Tinkeringbell some biteyness is needed though

@JourneymanGeek Hence... if needed! :P

shog is a remarkably sane individual
considering his job :D

1:24 PM
@Magisch Or is the appropriate kinda crazy

Shog? Sane? Now I've heard everything

He once banned me from chat.so for a week
I 100% had it coming

To be fair, I don't think there'll ever be a moment I get to change it to 10 ;)

2:14 PM
hm
I didn't realise that's something folks could do under the GDPR

> The definition of data is pretty broad,
I don't know if it'll work everywhere. It sure seems like a stretch of what it actually means to do to me.

@Tinkeringbell on the other hand, I've always considered emails to be "private"
and people will just move to, IDK
whatsapp to gossip.

Yeah. E-mails don't really fall under GDPR as far as I'm concerned (unless it's a mailing thread you have with whoever you're GDPR-ing). I don't think mails from other people that just happen to mention your name are supposed to be shared.

Cause that comes with a whole other kind of privacy breach :)

2:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell for extra fun...

@Feeds Hey, they fixed your oneboxing! :P

@Tinkeringbell "fixed"
By... not oneboxing? ;p

Hey, it's something :)
And things can use a bit of positivity right now, I feel :P
I think that one doesn't onebox because there's no list?

Given the lack of a staff response or announcement in two hours, as well as a build being pushed out outside of normal work hours, I'm going to assume that the current build is a work-in-progress that got pushed to prod by mistake.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog citation needed

2:21 PM
"outside of normal work hours" - SE has employees all over.

@Tinkeringbell or it got kicked off the onebox list (temporarily?)

I didn't say it is; just that it could be.

You could be wrong

I'm not sure how its important ;p

@Tinkeringbell depends on whether the content of the email is personal information

2:23 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog No. You said "I'm going to assume". That's not the same as "could be".

Phrasing can be hard sometimes...
But yes, I did mean to say that it could probably be that a build was deployed to prod by mistake.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog: by mistake
You're assuming mistakes were made.
Well a few are, certainly

...but mostly by you.
:P

They are spelling misteaks

I don't understand why a change would be made without, at the same time, marking the corresponding feature request as .

2:29 PM
because different people presumably write the code, test it, push it out and talk about it...
Patience is not just a single player card game.
3

3:02 PM
Why is it important that feature requests be marked complete within a short period of time?

@KevinB It isn't

'cause you need to know NOW!1!!

@JNat Technically, we know things so fast, no one's told us its happening ;p

@Feeds we went back to the past now!?

re-introducing*

3:17 PM
Maybe its back to the future

3:32 PM
...just finding all the relevant discussions about the latest MSO fiasco is proving a challenge...

@Mithrandir Just wait until you start reading and have to keep your sanity.

i mean... the discussion is in a chatroom
the majority of it is there

4:12 PM
Hhh... I failed to setup heat detector... and it's already late...
Oh well, gonna continue tomorrow...
I know I need a spring and a node

@JNat Not quite gone. Site accounts have been deleted, but network profile still exists.
If the user has ever manually signed in to stackexchange.com themselves, a staff member needs to delete their network profile.

it was gone
just not synced
the network profile did not exist; I'd deleted it

4:41 PM
@JNat thanks!

2 hours later…
6:23 PM
Hmm. @JourneymanGeek, around?

6:53 PM
@Mithrandir Do you need a dog, or can a parrot help out too?
In fact I have no silver-tag badge but I suspect that my one silver badge may be lost. This suspect is depending on my memory (so that in fact any badge may not be lost). When I lost some badge, I can know ? — Hee Kwon Lee 7 mins ago
^ Anyone know the answer to the question in there?
Because I don't :(

@Tinkeringbell I was looking for JMG's input on something. It can wait. Thanks, though.

@Mithrandir Sure, you're welcome :)

@Tinkeringbell As far as I can understand, they're asking if there is any notification if a tag badge gets revoked?
I do not believe there is any such notification.

7:10 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Or any other way to find out, if I understand

You could see if the system "recommends" you a tag badge you clearly remember earning earlier

*correctly
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I don't think OP clearly remembers having had a specific badge though, so... :/

@Mithrandir sounds like the sort of gun Schwarzenneger would hold
@JourneymanGeek It's also maybe a status of having an ailment. Or is that not how nouns work
@Tinkeringbell 20 years from now the verb for totally obliterating someone or something with I dunno, a laser weapon or something, will be called GDPRing.
@JourneymanGeek WTH is "Avengence"? Do you mean the Nicholas Cage movie "Vengeance: A Love Story"?
I don't know how to put this, so I'm not gonna put it.
Nicholas Cage sucks.
Unless it's the Coens or some really badass director, he will continue sucking.
It's what, 5 a.m. there? If it is, I'm pretty sure you're up, refining your sleep-dodging skills.
If it's 9 a.m. you might be asleep.

