A: What are the criteria for posts to be included in "Top network posts" on new profile page?

SomewhatshA.t's answer has pretty much nailed it, and the summary from the blog itself is the key: And if you’re active on multiple communities, your1 best stuff2 from those sites3 will show in the sidebar, too. Numbering is added to clarify the point The specific criteria are: Not community wik...

at least that's based on my finding

5 hours later…
6:16 AM
whoa.... so much smoke here...
@Dukeling makes sense, but I would expect it to exclude duplicates, since they are on topic. You have examples to share?

breathing more easily now

@ShadowWizard cleared. I might have missed a few:) I don't have the userscript for clearing them out on this PC

@JourneymanGeek looking fine, can't see any smoke here now. :)
IMO, no need to hunt down old smoke, just having the front chat page clean is enough.

6:33 AM
now smoking

pouring water over @Somewhat's cigar

smoke is a sign of incomplete combustion
we need more oxygen.
BURN CLEANLY MY DEARIES! BURN CLEANLY! (But not bright, cause that's a sign there's carbon)

And green fire?

From green lantern?

6:59 AM

I forgot to say good morning to this room! HI :D

Gutten morgen! (I think? ;))

@ShadowWizard Ehhh... I don't know. Gutten is German ;)
I don't know if morgen is German too :P
I know Guten Tag and Goedemorgen

7:14 AM
Sounds German!

It apparently is correct too :) But it's Guten, not Gutten :P

Selamat Pagi!

@ShadowWizard Question for you :P What's the correct reply to being greeted with Shalom?

But "guten" sounds like "ga-ten", hence the additional "t". :)

In German, you pronounce the spelling(?) as-is

7:16 AM
@ShadowWizard Guten... hmmm the closed I think in English would be goo-ten(like the number 10)

@Tinkeringbell either another "Shalom", or you can say "uvra-ha" which means "and a blessing to you too", kind of.. but better just reply with "Shalom to you too", more simple. :D

@ShadowWizard Heh... I did 'jij ook goedemorgen' (Good morning to you too :P)
Knew that was off :P

@Tinkeringbell yeah but "goo" isn't really good, think it means something sticky. lol
So 10 sticky things aren't a good morning welcome message.... ;)
@Tinkeringbell well, Shalom isn't good morning, it's just "hello"
And also "peace", depends on context.

@ShadowWizard Yep, that's what I found on googling it's meaning

(same exact word with two different meaning)

7:21 AM
And why I thought saying 'good morning' might not have been the best reply :P

@ShadowWizard oh, iirc copper sulphate. Or arsenic

@Tinkeringbell correct! :D
@JourneymanGeek cool... guess you got some? :P

Ah well, I'm sure no offense was taken, I'll just do better next time ;)

We used to sell this stuff at the garden center.

7:23 AM
@Tinkeringbell wait, you actually said that to someone in response to "shalom"? lol

@ShadowWizard Well, I entered the office, and there's this ... walk of shame ... if you're late where you just say hello/good morning 10 times to different people that are already there

That's... actually embarrassing to me :(

One of them (that usually just speaks Dutch, btw) was too fast for slow morning me, and made a pre-emptive strike of saying Shalom to which I replied 'Ook goedemorgen' :P
@Somewhat Not late as in too late. Just late as in 'there's already a load of people there'

@Tinkeringbell hehe lol... wonder what made him say "shalom"?

@ShadowWizard Not quite awake yet? :P
I did suspect he knew Hebrew, he wears a quite flashy ring with what looks like a Hebrew inscription.

7:29 AM
You can switch the office to be open space, then you can say good morning one single time. ;)
(just say it loud enough so everyone can hear!)

@ShadowWizard It is open office :P But that's the problem, I don't want to shout and say good morning to those people that haven't earned it too! :P

@Tinkeringbell interesting, take a picture sometime and let me see? :)
@Tinkeringbell so you just say it in person to those you favor? :D

@ShadowWizard To those I know :P

heh... posting code in a comment instead of in the question when just posting the question (i.e. not even asked to show the code) is new level of... something. :/

More specifically, to those with whom it is important to have a good professional relationship :P

7:34 AM
It's cruel for the others! :D

@ShadowWizard No one ever said I wasn't cruel

@ShadowWizard My top network post... workplace.stackexchange.com/a/95062/8234

@Tinkeringbell lol
@Dukeling huh... not really fair and logical then. Surely there's already MSE feature request asking to change this behavior? (too lazy to search)

7:51 AM
@Tinkeringbell My desk is right at the back of the office. I need to walk past everyone else.

@Dukeling Back of the office is the nicest spot :) Less foot traffic and no people peeking at your screen :D
If you can manage to arrive as the first person there, it's perfect!

First? That's crazy talk.

No one ever said I wasn't crazy either ;P
I'm not a morning person, but I do wake up early. I tend to just go with it, as that means I have more free time in the evenings ;)

I like starting work early, but waking up early is the problem.
I can easily wake up early if I go to bed at like 9 PM, but that's just crazy.

8:06 AM
@Dukeling 9PM is a little early, but most nights I'm in bed at 10.

Also, I'm working with people who start their day at around 4 PM our time, so it would be a bit pointless to come in too early.

Ah... that's a good reason to sleep in :P

@ShadowWizard gone

@ShadowWizard to be fair, I can't say I "use" twitter.
I just sometime remember to have a look at some "nonsense IT stuff" accounts

8:32 AM
@Bart with the wind? ;)
@Derpy so you don't even have account?

