14:00
I've personally banned people expressing such views there and so have any of the other mods and admins
It's overall less tolerant of racism and sexism then anywhere else i've ever been on the 'web
@JourneymanGeek Of course it's a choice, it just requires pushing back on the idiots instead of just giving up and using something else!
Not many people are willing to do that though.
@Tinkeringbell Assuming everyone has the strength to push back
Which is understandable, because once enough idiots have claimed something as their own, there are other idiots that will assume you're an idiot too... the internet is filled with idiots, it seems.
@JourneymanGeek Lemme finish :P
14:01
No.
;)
sdc stroopwafels Tink
@Ollie No such command 'stroopwafels'.
But yeah. A lot of the internet sucks, and people with prejudices suck the most :P
It's okay. I don't need stroopwafels XD
I find that hard to believe
@JourneymanGeek Why? Still morbidly obese, I really don't need them XD
No, more a suggestion
14:05
@SmokeDetector Do they at least pay you fairly?
You're clearly sentient, so you should have to be paid
@magisch Probably paid in spam
You'd think, wouldn't you.
Smoke detector is actually being oppressed
we have a sentient AI and we force it to find spam instead of solve world hunger
Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to catch spam. Call that job satisfaction, 'cause I don't.
(^*Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* reference, for anyone who didn't catch that.)
14:10
@SmokeDetector O SmokeDetector bot, the task we have designed you to perform is this. We want you to tell us... The Answer.
"What is my purpose?" "You pass butter" "Oh my god"
@magisch shouldn't be @Tink the one to be paid fairy?
wow
that was a pun on par with my worst ones
i'm in awe
just on par? I must be tired today then.
what is this
is the meta's official chatroom
14:21
i mean
As far as anything is "official" when relating to chat... yeah.
*waves*
@Iamaperson its a chatroom alright
did you have to go take the entire starboard again @mith
Sorry.
4
@curious no time yet, go ahead. :)
@Mithical This reminds me so much of clippy
14:22
@Iamaperson That is a good question. Someday we might actually find out.
@SmokeDetector you didn't live 1000000 years yet.
Jun 23 at 17:16, by SmokeDetector
Please don't play with me too much; I'm a serious bot meant for detecting spam, not for playing around with! I've got some fun features, but please be careful not to abuse them.
@Rob groot
You saw that coming, didn't you? ;)
@Iamaperson I would say it would be accurate to say its meta's main chatroom
@JourneymanGeek ah that makes more sense
14:25
@Luuklag hey don't throw things said by adults back at them! My wife doesn't like when the kids do it. :P
I just have to ask, how does one achieve 1 mil reputation :)
throws basketball to @Journeyman
@Iamaperson Very carefully.
@Iamaperson You are Jon Skeet.
i'd argue being careful would be counter-productive
14:25
@Iamaperson easy. Get access to the database, run a query.
More seriously, be really good at something, and answer questions with great answers consistantly every single day.
@JourneymanGeek there is one other person with 1 mil reputation
mass rep appropriation is best done by brute force, aka answering as many posts as possible per day
@JourneymanGeek Time travel might help a bit too
it's not just Jon Skeet
14:26
There are two :)
@Iamaperson Are you that other guy?
Four according to SO users page.
o0
Well be one of those
@JourneymanGeek what no lol :)
I could never
reach 1 mil
if I wanted to
no, the highest rep I have is 1 k
14:27
nvm
Three others, I forgot!
there are 4
@Iamaperson Well, 30k is a nice, achievable number
good point
but 25k is better
I never expected to have 10k when starting on SO.
14:28
150 ish days to 30k
I started on MSE
@Iamaperson Worst place to start
@Iamaperson not relevant, if you're also active on SO now
true
@JourneymanGeek nah, MSE is cozy, warm, house. ;)
14:29
Reputation reflects subject matter expertise in SE, and getting good at another site is a good start.
@JourneymanGeek math stack exchange is a nice place :)
it's more chill than other places
...heh.
He thought you meant Meta SE D:
As did I...
14:29
oh
(MSE on meta means Meta)
hahahahaha
misunderstanding go brrrrr
@Iamaperson lol
Typical
I do have to say though
this chat room is much more chill
than others
@Iamaperson how did you get here then?
@Iamaperson you didn't visit Den during rush hours then. ;)
Now it's in dead mode, so no point joining, but sometimes it's very chill in there.
14:32
I mean, it's more chill than like
a lot of MSE chat rooms
(Math stack exchange)
hehe
No coffee on Math, surely.
don't say that I said this on math stack exchange chat rooms ;)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 brews a cup of Macchiato for @Iam
I prefer plain water but ok
14:33
I think it's a nature of the subject. Math people tend to be quite combative because of how passionate they are about the subject they explore so much. Programmers are similar, but math folk seem to take it to the next level.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 No such command 'water'.
yes I agree
14:33
umm well in Den there is a bot which can pee.
@Spevacus that's because math is much more vast than programming
Does it count? @Iamaperson :D
pee is mostly water technically
I see Sha's talking about his favorite subject already.
Works like a charm for users that are new here, I guess. I mean, they all return regularly after that.
@Tinkeringbell -1*all
how does SmokeDetector have actual rep on SE
14:35
53
Q: HomeKit completion block in Swift: Cannot convert the expression's type 'Void' to type 'String!'

