It's late afternoon here

Do you all like my new pet?

@Shog9 Connected to each other only slightly, but due to my decades of computer experience we could detect our bits being frobbed. My prior thread with the other user is here: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/7532564#7532564 --- This user's suspension on Physics.SE will end soon enough, but they are suspended on four sites simultaneously. Their excellent idea of reading and not writing for a
while might work out very well.

@ShadowWizard Ehh. Take a closer look at the pictures. It has some kind of edge that a dishwasher isn't going to keep clean nicely. It'll be a place where coffee/tea stains heap up ...

@Shadow Why did you clear another user's reopen vote here?

To clear the old possible duplicate thingy?
/shrug

@Asuna Yes, I'd understand that one would want to change an old form of duplicate closure to the new form. This is not what I'm asking about. What I'm asking about is Shadow's decision to reopen and immediately re-close a question which had already been voted for reopening by another user. This effectively clears the reopen vote and forces a unilateral decision.
Also, Shadow has in the past cleared close votes by immediately closing and re-opening questions with active close votes, so I'm wondering if he did the same here.
The consensus is that users shouldn't use the dupehammer to clear others' votes.

8:32 AM
@Tinkeringbell oh... so this falls under same category as:
yesterday, by Shadow Wizard
@Magisch like most things designed only for very rich people, e.g. big gold watches.
I mean... that cup cost a ton... so obviously it's not meant to really be used.... lol

@ShadowWizard Oh, you can use it... just be prepared to eventually spend a few days scrubbing and eventually throwing it away because it's so gross :P
Perhaps you could use it as a soup mug. Spoon out the soup, and be careful to not get anything stuck underneath the edge :P

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog I didn't clear the vote on purpose, I cleaned up the old messy dupe-close mechanism which left the "possible duplicate" text in the body of the question. I do it whenever seeing question closed in the old style and can hammer it.
If you think it's not a dupe and already used your reopen vote, you can still flag.
@Asuna exactly! :)

@ShadowWizard True, and as I said, I'm not raising an issue with the mere fact that you are changing an older-style closure to the newer style. But IMO if there are one or more active reopen votes, you should let it go in the meantime. There's no particular hurry in changing the form of closure.
If there are no pending reopen votes, go right ahead :)

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog no hurry, but since I don't go looking for them, it will stay messy for good if I don't do it when seeing it.

@ShadowWizard Just set an alarm for four days later, when the reopen vote will have aged if no one else had voted.
But in case the community were to decide it should be reopened, please don't clear the reopen vote.

8:41 AM
Meh. I don't see the problem. It was already reviewed as leave closed, so unless loads of people watch that question each day that reopen vote would've aged away anyways.
Don't turn mosquitoes into elephants...

@Tinkeringbell You can't reasonably expect non-mods to be aware of review tasks.
When in doubt, assume it's being reviewed.
Plus a "leave closed" review doesn't preclude external voting from reopening the question

@ShadowWizard \o/

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog I was one step ahead of you there in my previous remark, please read it.

While I do like systematic process, being too systematic doesn't work on this Earth

@Tinkeringbell There was recently a question that was almost entirely voted for reopening purely through external votes. Plus, one of my questions over on IPS got closed despite a "Leave Open" outcome in the CV queue. So loads of people do indeed watch questions from the homepage.
I often pay close attention to the review tasks of questions I VTC or VTR, and if the reviewers aren't vetting the question properly and giving the "wrong" review, I often go seek out external votes.

8:48 AM
@Bookends you're doing it wrong

@Tinkeringbell If the review was active and people were voting for reopening, would you say the same thing?

@Asuna beep Command or filename not found beep

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Nope, I would've told you to raise a flag and let mods handle it if people actually are going around invalidating reopen votes.
But even in the case of closing again as a different duplicate, that's not a big deal: The question is reopened because it wasn't a dupe of X, and closed because it is a dupe of Y. Shadow doesn't have a gold badge for nothing.

@Bookends [ ZoeBot ] nice try. You need some updates

Woah... sleepy at work...

@Bookends Where you at? In some locations that's a good thing, and you can even take naps because it shows how hard you work (according to the internet)

@Tinkeringbell A mattress testing factory?

