4:00 PM
@drachenstern Well, the scripts do <script> injection, so no GM native functions are used

@YiJiang s/@Josh/@drachenstern/g

Although the small favicon notification one doesn't, because it's simple enough

@Josh I figured that ;)

ok just making sure :-)

A bit of shame really, because the GM XMLHTTPRequest can do X-domain magic, which is quite cool

4:01 PM
Also helps to increase my chat volume... soon I will surpass Jeff and then I will rule the WORLD!!! Or, something slightly smaller than the world... OK. maybe it just makes me exceedingly lame, who knows...

@Josh I'm trying valiantly to join you
check my position ;)
By tonight I should (lame, I know) be in the top 8

@drachenstern Indeed you are, congrats on being the #4 non-employee user!

:D
I let YiJiang have the title for about an hour yesterday ;)

@drachenstern boy do I have him fooled!

Ugh, I look like crap...damn you software stress! shakes fist

4:11 PM
@RebeccaChernoff lol, I thought you would get a kick out of it nonetheless ;)
@TimStone sleep. It does a body good.

I have a software release, two conferences calls, and a server to setup today. No time :P

Hang in there @Tim, hang in there!
We've all had days like that. You'll make it through!

Heh, thanks. And I hope so :P

Indeed we have. I probably didn't make it through my last one tho ... still checking up on that one ;)

Interesing. He just pulled me into a meeting. Explained why he let her go, and said he wants me to step into a global role (head IT for the entire 3 offices), but using contracters instead of employees. This is weird and stupid, but we'll see. He fires the important person, and attempts to promote me. It's weird...

4:16 PM
@ircmaxell hire her back as a contractor

Welcome to the world of IT @ircmaxell ;-)

he's likely trying to do this for monetary purposes

@drachenstern if this won't cause issues with his boss...

@Josh she's a contractor, it's what he wanted ...
can't refuse good help with a proven track record, if you do, you're killing yourself

@drachenstern unless the boss had a beef with her specifically
@drachenstern wouldn't be the first time I've heard of stupid management decisions ;-)

4:18 PM
Then I would expect @ircmaxell to know, being her boss
@Josh true

I would too

True
I am so glad we all agree! ;-)

which is what pisses me off. He never even asked me about her at all. But we'll see. He wants to fly me to the UK next week to talk. I think I'm going to go, and then see how that goes prior to putting my resume out there...

Were you giving it to her on the side?

lol. No

4:20 PM
@ircmaxell holy cow, your boss is on the other side of the pond from you? that sucks

yes
It's fubar all together...

@Fosco HAHA I was thinking that but didn't dare say it :-)

How lame. Chromium's Firebug rip-off doesn't allow editing, huh?

Joe's candidation on SuperUser is pretty erm.
@GeorgeMarian What? It does.
(pretty lame to call it a rip-off, too)

heh, as if
It looks exactly like Firebug.
Ok, so how do I edit the CSS with it?

4:26 PM
I guess that if they could've copy pasted the actual source, they would've. That's pretty much the whole point of open source, right?
Double click on the relevant spot.

And, what if I need add a property?

Double click on the closing brace.

Ah, less then obvious, but it works. Thanks.

If you need to add a rule I'm afraid you can't.
If it would've been "more obvious" to add a semicolon then a new property at the end of another property, you can do that too.

@badp that's what I do, I edit the last tag and hit semicolon or tab

4:29 PM
@badp I was expecting an option on the context menu.

@GeorgeMarian The DOM list does that.

@badp Hey, look at that.

Speaking of Firefox I'm not sure why I can't open the inspector

@badp Which one?

@YiJiang Right click → Inspect element

4:34 PM
The DOM inspector was removed in version 3 into a separate add-on, most people use Firebug anyway

The Col is at it again

A: Protect against SQL injection

alexnYou should use mysql_real_escape_string for escaping all string input parameters in a query. and use type casting to sanitize numeric parameters and use whitelisting to sanitize identifiers. Go figure In the referenced PHP page, there is an example of a sql injection in a login form. A better s...

@YiJiang oh. heh. "Firebug is incompatible with Minefield 4.0b10pre"

You're on Firefox nightlies, eh?
Don't usually use dev versions because add-on developers can't usually keep up

yeah, because the Chromium nightly broke :)

@badp Why can't you just reinstall

4:37 PM
$ chromium-browser
[7136:7147:23507232965:FATAL:external_pref_extension_loader.cc(63)] Check failed: PathService::Get(base_path_key_, &base_path_).
Aborted

Or downgrade to the beta channel?