SmokeDetectorI'm playing with HomeKit, and I'm trying to add a new home. This is my code: func addHome() { homeManager.addHomeWithName("My House", completionHandler: { (error: NSError!, home: HMHome!) in if error { NSLog("%@", error) } }...

it's literally a bot
It posted actual question.
why did a bot post a question
@Iamaperson To gain rep
It's a user-run bot, not a company-run bot, so it needs actual reputation to use chat and flag posts.
14:36
does anyone here play 8 ball pool
@Mithical not really, moderator can give it access to any room, even with 1 rep.
Folks who have the ability to host a SmokeDetector instance have access to the credentials to log into it and can take actions with it. They just typically have no reason to.
@Iamaperson What is this, 20 questions? :P
@Tinkeringbell yes
:)
Nope. It's 95,030 questions.
14:37
I'm out, that's how companies sneakily get data from you ;)
🚽
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Weeeell... It's probably best if Smokey doesn't have to rely upon "abuse" (even if it's not really abuse considering the good that Smokey does)
@KevinB thanks!
@Spevacus it's utility bot, so that won't be abuse.
@Tinkeringbell they know what your search history is ;)
14:39
@Iamaperson who?
@Mithical where are the toilets when you need them
Oh well, then they know the answer to the question of whether I play 8 ball pool too.
( and this is why I prefer libraries over Google :P)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 companies
@Iamaperson hopefully not
@Tinkeringbell Both? Both. Both is good.
14:39
I mean, I would prefer reading a book than a lot of things :)
I have like ten different Google accounts, though.
@Mithical Yeah, both is fine ;) But if you want to keep secrets: Use the library ;)
Depends on who you're keeping the secrets from...
Depends on what secrets you're hiding in the first place
i couldn't even be bothered to keep a separate work google account
much less multiple personal ones
14:44
you can now retract reopen votes :D
this is huge
@Iamaperson nah
Nice to have.
I mean
it is big
to see an update this big for once
@Iamaperson It's not bad.
it's useless
eh while it's sorta not helpful
it's helpful
14:49
if a question goes from reopen worthy to not reopen worthy, it wasn't reopen worthy to begin with
(or a poor edit simply needs to be rolled back)
@KevinB Human errors are a thing though. If I see something wrong with a post, write a comment, close vote, then the post ends up closed, and edited to address my (and possibly others') comment(s)... I might think it's fine, and vote to reopen. But I might've just as well missed something and if someone else comes along with 'I don't think it should be reopened without X' and I decide to agree? Being able to retract is a nice to have :)
in which case I'd assume retracting a RV doesn't prevent you from casting a new one later/
doesn't it?
I was under the impression that it works identically to retracting close votes
15:13
Yeah you cannot re-cast a reopen vote after retracting it.
No re-re-open votes. Gotcha.
15:53
unrelated to the subject but
we did it
we hit 1 billion rick rolls
May Rick forever roll.
@JohnDvorak Not being able to re-cast it isn't too bad for me. I'd rather be able to retract and do my part in correcting my mistake and preventing an unsuitable question from living on the site, than have people think I think it was good enough XD
as a general rule, i only cast reopen votes on posts that should be reopened
16:11
@Iamaperson Never Gonna Give you up Never Gonna let you down
@VLAZ lol
17:11
@Mithical What is it that you want to share?
I think that something that highlights how our chat platform helps build community would be a great answer.
(thumbsup)
17:34
oh FFS, people are really just starring anything I post now, aren't they... *eyes unstar button*
Do not star that ^
oh ffs
I said no!
;)
I wasn't kidding about the unstar button :P
@Mithical maybe a mod answered your plea.
...no, I mean I actually unstarred them myself... it's a room owner ability...
Oh.
17:41
Thats an example of the wholesome peepos discussed earlier
It's called :peepoLove: in our discord
( Í¡° ͜ʖ Í¡°)
More stars?
pepe is so expressive, you can have one for every occasion
@VLAZ Very nice podcast, thank you!
@Iamaperson I wonder how rick astley feels about it
His music is known by a billion people, but why?
he probably feels amazing
17:48
@curious :) It's probably one of my favourite episodes.
imagine you're rick astley
and you get rickrolled
imagine a verb is named after you and in widespread popular use
@VLAZ I had a chat with a visually impaired person during a subway ride once. We were both studying education but in different universities. She was building a small scale volcano to teach visually impaired people about volcanoes. It had never occurred to me that that's an experience not everyone can have
18:06
Is it a bug that inbox notes show the raw Commonmark ### headers?