> In Japan, the practice of napping in public, called inemuri (居眠り, lit. "present while sleeping"), may occur in work meetings or classes. Brigitte Steger, a scholar who focuses on Japanese culture, writes that sleeping at work is considered a sign of dedication to the job, such that one has stayed up late doing work or worked to the point of complete exhaustion, and may therefore be excusable.

10:44 AM
@Tinkeringbell and the rest of the world call them Microsleep

@Derpy From what I know, this is more about actual naps than microsleeps

@Tinkeringbell don't know... the description I got from multiple google result pages seem very close to sleep deprivation symptoms
Falling asleep almost instantaneously for about 30 seconds, then resuming working like nothing happened.
seems like a sleep deprivation induced black-out to me, but I don't know.
maybe the art is triggering these on-demand

I have that from time to time
You barely notice you were out

Yeah and the pictures I see with articles about inemuri show people thoroughly keeled over and napping :P

@Tinkeringbell remember. They also invented this...

10:56 AM
Hahaha that's fun :) I could use one of those on the train! :P

@Tinkeringbell It reads "Please, wake me when we are at .... station, thanks"
A single image that shows how crazy and nice Japan can be at the same time

@Derpy That'll work :P I think I once read a page of Donald Duck on that: He goes on the train with such a sign, everyone thinks he's really clever, and the next week everyone is asleep with such a sign and there's no-one left to wake anyone up :P

nice, because in most other countries people seeing you asleep would just laugh when you miss your station (or actively try to get you to miss it...)
crazy, because humans shouldn't need to do that.

and the person is sitting beside you, and handsome/pretty

@Derpy Over here, it's your responsibility to be awake when you're at the station. Meaning you just put an alarm on your cellphone for in case you fall asleep

11:01 AM
(have I woken up...)

Handsome people on public transport? That never happens here.

Heh, I was on a train y'day. Don't insult me ...

I was on a train yesterday too :P

At least two handsome people then

Perhaps it's depending on the kind of train?
@rene You and the machinist? :P

11:04 AM
No, you and me, on different trains ...

@Tinkeringbell oh, the wonderful difference between having to and feeling good with doing something. I can book you an appointment for an on field course with this yellow pony I happen to know....

@Derpy It's quite dangerous to wake sleeping people ;)
So if I wanted to do a good deed, I'd let them sleep and not complain about the fact that I can't have a seat because they have their bag on a seat, or wake them up because they're snoring in a silence carriage ;)

the only long distance between 2 stations;
fallen asleep in the middle;
wake up at the end of the route;
25 stations passed;
or just... awaken by the train guard on the last stop ;_;

@Tinkeringbell yes, thanks

@nitsua60 moot, it's a one time dice. Once thrown it breaks. ;)

1:56 PM
how can you know the value then!?

@rene Me neither but I know this doesn't look to be geography related

Yeah, it might more be related to the ISP involved. I'm on XS4all (KPN basically) at the moment.

I would try enabling my VPN but it seems as if my ISP here blocks VPNs
@sonic_gparyani Yep - it's on my list for today, we're looking at one server behaving oddly.
@rene @Tinkeringbell FYI ^^
@Shadow I guess the user ID in my link gave away the association between my SE and Twitter accounts

@rene IIRC I'm on Telfort.

Okay, I tried a different way of connecting through my VPN, and I tried a Dutch IP, and it still worked. Either that or it didn't connect properly...

@Bookends you can't! :D

@Yahav32498041 @sonic_gparyani It's not regional - it was a 1 in 9 chance. It should be fixed now - I'm writing a meta response :)

@Shog9 I noticed you reopened this question. Does this mean that questions about SmokeDetector are indeed on-topic for MSE?
I thought they wouldn't be since there's nothing for the SE team to respond to since Smokey is entirely maintained by the community, and questions about it and other community-maintained apps are marked off-topic.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog share your thoughts here meta.stackexchange.com/questions/323893/… and stop bothering CM's

@rene I'm asking him about a specific action he took. Is that not OK?