@YiJiang Tomorrow's build will be fixed.
although I guess I could forbid this very specific version from apt
downgrades to version 8

Can an individual site have a VtC that is not a standard from the other sites?

@drachenstern SuperUser has (had?) Gaming as a close reason.

nm, NARQ will cover it
@badp but was that pre SE2.0?

4:40 PM
@drachenstern no, definitely was like that during the Gaming beta
dunno if it's still in place.

thanks

how cute, Chromium detected the profile comes from a future version
and this version lets me change the default Sans Serif font too!
take that, Arial!

Thank god :P

(and take that too, Firefox and your rendering bugs)

@badp Erhm... you couldn't change it before than? :|

4:43 PM
Firefox has this really obscure request bug, hrm.

@drach. mosheberman.com/wordpress/?p=284 safari and extensions

@badp What did you expect from nightlies? :P

@YiJiang Chromium 8 has a tabbed dialog preference panel that exposes this setting. Chromium 10 has a web based dialog page that doesn't.
@YiJiang Both usually have very stable nightlies.

assassinates Firefox

sample screenshot of the web based preferences panel. Yes, the inspector works there.

4:48 PM
Does pinging work if you punctuation at the end if it's a shortened name?

@Moshe Should work

Like @Mosh. Instead of @Mosh
Ok.

Q: Allowing Ctrl+k in comments

JP19I often use `keyword` (quotes around keywords) to highlight some keyword or phrase in comments. While the backticks work, the shortcut Ctrl+K does not work in comments. Can we allow that please? I somehow find a double click on the word (or selecting a phrase with mouse) and Ctrl+K easier th...

@YiJiang @RebeccaChernoff I don't keep up with your userscript shenanigans, do you support these suggestions?

We do not.

@PopularDemand The userscripts? No

Hahah, WTF?

@TimStone Seconded. What... in the world?

I want to go outside and build one today...

how do I put a tag inline in a comment?

Tag links aren't supported in comments, I don't think.

4:56 PM
@mosh. I am pinging you
@TimStone thanks, I didn't think so

@drachenstern The @Mosh pit?

@Josh he wanted to know if punctuation intereferred
@ircmaxell I do too!!!
Question tho, does it need moar jquery?

@drachenstern Does capitalization matter?
@Drachenstern will; you see this?

no it doesn't

oh maybe you will

4:58 PM
case insensitive
Unless Marc changed something, he made a point about that awhile ago, because the username is case insensitive

@DrAcHeNsTeRn ThAnKs DiDnT kNoW tHaT!

Joor welcum

ok I am off to lunch, catch you all later

Ok, need a soda, then need to bang out about 3 hours of work in thirty minutes

@drachenstern good luck with that! ;-)
@Tim I am sending you positive vibes to get through a crazy day :-)

5:00 PM
Hahah, thanks! ;)
I am much appreciative. :)

It's not much but sometimes it helps to know total strangers on the internet are cheering for you

@Josh J! O! S! H! JOSH! JOSH! JOSH!
(← not actually a Jets fan)

You know what's really cool? Firefox deciding it doesn't feel like letting you close certain tabs.

5:16 PM
How was the moderation nominee reputation requirement chosen?

On SO, it's the requirement is currently 11,538 reputation to nominate yourself, and may change. Seems pretty random.
Tagged: discussion moderator-nomination by Corey on meta.stackoverflow.com
aw, that was a kind of interesting question
now deleted

@badp It's a dupe. The min of the 30 current nominees' reputation, simple

@PopularDemand Good. If you were I might have had to kill you, after the Jets creamed the Patriots last Sunday ;-)
I was supposed to go get lunch but got caught up on /review instead...
When there's a low quality post which is now [closed], how should I handle? Do I flag for removal..?

@YiJiang oh, okay. Last time I checked it seemed pretty random

@Josh Sure, why not?

@Josh Good point! I must delete that question.
hah! Removed those 20 reps in excess of the cap.
Justice prevails!

5:25 PM
@YiJiang OK, just making sure

So who in here is a mathy person?

I used to be
Wait why am I still here? I'm supposed to be eating

Did you see the latest on /.?
Why are you still here? You should be at lunch!

@drachenstern I stopped reading slashdot when I found chat, I figure I'll rely on you guys to give me news instead XD

Why would a nomination be all grayed out?

5:33 PM
Apparently there may be 1 solution to P=NP
@Fosco fell below the point threshhold

@drachenstern interesting. Mostly above my head, but interesting :-D

@drachenstern the rep threshhold? he has 22k and beneath him someone with 15k is not grayed out.

