Like the Area 51 discussion says, computer hardware goes obsolete constantly. Answers there would be outdated fairly quickly and become useless.

Keeping it updated would turn it into more of a news outlet for new hardware that's being released.

@LowerClassOverflowian I sincerely doubt that. Does it really matter if your accounting executive is an avid Facebook user or not? A company looking for the best talent shoots itself in the foot if it requires all of its employees at all levels to be heavy users of their service. It also prevents them from getting needed opinions from other perspectives.

When you retag a bunch of questions that are absurdly off-topic that would result in them being untagged, as a normal user I have no choice but to stick some tag on it. @rene Wow, you're right, I had always assumed it was moderator-only. I didn't realize it was one of those DO NOT USE THIS TAG tags that can be added but shouldn't be. Food for thought, I suppose I should go through that next time. It'd be nice if there was a rubbish-bin tag that could be used to categorize content that should be banished from the planet during these cleanups rather than retagged to be someone else's headache...

In the context of that msdnsubsciption cleanup you could have left the tag on and asking for people to cast their close votes on it. That would guarantee that others could find the questions with the same result.

@rene Yeah, I considered that too, but then the tag would continue to exist invalidating the point of the cleanup in the first place. It's quite the pickle.

(basically, I would have to wait days to finish, or a moderator would have to get involved and unilaterally handle them, in which case we really didn't accomplish much but taking up a moderator's time on something that is causing minimal harm to the site at the moment)

(when I tried my last cleanup of some google related tags, I ended up falling down the proverbial rabbit hole, and was never seen again, so I figure getting the tag clean and gone is more important than closing 40 questions which nobody looks at anyway)