No, that isn't by default OK.
specially now that someone started an MSE discussion on it already
The opinion of the CM might be of less importance in that case if the community rules differently.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog not Shog, but IMO it is on topic since it's directly related to chat.
And people around here are familiar enough to answer questions related to it.

@ShadowWizard No, it's not really; read it carefully. It's about the contents of a specific chat message, which of course SE can't control.

I'm not wild about holding discussions that directly affect these sites off-site.

If Smokey was created by some external company and used by SE as third party tool then I'd agree questions about it might be off topic, but that's not the case. It's created and maintained by SE users.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog no. It's about why those contents were detected as possible spam.
And if the bot goes out of control and have too many false positives, SE can ban it.

Here's an analogous situation: Stacks is a design framework developed by the SO team and increasingly used on these sites. It has its own project page, bugs database, etc. If you find a bug on the sites that's caused by Stacks, feel free to report that on meta - you shouldn't feel that you can't talk about it here just because it happens to have its own project.

4:04 PM
So it's in SE control.

@Shog9 SE owns and controls Stacks, so questions about it can reasonably receive official responses from SE. Whereas only a few types of questions about community projects can reasonably be responded to by the SE team; this isn't one of those.

If you wanna join the SmokeDetector project & chat about its architecture somewhere off-site, go for it. But if you're just asking a question about its behavior as it affects the sites here, do it wherever is obvious.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog wrong.
Meta is not just for employees to respond to stuff
good lord, how many questions about userscripts are floating around?

My threshold for most questions' on-topic-ness is, if it can theoretically reasonably receive an official response from SE, it's on-topic.
@Shog9 Didn't assert that.

that's a terrible heuristic
drop that heuristic like a hot rock

Freelancing has something in common with Startups and Productivity.

The folks who can contribute useful information are mostly out there putting that information to work instead of hanging out on Q&A sites?
No worries. We'll just change the name to Free Lansing and position it as a resource for folks locked in the ice in Iowa.

@Shog9 Man, you guys and snow.
We just came out of a -50 cold snap.

...Snow worries...

It's also a Canadian pastime to make light of others problems with cold.

Meh. It can't be that bad?
I mean, you can always make something happen...
(besides wrestling a moose)

Well, there is now.
The internet and things like furnaces ensure we don't have to endure the cold too much if we don't want to.

Man is quickly becoming a weaker species ;)

But it's still a pastime to make fun of all you southerners. :P

Actually... lemme check.

I suppose some of it would depend where in Canada.

And I live even higher than the bottom of the Netherlands! :P

Woo!
I guess you're not a southerner, then. :P

But sea climate for the win, temps are a lot better here in winter ;)

No doubt.

So just to overdo it: This station is at the same circle of latitude as Calgary. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/51st_parallel_north and it's Dutch counterpart)

We'll be lucky if all the snow melts by May.
Just in time for spring!

I think I'll stick with spring in February/March :)

Aww. But think of all the epic forts and snow sculptures you can make!

You see that, @Servy ? That's what happened today. Neither you nor shadow gets to argue that re-closing a question doesn't make you responsible for its closure because it happened to be closed for the same reason years in the past; you do the action, that action is on you.
If you can't take responsibility for your own actions, then do not act.
I don't think that is a lot to ask.
I got pinged about that question today because of something I wrote years ago. I took responsibility for it because of something I said.
I didn't close it. Not today, not 7 years ago. But I still took responsibility.

@Shog9 I'm pinging you because of something you wrote years ago that you took responsibility for.

8:38 PM
If you can't handle standing behind your actions, much less your words... Then leave. Last thing we need around here is more folks making messes they won't clean up.
Same goes for you, @ShadowWizard
I'm sick of this shit

I don't associate Lansing with Iowa...
Lansing is the capital of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is mostly in Ingham County, although portions of the city extend west into Eaton County and north into Clinton County. The 2010 Census placed the city's population at 114,297, making it the fifth largest city in Michigan. The population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was 464,036, while the even larger Combined Statistical Area (CSA) population, which includes Shiawassee County, was 534,684. It was named the new state capital of Michigan in 1847, ten years after Michigan became a state. The Lansing metropolitan area, colloquially...