@ShadowWizard nope

I should probably try the Twitter thing at some point. I sometimes have thoughts.

@Dukeling Stupid thing is, I don't use the Twitter thing for thoughts. My thoughts are longer than 280 characters :P

Just post the TLDR (1/1467215689137589169823)

@Dukeling TLDR: thoughts don't fit in 280 characters :P
I'll keep Twitter for funny pictures, showing off my crochet and short rants ;)

8:47 AM
Or just post multiple messages per thought. That seems to be the "in" thing now. (2/1467215689137589169823)

Oh... now I'm going to say that you won't be able to keep that up until you hit 1467215689137589169823/1467215689137589169823 :P

TLDR: it's too long (1467215689137589169824/1467215689137589169823)

@Dukeling question is, you want others to know your thoughts? Will you withstand posting something and get 0 Likes?

Well, I didn't say which function I was using, did I? (7/1467215689137589169823)

But on the note of putting thoughts online... my favorite news site is doing good. The whole discussion about Black Pete is starting again. Usually, you can react on news articles. This year, they're disabling the reactions on all those posts, because the reactions don't add any new insights any more, only create a 'us vs. them' mentality.
They instead created one massive posts for a day, that people can react on, and reactions are being tied to some rules to make them constructive. I think it's the first time I actually am reading some nuances!
@Dukeling Ugh, random incrementing :P

8:54 AM
@Tinkeringbell yeah same here. My favorite local news site disabled the Facebook comments plug-in.

@Tinkeringbell It's not random. (121/1467215689137589169823)

@ShadowWizard It's not like I just like the fact that notifications are turned off. It's the fact that they managed to start something productive and nuanced instead!

But actually I'm done now. (1467215689137589169823/1467215689137589169823)

If it were just turned off, I'd probably be dispapointed.
@Dukeling Cheater.

@Tinkeringbell Who's cheating? It's A(m,4)-4

and I thought "what is that strange chord..."

@ShadowWizard I created an account at some point, but then I realised that it would be too much effort to get followers.

Other than that, no idea

Ah, it's because it's older than 7 days
And the other one is probably already in a queue
Anyway, focus Bart, you decided to refactor a huge chunk of your platform.

9:59 AM
Just add a Refactor class with a method OldStuff and call it a day.

:D I wish.
And I already ripped out large chunks of someone else's code, to replace it with something faster and better. But it somehow always feels bad doing that to someone else's code.

@Bart Refactoring is fun. Especially if you decide to make one super method called 'run_test'... only to realise that of course the test framework would have such a method as well, and you've now overriden that.
'Always name your method for what it does' doesn't always work :P

That's why I never write tests.

@Bart I copy-paste mine.
Anyway. We now have a method called 'my_super_special_implementation_of_run_test'
Let's see if that makes it through review XD

Take the time, go do fun stuff... (game? read? sleep?)

my doc did put the fear of god into me. If this double infection had proliferated to the lungs I could be 100% dead by now

@Magisch He was kinda right to do that. It's a bit ... silly ... to wait 2? 3? days to go to a doctor if you have a high fever and already know it may be tonsillitis....

@Tinkeringbell I never go to the doctor and I'm still fine (or at least not dead yet).

1:04 PM
@Dukeling I'm not a big 'run to the doctor' person myself... but I do realise I don't have run the same risks as someone from the medieval period did :P
So, I've had all my shots, and if something is infected I go to the doctor to have it treated.

I'll go to the doctor if it doesn't seem like it will heal by itself.

@Dukeling That too.

I was kinda banking on it going away on its own

I could use some help understanding when to use my close vote privileges...
meta.stackexchange.com/q/316364/369802 is getting closed as a dupe now, but I thought asking for the correct site to post your question was okay? I also don't really see how that makes the two duplicates, as one is discussing having such sites and the other is asking if there is a good site to post a certain question... :/

Yeah that doesn't look like a dupe

AFAIK, "design choices" is usually subjective... MSOers and Programmers-ers have been used to think like this

@Somewhat True, but if there is no site, the answer would be 'there's no site to ask this, see this (what's now being used a dupe target) for why..'

@Tinkeringbell See the last section of this. tl;dr the dupe-closing policy on MSE is much broader and often allows for closures where most Q&A sites don't

1:39 PM
not 'you're asking this'

> For instance, a question can be closed as a duplicate of another question that is merely related. One example of this is a question that is already addressed in a small part of another question (e.g. an question)

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog So how is 'where can I ask about design choices made in the Haskell programming language' answered there?
I just don't see it.
Where's the fourth place OP could ask, that that accepted answer seems to suggest should be the place to ask such questions?

@Tinkeringbell "Where can I ask about X" is pretty much a duplicate of "Can we have a site for X". But those specific questions aren't that close of a match. Depending on what they mean by "design choices" and how their question is asked, it could be on topic on SO, Programmers or Code Review (or none of them).

@Dukeling I was thinking software engineering as on-topic possibility too, but I can't see the original question...

@Tinkeringbell (Programmers = Software Engineering, and yes, they mention "design" explicitly as on topic)

1:49 PM
@Dukeling Ah ... I did know that somewhere. I'm really new here! :P

I think they got merged at some point or something.

"design choices made in the Haskell language" is about creator's intent, and AFAIK is off-topic, unless it's answered by the creator itself

I wouldn't know. It would have been before my time.

@SonictheInclusiveWerehog Exactly 1 ;)

@Tinkeringbell In my home state of California you'd pay about $300 for the required 6 hours of training ($50 per hour)