Q: Community VP Questions: What's the best of Stack?

PhilippeContinuing with my series of questions to you - I've got one that's a bit lighter this week. We spent last week firing up our magic wand and changing things. This time, let's celebrate what exists. I want to know about your favorite contributions (questions, answers, or comments!). These can be...

anyone want to put that up on the starboard? ˆˆ
Somebody else should post a pinnable message, so I'm not hogging it too much...
meh that looks gnarly
and too late for editing
Well go be on the board then Mithical
Welp
18:43
You might need to change the text later though ;)
@Philippe, as much as I like your title, we kinda have a policy to not put tags up there... — Luuklag 50 secs ago
Hmmm did someone seriously go through that question and downvote every answer
seems too much of a coincedence of all answers having exactly 1 downvote
I don't mind, though... it brought me back to a multiple of ten. :P
I'll need two more for that xD
I can now find the jewels of SE in one post. :-D
19:10
What happened to my starboard? They just show big Ms for @Mithical now...
Oh, dear.
my resolution is too small to see anything other than pinned messages
@KevinB I have a userscript that adds a scrollbar to the starboard :)
Of course, it interacts badly with my topbar script, but it still mostly works.
@KylePollard CSS haxzzz?
the M there should be a star symbol
the post being by Mithical is just coincidence
19:15
@Luuklag 😉
@KylePollard For me they're all flagged
Look, stars are technically on fire anyway. Same thing in the end, right?
yeah your CSS is superior to mine
but then again your a dev, and I'm not xD
19:23
Problem solved.
^ seems like spam but then it was edited out.
(I just realized that there are four different userscripts visible in that screenshot.)
I am a lazy vanilla user operating under the principle "if you poke it you'll mess up"
I love vanilla as a flavor, but am not a fan of it most other ways...
Did anyone already post Smokey as their favourite SE part ?
19:37
@Luuklag No. Go for it.
19:54
@VLAZ Meh, I already wrote an answer there
@KylePollard Now, what is the real flag...
20:14
the collective boxes are now an absurdly bright orange color
@KevinB hwere
Oh goodness they are
That could afford to be a bit less loud.
heh, i didn't even consider dark mode
@Spevacus yup, same as with the staff button I guess
It may be due to some Stacks changes, I'll ask Aaron.
Can someone make a MSO report?
Ah, looks like they're already shipping something for the collectives thing, so don't worry about it.
Worries: Dismissed.
Thanks for looking into it. :)
Yup. :) I know shipping stuff that breaks things is hard on people but it's really great to have people who are already on top of fixes when someone notices the issue.:)
Yeah, I guess stacks is just too big to spot all things before shipping stuff
I am not envious of how hard the work is that the Stacks team does in terms of what can break - that is difficult
My typical PR: update some padding on one element on a tiny page
A Stacks PR: update colors across all network sites and also we touched every page while we were at it thanks
20:26
@KylePollard sounds my typical bugreport ;)
The first comment: lgtm
commit message: did a refactor thing
This is considered a small PR from the Stacks team. It purely does some foundational work. More than 1000 lines touched. 🤯
(okay maybe medium sized)
Here you have a PR for the stacks team @KylePollard meta.stackexchange.com/questions/367899/…
20:31
@Luuklag Might be but I'll double check, seems off
As the note in the question says, I think that Yaakov will be getting to address or assess concerns when he returns from his break.
@Catija I think it's just the comment about colors in the Stacks docs not lining up, not a comment on the staff indicator
Ah. I see. :)