7:38 PM
@Marshmallow you're forgetting the '-'

Right. G-DPRing

Careful. Or I will start that roasting
How's life? Still busy?

Nope, on a needle
Like the guy that said the wheel of fortunate will land on 5 and is waiting for it to stop.
@Tinkeringbell BTW, how did the grandma party go?

Oof. Any signs of that wheel stopping soon?
@Marshmallow bad.

Did Aunt Maleficient win?
Oh, let's not rehash it then

7:43 PM
@Marshmallow no, but there were tantrums
It's okay. I can rant ;)

Don't let me stop you

Probably not going to be fun though

@Tinkeringbell In a week to two weeks

So let's share some better news
I'm probably going to be buying an apartment
@Marshmallow that sounds surviveable

@Tinkeringbell Naaaah. What else do we have to rant about? Humid hot hell?
I frigging hate summer.

7:46 PM
@Marshmallow it's hot, but not that humid

I repeat that sentence more often than "I frigging hate winter" in winter

I don't hate summer. But this is a bit too much for me ;)

What do they call those in English? Coldish people?
Cool people 😎

I'm just glad there's no snow. Can you imagine having to shovel snow in these temperatures?!

Yay! Inspections today for solar installation!

7:48 PM
@fbueckert Oh. Final boss?

Boo. The solar company completely missed the inspection, even though they said they'd be here

@fbueckert Yeah, that sounds way more fun than the excellent joke I just made :P

Or did you defeat him and are waiting for the end game rewards

So I'm not at all impressed. Again.

@fbueckert Whoa, barely the beginning of the story then. Where the final boss comes and insults your intelligence, ancestors and survival skills and runs away.

7:49 PM
Well, close to the end.
Its all installed, just need to pass inspections, and we can start using it.

> MWAHAHA, PUNY MORTAL! WE'VE GOT YOUR WIFE SISTER SOLAR PANELS. CYA

But the amount of aggravation I've had to go through has ensured I'm never ever recommending anyone use them.

Why, just recommend them to people you don't like.
BTW Tink I was gonna respond to a message of yours but I got carried away and don't remember what so you can just assume I responded to a message of yours.

@Marshmallow It's okay. I'll go back to laying in front of the fan looking at cartoons on Imgur ;)

@Tinkeringbell Meh. Imgur left a bad taste in my mouth after their uneducated racist remarks about Muslims back when the IS was a hot topic.

7:55 PM
I wanna go back inside, but I don't trust these idiots to finish the job.

Haha that's what dad says whenever some folks are mending something at home.
Wait.

So I'm sitting in the shade, waiting for the second inspection to finish.
At least they made that one.

@Marshmallow Imgur has a few issues.

Yeah I read your post.
Either until right in the middle, or fully.
I don't remember.

@Marshmallow :/ I found a nice person that posted a lot of cartoons. Most of them are Funny. I usually stay out of comment sections ;)

7:58 PM
One time they upvote/show support/whatever to some really nice fellow saving lives or something. You think, whoa, some community they got there! The next, some misogynistic A-hole's meme filled post makes it to the front page swiftly. Like WTH.

@Tinkeringbell Inyourfacecake?
@Marshmallow Recently, I think it's taken more of a turn for the better, mostly due to the influence of one user

@Tinkeringbell Haha I usually try to follow that rule too, but sometimes the post itself has a speech to make.
@Mithrandir Jon Skeet?

@Mithrandir JKBenton

@Tinkeringbell What are they about? I might check them out on mobile which has a working VPN

@Marshmallow Ehh. All sorts of things, mostly just lame punny stuff but some do seem to criticize current society too.

8:02 PM
It was early 2018 that they introduced this new censoring mechanism that detected and rendered most of the VPNs unusable. It was brutal times.
@Tinkeringbell You can say the current society is electric.
— Magisch
I didn't make that pun. I deny any involvement

XD
Took me three reads.

@Marshmallow Ouch

8:19 PM
@fbueckert Did it shock you?

With great power comes great resistance, assuming constant voltage

Okay, that's enough puns for me.
You're all liable to break my brain, and it's broken enough, thank you. :P

> How many Lojban speakers does it take to change a broken light bulb?

> Just one, but first you have to explain to them what kind of bulb emits broken light.

3 hours later…
11:30 PM
@Mithrandir yes?
@Marshmallow no, it's totally called Avengence