Then he likely withdrew

ah, kthx

Yeah, perhaps in light of Will's comment :P

5:39 PM
@drach yes, I did want to know about pings and punctuation. Did you ask about Safari and userscripts?

blah

@Moshe and I saw your link

shameless plug
@drach Did you find it useful?

If you're following the #stackoverflow election stuff, this page is indispensible: http://bit.ly/eoURAK

5:48 PM
@YiJiang excellent work (except for the recent activity bit, which is still empty)

@badp Working on it man, it was working just now, but I broke it again

@YiJiang At least there's should be a cute QA girl coming to your cubicle, right? :P

@badp Hehehe...

lol

The tagged questions pages don't seem to work for me on StackOverflow

5:53 PM
And for the record, she wasn't cute.

@ircmaxell That was actually a reference to an older message
2 days ago, by Michael Mrozek
I learned that when I cripple the build, the cute QA girl comes and talks to me. Not a great sign for our build stability

Works fine for me...

5:54 PM
lol. Nice

(11 stars. Ha!)

@ircmaxwell I only see 1 question tagged "aop"

I see 430
And it's ircmaxell.

@DustyCampbell Check which tab you're on

no w
I can't stand how people keep wanting to put a w in there. It's a pet peave of mine... But whatever...
Wait, @Dusty: are you on the "Featured" tab? Switch to the newest and tell me how many you see

5:56 PM
@ircmaxell @YiJiang yep my bad
I was on the featured tab

heehehe
easy mistake.

Sorry, thanks

@YiJiang The tooltips on the activity times are new Date(timestamp).toString() by the way. :P

@TimStone Already corrected

:)

6:01 PM
hey @YiJiang what's up with those comment timestamps on the spreadsheet?

via @ivo:

@drachenstern Uh where?

on the recent activity

Oh, lol. I think I know why...

damn you laws of the universe ... I have four mods I want to see win for sure ...

6:05 PM
S1 star the photo pls.
The bug report pic.

The server timestamp is in seconds, while JavaScript expect timestamp in miliseconds, so the two times are off by 1000x

Ahhhh

6:17 PM
/headdesk
So much for "customer service."

@GeorgeMarian Indeed. Tell us what happened

yes

I placed an order with Newegg, but it was placed on hold for address verification. (I hadn't realized that my bank had finally applied the change of address I requested back in September.)

Wondering whether to go on systematic voting spree to get the Sportsmanship badge. I must be nearly there so it should take less than 2 days worth of votes (maybe even 1).

They kept saying that I hadn't been charged yet. However, my available balance said otherwise.
So, I was trying to find out how long it would take for the charge to be reversed if I cancelled the order.
To make a long story short, I danced around in circles with a CSR for 30 effing minutes to confirm that it could be 3-5 days before the hold was released by my bank. =/

6:21 PM
Wow, really?
call your bank and tell them to go F*(#$@# themselves

That's what she said.

Newegg rocks

lol
I haven't had many problems with newegg, though this isn't the first time things were weired.
So, yah. I just wasted 30 mins and elevated my blood pressure just to find out what I had already suspected. :)

Well, that sucks, but the upside is you have verification

is done

6:25 PM
yeah

@TimStone nice

Apparently, /q/{election-nomination-post-id} gives you error cat

As far as I'm concerned (unless someone harasses me again...), version 1.2 of my mystery software is complete. \o/

Looking at the list of recent activities by the nominees, they have a large number of (no title) posts (the no title bit was added by me), which must mean it's the nomination posts

Congrats!
Does it pass testing?

6:27 PM
@TimStone \o/

@YiJiang Hooray error cat

@ircmaxell shh

@ircmaxell Aye

lol

Hahah

6:28 PM
@TimStone It's not national talk-like-a-pirate-day for another 8 months and 30 days...

Dang, it. I just spit on my floor.

..Erm

Q: How valid is the proposed P=NP solution for the 3-SAT problem?

drachensternSource link: http://romvf.wordpress.com/2011/01/19/open-letter/ (Referred from slashdot) The fact of existence of the polynomial algorithm for 3-SAT problem leads to a conclusion that P=NP. Is there validity to this argument that there is a P=NP solution? How long till this can be verified?...

@TimStone I missed the trash can. =/

Ah

6:30 PM
What not cstheory.stackexchange.com? :P

cause NP is not cs theory
it's a math theory that's applied in CS

@mootinator I think it belongs on Cooking
I kid Seasoned Advice, I kid.