Yeah, I use a variable that is quite dark on the stacks website, but turned out quite light to make that image of the staff button less screaming there. So something is in reverse for some reason. Might have to do with the implementation of the Staff label though, as on the Stacks website the elements do use the variable they are named after.
@Luuklag Oh wait - do you have dark mode on on stackoverflow.design? The colors get inverted for dark mode
20:35
@KylePollard ah you've got me!
Yeah, I think that technically, some bits of dark mode exist network-wide now, so if you're using the variables and have dark mode enabled, the colors will be inverted.
Or something. I don't know.
Perhaps that is useful info to add to the documentation then :) I'll write a MSE post :)
So you can bug Aaron with it later
I usually don't have to. He tends to monitor stuff that lives in his realm.
Aaron is all seeing and all knowing
@KylePollard If you want to take his pride, go nudge him with this: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/368241/… ;)
21:10
@Luuklag Are these commands you're @'ing SmokeDetector with or just general commentary? 😅
commands
though i don't know all of them
Rob
Rob
All the colors are brighter against the dark background, compared to the light background; I'm surprised that the brown (instead of yellow) hasn't drawn some criticism:
@KylePollard yup, f is for false, k is for ok, N is for Not an answer
@Rob ^ should be fixed soon, just building now :)
Er the orange part at least
Not sure about the dark brown color if that was related to this fix
@Rob probably due to the general inversion of color, so would be hard to make an exception for that, unless it were to be the "middle" color I think
@KylePollard I think it was always that way
21:20
We are now rockin' an orange free diet
Yeah that looks less obnoxious
And google Cloud turned white
which turns dark blue in light mode
white on that light of a blue probably comes close to violating contrast guidelines
but it's kinda the logo
Yeah it's an image, not text. So it doesn't really matter right
also because it doesn't convey any info that isn't conveyed in the text
21:29
right

A: When will the new Stack Overflow badge design come to other sites?

Anita TaylorThis new profile UI for badges has now been rolled out to all sites across the Stack Exchange network. We also fixed a pluralization bug while we were at it. Here's a few examples: Site Image Meta Stack Exchange Arqade RPG Stack Exchange

@Ollie that meme is deprecated for a reason, please leave it that way ;)
One step further to the responsive design :) Nice job @KylePollard
I really just turned on the feature and cleaned up the code, thank the CoSO team and Stacks team :)
although the resolution on your screenshot loses out on the distinct shape of the RPG badges @KylePollard, to me they just look round, and I do have a big screen to view on
It's better when I expand the screenshot though
21:38
@Luuklag Yeah the table kinda shrinks it, hey? Clicking the image and viewing the full size makes it look better
yup
You might just link the image to your profile though ;)
or just put a screenshot of puzzling in place, it has a more distinct shape
Anyways, I'm off for the night, it almost midnight. That's what you get when you're home alone
👋
Rob
Rob
22:29
@KylePollard Thanks.
Rob
Rob
22:50
Better comes in different flavors, but tiles 5 & 6 seem inconsistent with an inversion, unless it's also partially with each other. 😀
@Rob I know that vendor colors are inverted differently than the colors from the Stacks framework - I'm pretty certain that those colors are manually specified by the vendor. We have colors manually specified by each team in Stack Overflow for Teams too.
23:19
@KylePollard That aligns with my experiences. I remember that the color for one of them used to be really... uh... bright... and I recommended they pick something that wasn't so eye-catching. The response I got was that they were trying to use their branding colors, but they picked a different color, it seems. :D