C# is a math theory that's applied in CS.
I just blew your mind.

shakes head

@drachenstern !!!

6:34 PM
da?

lol
@TimStone You're thinking of "Is chopping an onion an NP Complete problem?"

Oh right, of course.

Also, note this prediction: that question will get closed as subjective. Almost gauranteed.

What about geography.se?

Can we please flag the 'geopolitics' comment on Paul's nomination here: stackoverflow.com/election
It's one of the single most stupid thing I've ever heard someone say on this site
51/3 + 3 flags needed for it to go away, sigh...

6:37 PM
Here's the thing @drachenstern: it may never be verified...

Wouldn't you have to rewrite 3SAT in terms of the four color map theorem to ask on geography.se?

@YiJiang Great election site!

Am I just stringing words together randomly?

@YiJiang flagged
@ircmaxell yes I know that
@mootinator not yet you're not

fair enough
You gotta love how one man could f#$% up mathematics so hard with one little theory (Kurt Gödel if you didn't get the reference)...

6:40 PM
@YiJiang If we flagged comments for stupidity, the system would be overwhelmed.
2

@PopularDemand It's noise, so by my books, flag.

@PopularDemand So, I take it the "oy" action isn't under development.

Couldn't we solve this problem by telling candidates to get rid of their locations and instead say roughly what hours they're awake? I mean, what if someone works the night shift?

Well, is that the only bit the location tells?

6:42 PM
@PopularDemand Good point

Or what if they're me? They're not, but, you know.

@PopularDemand Well, since the location is already on your profile...

This is an English language site, so I personally would expect a moderator candidate to be well versed in English (not that where they come from indicates that)...

@ircmaxell I think that anyone over 10k has demonstrated that ability already

Q: Stop direct links on migrated questions

Lance RobertsI just had it happen to me that I clicked on a closed question on Super User and it immediately directed me to Stack Overflow, where it had been migrated. So I have no idea who did the migration, and if there had been edit history, I'm not sure it would have all gone over. If ALL of the informa...

6:43 PM
@TimStone That's a special case, which is handled by the special logic "don't give Tim Stone any power."
2

@drachenstern: That's a valid point...

@LanceRoberts Yeah, pretty sure that one's a dupe, one sec.
@PopularDemand Damn. Who went and added that to the code?

Didn't come up in 'related', but that misses them sometimes.

Didn't bit.ly use to be an URL shortening service?
wow, since registration opened yesterday for #mvcconf we already have 199 registered! Go sign up! http://bit.ly/mvcconfRegistration

lol

Q: Roll back the new auto-redirect on migrated questions

PekkaClicking on a migrated question now leads to an immediate header redirect to the target site. For a new user, this must be utterly confusing. They asked a question on one site, and suddenly end up on another they don't know anything about, and usually don't have an account on. The explanation wh...

This is another reason Pekka can't leave. I need his account to go look up questions I remembered he asked.

@TimStone Has he threatened to do so?

@PopularDemand In a comment on one of the SO mod nominations

and here in chat

lol

@PopularDemand Oh, you weren't here for that conversation? He's decided to make a change in professions after deciding he'd rather do something else, and as part of that he wanted to leave the temptation of SO behind.

6:49 PM
yesterday, by Pekka
I will have my SO accounts dissolved - being on page 1 is too much of a temptation to just answer one more question - but I'll create new accounts to be around on chat from time to time and (when it comes to fruition) Outdoors.SE

@TimStone Thanks, voted to close as dupe.

@TimStone No, I was out dealing with mechanics all day yesterday.
That's a shame.

@LanceRoberts No problem.
@PopularDemand Ah, that sounds rather unpleasant. And yeah, it is...I mean, certainly good from the perspective that he's willing to make a lifestyle change for the sake of happiness, but his contributions will be missed.

:| A mod just cleared the flags on the geopolitics comment - it disappeared from the list of flagged posts, and I can flag to comment again

@balpha yeah but it totally destroys his ability to help another SE startup on area51
@YiJiang huh?

6:55 PM
That comment - it just dropped off the list. A mod must have cleared the flags on it.

@YiJiang Yeah...I was on the fence about flagging it. It really is noise, but I guess not to the extent that it should have been flagged. :/

Ok, so it's official. I'm traveling to London on Tuesday...
wtf. I hate last-minute traveling...

Oh, you're in Jersey? For some reason I didn't realize that before..

lol. Yup...

If only all stupidity that is ever said in election times could just be flagged away...

6:59 PM
@balpha This is true. I am a little depressed about how many votes that comment got though, given how absurd it is, heh.
